Diner Reviews
  • "Food was good, but service was not that good. But it was very good as far as the buffet was concerned. We never had anyone come to our table unless they were collecting plates. We had to get up to asked for water, a spoon, OJ, Salt & Pepper & hot sauce all separate occasions. So it was pretty annoying."

  • "Because of the closing of the 2nd buffet (usually one on each floor), many reservations were pushed back to accommodate people who weren't able to climb stairs. My res was one of those, but I was ok with it as my brunch buddy is recovering from a hospital stay & they worked with us. The staff was courteous & apologetic which helped keep my "hanger" at bay (we waited 30-40min after our res). The food is standard brunch fair; bacon, eggs, carving station, etc., but there are also oysters, crabs, shrimp, and other goodies. As a gal used to bottomless brunches I was surprised only iced tea and coffee were included. For the price I've certainly had better brunches throughout DC, but the picturesque setting & good energy do make it worth the try."

  • "Our experience was NEARLY perfect, great food, great service and great ambiance. Our only complaint isn't something you can really fix unless you provide a special room for young children. We were seated next to a very energetic (read very loud) 2 year old and his equally loud mother. We should have requestd another table right away, but the restaurant was VERY crowded. The mother added to the commotion by loudly correcting her son. I am completely in favor of raising courteous kids, and don't believe in baby- talking them. However, this was neither the time nor the place for this lesson. Our experience was certainly affected by the noise. We will dine here again, but only with no kids in the room."

  • "We came for a birthday lunch celebration on a quiet Saturday in July, our first visit. The service was courteous and the food quite good but not extraordinary. The highly recommended jumbo lump crab cake, while fresh and tasty, was small and overpriced at $20, accompanied only by a drizzle of remoulade, some fries, and coleslaw. (The rainbow trout listed in the online lunch menu, which I had hoped to try, wasn't on the actual menu at all.) The chilled soup of the day was cantaloupe, sweet and a bit too like nectar for my taste. Still, the lovely old rooms and the garden view made for a charming atmosphere, my dining companions enjoyed their meals (particularly the gazpacho), and I might be tempted to give this place another try."

  • "The mussels were the most deliciously seasoned I have ever had, anywhere. My two dining companions and I came to Mrs. K's to celebrate the release of my colleague's book, and we could not have asked for a lovelier experience. Our waiter, Paul Joseph, was so gracious and helpful, and he even took the time to take photos of us down in the tea room by the Lutz glass exhibit so we'd have photos to commemorate the occasion."

  • "Love this place. Have been twice so far and the food and drinks have been amazing. The ambience is great; outdoor seating is beautiful and fairly quiet even with the patio setting. Great for dinner with a group of friends or a romantic night out :-) Next thing to try is their brunch! :-)"

  • "Went to Mrs. K's for an anniversary dinner and was sorely disappointed. The food was fair at best. Their signature crab cakes had no flavor, and the coleslaw tasted as if is was about to turn bad. Did not eat it. Also ordered a Rib-eye steak that was over cooked and looked like something you would be served at a Rustler's steakhouse."

  • "We had one person in a wheelchair because of a broken ankle, and the staff at Mrs. K's went out of their way to accommodate our needs. Both at entry and exit, a staff member opened the door and assisted us in getting the wheelchair in and out. They are also very welcoming and friendly throughout our brunch experience. They obviously have had great training, and enjoy their jobs."

  • "We were very disappointed with the quality of the food . We would always come especially for those melt in your mouth waffles. Something changed, the waffles were Cakey and thick and the cook made a lot of them at one time. Please go back to the way you used to do it."

  • "Whether it's a special occasion or a last-minute decision, I've never been disappointed. I prefer the wine cellar, but even when it is not available because of a party, I've gotten a lovely seat with a view of the garden or shown a table on the patio. The service, which is always good, was superb on this last visit. Paul, our waiter, was perfect. The crabcakes were delicious with barely any filler and the chef's special, crab stuffed shrimp on a bed of risotto, were wonderful."

  • "It was very nice...met a friend and we arrived early, so we had a great table with a nice view of the gardens. This has a lot of history and the place has been restored to a beautiful restaurant. I've been here many times and I never get tired of coming to my 'old' neighborhood to have a delightful and delicious lunch or dinner."

  • "The service was less than expected but the food made up for it. The bar was great and the service behind the bar was great. We waited too long for our salads then waited another 30 minutes for the meal. We had to ask a couple of times for a refresh of our drinks. The staff was very nice and polite."

  • "My first time there, for lunch, with a friend who has been there many times over the years. She says it can be hit or miss. The service was great. It was only our server's second day on the job, and she was excellent, as was the host, who constantly followed up. But we ordered a side of truffle fries, and they sent out a container of ends. We sent them back. We both ordered the Spring Chopped salad, and the bacon and artichoke hearts were missing. Attention to detail and presentation need improving. For the price we paid, I expect a little better. I will give them another shot, because I liked the menu, needs more exploring. Brunch looks interesting."

  • "I am glad the hostess noticed we were a couple and might want to be seated in a more quiet area. Thank you Also, the waitresses were kind to wish more a happy birthday and also marked my receipt with a nice birthday wish. Thank you again. Food was a little cold though. Will come back for sure."

