Mockingbird BistroCame here to celebrate a retirementCame here to celebrate a retirement after 31 years. The A/C was dripping on me in the main dining room, so they moved us to the back room. we were the only ones there for awhile, very quiet, had great wine suggestions from the sommelier. she suggested 2 wonderful suggestions over the evening, and we closed the place down. Absolutely wonderful food and wine, and a great time.6/13/2013 12:00:00 AMA -Was surprised at the crowd at 6:15 on a weeknight. Very busy and a little noisy.
Otherwise food was great and the wait staff attentive and efficient.6/12/2013 12:00:00 AMGreat food. So so service. This was my second visit to MBB. The food was excellent. The service this time was amateurish. I think they might be training new staff. Nonetheless, very good restaurant.6/6/2013 12:00:00 AMOutstanding service by a teamOutstanding service by a team of waiters and support staff
Upscale food prep6/3/2013 12:00:00 AMA must for happy hour!It was wonderful atmosphere, great drinks and good food! I will say that I'd go back for the HH, but probably not for dinner. The HH is priced really well, the sangria was delicious and refreshing and the lobster rissoto lollipops were to die for! And for $5, I'll definitely go back for that!! In my opinion, the dinner was overpriced and underwhelming. But maybe the lobster app put my hopes too high. I had the scallops for dinner and 3 of the 4 were a little too charred. My dish came with lump crab and warm potatoe salad. However, the lump crab was lost beneath stringy lettuce and whole fingerling potatoes. Probably more fit for a foodie. My husbands porkchop and sides were all wonderful and TONS of food.5/31/2013 12:00:00 AMGreat food and never so noisyGreat food and never so noisy that one cannot have a conversation.5/30/2013 12:00:00 AMWe love MBThis is our second time here. we love the food and service. The drinks are interesting and the menu is awesome.5/25/2013 12:00:00 AMLove this place! This is a "go to place" for me on special occasions or when people come in from out of town.5/24/2013 12:00:00 AMFine DiningThe food and service were very good to excellent - reminiscent of a fine European restaurant, but in a more comfortable setting.5/24/2013 12:00:00 AMFood was impeccableWe are foodies and this restaurant absolutely exceeded our standards. We arrived early and had a drink at the bar, which was a great place to hang out. The service at dinner was superb and being wine "snobs", the wine menu did not disappoint. We will be back.5/18/2013 12:00:00 AMNative FINALLY Trying Local GemI'm a native Houstonian and have tried all kinds of great places in Houston. And it was with great disappointment that I just now found Mockingbird. My wife and chose Mockingbird this Saturday to celebrate our anniversary and couldn't have been happier with our decision. The French Onion soup is a must! My wife had the perfectly cook scallops and tried the veal portershouse special...yes, I said veal porterhouse. It was incredible. And service is second to none. I unfortunately forgot the name of our very personable and knowledgeable server but she contributed to our awesome experience. My only complaint: why are you guys hiding?!?!? The restaurant is nestled between house on Welch and can be difficult to find but worth the trip!5/18/2013 12:00:00 AMTucked Away GemThe Mockingbird Bistro is an off the beaten path gem. Eclectic rich styling, wonderfully diverse menu. My wife and I have eaten here a few times and each time it has been an excellent experience. We took a party of 6 to Mother's Day Brunch and the food and service were great.5/12/2013 12:00:00 AMGreat - as alwaysOne of Houston's "go-to" restaurants. Between the four of us, we had a fantastic steak, great halibut, and wonderful salmon. They are still making the steak tartare appetizer, but it's off the menu. The chef is always on site and in view - every time I've been there. A solid, great restaurant.5/11/2013 12:00:00 AMSo accommodating!!!So many wonderful plates to choose from that our server actually suggested taking a few things I wanted to try and make my own plate. What a fabulous idea!!! It was not only presented with such great service, but was absolutely scrumptious!!! I can't wait to go back again!5/10/2013 12:00:00 AMExcellent wine selection.
TheExcellent wine selection.
The scallops are wonderful.
Top notch service.
