At the Mockingbird Kitchen and Bar (fka Tollgate Tavern), our goal is to bring you approachable New American cuisine using fresh, vibrant seasonal and local ingredients. Locally sourced and globally flavored we strive to present well-balanced dishes with flavors ranging from subtle to bold.
The tavern is a casually elegant restaurant located in a beautiful, 270-year old historic home; the Captain Bull Tavern listed on the National Historic Register, on the 10-acre Toll Gate Hill Inn in the northwest corner of Connecticut, just 45 minutes from Hartford and 2.5 hour’s drive from Boston and New York.

  • "With an Easter Sunday noon reservation, we had hoped for some Brunch options, but they were not offered. The kitchen did their best to accommodate us off-menu, and the food was terrific. The service staff was adequate, friendly, and well-meaning, but a bit confused about what specials and seafood were offered or available, and had to return with corrections for us and another table. Directions were good, seating and ambience quite historic and romantic, and it was a pleasant overall experience."

  • "I was impressed having dined everywhere in the County now. the dining itself is indeed comparable to an up-scale European dining experience surrounded by the greenery of the Litchfield hills. This, is in fact exceptional from the quality of the food on the table to the cozy atmosphere and the competent service making the whole culinary trip at the M-bird a must dine out and not just on special occasions. All this is even more surprising if compared with the mediocre and ordinary debut of virtually everything else in the decaying ghost town of Torrington-CT. The little M-bird stands out like a true towering giant in this context which could easy score on a European Michelin guide an exceptional 4 stars! Bravo! Bravo! Encore!"

  • "This place is moving down the road, and we wish it the best, but the current location is very charming. An antique Inn with fireplaces in every room, it seems pretty rickety, but is very charming. We've been to Mockingbird several time, but it's gets better every time. This time, it was flawless. The specials all sounded delish, but those we selected were very special. Beautiful presentations, top notch attentive service, big flavor, interesting textures, interesting combinations...they took the kind of care that is hard to find. Along with Arethusa's Tavolo and West Street Grill, Mockingbird has risen to the top of the dining scene in Litchfield County."

  • "The parking lot and driveway were treacherous- coated with ice. Once we reached the door, it was a wonderful time. Our table was waiting. The small dining room was a bit noisy but not unreasonable. I loved that we were next to the fireplace (real wood, not gas) on a cold evening. The five entrée menu was supplemented with four specials. The salads and entrees we chose were delicious. We had to wait a while before the entrees were served. Afterwards we had dessert and coffee, which was left off the check. When I brought this to the waitress' attention, she replied that was to make up for the delay waiting for the entrees. That was very nice considering we had not complained at all. Overall very enjoyable evening."

  • "I've been eating here since it opened and sadly watched the traditional trend of many restaurants, that when they become established the prices rise and the portions shrink, but the last dinner I had did it for me. I ordered an entrée and got an appetizer and dessert. There was a lot of sugar on this dish (yummy, but still dessert) and the meat was not more than 3 ounces - probably 2. It woke up my appetite and left me feeling that I had to go out for another meal. I don't think I'll be back. Too bad."

  • "We have lost track of how many times we have come to MKB . All have been great and this last time was another really great time. We had Toms brother and wife for our birthdays. Very cold and wintery day outside and warm and inviting inside. We sat by the fire and ate ourselves silly! Food was fantastic, wine delightful and dessert topped if off... thanks again!"

  • "We were looking for a romantic dining experience. The folks at Mockingbird really delivered. The food was artfully crafted and delicious. The falafel are creamy and delicious. My partner had an Asian inspired noodle dish. It was easily the most interesting food either of us has had out in quite a while. The ambience was cozy. A roaring fireplace and friendly staff greet you when you enter. The lighting is dim in a good way. The setup is small and personal, great in my opinion for couples and small groups. Service was imperfect but excellent. You could tell they really cared. Five stars overall. Wish there were more places like this out there. We will be back."

