  • "Not sure why it was rated so high. I found it to be at best average for this price/class restaurant."

  • "Nothing to boast about, there are better choices in the area"

  • "A terrific live music bar and restaurant, warm and tasteful, well-organized and friendly ambiance. Not over-the-top music, just pleasantly energetic and great entertainers. Menu was great, well done, and servers were on-point at all times. Not a dark and spooky "player" environment, but rather, a warm, full of character older structure with a great manager and attentive staff. Two levels to enjoy, one with live band the other on the ground floor where the music could be heard but a bit away from the activity. Windows to see the old city of Montreal, and easy payment with digital credit card readers. Would be hard-pressed to not be there every month if I lived in Montreal."

  • "We were on a special couple's visit to Montreal and based on some TripAdvisor reviews decided to try Modavie. What a great decision. The food was really good, we both had pasta dishes. The small, stylish place was fun. The live jazz which is hard to find especially on a Sunday night was quite good. Make your reservations and go."

  • "Excellent service, food was not original at all but was tasty."

  • "Easy to find and easy to enjoy, Modavie is populated by hosts who care about your dining experience. From near constant water glass refills to a wide selection of desserts, everything works at this restaurant. Conversations get a bit more challenging, once the live jazz starts up after 7 pm. I had the duck confit which was moist (not dry). Lorenzo dropped in on us twice and remembered my wife and daughter from an earlier visit. Well worth the trip."

  • "Loved this place! We dined upstairs where the small jazz band played. We never were rushed ( we were there for over 3 hours), the service was very prompt and friendly. We were sitting next to the stage but we're able to hold a conversation"

  • "This is not the first time I've dined here so I have some perspective. Love the place for its Old Montreal look and the service was very friendly. The food is good it just doesn't have a wow factor. I like the live music but it was very limited the night we were there. Great location for tourists."

  • "This live Jazz spot is a complete experience of old Montreal; great food, ambiance with excellent live jazz. We had the calamari to start, lentil soup and a wonderful goat cheese salad as first courses with lamb chops, halibut and veal ravioli as our mains, all cooked to flavorful perfection. We finished it off with tiramisu and their twist on home made apple pie. Sumptuous! Our waitress was very friendly, informative and interactive which completed the experience of a great evening out. Her suggestions for food were bang on and delivered with a smile and genuine caring of how we liked it. We paid $158 for the three of us, including beer and wine. Great value, great experience, topped off our trip. Well done!"

  • "Our evening at Modavie was the highlight of our trip to Old Montreal. Our waiter & Lorenzo made us feel welcome and looked after throughout the entire evening. Our children (14 & 10) loved the food and ambience....hip and energetic. Next time we'll go up to the second floor to listen to the music!"

  • "great atmosphere and location. live jazz music adds to the ambiance. if you want a table where you can see the musicians you will need to request in advance. have been several times - classic bistro enviro."

  • "We had our celebratory dinner here after getting engaged nearby. We booked online and arrived for our reservation 2 minutes early. The staff greeted us well and showed us to our table upstairs near the live jazz band. The music was wonderful and made the night very romantic for us. We ordered glass of red wine, calamari, and two rack of lambs. Lambs were amazing. They melted in our mouths like chocolate. When asked about what wine would pair well with the lambs the staff were not too knowledgeable. Everything was great. We had dinner at 9:45pm so the live jazz band was wrapping up around 10:30 or 10:45pm. Would have been great if they stayed longer. Our bill came up to $140 with tips and tax. A little pricey but we had the best lamb there."

  • "Absolutely loved it and can't think of anything negative to say. The food and atmosphere exceeded expectations and the live jazz put it over the top!"

  • "We had an exceptional dinner at Modavie during a brief stay in Old Montreal. The service, food, and entertainment were all top-notch. Loved the live folk music on Tuesday night."

  • "I ordered braised lamb, which was moderately warm, placed between pastry, and not especially plentiful. My wife ordered Caesar salad in which the lettuce was almost uniformly white, perhaps a few off-color spots. Her onion soup was very good. We came because of the live music, and were happy with that. Nothing out of the ordinary, just a very good blues band. The hostess and wait staff were very kind about seating us where and when we were comfortable. Those in charge of the staff seemed overly busy and preoccupied, ignoring the usual quick smile or greeting; one of the senior staff interrupted with some info for the hostess as she was talking to me, apparently thinking shed be less intrusive if she skipped the "Excuse me.""

  • "What a fantastic restaurant. Lorenzo the manager greeted us enthusiastically and checked in on us regularly. The waiter was great. Everyone treated us like we were their top priority (but of course they were doing that to everyone). I was a little concerned that it would be too noisy for my parents with the live jazz upstairs, but it wasn't a problem at all. Half of us had an excellent pulled lamb pasta dish and the other had the best lamb chops I've ever tasted. So glad we found this Old Montreal gem!"

