Mitsunobu has great aspirations, but is currently falling short on both quality and service. The tempura was not light and crispy and the beet salad a bunch of greens with some beets on top. Although we asked for the tempura after the salads, all arrived at the same time. Nice ambience, but they need to improve the food.

We have been to Mitsunobu twice before and it's been consistently great. We had the chef's menu. For $98 you get an 8-course meal with the option to "upgrade" for additional sashimi, or nigiri. The courses are well-paced, the servers pleasant. Everything was well-prepared and beautifully presented. The food packs a flavor punch, yet is not overly rich (as you'd expect of a similar multi-course meal in a French restaurant). At the end of the meal you feel satiated, yet not over-full/overwhelmed. We'll likely return for another date night.

Ingredients being used are much better than normal Japanese food but the costs are at least double. I did not order prix fixe because not all dishes were what I wanted to eat and it did not seem to be very creative. It did not mean it would not be good though.

The ambiance is nothing to write home about. The restaurant is located in a shopping mall next to Safeway. The service was slow. The sushi was good quality but way expensive for what you get. I will not be going back or taking clients there again. Caveat: we did not do the chef's tasting menu-- perhaps that is why the place is well rated. Also, the restaurant wasn't busy at all on a Wednesday night.

Mitsunobo is not the ordinary Japaanese restaurant. They have exquisite presentation of the dishes, many of which are works of art. They satisfy the eye as well as the taste. The service is excellent yet unobstrusive. I would recommend this restaurant as a special treat.

I have been to Mitsunobu quite a few times and have consistently been impressed with the service and the quality of the food. The staff was very considerate and always made sure that our water and tea cups were full and that we were enjoying our meals. I always order the Chirashi and couldn't say enough about the variety of excellently prepared sashimi, perfectly cooked rice, unique soy sauce, and presentation. I would highly recommend this restaurant to anyone.

They restaurant is too arrogant to serve chicken of any kind. The place totally empty Friday snd Saturday night, yet oddly pretentious and do not take reservstions. The food is weird and tasteless and outrageouly expensive. The service is fine, but then again, we were the only table at the placr (4 peoplr) most of Friday nigh. She added 18% tip on food and tax - both practices sre not legal in California.

The first thing I noticed as I entered was a bad smell like an open toilet or something. The staff were not "clean" meaning I felt like I walked into a seedy bar. Lots of staff just hanging around. I would have expected a cooler place with less staff "hanging around". Sashimi is top notch although still not at the Sawa Sushi Level but beats Kiss Seafood and Sakae Sushi (who do have their Tapas down I admit). The free parking, Menlo Park location helps.

  • Excellent food with up-sell service
    OpenTable Diner Since 2007
    Dined on 3/29/2014
Excellent food experience. Only negative was the up-sell pressure from the waitstaff to purchase expensive drinks and supplements. Even though we ordered most of the available supplements, the waiter seemed visibly disappointed that we didn't order a bottle of sake for several hundred dollars on top of it. We're not sake connoisseurs, so it would have been wasted on us anyway.

We arrived at the restaurant promptly based on our reservation time. After sitting down for 10-15 min no one greeted us, no one asked us to see if we needed anything to drink. The waiters didn't even look at us and it wasn't super busy until we stopped one of them and asked for water. Once we ordered, food arrived in reasonable time and it was quite delicious. The chef even prepared us a special dish, sea urchin from Tokyo. Very nice. My wife is from Japan and she told me one of the dishes - sweet prawn sashimi, the chef should have taken the raw shrimp head, deep fried it with special seasoning and served it but the busboy took our plate with the head as waste. Somehow after dinner we both were really thirsty... MSG?

Mitsunobu is one of our favorite Japanese restaurants. Excellent food, highly attentive but not intrusive service, dignified and quiet atmosphere - like some of the best restaurants in Tokyo. A jewel of the strip mall and usually a pleasant surprise. For some reason, our recent experience did not leave us raving and wanting more. Service was good but a bit stressed and the sashimi was very good but not excellent. Soup and sake were great and it was still a very good experience but normally it's 5 stars throughout. Maybe everybody was a bit tired that day.

Wow. Let's start with chef Mitsunobu's special roll of the night: uni and avocado inside, topped with seared Wagyu beef. Amazingly rich and tasty. As other's have pointed out, this isn't the place to go for a cheap meal - this roll is $25. But worth every penny. And 8 pieces so all four of us got to have a little. Besides that, we shared a couple sake samplers and various other types of sushi: ahi, hamachi, amaebi, uni, unagi. And some of the special fish for the night, which included kanpachi, toro (delicious!) and firefly squid. Once we were good and full, we finished the evening with sesame ice cream, yuzu sorbet and mango mochi. All told, $80 per person including some sake and dessert. Well worth it for an amazing dinner every time.

Mitsunobu's food quality remains at a high level and continues to satisfy. On two recent visits for lunch we had the chirashi sushi set and was completely impressed by the freshness of the fish and the delicious small side dishes. At $35 it is not inexpensive, but we feel the quality and taste are well worth it.

$182 for 2 people and we left hungry. Tiny sushi portions; the $32 seafood hot pot was the size of a bowl of soup and contained 1 shrimp, 1 scallop, 4 tiny clams, and 2 paper clip-sized pieces of crab meat; the tempura was tasty but no better than many, many others Japanese restaurants that charge much less.

Over-hyped and not worth the price. Inside ambiance nice, but outside ambiance is poor - the restaurant is in a second-rate mall, with its front door looking onto a gas station from a distance of 40 feet. Food was fair, but certainly not great. Dinner took nearly three hours - including 40 minutes to get the first course. The Chef's menu is the centerpiece of the restaurant's menu, but one quickly found that even the descriptions of the food were wrong - most notably on one dish a sliced sardine was substituted for salmon, despite the menu saying in both the title and the description that it was a salmon dish. Not a bad restaurant; just not what it's sometimes said to be and certainly not worth the price ($120-150 pp without drinks).

Very high quality fish, fresher than fresh vegetables, an all-around superb Japanese chef. Outstanding tempura. The locale is a little surprising-- off to the side of a shopping mall up Sand Hill Rd-- but very easy to find and with ample parking near the entrance. We've been here a number of times for lunch and dinner, each time very impressed by the quality of the food, freshness of the fish, and pleasant ambience (particularly given its unlikely location in a shopping center). This time my wife and I had the chirashi zushi for lunch and, once again, the fish was superb. Mitsunobu is a gem to have nearby.

This place was somewhere I wanted to go long time and I finally did and was very happy that I went there. The front lady was very polite and everyone in the restaurant kept watching us for anything that we needed. It is a Japanese way that even there is a waiter assigned to the table, anyone who notices that we are raising the hand or trying to locate someone, they notices right away before I actually raise (they notice I am looking for someone before raising the hand). That is how I really felt comfortable and treated well. The way it was served was also great with detail Kaiseki style to enjoy with eye. Probably not enough portion. I recommend this place for special occasion.

You can select a la carte or the chef's 8 course special. The eight course special is delicious, but each item is cooked after the previous is consumed so the entire meal takes 2+ hours. Great for a special romantic evening. A la carte will allow you chef choices as well as sashimi and sushi that is excellent. They close for dinner early, 8:30. Lunch is only a la carte. Will definitely be going back!
