Diner Reviews
  • "I came here with a friend to try it for DineLA and we were quite pleased with the menu. I'll be back to try their other offerings."

  • "We have been to MoChica many times. I always find something new that surprises. The Pisco Sours are made completely from scratch. They're better than the best in Peru. The portions are full and the flavors are unique, but what makes this restaurant really something extraordinary is the complete vibe. The staff go out of their way to make YOUR evening special. It's worthwhile to ask for your server's opinions on the dishes. From the moment that you are greeted at the reception desk to the moment you bid farewell, Everyone there communicates how much they value your patronage."

  • "Five of us had drinks and dinner. Its tapas style let us share & try a bunch of dishes - all were wonderful and interesting. The pisco sours were delicious. Service was friendly with just enough attention. Our first trip there was a success."

  • "drinks could be better...but overal great experience."

  • "Good food, but grossly overprized. Ceviche is about 5 morsels of fish, comes to $3 a piece. Seriously!"

  • "We live nearby and have been here before, but came on June 28, 2014 specifically for "National Ceviche Day," for which "LA Eater" said: DOWNTOWN—Mo-Chica is doing a slew of ceviche dishes on June 28 for National Ceviche Day. Think Lobster Ceviche for $15 with aji mirasol and sea urchin leche de tigre. LA Eater had it wrong, but Zarate honored the advertisement and came up with 2 "specials" in about 5 minutes. The shrimp ceviche with sweet chili sauce was excellent, as was the tuna ceviche with ricotta & grapefruit. Also had our favorites: Anticucho de Pulpo (octopus) and the Colita de Res (oxtail)."

  • "Interesting twist on Peruvian fare. If you like sushi you'll love the ceviche here. Carefully crafted food selections with layers of flavor that I enjoyed eating!"

  • "Took some colleagues and a client here, after having enjoyed several good lunches. Service was disappointing. We repeatedly had to ask for serving utensils and for water refills. No, we weren't only drinking water either--ordered a bottle of wine and several cocktails. Finally had to get manager's attention to get serving utensils as hot tapas items were getting cold! She apologized and said she'd send somebody over with them. Yeah. More than five minutes later, after I asked again. I certainly will not return, at least not for dinner."

  • "Fun, energetic, tasty. If you are looking for this then this is it. Was disappointed in the artichoke. Wasn't cooked enough, was very small for sharing, not much flavor. Octopus that was grilled and had a spicy sauce was delicious....was served on top of delicious potatoes. Quinoa with wild mushrooms was fabulous. Would have ordered more, but we were full. All of the items that were served at the tables around us looked so interesting. Wish we knew what each item was so we could order a different variety next time."

  • " One of our favorites. Peruvian with tapas and each one better than the last! We will go here before theater at the Ahmanson! Plan on being back often!!"

  • "The food was great, from the salads to the dessert! The music loud, the talk loud the restaurant atmosphere Funky. We are senior citizens and loved it but if you are fussy, don't like noise don't go!"

  • "The restaurant is located near the corner of 7th and Grand, so it is very convenient for a night out in downtown LA. The ambience was ruined for me right away by a homeless woman who seemed to be high as a kite and was hugging unsuspecting guests as they waited for a table. The restaurant was full and noisy and vibrant. The food was absolutely delicious. They masterfully executed creative combinations - the quinoa mushroom risotto and the ceviche albacore were two of my favorites. The service was typical American - lots of hovering and checking in, anxious about clearing the table the second you put your fork down, rushing to get the bill, etc.. However the food trumps any negatives."

  • "Excellent ceviche and everything else we got was just as good. Our waiter Jason was charming and professional. He brought out a little tray of 3 cookies with a candle on it since he knew we were celebrating my birthday. A very nice touch!! Will definitely go back."

  • "Despite the late seating for our reserved table and the fact that the food came out with no regard to who actually ordered it, the food was very good."

  • "Didn't disappoint me. This is my third time. Chef Zapate's unique mix of flavors makes for a great lunch."

  • "Mo-Chica was great. The food is delicious with lots of great choices. We tried many dishes (ceviche, beet salad, alpaca stew, steak, short ribs, paella, and all the desserts), and loved them all. Nice portion sizes -- not so big that you get full, but not so small that you feel gypped. The cocktails were great, too -- top-notch pisco sour and another pisco-based drink with rhubarb. And all very reasonably priced. The ambience was bustling but not frenetic, and very friendly. Service was very good. All around it's a great place. We'll be back."

  • "Food here is excellent, my favorite dish is the Quinotto, its a mushroom quinoa risotto, with parmesan and every bite you taste the olive oil. I also love the Lomo Saltado, although I wish for the price they gave you a little more, the dish they serve it in looks like the entire entree can be eaten in two bites. There is also a stew like dish made with pork, forgot name of it, that is really delicious though and another favorite these little bites of chicken with a slightly spicy sauce, love those. The pisco sour drinks are very good too. Unfortunately I am allergic to pineapple so I can't have many other drinks on the menu that have pineapple but my friend had one and said it was very good."

  • "Love this modern Peruvian cuisine. PAPA A LA HUANCAINA is so so so good. Totally different as the potato we have before. CEVICHE is a little bit sour. Peruvian seafood paella is so fresh. We all like the ESTOFADO DE ALPACA. The Alpaca tasted like beef!"

  • "The food at Mo-Chica was wonderful - very interesting, unique flavors. Everything we ordered tapas style was delicious."

