A word from Modesto Trattoria
Led by chef and owner Hector Diaz, Modesto features a farm to table approach to upscale wood-fired Italian. The menu changes twice daily and includes a variety of fresh seafood, fine meats, and house made pastas. Pizzas are hand-tossed and cooked in a wood fired oven made in Italy. To compliment your meal, our bar offers over 30 exclusively Italian wines as well as a dynamic list of classic and cutting edge cocktails. Desserts are made from scratch, including our famous tiramisu, and we proudly serve 1000 Faces Coffee.Continued

Diner Reviews
  • "Once again we were fortunate because we got the window seat, one of the few places in the restaurant where you don't feel crammed in against other patrons. The food, as always, was especially good. Our waiter was excellent, though you have to expect to spend some time. We arrived at 6:15 and did not finish dinner until 7:45."

  • "Had the grilled Octopus/vegs - fabulous. I had the crab cake/caesar salad which was yummy and my friend had the Bass/beet salad which she loved. Finished it off with pistachio lime cake with fresh whipped cream: wonderful!"

  • "I live locally and Modesto has been a favorite for a while. However, this is the first time I've been since they changed their menu, and I was disappointed both in increased prices and in fewer simple choices - everything was complex, and, for what we got, I though overpriced. I had pasta with shrimp and salmon, and it was OK, but not worth $18."

  • "Have eaten here several times and each meal was excellent. They are particularly good with fish dishes here. Service is always friendly. The only problem I have had is that the dining area is small and sometimes smoke from the kitchen can permeate the restaurant. This does not happen a lot, but did occur during one visit and was pretty overwhelming."

  • "We chose this place because our group needed variety, before the Asheville marathon/half marathon. The food was yummy, service was great! We had explained to the staff why we were running the event, raising money for a friend who had recently been diagnosed with Hodgkins Lymphoma. As we were leaving, they brought a sealed envelope and presented to us, a collection of tips from the staff to make a donation! Needless to say, we were amazed at their generosity and very touched by the gesture! Will go back..."

  • "this place was super cramped!! the food was fabu! and the service was EXCELLENT!! We did feel like our table was this size of a small cutting board!! very cramped and tiny for a restaurant! BUT, everything was pretty good!"

  • "I had to call and change our reservation twice due to my mother being in a serious car accident on her way to Asheville (she was fine, the car was demolished) and I was so thankful that Modesto was understanding about this and accommodated us with no trouble. Having spent most of my life as a restaurant hostess, I know how irritating changing a reservation multiple times can be, especially on a weekend night, and was nervous to even ask, so I appreciated the perfectly pleasant attitude towards it. Modesto has been my favorite for Italian food in Asheville for years, and they did not disappoint! Fantastic food, service, and atmosphere!"

  • "I will say the experience started off a bit rocky. We had reservations and yet had to wait at the front door for a good 5 minutes before anyone even greeted us. We were seated promptly afterwards, but again had to wait quite a while before a server came over. However, after that bit of a false start, the experience was fantastic. The service was excellent, our waiter had extensive knowledge of both the food and wine menu. The food menu is very unique. For example, there is a house salad that is charred in a lemon zest oil-and-vinegar dressing--I've never heard of charring a salad, but it was delicious. All the ingredients are fresh and locally sourced. Pasta is made in-house. Absolutely loved the meal there, I would definitely recommend it."

  • "Although Asheville is known for its great array of wonderful restaurants, I have to say that this was the most delicious spread I have had the opportunity to appreciate. The offerings chosen were cooked to perfection and were absolutely delectable. The aromas imbuing the space left one's palette in anticipation of what was soon to be personally experienced as one graces the menu of such an abundance of creative selections. The presentations of each plate...our own as well as our neighbors which could not be denied..made choosing that much more challenging. Before our selection even graced our lips, we knew that we would have to soon return to savor many other of the delights personally left unspoken for this time around. Absolutely amazed."

  • "The food here is soooooo Goood. I took the opportunity to have pork scalliopini because it was a Red Wattle heritage pig. Best pork I ever had. But rather than dwell on a particular item (because the menu changes constantly) just know that they pay attention to every detail of every plate. One thing I did notice this time was that there was a large group dining in the next room, and it made hearing difficult at times."

  • "Everything was really superb -- especially the wood-fired octopus and the eggplant parmesan. Very nice wine list and attentive server who encouraged us to sample the wines before ordering. A very good Asheville dining experience."

  • "You never know what to expect from Hector, but it's always imaginative and delicious. Not sure I like their change to a la carte menu."

  • "We have eaten at Modesto many times. This latest was a bit of a letdown as the food seemed not quite up to their high standards. Usually the food is excellent, so anything less is disappointing."

  • "When we arrived, the place was packed. Not just a full house, but overbooked. The tables were all crowded together. The wine was OK. The appetizer was AMAZING... had the grape leaves stuffed with lamb. The house made foccacia was some of the best bread I've ever had. However, I had the snapper and my boyfriend had the beef and chicken medallions, and both dishes were disappointing and lacking in flavor."

  • "The food was excellent, but we were not greeted by a waiter for 10 minutes . Not even drinks. Somewhat frustrating ."

  • "Our reservation seems to have been lost, so they squeezed the 3 of us into a small, cold table by the door where the table wasn't quite large enough for each of our plates. The main problem seemed to be that they had a larger crowd than they could smoothly keep up with, and maybe everyone arrived around the same time. So it took a long time to get drinks, get our appetizers, and get our food. The food was truly excellent though, and the staff was incredibly warm and friendly."

