Diner Reviews
  • "There are many great restaurants in downtown Chicago. All with very good food. But the defining difference at MK was our waiter, Sergio! Outstanding. As good as I have had."

  • "It had been three or four years since my last visit to MK. The menu changed to be more Mediterranean than before. Lots of seafood in the menu. They became more capable to express the nuance of the broth, and we liked it. We ordered White fish/Lobster and Duck for main, and both of us were extremely satisfied with the taste and presentation. Dessert was too big for us. I wish they can serve in a more decent portion and in more sophisticated way at least for the last course. Oh, also, they have not idea between Cointreau and Grand Manier. Bad. The overall experience was good. I decide not to give full score on service only because we did not get the table we liked. I booked three weeks ahead of time, the reservation was 5:30."

  • "Went here for GF birthday . Was seated by 4 top turned to 5 top. Servers constantly squeezing by to serve rest of dining room and bumping into chair. Asked to be moved as soon as this occurred and before even being seated and offered isolated table on second floor so stayed put. Food was standard interesting but heavy on salt. Salt with bread; salt in summer salad; salt with soft shell crabs."

  • "I celebrated my birthday here with my parents and we were all so pleased with our dining experience. The food, cocktails, wine, dessert and service were all top notch. We also were seated upstairs in the restaurant which had a great view of all the tables below. Moreover, the restaurant was able to customize the menu headings to mention it being my birthday and I was able to choose the two desserts I wanted brought out with a candle to seal the celebration. I would absolutely recommend this place to anyone looking for a great date night spot or celebrating a special occasion."

  • "Good food - great presentation - slow service. My wife ordered the white fish and lobster - great dish. I ordered the chefs tastings menu - very good but not worth the price tag nor the wait. I actually preferred my wife's dish compared to my 6 dishes - not to mention it was 1/2 the price of mine on top of it. Our biggest complaint for the evening would be time...3 hrs for a dinner for 2 is very long...My wife was finished with her meal and I still had 3 more plates coming...she was almost asleep before dinner was over :)"

  • "Highly educated wait staff with out-of-this-world flavors and pairings. I can personally say it was the most detailed dining experience I've ever had - with flavor being at the forefront of every aspect of the meal -from the cocktails, to each dish to the wine pairing and desserts - everything was fabulous. And, while the food and service was top notch - the atmosphere was unpretentious and comfortable. I loved it."

  • "Service was excellent and staff was extremely attentive but not distracting. Dinner was also very good though I was not blown away by anything on the menu. I enjoyed the oysters and seared tuna entree. I will definitely return though it would be nice to see something more interesting on the menu."

  • "We came to Chicago last weekend to celebrate my wife's 40th birthday. MK was the crown jewel of the weekend. We'd made a reservation, but our show got out early, so we got to the restaurant early. We had a drink at the bar and they got us a table far earlier than we anticipated. Everyone that worked at the restaurant was friendly and personable. When we were seated, they provided us with a personalized specials menu that said "Happy Birthday" to my wife, which was a really nice touch. The wine and both our meals were wonderful. I had a steak, and the flavors jumped out at me on the first bite. Desserts were very good, and were presented wonderfully. They even wrote happy birthday in chocolate on my wife's plate! Highly recommend!"

  • "Everything about MK Restaurant is outstanding. We choose to have the oysters for an appetizer, they were delicious with the vinaigrette & the chorizo to finish up with was a perfect combination.. Thank you so much Lisa for always coming to greet us. Your pastries are simply... perfect. You can never go wrong at MK Restaurant. Thank you all for a wonderful time."

  • "Good menu, great service, delicious food, and not too pricey."

  • "Chefs tasting menu was delicious. Great that not all parties at the table had to get the tasting menu."

  • "MK provides the perfect balance between friendly and formal with its exposed brick walls of a former paint factory crossed with lovely linens, smart service and fine food. Soft shell crab was on the menu as an entree, and they agreed to make just one for my husband as an appetizer. It was not breaded so just the crab flavor came through, and it was beautifully presented with pea tendrils. He then had the duck breast which was perfectly cooked. I opted for the seared tuna which was also just right. We ordered their famous s'mores dessert (yum!), but because it was my birthday, we also received a second dessert for free... a nice touch! Manager Jennifer stopped by for a chat; all in all a wonderful meal!"

  • "This is our fourth time at this restaurant. We had great experience but not this time. The food was mediocre."
    Dined on 7/17/2014
  • "My wife loved her tuna. My steak was cooked perfectly, but it was severely over salted. The fries were over-salted as well, but the aioli dipping sauce was delicious. My garlic soup with lobster was bland. Our server was extremely nice, as was the hostess who chatted us up about the desserts. But unfortunately our server had too many tables, and she could not balance. Our entrees arrived before we finished our appetizers. And we waited a long time to order. Also, our water glasses were not refilled until after we had finished our meals. Overall we still had a nice time, but for the price, we expected a little bit better."

  • "As a former Sommelier & Restaurant Manager, I'm very particular about my restaurant experiences and MK BLEW ME AWAY!! From the knowledgable and articulate bartender to the well dressed Host / Manager our experience started off with excellent energy and attention. As we proceeded to the table we were greeted with a very engaging, knowledgable server with an accent that was very charming. As the Sommelier / GM Paul, assisted us through our experience he Expertly paired bottle after bottle of their AWESOME wine list with Chef's AMAZING Dishes. In my opinion it was the most perfectly seasoned food overall that I've ever enjoyed at any restaurant. If you want to have an amazing dining experience MK WILL Deliver!"

  • "mk is one of the best restaurants in Chicago. The service is top notch and the food is outstanding. The presentation of the food and the taste of the food is second to none. The people in my group ordered different appetizers and main dishes and everyone loved the food. You can't go wrong because every item on the menu is flavorful. Finally, the desserts are spectacular. The combination of flavors in the desserts is creative and wonderful."

