The restaurant was great, it was our first visit. I thought the online reservation system is very practical and easy to use. We wanted to try Modavie for the lamb and the jazz music (which were both amazing!) The only negative is the first level, which is where we were originally seated was not at all up to par with our expectation. The decor isn't up to the standard of the restaurant and you don't have access to the live music. We were really happy that the manager bumped us up to the second floor, if not we would have been really disappointed. It would be good to mention at the reservation that not all the tables have access to the live band. All in all, amazing experience, amazing food and great evening!!!

After a long day of travel to Montreal this was a perfect spot for a drink, a glass of wine and a casual dinner. A nice 10 min stroll through old Montreal from our hotel. It was entrancing. Reasonably priced. Lovely ambiance. Quiet even with a live jazz performance not far from our table by the window upstairs. Very efficient service. A very welcoming and warm environment. No complaint at all. We will return.

Purveyors failed to respond to any of the requests provided via online booking. Moreover, a visit the establishment during the afternoon prior to the evening reservation confirmed the reservation and receipt of the online request. Food and service was poor and the location we were seated in had the most obstructed view of the live band in spite of our request.

It was our second meal at Modavie and we were very happy. Great food, careful friendly service and we love the live music. We had a local beer MTL that was quite good. Mt shrimp risotto was perfect and even a chocolate lava cake for dessert - not too big, just right. My boyfriend's steak was also perfect as was my friend's lamb dish. Not cheap but if you are going out to a nice dinner you want quality.

Modavie was absolutely wonderful! My fiance has a gluten and peanut allergy and the staff were fantastic and went out of their way to make accommodations for her. Lorenzo was funny, welcoming and very generous! He brought us a delicious glass of port to end our meal. The food is fantastic. The service perfect. The music is wonderful, and it is one of the only places I have ever been that has such good live music at a reasonable volume; you can speak at a normal volume and still converse throughout the evening. I can't say enough good things about this place, there is a very good chance that if you come by, my fiance and I will be there too.

  • Bland Main Ruined the Meal

Walking in the restaurant truly feels like a jazz bar; dimly lit with a pub-like decor and a small band in the middle of the restaurant. Our starters while good were nothing to write home about. The calamari was tender and well seasoned while the rillette was solid. The meal missed the mark however when it came to the mains. The tagliatelle was extremely bland with what tasted like boiled chicken chopped up and thrown in. As for the lamb, while cooked well, it was a bit disappointing to see it seved with the neon green mint jelly that one finds in a grocery. While I can't say much about the flavour of the tiramisu as I did not try it, the presentation was sad. The chocolate fondant however was delicious; served hot with a molten center.

Maybe our expectations are too high but we were expecting a lively jazz band and excellent French cuisine on our first anniversary. But the scallop appetizer was tasty buy tiny! Only 2 small scallops, one each for $18. The trout almondine entree was poor, the fish had a fishy taste, was over cooked and bland. The braised lamb was good, very tasty, albeit salty, but a large puff pastry to lamb ratio. The old fashioned was filled with soda water, much different from the others we have tried at various other French restaurants. The jazz band was great but we were disappointed that they took an hour break during the dinner. Overall, I wouldn't go back.

After reading other reviews I expected mire from this restaurant. Our waiter was excellent and the food for our party of four was served promptly........although it did take a long time to be asked if we wanted a glass of wine. Overall the food was presented well but lacked taste. Two in our party had the trout, which was moist but had no seasoning at all. Very disappointing. Even the roasted beet salad was tasteless! The specials were more tasty and ample sized portions. If you are looking for an average restaurant with a fairly varied menu, then I can reccommend Modavie. However, it is definitely not a 4 star venue, either by atmosphere or food.

The experience with Modavie's host Lorenzo was 5 star and memorable. He was kind, accommodating, and entertaining. His service combined with the jazz performance makes the dining experience a 5 star and worth going. Our server was just lovely, but the service was slow and he was not as attentive as he could have been because it appeared he didn't have enough help. The food was good, not spectacular or unique, but a good meal.

My boyfriend and I made reservations at this restaurant after finding out about it online. We were early for our reservation but the restaurant was nice enough to accommodate our early arrival. We sat down and the waitress recommended my boyfriend a local beer to try (which was great) and I opted for a red wine. We had the calamari to start and we had the duck confit and the steak frites for main. All dishes were great. The atmosphere of the restaurant was cozy, intimate, and warm - the live jazz definitely made it more romantic. Overall, the experience and service was enjoyable and we would go back to Modavie if we had the chance to visit Montreal again!

We booked in advance from reviewing online for live music & great menu. We came from Bermuda, 25th wedding anniversary to meet with friends from Ottawa. We were greeted with best wishes by the female host but offered the only table beside kitchen & stairs. She suggested we alternately sit upstairs but it was an empty dining room & the musician was downstairs. We settled for the table by the kitchen. We had a great waiter, starters, entrees were all excellent, wine, dessert - all great. The solo singer was very enjoyable. Our 25th was not otherwise acknowledged, disappointed especially with the disregard for our reservation request for a special table. We didn't gain anything by booking advance. We would try the restaurant again sometime.

Lorenz is a courteous host and recommended the lamb as the house special. The rack was prepared as requested (rare) and when paired with a Boudreaux from the wine list, it tasted excellent! We ordered mussels in a Pernod cream sauce which were cold when served and although re-served they were still unacceptable and subsequently removed from the bill. Thank you to our waitress for taking care of us! The live music was nice, we sat upstairs as we thought it would be more conducive to conversation, etc ....... the décor creates a comfortable atmosphere for conversation and relaxation and the wait staff is more than friendly. We will be sure to come back next time we are in Montreal