  • "The food is awesome - from the grilled octopus to roasted beet salad to peruvian potato green bean salad to crispy chicken to grilled ostrich, chicken, beef skewers to seabass ceviche to ceviche mixto to alpaca stew. We ordered a pitcher of sangria and when finished and wanted to order another one - we were however told that they ran out and only sangria by the glass is available. Service is attentive BUT they have to deliver the food with more finesse - they practically threw the foodplates down and flung the tableware on top. It happened time and time again - not once. They were really busy on a Saturday night but they should slow down a bit and present the food and it's accompanied tableware in a more unhurried manner."

  • "The food and drinks were delicious. The menu is intricate and small plates can definitely cause your bill to rise quickly. With that said, it's a good idea to review the menu before you go and plan to go in parties of 2 or 4. Splitting small plates three ways isn't much fun. Service is great. Bathroom door hidden behind the curtain is weird, but understandably necessary."

  • "We had tickets for an event at the Orpheum and wanted to grab a quick bite beforehand. Mo Chica was an amazing find! We loved it! Great food, and lots of dishes to chose from. We will go back to try more of them. The specialty cocktails were also very tasty. Staff was extremely friendly and accommodating. They were not bothered by the fact that we said we needed to get in and out in one hour or less. "

  • "came to dine with a friend who is an avid fan of peruvian cuisine and wanted something different from our usual haunts. the drinks, food and service all lived up to our expectations. great place for friends willing to share plates and get a taste of everything. So far i think i've had about 80% of the menu and not including the shrimp that i can't eat due to allergies, i've had nothing but a great experience here. Definitely recommend to anyone looking for a less exhausting over the top place and just wants a great atmosphere and good food."

  • "It was out first time dining at Mo Chica and we loved everything we had from the ceviche mixto to the stewed alpaca. Truly amazing. Flavorful and fun. the Pisco Sour was delicious. The service attentive and informative. The ambiance lively and the food amazing."

  • "the simplest dishes were the best; you can tell there is talent in the kitchen. the chicken, rice and potatoes were excellent. faltered with the trendier, fusion dishes: too many ingredients, too fussy. that's the only reason I wouldn't go back. need more of the simple basic dishes. "

  • "real disappointment; too much spice, but still no flavor; we tried ceviche, fried chicken, and seafood paella; chipotle would have been a better dinner; "

  • "Excellent food. The African American hostess was very arbitrary. We could sit in the front at a communal table or wait and sit in back. Could we see the back? No, important meeting. I'll just take a quick peek. Totally empty. You'll have to sit along the side and wait. 10 mins. pass. She sits us in the darkest corner at a bench. Table comes up to my neck. All room is empty. Can we sit at this next table with chairs? No, it's reserved. But we made a reservation too. Sorry, a table on opposite wall is available. We sit, order, have dinner. Tables gradually fill. After 1 1/2 hours we leave. The reserved table is still empty. "

  • "I have had Peruvian food a couple of times before and, while I find it mildly interesting, it is never something I find myself saying I want particularly. Mo-Chica has changed that for me. The food is amazing. Interesting, refreshing, engaging - it is just fantastic. The lunch special - adding two sides and a small desert for a small up-charge is totally worth it. I normally do not have desert at lunch, but the little piece of, literally the best tres leches cake I have ever had, is perfect! No food coma. Can't wait to go back again, and I have already been twice. "

  • "Mo-Chica proved to have very good quality food with a unique variety of dishes from Peru. The Quinoa salad is deliciously filled with flavor. The Chicken with rice is also very delicious with very tender cuts of chicken and amazingly tastes. The menu is vast and most can not go wrong with any selection. The service was a bit slow this time during a moderate period. We had to ask for the server on two occasions. They also have a great selection for Happy Hour which ends at 06:00 pm. "

  • "Great spot to dine alone, or with your mother-in-law! You can't hear the guests at your table over the din! Must shout or just nod blindly hopping for the best! But not to worry, the food makes it totally worth the headache and sore through afterwards! I would go back for the Arroz con Pollo in a heart beat! We went top of a Saturday night dinner hour. Fun crowd. Walked over to the Last Book Store afterwards to burn some calories from the two desserts we had! I'm not really a wine person but they seemed to have a nice selection. Had a red from Chili that was perfect!"

  • " Met friends from the north OC midway in downtown. Friends going to Peru this summer and wanted to try MoChica. Did not disappoint! Lively crowd, very friendly and helpful waiter who took great care to explain everything on menu from special drinks through dessert. Tried all his recommendations, each a hit. Particularly loved the evenings two specials, clams and yellowtail. So much fun and a great destination. Young crowd so noise level energetic. We sat in a great booth next to the open kitchen which was just perfect."

  • "Little gem of a restaurant. Very creatively presented Peruvian dishes such as ceviche. We had the potato, avocado and crab appetizer. Also had the quinoa salad followed by the paella. Each dish was not only delicious but very creative. We also had wine from the Rioja Valley in Spain. Both choices were excellent - smooth & flavorful. The only complaint is the parking situation. We were lucky and found a meter on the street but there is a parking lot half a block away. We can't wait to return and try some of the other items on the menu."

  • "Peruvian food has always been one of our favorites, so experiencing Mo-Chica's inspired, gourmet take on the cuisine was especially delightful. Every dish we ordered was fantastic, especially the lomo saltado, pan con tuna, and anticucho de pulpo (one of the best octopus dishes ever). The drinks were excellent, too; we started with the classic Pisco Sour before shifting gears to the smoky, well-balanced Oaxacalifornia Love, which was perfect with the meal."
