  • "We went here at the end of our trip to celebrate a birthday. Service was great. Food was inconsistent. I would try it again. Great location."

  • "Great location, full house the night we were there. Live jazz was terrific and we had a window seat to watch the vibrant street vibe. My wife and son enjoyed there meal( rack of lamb and chop ) , I had the pasta with lamb... it was dente but luke warm at best and obviously been sitting for some time. The wine list was less then impressive for an advertised wine bar. Perhaps my meal might have been a one off but I would be hesitant to revisit. Probably would give it a 3and 1/2 stars."

  • "Great Food. Great Ambiance. Great find in Old Montreal"

  • "We had a nice seat at a window upstairs overlooking the street. Atmosphere was enjoyable. Service was attentive. White bean and octopus salad was great, but the rest of the food was mediocre at best. Fish was dry and risotto and vegetables that accompanied it were barely warm. Steak frittes came in a tasty shallot sauce, but meat was not great and also overcooked. Overall, we paid way too much for the quality of the meal."

  • "Ambiance was great, musicians set the mood. Dress up or casual, welcoming atmosphere. Food was delicious!"

  • "We went for dinner at Modavie before our Cirque Soleil show. We had a great waiter and he was very knewleable and very friendly. Food was good, although not exceptional, and price was reasonable."

  • "Modavie was such a great find for us in Old Montreal, we had to come back two nights in a row! Great service and amazing live music on both nights (although we liked the gent on Tuesday night the best). Would definitely recommend, try the duck! Such a good value for duck confit."

  • "Arrived late after getting lost!!! We booked and I think that would be preferable as it was very busy. We had the table d'hote menu and we're not disappointed. Every course was mouthwatering along with a very good rose wine. If we were ever in Montreal again we would definitely go back."

  • "food is mediocre. live jazz music and vintage decoration is nice. very touristic. service is nothing spectacular."
    Dined on 7/3/2014
  • "The jazz was great. Our corner window table afforded us a wonderful view of the busy cobblestone streets outside. Our order: strip steak was just plain awful- tough, grissely; bread was warm and good; field greens salad was wonderful; pâté was stringy and tasteless. Service: hardly saw the waitress who never reported the wine; we were mostly overlooked."

  • "We had a wonderful dining experience! Great service, great food! Our waitress was very helpful explaining many of the menu items."

  • "Busy place and service was fast. Jazz was very nice. Menu lends itself to winter dining. Lamb Mille feuille was very tasty."

  • "Very great restaurant. A bit noisy upstairs next to the music band but very nice!!"
    Dined on 6/27/2014
  • "Awesome experience for a family of 5 with 3 kids 12 and under. You sat us upstairs (with option of main) in a booth by the window....all characteristics of what a family needs in dining. The portions, wine and kid-friendly approach means that we have already recommended this restaurant to others."

  • "I had to return my lamb once because it was well done when I wanted medium (who eats well done lamb shank?). The plate still returned with 2 pieces that were blue... Unacceptable."

  • "A friend and I recently dined at Modavie. We were seated right beside the window so despite it being a rainy day we were able to enjoy the view. The greeter (and I believe owner) Lorenzo was very pleasant and our waiter was great as well. We were very impressed with the service. We were given complimentary bread and butter to start off with -- the butter was REALLY good. We ordered the shrimp risotto and grilled salmon. Both items tasted really good and were also adequate portion sizes -- we were quite full by the end. The live jazz music was an added bonus. All in all, we would recommend Modavie!"

  • "Good food in a French Bistro atmosphere. Great location in Montreal's old city."

  • "Everything ordered was absolutely delicious! It would have been even nicer to have good service. But unfortunately, we had the waitress on her 1st shift (of her entire life - is our guess). And well, she definitively needs to learn a few things about how fast you need to be in order to keep up with all your tables, and knowing the menu and how items are prepared. Then again, I'm not sure why the restaurant management would give her that many tables on a Friday night. So to me, it's not entirely her fault. The Blues Band was THE BEST! Even with the waitress issue, I would still highly recommend this restaurant for the quality of the food. I will go back myself to try other things on their menu and just avoid that waitress at all cost..."

  • "When I walked in, I was in a great mood and was happy to get to the restaurant and try it for the first time. The host did not even greet me, did not smile, had a bit of an attitude and was not welcoming at all."

  • "There are many better places to get a better meal in Montreal. Server seemed overwhelmed and under knowledgable of the menu. The rack of lamb was the best of the 4 meals although overcooked even though ordered medium rare. The chicken was very overcooked and bone dry. The duck confit was tolerable but I had a much better rendition the week prior in Mexico City. The spaghetti & meat sauce was good but nothing worth returning for the next time I go to Montreal. My advice is there are MUCH better places within a few blocks of this place for even less money."

  • "The food was terrific, especially the lamb. However, the ambience is so loud, couldn't hear the jazz very well. Not a romantic place at all. Service was okay."

