Diner Reviews
  • "Great dining experience; loved how they tweaked the menu to adjust to some nice summer vegetables."

  • "If you enjoy dining in the small plate mode, give Mistral a shot. Our group sampled practically everything on the menu, and nothing missed the mark. Some like the chicken livers or sweetbreads, some like the tuna and fluke. Very nice outside dining. Will return."

  • "If you like different kinds of taste at one time this place is the place to try . The small plates are unique and the taste for each tantalize your Taste buds everytime ."

  • "The combination of unique flavors and unique dishes are combined to make the small dishes into a wonderful lunch. We had a chicken dish that could not be more tender and flavorful. The rye pasta was cooked perfectly. The cold apricot soup was like a Middle Eastern gazpacho. A terrific meal"

  • "Love it, love it! We hope that Elements the "parent" restaurant moving to the same building will not spoil Mistral!!!"
    Dined on 7/16/2014
  • "Excellent tapas-like food. Had a great lunch! Each dish was delicious, with such a varied menu that it was difficult to choose. We will definitely return for another lunch or dinner!!!"

  • "The menu is interesting and inventive, this is great Princeton find at a reasonable price."

  • "My husband and I decided to try Mistral because its sister restaurant, Elements, which we love, is in the midst of relocating. Our dinner was incredible, every bite was better than the last. Love the fact that its a BYO. We can't wait to go back!"
    Dined on 7/14/2014
  • "Very Expensive. The selections are limited. They do not have menu for kids. Help your self, find another fine dining restaurant that is worth every penny."
    Dined on 7/10/2014
  • "We enjoyed our dinner. Dishes are fun and interesting. Nicely vibrant and little too noisy."
    Dined on 7/9/2014
  • "Wonderful, attentive young waitress, Michelle took the time to go over food allergies in our party & communicated well with chef & with us. Very much appreciated. Food was delicious & beautifully presented."
    Dined on 7/6/2014
  • "A wonderful dining experience. Excellent and varied "tapas" menu and the food lives up to its billing with service "as you like it"--efficient or leisurely. With Elements temporarily shuttered while they engineer the move to co-locate with Mistral, the menu is reminiscent of many of the former favorites."

  • "What a delicious combination the Sweet Breads followed by the Beef Wellington made. Highly recommended!"
    Dined on 7/6/2014
  • "The plates are small but filling. It was lunch so we had 4. Since they were rich, it was enough. Down side? Pork just OK and there is no bread provided to sop up the luscious oil at the bottom of the grilled calamari (only 3 pieces). You are really only full because of the fat content."

  • "While I have criticized the noise level here, I have never found fault with the food. The chef creates the most imaginative, delicious combinations and I love the Tapas servings. Sharing with friends is always fun and I've never had anything I didn't like. Our server, Noah, was charming and helpful. All good. 4th of July and it was relatively quiet when we got there at 9:00 PM."

  • "very nice experience..liked the varied selection of small plates..several dishes, however, were definitely too salty!!"
    Dined on 7/4/2014
  • "Small plates are the menu here. The gnocchi was fantastic, beef wellington was Ok (lacked taste), corn bread was excellent. The chicken liver is a pate dish which was very good. Our waiter, Noah, was very nice. The décor was comfortable...outside dining is an enclosed patio off of the dining room. Very interesting restaurant and we would definitely go back."

  • "The Princeton restaurant scene isn't exactly dynamic nor inventive but Mistral is changing that one great dish at a time. Small plates of extremely well-done dishes that are both flavorsome and unusual (the cold pea soup), mixed with excellent standards such as the grilled squid. I had a superb toasted cheese sandwich made with aged gouda and served with maple syrup and home-made ice-cream, yes, ice-cream - as a starter, which was fantastic. The space is inviting - open kitchen, lots of warm woods, its pretty relaxed, can get noisy and has both indoor and outdoor seating. With an indoor and open kitchen the AC inside has to work pretty hard and is not always up to scratch, but whatever - the food by far makes up for it. Plus its BYOB. Go!"

  • "Interesting and eclectic menu - think TAPAS with a wide variety. Definitely want to order many items to try so this is a great place for a group. Some favorite items: grilled squid, black cod, warm falafel salad. Service was knowledgeable and friendly. We didn't realize this was a bring your own restaurant so they held our table while we picked up a bottle of wine at a local shop."

  • "We made our first trip to Mistral and it won't be our last! We asked our server, Michelle L. to choose our dinner selections from the menu for us as we're a bit on the adventurous side. She and the food did not disappoint - one was tastier than the last, from the small bite bacon beignets (outstanding) and the fried oyster salad (scrumptious) to the smoked arctic char (yummy) and the beef wellington (mouth watering). Every dish from start to finish was delicious and perfectly prepared! Atmosphere was friendly, relaxed and inviting and the staff was attentive and knowledgeable!"

