Diner Reviews
  • "For those of you going through withdrawal symptoms because Elements is temporarily closed, Mistral has the fix you need. The food is not as complicated, but just as delicious. The small plates allow you to explore the menu and discover wonderful flavors. The bruschetta with heirloom tomatoes pulsates with flavor. Do yourself a favor and make a reservation."

  • "Everything that we ate was awesome. Ben Nerenhausen and Scott Anderson's combination of flavors are magical. I have to try Elements. Loved the design of the place too, especially the kitchen. I might have to take the drive down to princeston more often."

  • "Enjoyed each of the six tasting plates we ordered although the cold apricot soup suffered from too much heat. Because of this, we were unable to identify the soup's base as apricot."

  • "Enjoyed lunch there Thursday with a colleague. Cold apricot soup with vadouvan was so exceptional that I took my wife back today for Sunday brunch. We both had a bowl of that soup, which was a bit spicier than Thursday's, but excellent. Our main courses were also first rate -- scrambled eggs with arugula, roast tomato and English muffin were perfectly done and nicely presented. My wife enjoyed the seared haddock as well. Mistral is a great addition to the rich culinary offerings in Princeton. The formula of small plates at moderate prices is very good, and dishes we have tried are all creative and appealing. Outdoor seating is quieter (music inside is a bit too loud). There is a novel gas fire the length of one wall."

  • "We had a surprise, last minute delicious meal at Mistral on a saturday night. It was the middle of summer and we went early, which is probably why we got in. The outdoor seating area is great looking and fun. The food really sets this place apart. We especially liked the small bites dishes, fava toast, goat cheese and shabazzi was truly out of this world."

  • "Lovely dining experience with excellent food. But how I wish there were dairy-free options for dessert! At our request, the waiter found some sorbet, much appreciated."

  • "After hearing such great things about Mistral, I was very disappointed with my experience there. The food is good, but the service ruined the dinner for our party. I understand the restaurant's practice of delivering plates as they are ready, but this is no excuse for making us wait over thirty minutes for our final entre, and then having it served cold! Also, food that we did not order was delivered to our table and, when we inquired about our missing dish (pork loin), we were told that it was done and would be brought to our table immediately. That did not happen; in fact, we saw our waitress carrying the dish, but stopping to chat with other patrons for several minutes before delivering the dish to our table. Totally unacceptable."

  • "I'd come back again to this place as I loved the modern interior and some of the dishes, such as the black cod, were fantastic. But 2 major mistakes: (1) the short ribs plate was one of the biggest rip-offs I ever experienced in a restaurant (2 bite sized pieces - and I mean bite sized - for $22.. YOU GOT TO BE KIDDING ME!!!) and at one point between dishes, we waited SSSSOOOOOOOO long (25 mins?) for the next dish to arrive."

  • "We loved the new outdoor room!!! It is so fun to order and share the small plates. We look forward to seeing the new addition! Ann and Ken Sokoloff"

  • "We went there to celebrate a birthday. We know Mistral is very good, but it exceeded the expectations. From sweet breads to brown butter bread pudding, the small plates distinguished themselves through excellent preparation and not repeating an ingredient or spice throughout. The chicken liver, short rib, squid, falafel dishes all wowed, as did the many other small plates that we sampled. The service was attentive and the ambience excellent. Two decades ago calling a place "the best restaurant in Princeton" didn't mean much; fast forward to today, and it says something."

  • "This was a fun experience.. Great atmosphere and frankly.. the price was terrific relative to the quality"

  • "A don't miss - if you are a foodie; can deal with the tapas bar, small plate approach; and don't mind spending 30 bucks on lunch. Given that this is the offshoot of the very high-end Elements, you expect great food and you get it. Beautiful toast with goat cheese, tomatoes, and greens; fabulous sausage, and deeply flavorful chicken with delightful sides."

  • "I certainly enjoyed trying the recent changes to the menu. in this case, it was the lamb tartare and the pork loin. Both plates were outstanding."

  • "Absolutely excellent! The food was amazing... best I've had anywhere in Princeton in 15 years."

  • "I have been a few times since opening and had mixed feelings about the dishes BuT the menu refinements are now perfect! My husband and I loved EVERY dish we tried and service was great too! Fabulous! Congratulations to the team!! We Look forward to the cocktail list when Elements comes over!"

  • "Basic cooking skills are lacking; no flavor or bad mixture of flavors, either too greasy when it should be fresh or too soggy when it should be crispy."
    Dined on 7/31/2014
  • "Semi-small servings, usually 3 for a meal, delivered randomly. Service is erratic, sometimes 3 plates to one, long wait for other. Food excellent, sometimes surprising. BYO."

