A word from Mockingbird Bistro
Mockingbird Bistro Wine Bar combines Sheely’s Texas roots with a style of cooking that he knows well, that of the Riviera, specifically the French Riviera. At Mockingbird, the feel of the menu is "country-French-meets-American-market." Sheely updates the menu seasonally to take advantage of the ingredients available at-market, as well as to give him the freedom to exercise his creativity.Continued

Diner Reviews
  • "Pleasant staff, but food is while tasty and presented nicely awfully overpriced"

  • "The food was good and not too loud. The wine selection was extensive. The beet salad was great and the mussel appetizer had just the right amount of spice. Only a few food woes- although the scallops were cooked well, great crust and good texture, they were paired with a celeriac and apple puree (tasty). The textures were too similar and mushy in your mouth. The special NY strip was a little tough, however the mushroom risotto was delicious. These were just a few minor things. Overall, the food/wine, service, and ambiance of this restaurant was wonderful."

  • "Having only been here once and it during restaurant week with a prix fixe menu, we wanted to give it a try on a quiet night. In a sea of $25 plate places in Houston, it's hard to give MBB 5 stars when they have similar items but for $10 more. Everything was on par for the entrees at any number of places like Eleven XI, La Vista, or Provisions. Just for, well, an older audience. I love the location and decor. Well executed and plated. If it was $25 a plate like everywhere else, I'd add it to the rotation."

  • "Sometimes, my wife and I have to make an excuse to go back. It is a special occasion place. However, it is hands down the best experience in town. The service, menu, and quality are exceptional."

  • "We found this place online as we were looking for a place to have our anniversary dinner. What a find! Drinks were well made and actually interesting. The food was memorable and everything was delicious. Any restaurant where you can get hot and cold foie has to be good. You have to eat here!"

  • "Mockingbird Bistro is one of our favorite restaurants in town. Not only is the food excellent, but the wine list and the service are equally as good. We like a quiet spot where conversation is possible without screaming. The ambience is elegant and any experience at Mockingbird Bistro leaves you feeling fulfilled."

  • " This is the perfect place to take a client. Impeccable service. Delicious food. We will definitely return."

  • "This was a great place! Great service, great atmosphere, very romantic. Ate here with another couple, and we all were treated very well. Very beautiful interior. The staff took great care in setting the mood. Excellent service, and a foodie's paradise. Would definitely recommend for an intimate date night."

  • "Second time we have been here. First time was amazing, but this time the service was slow. Restaurant was about 3/4 full on Friday night at 8. Our waiter was good, but I was just not wowed. We were there to celebrate my wife's birthday. I will be back, but hope for more attention to the details."

  • "We enjoyed a romantic dinner for two here on June 21st. The food and service here were great but I know it was pricey when they had a $32 hamburger on the menu. I've dined all over the country and haven't even seen a burger on the menu this expensive in New York city! The wine list was limited and very pricey."

  • "We really enjoyed our experience here -- fantastic menu selection with daily specials, great service and really attentive to serving you great food."

  • "Relaxed elegance best describes Mockingbird Bistro. With so many restaurant choices in Houston when I find myself craving a Mockingbird fix, when it hits, it can't be fullfilled quickly enough. This like neighborhood gem is a wonderful lunch meeting spot but also offers an expanded menu in the evenings with entrees that are hard to choose from. On my recent visit, I saw the duck and was sold but then I saw the lamb and my mouth watered but in the end, I went with the kobe beef burger.....it's to die for !! Never a regret even ordering it for dinner. Try Mockingbird and you too will be coming back."

  • "I took my husband here for his birthday. We had a very enjoyable meal. We enjoyed everything from start to finish. I feel like the price was a tad high compared to the ambiance. Everything was great but typically at the restaurants I've been to the with a price like that its a higher end feel with swanky decor and every one in a sports coat, etc. However, the service, food and everything was amazing. It was a very nice evening. Everything from the bread to the dessert and everything in-between was wonderful!"

  • "Never a miss at the'Bird. Food, wine, service, all superb."

  • "All in our party of six were familiar with Mockingbird and have had good experiences in the past. No exception this time, as we had a variety of entrees and appetizers - from fish to duck to steak, as well as mussels and several salads - and all were delicious reasonably-sized portions and nicely presented. The service team was friendly and attentive without be obtrusive. The one thing that was different was that we were seated in a dining room behind the bar (wine cellar?). Sorry we didn't know about it before, because the main dining room and the balcony can be so noisy that it's hard to carry on a decent conversation. So, in addition to a nice evening we learned something that should make future visits even better."

  • "Consistently good food. Bar and main dining room are where to be seated."