  • "this has been such a welcome addition to downtown Princeton with excellent food in interesting presentations, etc. Concern is that it will change as parent moves in next door. please don't"

  • "A perfect dinner on 3 plates: Chicken liver is an excellent choice, as is the grilled veggie salad. It's the first time I had the garganelli, but I really liked the cured lamb that they use in this light pasta dish."

  • "Mistral's food is fabulous and the selections are like nothing you would ever think of. Inventive, delicious and reasonable. A great place for sharing a marvelous array of flavors and combinations. But Mistral is NOISY. Energetic? No. TOO LOUD. They built an outdoor pavilion which is an echo chamber. It may keep you dry when it's raining outside, but there is a price to pay. You have to give up conversation. I screamed at my tablemates deliberately once and not one dining guest looked up. They hadn't heard me! The solution is to go late when the crowd thins out and the kitchen is still open. AFTER the theatre, movie or concert. We had a 9:00 reservation and by 9:30, it became quite comfortable."

  • "Let me start off by saying all the food we ordered was very good. Now having said that, I wish there was more of it. The portions were very small, even for a tapas restaurant. We had a hard time hearing the waiter. The noise level was VERY LOUD!!! The waiter also had a heavy accent making it more difficult. We ended up ordering 8 dishes for 4 people. We decided to leave and go for a real dinner at Whitherspoon Grill because we didn't think we would ever get filled up on the food and we had headaches from the noise! I would go back for lunch with the ladies or just for appetizers before going to another restaurant and request to eat outside!"

  • "I think mistral is absolutely what Princeton is missing. Far from bar food and boring tradition faire this restaurants elevates food to what it should be. Chef Ben Nerenhausen successfully bridges familiar ingredients with some more rather unique ones to create the most interesting flavor profiles. If the chicken livers are on the menu, I encourage you to partake. My only disappointment came with dessert, where it all fell flat - Heavy and rather tasteless or too sweet. Hopefully next time I come round that will all since have changed."

  • "It was a different dining experience. I am not sure I would go there for dinner, but lunch was perfect. The portions are small so you need to order more than one entre. The food comes out at different times if you decide not to share with the other diners."
    Dined on 6/27/2014
  • "The cod dish was by far our favorite. Some of the other dishes (and we shared six), were very good but lacked an umph that the cod had. I would go again."
    Dined on 6/21/2014
  • "The menu is very unusual. The plates are small and designed to be shared so you get to try many things, but there is a limited menu. The amberjack sashimi had very small pieces of the fish, and the sweatbreads seemed to be missing from that dish. The carpaccio of beef and the buttermilk fried oysters were the best things we had. Skip the green salad as there are plenty of greens in the other dishes."

  • "all sorts of very different small plates... quite a unique tapas menu. Some things are highly misdescribed on the menu.... like a grilled veggie salad is really lettuce with some grilled beets and a few other root veggies. High quality food, with very good service. When we asked that they slow down the pace of dishes coming out of the kitchen they responded perfectly."

  • "This my 3rd time here. Haven't been disappointed yet. They use fresh ingredients and make creative dishes. Plates are small and they encourage sharing but of course you don't have to. Byob"

  • "Been to Mistral twice already and cannot wait to go back"

  • "While the actual food and ambience were lovely, the portion size was miniscule and very very very over priced. My two guests and I went directly to Naked Pizza and Thomas Sweet afterwards."
    Dined on 6/20/2014
  • "Small plates, good food, relaxed atmosphere. Mistral provides fine dining in a casual atmosphere in the heart of Princeton. BYOB keeps the cost down. Good for sharing with 2 or 3 people. Larger groups would only get a taste as portions are small. Dishes are served as they are cooked, no order."
    Dined on 6/18/2014
  • "Mistral makes no distinction between first courses and main courses and customers usually order 2-3 small courses, like tapas. Unfortunately, the staff does not seem to keep track of who orders what. The other day, my guest ordered three courses and I ordered two; all three of her courses were served before I got anything. It would improve things if they kept track of who orders what."

  • "My wife and I just had an evening at Mistral to celebrate our second wedding anniversary. The tapas style menu served up many delicious and eclectic choices, interesting takes on familiar dishes, and choices for folks with various dietary restrictions or concerns. The service was very good and there were nice touches from the kitchen when they found out that it was a celebration for us. I had expected just a touch more formality in the table settings, server attire, and general atmosphere based on what I have heard from others, but I have a hard time describing that as a weakness. Rather, once I adjusted to the environment as it was, I found the atmosphere to be quite nice and cohesive. Overall, great experience. I'm glad we came."

  • "This was the second time we've dined here and this occasion was Father's Day lunch. It's a bit harder sharing a small plate between 3 people than 2 so big groups would be a problem. Some plates are really, really small servings which makes it hard to divide. At almost 60 dollars for 3 people and not much food, it's easy to walk away hungry. Love the decor."

  • "I went to dinner with my sister for her birthday. The food was amazing . Small plates but was enough to satisfy our bellys. The staff was great very attentive and very nice. I will definetly go back."