  • "We LOVED the Mockingbird, but it was difficult. We went on Christmas Eve, and I think the regular wait staff must have been off that night. Our waitress was not the least bit friendly or welcoming, and she argued with my daughter about whether her drink had been mixed correctly (it hadn't been). But...the food was truly GREAT, and a second waitress who helped ours was very nice, as was the young man who helped serve and clear. This is a classic old-school Connecticut country place: dark-wood, blazing fireplaces, creaky wood floors, soft lighting. Despite the waitress, we all agreed we'd LOVE to go back. We think the bad service was an unfortunate but random occurrence, and we would recommend this restaurant HIGHLY."

  • "Still our favorite in the area. I am sorry they took some of the simpler things, like burgers off the menu but there food is simply wonderful. I will never miss a chance to have the duck breast and the berkshire pork chop is unbeatable. The chicken dishes, both the roast breast and the confit thigh are winners. The biggest problem here is deciding what to have. Service is knowledgeable, friendly and not overbearing or pretentious. The desserts are outstanding as well. This is not one of those restaurants with great starters and finishes but mediocre mains - everything from the salads and chinese dumplings to the mains, and the finales such as chocolate shortcake and carrot cake are winners."

  • "The Mockingbird's proprietor, Samantha Tilley has a great feel for both casual and more formal dishes. You will find many fascinating comfort food favorites, as well as flavor combinations you don't see everyday. The bar always has interesting drinks on special, and they have a very credible wine list. When the restaurant moves into their own private digs in Bantam in 2014, it will only get better."

  • "Everything about Mockingbird Kitchen is perfect. Great standard entrees with unique specials every time we visit. This time, we started with a beet salad and an appetizer-size turkey potpie, both wonderful. My wife had the salmon, which she’s had before here, and can’t help having it again. I had a rack of venison, which was superb. Our desserts were a pleasant surprise, and we’re glad we got our own and didn’t share. The service is attendant, yet not clingy, and wonderfully friendly. Perfect."

  • "Sam and her staff hit the nail on the head….everytime! The food is amazing, the staff are professional but extremely kind and warm. The place is charming with three fireplaces roaring all winter. My only wish is that I would have found this place earlier. The care that is given to shining the glassware and flatware was impressive. My boyfriend and I dropped by one Sunday afternoon only to find that we were an hour early for their 5ish pm opening. Sam welcomed us in….she lowered the lights at the bar, poured us a glass of wine, made sure the music was on and then proceeded to be charming while she polished glasses and managed the restaurant. Can't wait to visit them at their upcoming new digs at Bantam Inn. Love this place!!! You will too!!!"

  • "We have never been served anything other than an outstandingly excellent meal at the Mockingbird. Chef Sam Tilley works magic with locally sourced meats and vegetables. On our last visit, we enjoyed Berkshire pork chops served with delicious delicate turnips. A curry cauliflower soup to start was fabulous. Desserts are rich combinations of many flavors. We plan to follow Sam when she moves in January (2014) to her own building in nearby Bantam which is rapidly becoming the foodie hot spot of NW Connecticut. And yes, she will have a fireplace and blazing fire at the new place also. just like at the current building."

  • "I've gone to Mockingbird quite a few times. The food is very imaginative but the prices are much too high. With tip for two, the bill was $183. That's very expensive for Litchfield. We each had two drinks, appetizer, entree and dessert plus coffee/tea. There are other less expensive restaurants that give you as good value. Not sure how the new restaurant in Bantam will fare especially with the Arathuesa venue right next door."

  • "We've eaten here many times. The restaurant is set in a lovely old inn, although it's soon moving to a larger venue. The food is consistently outstanding, the service excellent. I particularly like that I can bring my own wine for only a $10 corkage fee. The crispy kale salad is excellent, and well often have a salad and a couple of appetiZes as dinner. Considering the quality of the food, the prices are reasonable for the area."

  • "This was our second visit to Mockingbird. Our first experience was a wounderful surprise, one of the best dinners we have ever experienced. The staff was very freindly, they perfectly balanced friendly and attentive service with respect for our private conversation. We decided to return for my wife's birthday and we were equally impressed with the chef's creations. Fresh ingredients and a real talent to combine ingredients into innovative twists on common dishes like chicken and halibut make this restaurant really special."