  • "My new wife and I did Montreal and Quebec City for our honeymoon. We knew we wanted to do 1 upscale dinner when we were in Montreal, so I made reservations at L'Express. However, upon arriving in the city we quickly realized how difficult it can be to get around, and we decided to cancel L'express in favor of something closer to the hotel. What a great decision! I'm sure L'express is good, but Modavie was a couple minutes away from our hotel, and the experience was amazing. The food, the MUSIC (Sam Orsini), and the service all top notch. We cleaned our plates of Shrimp Risotto, Strip steak, and lava cake. It had been a dreary, rainy day but we had such a great time we each left dinner in a fantastic mood. Go on a Tuesday to see Sam!"

  • "Lorenzo was most accommodating for our 29 anniversary celebration. We had a seat by the window, a wonderful waitress, great drinks and lamb. I would highly recommend. There are actually three other seating areas, upstairs, outside and at the bar."

  • "This restaurant had a nice review. I was disappointed with food quality. It was just okay. The staff was friendly and there was live music which was nice. But the downside is noise quality was poor. I unfortunately don't believe I would return. Too many great restaurants in Montreal."

  • "I went to this restaurant with a small group of friends, who had mixed feelings about the food. The service was more than adequate, our server was very helpful and polite but the food was more of a hit or miss. I ordered pastas, which were delicious and the plate was copious, but my friend ordered a steak, which was very bland. Another friend ordered the truite and she liked it, but what was supposed to be risotto to go with the fish was nothing more than rice. All in all, this is a nice restaurant but we had the feeling we paid more for the ambiance and location than the food."

  • "I have been eating here for years and although not an every week stop, I am always well received, served and fed. This is my favourite Old Port restaurant."

  • "Nice place, although it would be good to know early on that you cannot just drink at a table your need to order some food."

  • "Arrived for my reservation and restaurant had overbooked their first floor dining area where they had jazz music as their entertainment and why we made this reservation. Hostess and then owner stated that we could go upstairs for dinner without jazz entertainment but they had to hold their open tables for guess who had reservations. What is an open table reservation? Why does restaurant advertise jazz entertainment on Open Table if they are NOT going to offer it. Very disappointing and unprofessional. We went somewhere else and had a delightful dining experience in Old Montreal."

  • "the quality is high but the portions leave you fairly hungry. for a great quality, the quantity is just not satisfying enough. service was poor due to the need for repeated requests that took way too long. you have to make an effort to flag them down. i would concider inviting someone to impress but then i would change my mind knowing there are better spots for same quality of food but with better portions and a more reliable service. as far as the price range goes, do expect a 100$ tab for a couple's dinner. obviously money isn't an issue for their target clients, however, it would be embarassing taking someone for dinner there only to leave them unsatisfied. would be "romantic" and/or "special occasion" but it's not worth it."

  • "When we walked in and the band was playing George Thorogood's One Bourbon, One Scotch, One Beer. My husband is a big fan. Despite that number the band was not a rock band and was not loud and played a nice blend of jazzy music. Our table was next to the window. Scallop appetizer (very pricey at $14 for just two scallops but it was our anniversary) seasoned and cooked just right with a sauce that complemented it. Hubby had a caeser salad. Crisp lettuce, good dressing. Trout almandine was flavorful and cooked just right but my husband's pasta with chicken and vegetables was just OK. But if you want pasta everyone knows you should go to an Italian restaurant. We plan on returning soon."

  • "one of the best restaurants i have ever been to! all of the food i had was amazing, the service was unreal- our waitress was extremely knowledgable, helpful, prompt, NICE and courteous. the owner was also extremely nice and made the effort to introduce himself which was a nice gesture, and one of the main reasons i am taking the time to write this. I'm from London ON and no restaurant even compares."

  • "The location is great with pleasant decor. The food was good, the service excellent. My only issue was that for an evening dinner the tables upstairs were so close together we were practically sitting with the people next to us - challenging for a private conversation while out for dinner on a Saturday night."

  • "We were in town for the Grand Prix & had had 3 previous nights of great dining in Montreal. We chose this restaurant near of hotel from reading reviews. Service was slow. Took 1.5 hours to get fairly easy main courses to the table. Restaurant wasn't that busy. Food was not great. Our friends steak was blue & she barely ate it. Six of us left very disappointed. Music was a saving grace. Will not visit again"

  • "What a beautiful setting for our 1 year anniversary! The ambiance was lovely and the view into Old Montreal was exciting. The wait staff was very friendly but a little overwhelmed due to the Grand Prix weekend. The food was delicious. We met a very nice couple who coordinated a "congratulations dessert" to arrive after they had left. What a wonderful surprise! We will definitely visit again."

  • "Have been coming here once a year for years. I like their rack of lamb, its delicious. My husband had the filet mignon which he thought was ok. We ordered the tarte tatin which is usually great but the apple was almost raw."

  • "We went to celebrate my 50th birthday and everything was very great. Food was how it should be - hit and tasty. My mother-in-law said it was the best muscles she ever had. Our duck confit was perfect too. Highly recommend it for the value you get. "
