After nearly two decades of cooking at local institution Anchor Oyster Bar in San Francisco's Castro neighborhood, veteran seafood chef Freddy Gamez left his post as head chef to open his very own restaurant: Mission Street Oyster Bar. Situated in the vibrant Mission district, the inviting restaurant serves several varieties of oysters and generous portions of the freshest fare from the sea.   • "We went there on a whim after a quick search for an oyster bar. The menu was vague, but I was able to pull up photos on their website. We ordered the cioppino, oysters, and French fries. The cioppino and oysters were fresh and delicious, but I was disappointed with the fries. They were potato wedges, not bad, just not what I was expecting. Upon arrival we were seated right away. The service was good at first, but got slower as it got later and closer to closing time. We noticed that our waitress ran out the door to catch a bus while we were still eating. I didn't get my water filled until we were done, and it was difficult to track someone down for our bill. Perhaps they were having an off night, but I'd definitely go back for the food."

  • "Walking along the block I actually slipped right past this restaurant, looking at addresses I noticed it was 2 doors back. WOW it looks so rundown outside, Have I made a mistake? Inside however is a rather unique neighborhood gem.I was most impressed by the oyster half shell choices and was pleased at how good the special Ahi tuna meal was. I ordered a nice bottle of French Rose from the nice and reasonable thought not a great wine list. I would never have considered eating here if it were not on OpenTable and having discovered it I most certainly would eat here again. Free st. parking after 6PM."

The chef worked at a North Beach restaurant for 15 years and opened this eatery up. The seafood is very fresh and extremely well prepared. Their happy hour runs from noon until 5 where the oysters are a buck a piece. Can't be beat. I love this place."

We found this oyster heaven at Mission Street Oyster Bar & Seafood Restaurant. Our waitress with friendly and informative. She gave us an education about the different types of oyster, where they come from and what texture we would expect to taste. We were very satisfy and will definitely go back.   • "Food was great -- much better than expected. The shrimp on a skewer was perfectly cooked and seasoned. Crab salad was filled with fresh crab. This spot is in a shabby area and it looks like an ordinary Mission st restaurant -- nothing impressive with the simple decor. But everything we had was really good. Small but very nice wine by the glass selections. If you're a bit adventurous or in the area, this is a place to try for oysters or seafood."

  • "I went on a date here and arrived early in the evening on a Saturday. It was very quiet and the service was great. The menu had a good amount of choices, but wasn't too overwhelming. We had two different types of oysters, both very fresh and delicious."

  • "The oysters were amazing! Great menu. We loved everything we ate- oysters, crab cakes, garlic bread. One exception- The clam chowder- it was okay- not the best I have had. The service was a little slow- there weren't many people in the restaurant. So it was a bit odd that the service was slow. The wait staff was very friendly however. "

Must Order: Garlic Crab - fresh and juicy Oysters - lots of variety and always fresh. Cioppino - Full of delicious seafood, including the most tender fish pieces The owners here are genuinely nice and the prices are extremely reasonable for what you get!"

  • "The menu offerings and style is similar to Anchor Oysterbar in the Castro but you can make a reservation at Mission and even so they are seldom crowded. It's a slightly rougher but rapidly gentrifying part of town and an unassuming venue which keeps it a little undiscovered. Oyster crackers, good classic seafood and terrific garlic bread are all there. Haven't made the oyster happy hour but want to try it soon."

  • "I guess it would be unfair to compare this place to Anchor Oyster, but the chef/owner's claim-to-fame was working there for 20 years before opening this place, so I will say this cannot really compare: the overall ambiance of the place is odd (very modern-looking space and paint colors, tacky fish netting hanging up with sea shells and starfish hanging from them, and random paintings you would buy from Ikea). It's also very loud and echo-y. And there are at least 8-10 ceiling fans going, even at night when it's already chilly out to begin with. The service was good. Our waitress was attentive and friendly, so no complaints there. The food itself was just okay. Overall, I would not recommend this place to any of my friends."

It would have been nice to see a list of the various types of oysters as well, instead they rambled them all off. Ordered the Cioppino based on reading other reviews and I was not impressed, actually regretted it. Ambiance could have been better, the smell was a little off putting. Considering there are so many excellent seafood places in the area, I don't think i will go back."

  • "I'm glad to have a good seafood option in the Mission! And, I have to admit...we'd had a few beers before coming to dinner here. But, that didn't stop us from enjoying our meal (cioppino & garlic crab). The only complaint I had relates more to the fact that we chose to come here on Valentine's Day - everybody wants to be out this night & as a result service (slightly) and seating suffered. I'd definitely come here again, esp on a night that wasn't so popular."

  • "It was an off day - they were low on staff and service was horrendous (took roughly 45-50 mins to get just appetizers.. which were a dozen oysters and one cup of soup). They offered us a discount and apologized so that was good. I'd return again - food was good! :)"

It was the weekend after NYE so understandable. The bartender came to our take and took the order. I love the fact that ALL oysters are $2 all weekend and $1 at happy hour. Oysters were delicious, chowder was fantastic."

  • "Mission St Oyster Bar is a gem of a seafood place hidden inside a very pedestrian set-up. It doesn't look special from the outside -- a bit dark, hard to figure out from the street. The dining room is simple bare tables and chairs, like you'd see in a mid-range restaurant. The menu looks straightforward: salads, soups, calamari, oysters, seafood sandwiches, crab, shrimp etc. But the food is great. Super fresh seafood, skillfully prepared and served. We had fried and fresh oysters, and they were really great. No less than six fresh varieties to try that day. The fried oysters were simply dusted in cornmeal and then perfectly fried -- hot and juicy, not greasy. The garlic crab was fantastic -- well seasoned, super fresh. We'll be back."

  • "just the best meal i have had in san fran for a long time. the freshest fish i've had in a long time simmered in a tangy broth, the crispest yet juiciest oysters, a magnificent ceasar with a large portion of shrimp,clams,crab etc etc etc. i lost count. prices so reasonable, staff so congenial. this is my new "go to" restaurant in the city. cant say enough."

  • "I had some oysters, clam chowder and pasta with prawns; a split of French brut went well with it all. My friend had his favorite fish & chips and pronounced it among the best he's had, and he's a fussy eater. Our waitress was friendly and informative, even showing pictures of entrees on an IPad. We had eaten at the chef's previous restaurant, Anchor Seafood on Castro St., and found his new place even better. It's a storefront near Mission & 19th in a neighborhood that's evolving quickly and we hope others discover it soon."

My guess is that they need a few non-seafood killer apps to match their delicious oysters, crab and other seafood, salads, etc. Not everyone is a rabid oyster eater like many in my family. I hate to say this because finding a place with good oysters is so rare in San Francisco, where one would think good oysters would be commonplace. Also, no desserts."

  • "We got a dozen assorted oysters. Most of them were excellent. The crab sandwich was loaded with crab. The ambiance was bare bones, and it certainly was not cheap for a lunch (tab was $100 with the tip for two) Would recommend for local sea food that isn't chock full of annoying hipsters."
