Diner Reviews
  • "Requested upstairs seating to hear music. Hard surfaces made peoples voices so loud it would have been distracting without the music."

  • "Read great reviews about this place, food, Jazz & the manager. Totally overrated with nearly inedible food & slow & inattentive service. Good location to stroll around afterward but that is it. Too may other great places to eat in Old Town"

  • "I was there for a special occasion during the week. I saw there are many jazz show and I love jazz. The food was nice, wonderful lamb, but we were really close to the other table. It was noisy, difficult to hear the music. But wine is good too, notable wine list. So a mix of a good and bad points."

  • "We had a great meal on 14/07/2014 and went back for lunch on the 16/07/2014! I would prefer to see draft beer on tap as $8.00 for a bottle of Kronenbourg is a little expensive, the food was really good and the lunch menu was great value."

  • "Good food and location. Disappointed that we expected advertised live jazz music but was all blues. Friendly service. Tables for 4 and larger groups are around the perimeter with views from upstairs windows. Unfortunately the tables for couples are all in the middle so the waitstaff constantly apologized for bumping into us and our chairs and table throughout the evening."

  • "Modavie (style of life) was sufficient in almost all aspects of dinning out but no more. (the service was excellent) There was loud music playing upstairs that was played through a mediocre sounding speaker down stairs where we were. We were plummeted into the centre of the restaurant when we arrived. Surrounded by other crowded dinners. A bit too close for a fine dinning experience. I had the Milles feuilles à l'agneau.(it kind of looked like pulled pork on a bun) Although the presentation was ok the lamb it's self was chewy and not as tasty as I would have thought for a braised lamb. The vegetables were overdone and mushy. One of my dinning partners had the chicken fettuccini that he said was quite ordinaire. Would not return."

  • "Second time visit here. The food is always fresh tasting and outstanding in my opinion. The band was playing all of the evening wich was very enjoyablke. Amazing table service too :)"

  • "Great food, awesome wine and cocktails, and tremendous tiramisu and coffee. Will definitely come here again! Highly recommend this one! Five stars."

  • "Ten years ago we discovered this gem in Old Montreal for a late night dinner. This time, with friends, we were welcomed so warmly by Lorenzo, that you probably felt remembered you had been there before. Dinner was superb, service was excellent and not obtrusive, the music from the second floor was enjoyable but did not din our conversation. We dined on Mushroom Risotto, Rack of Lamb and Duck Confit. The beet salad was superb and the calamari was fresh and was the best I have had in years. Thank you Lorenzo for a wonderful evening...we will return, and hopefully will not be 10 years again!"

  • "I booked this based on Trip Advisor's reviews and loved how easy it was to use open table. Directionswere impeccable- easy parking right behind the restaurant $20 busy Friday night - our companions found free parking the street -our table was waiting for us on time - Service was terrific, meals arrived in a timely and appetizing fashion. Disappointed with the French onion soup - bland and pale- that MUST be fixed but the food was great other than that. The live band (which we didn't expect) was FABULOUS had we not had tickets for a show afterwards we would have gladly stayed longer and ordered another round of drinks and dessert! Great value for the price and fairly good wine list. Dessert list was limited but included some nice choices"

  • "My wife and I made a reservation for 7pm on a Thursday night in July. We got our table right away though it had no view of the band. The tables were packed very tightly together so there was no privacy and barely any elbow room. There seemed to be one waiter working the entire room. It took us 25 minutes from the time we sat down until we had our first drinks. We had to constantly try to get our waiter's attention to get any service. We ordered our food, which was fine if not spectacular. I had high hopes for the band, a jazz & bass combo, but I found the music uninspired. We paid & left as soon as possible. For really good music I recommend the Upstairs Jazz Club downtown instead -- service was more understaffed but the music was great."

  • "First, the food is delicious. The location in the old town is convenient. Windows open to the street in good weather. There was music, a soloist singing 70s pop the night I was there. There were tourists, families, and couple young and old.service was friendly and attentive. A great choice."

  • "We went here at the end of our trip to celebrate a birthday. Service was great. Food was inconsistent. I would try it again. Great location."

  • "Great location, full house the night we were there. Live jazz was terrific and we had a window seat to watch the vibrant street vibe. My wife and son enjoyed there meal( rack of lamb and chop ) , I had the pasta with lamb... it was dente but luke warm at best and obviously been sitting for some time. The wine list was less then impressive for an advertised wine bar. Perhaps my meal might have been a one off but I would be hesitant to revisit. Probably would give it a 3and 1/2 stars."

  • "We had a nice seat at a window upstairs overlooking the street. Atmosphere was enjoyable. Service was attentive. White bean and octopus salad was great, but the rest of the food was mediocre at best. Fish was dry and risotto and vegetables that accompanied it were barely warm. Steak frittes came in a tasty shallot sauce, but meat was not great and also overcooked. Overall, we paid way too much for the quality of the meal."