Not too noisy, you can actually carry on a decent conversation!5/9/2013 12:00:00 AMVery good but not outstandingThere were a small number of items we ordered that were outstanding. Among these were the French Onion soup and the Scallops entree. Most other items ordered were quite good but in our opinion not completely worth the rather steep menu price paid. There was also one entree that I would consider sub-par. The Buffalo (bison) ribeye was flavorful, but somewhat tough and chewy. I suspect this may have been due to how it was cooked. Being predominantly or totally grass-fed, bison steak should be cooked at lower temp and more slowly. I suspect this was seared over high heat more like a prime corn-fed piece of beef. That said, service was outstandng and the ambience very good. A very nice overall dining experience if a bit pricey.5/9/2013 12:00:00 AMYumI have been meaning to go to Mockingbird for a while now and finally decided to go for my birthday. Had the beef carpaccio and the tuna. Both were incredibly good. My husband had the duck which he loves. Will definitely go back soon. I hear happy hour is very good there so I definitely want to try that on another visit.5/7/2013 12:00:00 AMExcellentI have been to this restaurant several time. Each time it has been excellent. This was the case again on my last visit. We started with salads, which were very nice. We both had fish entrees. My salmon was done very well. Dessert (crepes) were good. The wine and mix drinks were also very good. The atmosphere and pace of the dinner were also very good. I highly recommend this restaurant.5/5/2013 12:00:00 AMFirst time dining hereMy scallopers were slightly overlooked; otherwise, everything else was very good. we will be back.5/4/2013 12:00:00 AMI love this restaurant. ThisI love this restaurant. This time, I was a little disappointed because the guest I was entertaining was a vegetarian and the selections were limited.4/24/2013 12:00:00 AMThe food was terrific. IThe food was terrific. I was disappointed that they were out of duck.4/23/2013 12:00:00 AMWe have been here three timesWe have been here three times already since moving to Houston last summer. Has been a memorable experience each time. Great ambiance, attentive/friendly service, fantastic food based on higher end French cuisine with a new-age American twist. The parmesan truffled frites are a must try! Out of this world.4/20/2013 12:00:00 AMWe particularly love MockingbirdWe particularly love Mockingbird when we want a quiet, intimate meal with exceptional food.
Thank you!4/15/2013 12:00:00 AMGreat food and attentive staffWe found Mockingbird Bistro on a trip to Houston June 2012. My husband and I loved it so much we returned for a second night (and have never done that before). So when we found ourselves in Houston unexpectedly last week, we chose Mockingbird again - this time with our 4 kids. Our kids are pretty adventurous and appreciated the "compliments of the chef" ceviche starter and the truffles at the end of the meal. I didn't check kid-friendly because it depends on your kids. Ours loved it4/12/2013 12:00:00 AMEnjoyed atmosphere and quietness.Enjoyed atmosphere and quietness. Staff were very attentive. French onion soup and bib lettuce salad werer highlights! Bar was awesome!3/30/2013 12:00:00 AMThe food was very good, andThe food was very good, and our service was very good; however
the lighting is not great. Too bright. The lights on the chandeliers could be turned down to make it a little more romantic.3/30/2013 12:00:00 AMMockingbird is delicious,Mockingbird is delicious, never fail, wonderful experience with a delightful atmosphere-I can truly say I have never had anything but a perfect bite there-if there is a formula for perfection-they have it!!3/29/2013 12:00:00 AMCould have a more expandedCould have a more expanded and recognizable wine list. Very few cabs.3/23/2013 12:00:00 AMI was looking for a romanticI was looking for a romantic spot to celebrate a milestone event and came across this gem. Mockingbird has a wonderful decadent and sexy feel and ambiance; the staff are attentive and professional; and the food is fabulous. Really good produce doesn't need to be 'accessorised' too much and the Chef here has it just right. We have the rack of lamb, the duck and the salmon. All perfect. All up, probably the nicest meal we've had in Houston.3/19/2013 12:00:00 AMWonderful ambiance and food.Wonderful ambiance and food. Service was phenomenal.3/15/2013 12:00:00 AMOur favorite go-to restaurant. Our favorite go-to restaurant. Fabulous, consistent food; great service; fun atmosphere.3/15/2013 12:00:00 AMGreat food, even better wine listStopped in for Dinner while out in Houston for a wedding. My wife who's the foodie got the recommendation from the Groom who lives right around the corner, and I have to say he know's his resturants. My favorite experience was the Wine List. My wife and I both work in the industry and the Mockingbird is above and beyond in this category.
Ashley Moore's the General manager and we got talking about the list and she recommended some great finds. I was especially impressed with her hidden gems.... (Can you say Finca Domingo's 2011 Torrontes or the Hourglass Blue line Vineyards Merlot?)
A great experience all around. Now if only I visited Houston often!3/14/2013 12:00:00 AMWe were first-timers and wereWe were first-timers and were pleased with food and service. We will come again.3/11/2013 12:00:00 AMOne of best in townWhile we'd love to see a few more selections on the menu, what the restaurant does, it does very well. Our table of four had the French onion soup and the salmon tartare as apps. Both were outstanding.
Our entrees included a red snapper special, salmon, and steak frites, all of which received rave reviews. Our desserts included the sorbet medley and a layered fruit and pastry dessert, both of which were excellent.
Wine selections are very good, but markups are high. Selections lean toward American wines, with some French and a scattering of others. Service is always excellent.1/12/2013 12:00:00 AMGive your review a title (optional)Consistently good food, great ambiance and service.11/28/2012 12:00:00 AM