  • "This was our first visit and it was for Sunday brunch during restaurant week. The soup was good, but the pizza was not. There was way too much crust and very little topping. The recommended grape leaves were so so. The cioppinio was fairly good with nice seafood. The restaurant is very small. It was quiet on our visit as there were not a lot of patrons, but it could be rather loud if full to capacity. I probably would not return as I have eaten at much better restaurants close by."

  • "We selected this based on the recommendation of a friend with culinary experience. I had black eyed pea fritters and winter squash pasta carbonara- both were excellent. My friends had delicious looking sea bass, nochhio, calamari and lamb. The server was engaged, attentive and gave great recommendations on our meals. I was completely satisfied with the quality of each dish, service, and atmosphere. Highly recommended!"

  • "My husband and I had lunch during Asheville Restaurant Week because we had not been to Modesto in years. Our original experience was not good but the recent visit was good. I was hoping that they would have stepped up their game for the event but unfortunately they are still only good in a city with so many outstanding choices. Our waiter kept asking if the meal was delicious. One ask is expected, by the third time it was ridiculous and laughable. The roasted stuffed grape leaves were wonderful, the cioppino was more a pasta dish than a classic seafood stew, pizza was only fair for a town with really special artisanal pizza."
    Dined on 1/23/2014
  • "The menu is too extensive for anything to really shine, but our group much preferred its appetizers to the entrees we ordered. The entrees were very salty. If going back, I would recommend getting appetizers only."
    Dined on 1/18/2014
  • "I really enjoyed Modesto and the service was great. We started out with a caprese salad (which was devoured in under a minute) and that was phenomenal. However, when we received our actual entrees, it was like the chef through everything he/she could think of onto what should have been very simple plates. I ordered scallops over mushroom risotto and my friend order veal piccata... Very typical Italian dishes. When they came out, there were all kinds of things thrown on the plate--lemon rind, onions, asparagus, figs, capers (okay for the picatta, but not the scallop risotto), extra tomatoes, spinach, etc. It was just wayyyy too much on one plate and really took away from the food. I typically have a creative palate, but that was too much."

  • "Made a lady minute decision to fine here on a special night. Could not have chosen a better place! The staff was friendy and helpful, even offering to make my boyfriend a custom meal he'd been craving that wasn't on the menu. Turns out we didn't need it because the menu was outstanding. It was a delicious meal in an intimate environment. We'll definitely be making a repeat visit."

  • "The service was excellent, our table was ready when we arrived and the food was fresh, well prepared! We couldn't have asked for more. Two people had the lamb chops, one had the seafood with rice and I had the salmon. It was delicious. I am sure we will return to try other offerings on the menu."

  • "We were pleased with the food, service, and atmosphere. The menu and format does need some explanation but our waiter was knowledgable and informative. The pizzas are big enough for 2 if you also choose appetizers or salads. I usually consider the crust just a way to get the toppings to your mouth, but this crust had an incredible taste. You could taste the quality of the ingredients. My husband had the octopus. It is the first time I have ever been able to describe octopus as tender and tasty."

  • "I didn't get a chance to eat in this restaurant. When I made my reservation, I informed the restaurant that one of my party needed to eat gluten-free. Despite this, we were informed upon arrival that "the kitchen is very small and everything gets covered with flour." Needless to say, we left. I recognize that not every restaurant can offer gluten-free preparation. But I do think any restuarant can communicate clearly about what they do and do not provide their customers. Considerable annoyance, inconvenience, and embarrassment to my guests could have been avoided. Next time I'll hope to find a restaurant that puts the customer first."

  • "Modesto is one of Asheville's best restaurants. Very creative menu which changes twice daily. Presentation makes the food taste even better. Waiters are knowledgable about food and wine. You can't miss coming here."

  • "Although the concepts were interesting, the dishes just weren't well composed. Both my appettizer-squash blossoms-and the veal picatta had bitter tasting sauces. The veal was pretty chewy as well. My husband's enjoyed the octopus and whole branding, but the vegetables weren't very good. Would not return."

  • "The last two visits to Modesto's have been disappointing. The service, while very pleasant and desirous of pleasing, was excruciatingly SLOW! They kept telling us the kitchen was "slammed," but as far as we could see they hadn't added additional tables beyond what they were serving on our first visit 2 years ago (it was great!). The chef has hit the "too creative for your own good" point. He seems to want to get too creative! This week fennel seems to creep into everything: salami, veal picatta, and maybe the gelato (don't know, didn't try). They need to stay with the traditional Italian recipes like what Mama made."

  • "This was my third time dinning there. We were on time for our reservation . We were at the hostesses stand and let to stand there at least 3 to 4 minutes with out even as little as a hello or will be right there. The waitress Bre who was very good was just over tabled. She had tables inside as well as outside so the service was a bite slow. The appetizer were very good. For the main entrees not so good. One was even removed off our bill. Out of the six only good dinners out of six. We were not told about the use of hot peppers that several guess did not like."

  • "A restaurant that understands the wonderful flavors of Italian cooking. The meal and service was very good, although food presentation could use some work -- dishes had a sort home-cooking pile kind of presentation."

  • "I go to Modesto nearly every time I am in Asheville, as a part time resident. The food, preparation, and service are consistently very good. This restaurant is also a good value. And the diverse and innovative menu changes fairly often, providing a good deal of variety. The servers are consistently pleasant, often delightful. I should mention that when we came in last Tuesday (July 16) it was too warm inside; so, we moved outside, where it was quite pleasant."