  • "Very positive starting with the on-line reservation process that was easy and where after asking for a special greeting to celebrate a special occasion, everything happened as per my request and more!"
    Dined on 3/8/2014
  • "I made a reservation but didn't specify that I wanted to see the jazz show - I thought it would have been obvious but didn't realize that the restaurant had two floors and jazz was on the top floor. Fortunately we were accommodated but the host wasn't eager to sit us upstairs despite discovering that there was plenty of room. The service upstairs made up for the confusion downstairs and we had a lovely evening."

  • "The host, tall, grey hair man was just barely friendly. The bartender was reAlly nice- took good care of us. The server upstairs did well, considering it was loud and she was super busy. The food- apps were Great, lamb was dry and duck was sweet. The music- advertised for live jazz and it was r&b blues. She was a great singer tho. We probably won't go back but all in all it was just mediocre."

  • "It is always a joy to visit Modavie when in Montreal. Lorenzo always treats us right, food is always terrific, service is top notch, and music was great. I had the rack of lamb, prepared just the way I like, my wife had the Salmon, cooked to perfection. We really enjoyed listening to the Friday night blues, played several very good sets. Can't wait for our next visit."

  • "Fowl was extremely dry and the fish was average. Convenient location. Lorenzo the manager or maybe the owner was very friendly and took care of us after I mentioned about the quality of the food. He was apologetic and His service was top notch."

  • "The night began with a greeting at the front door from owner Lorenzo. A charming man who treated us like VIP's. We ordered a bottle of wine sat back and enjoyed the ambiance. We heard their specialty was lamb and we couldn't resist and both ordered the Rack of Lamb. We were not disappointed. The presentation was picture perfect and the lamb melted in our mouths. Throughout the meal Lorenzo dropped by to see if we were enjoying ourselves, he was quite entertaining. Overall we could not have had a better dining experience. Well done Modavie!"

  • "The night we went it was very busy. The tables are a little tightly crammed together. The food and service was great, would go again. We went there for the jazz but found the music upstairs was so loud we could not have conversation. Our group sat downstairs to be able to talk to each other."

  • "Superior food ambience and music in the heart of Old Montreal. Try the lamb. Or for that matter anything else on the menu."
    Dined on 2/16/2014
  • "Duck was great; french onion soup okay. Really went here for the Jazz and didn't get an upstairs table, so that was a disappointment. There isn't a bar (just more reserved tables) upstairs where the music is, so there isn't a way to enjoy it if you are not seated there. Moral of the story: ask for a table upstairs when you reserve if you are interested in the music. Nice atmosphere though....and good location in Old Montreal."

  • "I took my wife to this restaurant, for both her birthday and valentine. Even if it is was a Saturday night, we were never rushed niether were we overcrowded. Music and overall ambiance was really nice, food was excellent. Our waiter quickly adapted to our style, and the manager makes you feel very welcomed. It was a night we will always remember, and I will definitely go back soon."

  • "1st time we went was to discover the place as my brother recommended me. The 2nd time was for last year Valentine's Day with teir Valentine's table d'hôte menu. The last time was for this year Valentine's Day too for the live jazz band the have on the 2nd floor, the menu and the not-too-much-growding-for -Valentine that we've remembered from last year. The manager, Lorenzo, his always super welcoming, family member like!"

  • "Great location - in the heart of old Montreal. Ambiance was very romantic, private. Live Jazz music was a unique feature. Food was fantastic and reasonably priced - seafood pesto tagliatelle had very large shrimp and scallops that were cooked perfectly and a great value for the money. They also offer a price-fix option that includes an appetizer, main, and dessert for $29.00 although your choices were quite limited, so we elected to order a la carte. Very satisfied with the overall experience. Will recommend to family and friends."

  • "I made a reservation for the restaurant as I am a Jazz fan, and had heard they had Jazz live show while dinner .When I arrived my surprised was that I had made a reservation and the show was on the top floor, not where my table was. So very disappointing as the food was nice, nothing special for the price. The service was very slow, from the start and delay between plates. Long time to get the bill too.The atmosphere is good and restaurant looks nice but hasn't got a highlight other than the jazz."

  • "I went there last friday and had a selection from the Happening Gourmand menu. I ordered the more expensive rack of lamb with goat cheese, Dijon mustard and sesame. I must say i was really disappointed, the food looked and tasted better on the menu than what i received on my plate. Maybe it is because i went there towards the last days of the event, however I dont expect I will be returning there."