  • "Looked for a restaurant open on a Sunday evening for dining before the theater. Hadn't been to Mockingbird Bistro for a good year so was glad to see they were open on Sunday's. We sat at a window table, but they do have a happy hour with great prices on spirits and food if you choose to sit at the large, comfortable bar. I ordered the lamb and my husband ordered the grouper, which was the fish special that evening. We also shared a Caesar salad, which they split for us. I ordered my lamb medium rare and it came out perfect; tender and flavorful. My husband's grouper was a generous portion; moist and perfectly prepared. The service was spot on and the wine selection quite adequate. I will not let a year pass again before dining here."

  • "Our first trip to Mockingbird was a delight. We went for Sunday Brunch and enjoyed good service and excellently prepared food from the very generous breakfast tartine, to steak and eggs. Our next visit will be for moules et frites! ;-)"

  • "Beautiful decor, romantic environment. Foie gras was tender and delicious. Lamb and seafood combo (can't remember the name) was great but the highlight was the service and generosity of this restaurant. It was my girlfriend and my anniversary dinner, and when the waiter learned of this, he sent us complimentary appetizers, and later, two chocolate truffles for dessert. I've never seen this kind of generosity from a restaurant of this class. Our waiter was very patient in explaining the menu and never pushed the drinks/dessert. Very classy place overall. Highly recommend."

  • "The food and service were wonderful. My husband had the lamb, and I had the ahi tuna. Both dishes were amazing and offered more than enough food. Mocking bird has definitely been added to our list of great dinning in Houston. "

  • "Third times even a bigger charm than the first two times we have been here to The Mockingbird. The service sensational, inviting and well, pretty much perfect because we were welcomed with genuine smiles that really made us all enjoy ordering incredible options and bevs. This time was for brunch. The best part, you can also order from the regular menu, not just the brunch menu with is a hard find. And, we had someone order something off the menu and they said, "no problem, we want to make you happy!" The cozy-ness of the place PLUS the soft glamour WITH the family felt service is hard to match. Just top notch. Fave!"

  • "Food was exceptional, bartender was highly skilled in classic cocktails and was fun to talk to. Everything would have been 100% except our waitress had an attitude or something. She didn't seem happy to be there. We had 4 people and bought two high end bottles of wine so our bill was $360. Her attitude earned her a $40 tip instead of $70. We've dined here before and never had this experience, so we will definitely go back. "

  • "Dinner friday for a birthday. Sea bass with potatoes and chicken with risotto for the main courses. Sea bass was well prepared and perfectly cooked. Chicken was very tender but it and the risotto were overly salted. Fois gras for first course was perfect. Suggested wine pairings were just right. Service was attentive but not overly so. Nice evening overall"

  • "We recently celebrated my husband's birthday at Mockingbird, and it was a memorable event. The staff were fantastic, service was excellent, and they went the extra distance to make the dinner special. Food was incredible as usual. I would put Mockingbird's Caesar salad up against any other."

  • "From the moment we arrived, we knew this was a special place. The staff was friendly, and nicely attentive. Everyone seemed genuinely interested in ensuring we had an excellent experience. And we did. Mockingbird offers some of the best hand- crafted cocktails in the city and the menu is so interesting and diverse that it took careful consideration to choose. We're really looking forward to returning and are absolutely adding to our "go-to" list!"

  • "I don't understand why these reviews have to have a "title." Seems a little silly. The waiters were very attentive and the food was delicious. We both had the special Filet Mignon and they were cooked to perfection. One of the best steaks I've ever had. The Risotto was a little nuttier than I like and the asparagus was okay, but the steak was superb."

  • "Went for a birthday celebration. What a pleasant surprise when glasses of champagne were brought to the table, compliment of the chef and hostess! We had the tasting menu - the quail was tender and perfectly seasoned. The Chilean Sea Bass was moist and cooked to perfection. The filet was marvelous and the dessert trio were YUUMMMM! Thank you, the Mockingbird team, for a wonderful evening!"

  • "This is a great place located in the Upper Kirby / Montrose / River Oaks triangle of Houston. Very good food and a nice atmosphere, although it can be a bit loud and dark inside. Parking is tough to come by here so be prepared to valet. Since the place is fairly tiny the seating can be tricky and hard to come by, especially if you are with a larger group. Overall, it's a nice hidden gem tucked inside of a neighborhood."

  • "It was a cauliflowerama. And as the hubby hates it, it was a treat to eat a favorite veggie cooked creatively. We've been following John Sheeley since the Westside Riviera. Long may the Mockingbird fly."

  • "This was a great choice. Nestled in a neighborhood, this restaurant was top notch. Our wait staff was extremely attentive, treating us as if we were the only ones in the restaurant. Our food was amazing...delicious lamb chops and sea bass. Dessert was delicious. Parking is VERY limited so we chose to valet."