  • "This was our second visit to MK, the first time being around 6 years ago. The food and service was as good as it was the first time we ate there. They went out of their way to make it a very memorable dining experience for me and my family. Rarely do I like everything about a dining experience but this one could not have been better."

  • "Recently celebrated a wedding anniversary at MK and they gave us the royal treatment from start to finish. A great table on the railing upstairs where you view the entire restaurant, bar and out to the street with the added pleasure of the glass skylight. We both had the Chef's 5-course menu, which focused on seafood. Every course was superb! The staff is most gracious. A lovely, romantic, fun evening!"

  • "MK lived up to our expectations...superior dining & service without totally breaking the bank. We loved the design & layout. Very imaginative use of space. I have only two criticisms: 1. The entree portion could have been larger. The duck, which was perfectly prepared, must have been the smallest duck on the farm, as each thin slice, without the fat skin pad, was no bigger than my thumb. Lentils are cheap; why did I get only about 3 tablespoons full? I thought the background music selection was too loud & choices of music did not match the elegance of the room & staff. We appreciated the recognition of our special occasion. The octopus appetizer was superb, but again, could have been larger. Service was perfect."

  • "A great restaurant that has stood the test of time in Chicago dining scene. Fantastic decor with very creative menu but best of all is the personal touches and staff. Very knowledgeable yet welcoming and friendly. Hard to find with many of the new "hip spots". Thoroughly enjoyed the seafood tasting menu. Wonderful spot"

  • "We have been going to MK for about 9 years, dined there this weekend, and it's as good as ever. They have slightly reworked the front area bar/lounge and some minor changes to the dining room, which has "freshened" it up to maintain a clean chic look. Our server Steve was great, very attentive and personable. My wife wanted the steak but also loves the accoutrements that went with the Bison, (mushrooms, fiddlehead ferns etc), Steve solved the dilemma by substituting them with the steak. She also had the "Two Tartars" of tune and Fluke which were outstanding. I chose the Endive salad and a Filet/Foie-Gras/Potato Pancake special that was amazing. And last but certainly not least, they still offered the Cake and Shake dessert."

  • "I could not have chosen a more perfect place to dine with an old friend visiting from out of town. My husband and I had wanted to try MK since it is very close to our home and we were not disappointed. High notes were the pheasant, scallops and lobster. The only low note was the lamb fettucine, which had VERY spicy sausage and lots of fatty pieces."

  • "Food was quite good, but a raucous table of seven next to us with too much to drink and a slightly grumpy waiter dampened the evening."

  • "From the minute we walked in, we knew we had stumbled into a great find! The atmosphere is very cool with a wonderful energy, the service is above and beyond, and the food is absolutely fabulous. Saada makes sure that every aspect of your meal is perfect, while Jessica the manager bedazzles you with her infectious smile and enthusiasm. When we couldn't decide between the Cake and Shake or the Triple threat, she surprised us with both... and a visit from the pastry chef! No detail is left to chance, but everything is done with ease and grace at this fantastic restaurant. Our only complaint is that they are not open for every meal:) We will most surely be back next time we visit Chitown!"

  • "Everyone on the internet recommended this restaurant and the reviews were right. Low key restaurant with great food and great service. Especially appreciate the low noise level where you can still hold a conversation."

  • "We chose a food flight and wine pairing at a set price. The server added a second taste of wine to about half of the wine flight for my wife and me. I asked the server if I could have a last small extra taste of the dessert wine and the manager stormed up to our table and complained to me that had had extra tastes of wine already (I didn't know it wasn't part of the program) and asked if he could charge me $20 more after touting how much he had to pay to buy the bottle. His attitude was abrupt and embarrassed me in front of my wife. She was infuriated with his demeanor. We promptly paid our bill and left-embarrassed by the manager when he wanted $20 more on a bill that was already $340 for two! Outrageous. I will never return there-ever."

  • "Since we do not live in Chicago, on our visits we like to try new spots. This time we decided to return to an old favorite and found it as fresh and innovative as it was on our first visit. Care is taken to paint a picture in their descriptions of each well thought out course. Local sourced and fresh are the name of the game. The food is innovative but still approachable. We won't take so long to return to one of our favorites."

  • "The entrees were delicious but the desert was just ok. The service was OK but for a nice restaurant I expected better. For example they did not change my fork after I used it once. They just out it aside and took my plate. Overall the experience was 3.5 stars."

  • "food was some of the best I have ever had in terms of American cuisine. loved the "walk in the woods" dessert which combined oats, fruit and sunflower seed butter into an interesting dessert bar. Also the best salmon I have ever had--cannot say more good things about the food here. It was a little loud and the service a little slow but overall highly recommend it."

  • "MK is the first restaurant to ever receive a 5-Star Rating from me. We hadn't been there in a few years but decided to go for a special anniversary and we're so glad we did. The room is gorgeous -- 2 levels plus an open loft dining area under a huge skylight. Our waiter was ultra professional, sensing our every need and tending to us without being intrusive. We started with the artichoke salad and the endive salad and both were excellently prepared. We each ordered the salmon and agreed that it was the best salmon we've eaten in Chicago. The chef "gets" fish! It was delicately prepared medium rare and served with bok choy and a light sauce. I'm salivating just thinking about it. Great wine list, too."

  • "First time I went to MK was 6 years ago and I had an amazing experience. I always wanted to go back. We finally did last Sunday for my birthday. The food was great but the service was poor. The waitress didn't care much for us except to push filing wine in our glasses. Also the music was pretty loud and for a Sunday night I thought it was not really appropriate."
