  • "We had been trying to make it to Mochica for a while, and finally we did, and we are so lucky that we could get a good seat, start early our dinner and be treated to a wonderful array of Peruvian specialties, in the interpretation of chef Carlos Altamirano. The cebiche, the Seco de Cordero (Yummm!), the Pargo, everything was delicious. We highly recommend this hidden jewel of San Francisco's culinary scene."

  • "OK, so I've been here before and really enjoyed it. I enjoyed it even more this time! I could live off of the fried garbanzo bean appetizer that is served at the table!!! The food is wonderful and the service is great. I try to get there early as I like to eat early. Don't know how crowded it gets later on but I would imagine it gets packed. Always a few tables filled when I get there."

  • "It was 30 degrees outside during the unusual cold spell in December 2013. My reservation specifically asked for a "warm, quiet table." But their heat wasn't working. They could have told me that when they called me to confirm my reservation that morning. They chose not to. When our group arrived, I again asked for table in a warm spot of the restaurant. The hostess gave me a strange look and didn't say anything. Then she pointed to a table across the room. Again, when she had an opportunity to tell me that their heat wasn't working, she said nothing. Only when I asked for the heat to be turned up, did she tell me that the heat was broken. (It was about 60 degrees in there.) Shrimp's garlic sauce tasted like it was Campbell's Soup."

  • "First visit to Mochica was about as good as I could have wanted. Menu was varied just enough and you'll love it if you're a fan of tapas/small plates. I've never had such a wide selection of ceviches, we tried 2-3 and all were tasty and well presented. Ambience was ideal and place has a sense of authenticity to being Peruvian - but not schlocky, more hipster Peruvian. The size is small to medium, which contributes to Mochica's appeal. It is a manageable environment and best of all, it was just plain fun. Not pretentious at all and a hidden gem because you'd never expect to find this type of place in this area of SF."

  • "I have been to this restaurant several times as it is near my studio and easy for friends. I don't think that I would go again. Even the ambience has changed with the group table arrangement which does not work with the lighting. Food and service were fair."

  • "We reserved at Mochica thinking that is the same owner than the Mochica in Los Angeles, which is one of our preferred restaurants. We were wrong and very happy. This Mochica is fantastic, even better than the one in LA. It is difficult to decide what was the best of the 8 different courses we selected. One thing we can tell you, it was so good that we over age, which we seldom do. The Tiraditos, anticuchos, yuca frita, chicharon de pollo all were fantastic. Finally we selected three dishes as the starts of the night: Pulpito a la parilla ( we re-order), empanadas y el insuperable cheesecake de lucuma (we re-order). Wine was Albariño. The food was fantastic, the service superb and the price just right."

  • "It was rated as best of SF 2006 and since then has been ranked 25 for food on Zagat but none of my SF friends seem to have been there before. SF, you've been missing out! From small plates to larger paellas, this asian-peruvian fusion restaurant is not only delicious but spans a large menu from seafood to ribs - something for everyone. PLUS, the kitchen is very accommodating to dietary restrictions - even went so far as to make a gluten-free amuse-bouche for our table. Highly recommend this forgotten gem!"

  • "so...we've been eating at Mochica for a number of years as our go-to Peruvian restaurant for great paella and ceviche. We do love their grilled octopus as well. I have to say we were extremely disappointed, even though we did enjoy most of our dinner, the paella was a huge disappointment, small portion, a bit soupy in consistency lacking seafood and overall really missed the mark entirely. Fortunately the octopus and the fristo misto saved the evening, otherwise I think they would have lost us as a returning customer."

  • "The beef hearts are arguably the best item in the menu...tender and grilled to perfection the spicy flavors mix well with the charcoal grill. The Mochica cebiche is excellent as well...the halibut is nearly flawlessly "denatured" and served in three different spicy sauces. Not to mention the fried chick peas...Mochica is the real deal in San Francisco. Go with 6 people and order every one of the small plate selections...great food. Would prefer more choices of wine by that glass and that are more complimentary to the food. The sangria was softer than other sangria recipes and not too sweet. Order a few carafes for the table."

  • "Never ate at a Peruvian restaurant. Was pleasantly surprised with the incredible meals. They had a lot of different small plates but I opted for the dinner plate. I had the snapper and it was incredible. My friend had 2 small plates. A crispy chicken plate and an empanada. Both excellent! We also loved the garbanzo salad that they served as a starter. That was a surprisingly incredible surprise!"

  • "Peruvian cuisine is always a win! Mochica is definitely a great fit. The place is small, intimate, with nice soft lightning. The staff are extremely nice. The food is excellent. I didn't particularly like to Tuna Ceviche -Chino version- a bit too sweet for me - but that's just personal taste. I tried new stuff this time: stuffed avocado, tequeños, and the classic Aji de Gallina. Always nice to come here. Only one caveat... they don't have pisco and I really miss a Pisco Sour!!! :("

  • "I live in the neighborhood, and I went to Mochica when it first opened. I was less than impressed, but they've made some changes recently - and it's all for the better. The menu has a lot more small plates, so you can share a variety of options with your table mates. Service is attentive and efficient. The wine list is small but balanced and well-priced. The ambience is very neighborhood and comfortable."

The service was good as well (made a mistake on an order, but quickly corrected it). The restaurant itself has a small and cozy feel with the open kitchen and wooden tables. Note that they only serve beer and wine, so pisco isn't available."

  • "When a glass of "ice tea" and a glass of chica morada were brought to the table shortly after 7pm, the waiter accidentally spilled the tea all over the table, floor and my guest's lap. He apologized, and returned to clean it up and bring another glass but neglected to bring fresh napkins. The tea had no ice and only filled 2/3 of the glass. We asked for ice, as I noticed my chicha morada also lacked ice and was not filled to the top. The waiter apologized saying they were out of ice... maybe they could have made a run to get some bags of ice?! and filled our glasse to the top... While waiting for our entrees to arrive, the waiter asked us if we wanted to see the dessert menu... The food was not as good as B4."

  • "This was our second visit. The first time everything was fantastic! This time some dishes were great, some a bit disappointing. (Beef hearts were wonderful first visit, tough this time. Tequenos didn't have much flavor.) The desserts were fabulous - the cookies with dulce de leche are amazing! Recommend going with several people so you can share the small plates and taste many dishes."

  • "We had reservations for four. We were seated promptly. First thing you notice is the place is noisy and it was not even full at the time. Food was delicious. All the dishes we ordered, Tapas and main entries were v.good. Service could have been little faster. However our server was nice and explained the dishes well I will recommend Mochica if you are in the mood for a Peruvian food."