  • "Savory sauces atop beautifully presented fish, fowl and red meat. Sauces rich with character and flavor - the work of a thoughtful food chemist/artisan. Will definitely return to further explore."

  • "the food and service were great. the noise level was close to intolerable. it was loud the other time we had eaten there too. this is a shame. the temperature rose to 78º-we were next to the thermostat."

  • "We had dinner on a weeknight in late July, and the menu featured lots of unusual ingredients. Everything was beautifully presented and the waitstaff were very knowledgeable."

  • "Great dining experience; loved how they tweaked the menu to adjust to some nice summer vegetables."

  • "If you enjoy dining in the small plate mode, give Mistral a shot. Our group sampled practically everything on the menu, and nothing missed the mark. Some like the chicken livers or sweetbreads, some like the tuna and fluke. Very nice outside dining. Will return."

  • "If you like different kinds of taste at one time this place is the place to try . The small plates are unique and the taste for each tantalize your Taste buds everytime ."

  • "The combination of unique flavors and unique dishes are combined to make the small dishes into a wonderful lunch. We had a chicken dish that could not be more tender and flavorful. The rye pasta was cooked perfectly. The cold apricot soup was like a Middle Eastern gazpacho. A terrific meal"

  • "Love it, love it! We hope that Elements the "parent" restaurant moving to the same building will not spoil Mistral!!!"

  • "My husband and I decided to try Mistral because its sister restaurant, Elements, which we love, is in the midst of relocating. Our dinner was incredible, every bite was better than the last. Love the fact that its a BYO. We can't wait to go back!"

  • "Very Expensive. The selections are limited. They do not have menu for kids. Help your self, find another fine dining restaurant that is worth every penny."

  • "We enjoyed our dinner. Dishes are fun and interesting. Nicely vibrant and little too noisy."

  • "Wonderful, attentive young waitress, Michelle took the time to go over food allergies in our party & communicated well with chef & with us. Very much appreciated. Food was delicious & beautifully presented."

  • "A wonderful dining experience. Excellent and varied "tapas" menu and the food lives up to its billing with service "as you like it"--efficient or leisurely. With Elements temporarily shuttered while they engineer the move to co-locate with Mistral, the menu is reminiscent of many of the former favorites."

  • "What a delicious combination the Sweet Breads followed by the Beef Wellington made. Highly recommended!"
    Dined on 7/6/2014
  • "The plates are small but filling. It was lunch so we had 4. Since they were rich, it was enough. Down side? Pork just OK and there is no bread provided to sop up the luscious oil at the bottom of the grilled calamari (only 3 pieces). You are really only full because of the fat content."

  • "While I have criticized the noise level here, I have never found fault with the food. The chef creates the most imaginative, delicious combinations and I love the Tapas servings. Sharing with friends is always fun and I've never had anything I didn't like. Our server, Noah, was charming and helpful. All good. 4th of July and it was relatively quiet when we got there at 9:00 PM."

  • "very nice experience..liked the varied selection of small plates..several dishes, however, were definitely too salty!!"
    Dined on 7/4/2014
  • "Small plates are the menu here. The gnocchi was fantastic, beef wellington was Ok (lacked taste), corn bread was excellent. The chicken liver is a pate dish which was very good. Our waiter, Noah, was very nice. The décor was comfortable...outside dining is an enclosed patio off of the dining room. Very interesting restaurant and we would definitely go back."

  • "The Princeton restaurant scene isn't exactly dynamic nor inventive but Mistral is changing that one great dish at a time. Small plates of extremely well-done dishes that are both flavorsome and unusual (the cold pea soup), mixed with excellent standards such as the grilled squid. I had a superb toasted cheese sandwich made with aged gouda and served with maple syrup and home-made ice-cream, yes, ice-cream - as a starter, which was fantastic. The space is inviting - open kitchen, lots of warm woods, its pretty relaxed, can get noisy and has both indoor and outdoor seating. With an indoor and open kitchen the AC inside has to work pretty hard and is not always up to scratch, but whatever - the food by far makes up for it. Plus its BYOB. Go!"

  • "Interesting and eclectic menu - think TAPAS with a wide variety. Definitely want to order many items to try so this is a great place for a group. Some favorite items: grilled squid, black cod, warm falafel salad. Service was knowledgeable and friendly. We didn't realize this was a bring your own restaurant so they held our table while we picked up a bottle of wine at a local shop."