  • "Modavie was such a great find for us in Old Montreal, we had to come back two nights in a row! Great service and amazing live music on both nights (although we liked the gent on Tuesday night the best). Would definitely recommend, try the duck! Such a good value for duck confit."

  • "Arrived late after getting lost!!! We booked and I think that would be preferable as it was very busy. We had the table d'hote menu and we're not disappointed. Every course was mouthwatering along with a very good rose wine. If we were ever in Montreal again we would definitely go back."

  • "The jazz was great. Our corner window table afforded us a wonderful view of the busy cobblestone streets outside. Our order: strip steak was just plain awful- tough, grissely; bread was warm and good; field greens salad was wonderful; pâté was stringy and tasteless. Service: hardly saw the waitress who never reported the wine; we were mostly overlooked."

  • "Awesome experience for a family of 5 with 3 kids 12 and under. You sat us upstairs (with option of main) in a booth by the window....all characteristics of what a family needs in dining. The portions, wine and kid-friendly approach means that we have already recommended this restaurant to others."

  • "I had to return my lamb once because it was well done when I wanted medium (who eats well done lamb shank?). The plate still returned with 2 pieces that were blue... Unacceptable."

  • "Very great restaurant. A bit noisy upstairs next to the music band but very nice!!"

  • "Everything ordered was absolutely delicious! It would have been even nicer to have good service. But unfortunately, we had the waitress on her 1st shift (of her entire life - is our guess). And well, she definitively needs to learn a few things about how fast you need to be in order to keep up with all your tables, and knowing the menu and how items are prepared. Then again, I'm not sure why the restaurant management would give her that many tables on a Friday night. So to me, it's not entirely her fault. The Blues Band was THE BEST! Even with the waitress issue, I would still highly recommend this restaurant for the quality of the food. I will go back myself to try other things on their menu and just avoid that waitress at all cost..."

  • "When I walked in, I was in a great mood and was happy to get to the restaurant and try it for the first time. The host did not even greet me, did not smile, had a bit of an attitude and was not welcoming at all."

  • "Good food in a French Bistro atmosphere. Great location in Montreal's old city."

  • "A friend and I recently dined at Modavie. We were seated right beside the window so despite it being a rainy day we were able to enjoy the view. The greeter (and I believe owner) Lorenzo was very pleasant and our waiter was great as well. We were very impressed with the service. We were given complimentary bread and butter to start off with -- the butter was REALLY good. We ordered the shrimp risotto and grilled salmon. Both items tasted really good and were also adequate portion sizes -- we were quite full by the end. The live jazz music was an added bonus. All in all, we would recommend Modavie!"

  • "My new wife and I did Montreal and Quebec City for our honeymoon. We knew we wanted to do 1 upscale dinner when we were in Montreal, so I made reservations at L'Express. However, upon arriving in the city we quickly realized how difficult it can be to get around, and we decided to cancel L'express in favor of something closer to the hotel. What a great decision! I'm sure L'express is good, but Modavie was a couple minutes away from our hotel, and the experience was amazing. The food, the MUSIC (Sam Orsini), and the service all top notch. We cleaned our plates of Shrimp Risotto, Strip steak, and lava cake. It had been a dreary, rainy day but we had such a great time we each left dinner in a fantastic mood. Go on a Tuesday to see Sam!"

  • "There are many better places to get a better meal in Montreal. Server seemed overwhelmed and under knowledgable of the menu. The rack of lamb was the best of the 4 meals although overcooked even though ordered medium rare. The chicken was very overcooked and bone dry. The duck confit was tolerable but I had a much better rendition the week prior in Mexico City. The spaghetti & meat sauce was good but nothing worth returning for the next time I go to Montreal. My advice is there are MUCH better places within a few blocks of this place for even less money."

  • "The food was terrific, especially the lamb. However, the ambience is so loud, couldn't hear the jazz very well. Not a romantic place at all. Service was okay."

  • "Lorenzo was most accommodating for our 29 anniversary celebration. We had a seat by the window, a wonderful waitress, great drinks and lamb. I would highly recommend. There are actually three other seating areas, upstairs, outside and at the bar."

  • "This restaurant had a nice review. I was disappointed with food quality. It was just okay. The staff was friendly and there was live music which was nice. But the downside is noise quality was poor. I unfortunately don't believe I would return. Too many great restaurants in Montreal."

  • "I have been eating here for years and although not an every week stop, I am always well received, served and fed. This is my favourite Old Port restaurant."

  • "Nice place, although it would be good to know early on that you cannot just drink at a table your need to order some food."

  • "Arrived for my reservation and restaurant had overbooked their first floor dining area where they had jazz music as their entertainment and why we made this reservation. Hostess and then owner stated that we could go upstairs for dinner without jazz entertainment but they had to hold their open tables for guess who had reservations. What is an open table reservation? Why does restaurant advertise jazz entertainment on Open Table if they are NOT going to offer it. Very disappointing and unprofessional. We went somewhere else and had a delightful dining experience in Old Montreal."