  • "This place used to be great, but this time it suffered from poor service and high levels of noise. My girlfriend and I went for Sunday brunch. But it was loud enough that it could've been a World Cup soccer match inside the restaurant. Additionally, the omelette cooks were talking with each other loudly in Spanish. I felt as though I was bothering them by ordering an omelette. The waitress came to our table when she felt like it. And the food on the steam tables was not even hot in most cases. Ever all, not a great experience. Maybe, I'll sit outside next time. This would not be my last time here; however, it will be a while until I go back."

  • "I've been here before and they have an amazing brunch for the price and value! The mimosa carafes were a bit on the pricier side though! Great gardens and ample parking across the street."

  • "Mrs. Ks this is still a solid place for a nice dinner / quaint surroundings. The staff was exceedingly helpful & accomodating. The place is an old house and has lots of stairs so they opened up a room for us with easier access since once of our party was physically challenged. The good thing about us is that we (in our party) all share a taste of our food, so we get to try a few things.. The soups were excellent. The entree's were solid, and tasty, but nothing out of this world. Two of our party had the ribs, and they were smoky and flavorful, but not fall off the bone tender at all.. so a little tough. I orderd a fillet medium and it was a little toward the medium well side. The burger was OMG delicious, but heck it better be for $18."

  • "This is a lovely neighborhood restaurant that is world class. The menu selections are varied and robust; delicately flavored and perfectly balanced. The staff are quite accommodating, well-versed, and quite helpful. I cannot possibly recommend this enough."

  • "My husband and I went to Mrs. K's Tollhouse for brunch. Our reservation was at 10:30, and once we were seated, there was only one other couple in the room, which made for a quiet atmosphere. The food was quite good, with a nice variety of breakfast and lunch items, and the service was excellent. The restaurant itself is beautiful, with gardens outside and unique, antique-like decor inside. I highly recommend Mrs. K's for brunch!"

  • "Good Morning, I was looking forward to brunch on Sunday, 6/29, but did not enjoy at all, the bacon was greasy, omelettes were overcooked, grits were too buttery and the bread was hard since it is open with no cover on it. I understand drinks such as Mimosas, Bellini are not included however to charge $3 for lemonade was a bit much. The service was great very friendly and the atmosphere extremely beautiful, but as far as Sunday brunch I was not happy and spent way too much and I was hungry when I left."

  • "We ate here for our first date 41 years ago. My husband surprised me with a return visit on the eve of our 40th wedding anniversary. We had a wonderful meal. The food was exceptional as well as the service. Alex was our server and he could not have been nicer. He was so friendly and gracious."

  • "It's been 9 months since we held our wedding reception at Mrs K's. It was so good to return there for an evening getaway dinner while Nana was in town watching the kids. Service is always amazing and the gardens were just the view we needed to relax and enjoy the beautiful Washington weather."

  • "I chose Mrs K's for my last dining experience because it was a special occasion and I wanted ambiance. Hands down this is the most charming place in Silver Spring. I dined with two others and everything on the table was delicious! The tuna taco appetizer was most amazing. The truffle fries, ribs, oysters, fish of the day, steak...all served to perfection! A+ on service from the waitress and special treatment by the manager of the barrel bar. The reason I gave it only 4 stars out of five is because the jazzy music playing was absolutely awful. I noticed it when I first sat down and tried to block it out but it never got better. If they switched it up a bit (or even turned it down) they would get 5 stars from me. Would definitely go again!"

  • "Overall, we like this restaurant, but ONLY for dinner. We will avoid their Sunday brunch from now on. The last time we went to the brunch (5 years ago), they kept us waiting for 45 minutes after we'd checked in. Apparently, the person who took our names forgot to note that we were indeed present. Decided to give the brunch another chance, and were disappointed again. The main difficulties seem to be poor logistical planning/preparation on their part. Rookie mistakes, such as serving room temperature mimosas, and the cold eggs on top of the Eggs Benedict (due to no heat source underneath the trays on the buffet table) support my "unacceptable" rating of the Sunday brunch."

  • "I love pretty much everything about the place. It was a cozy, romantic, ambient place depending upon which area you were seated in. The food was amazing especially the waffles (I am not usually a fan of waffles). The brunch books up quick so you usually want to make a reservation a week ahead, if possible."

  • "I really want to thank Mrs. K's for accommodating our friend, Prof Dato, who is 89 years young and has to use a walker. I did not know this when I made the reservation, as I hadn't seen him for several months. But I did ask for a table which didn't require stair climbing, and when we arrived I was directed to a room with a ramp from the parking lot and no stairs. The food was excellent, and he shared lamb chops with his girl friend. My daughter enjoyed a Caesar salad and I, a chicken cordon bleu. The waitress was very patient while our guest made up his mind. Thanks again for a pleasant visit."

  • "I am from the area and as a child this place was a special treat. It maintained its charm and service. Took my 7 yr old great niece for a "ladies lunch" and the server was delightful in keeping her amused and happy, though she was being very shy. Food was good and the garden view we asked for is beautiful."

  • "While entertaining a Canadian visitor, I wanted a special restaurant for lunch--always Mrs K's in the past. (I remember the 4-course lunch/dinner that was remarkable.) We both ordered crab cake served with French fries & cole slaw. The latter was not freshly made & very salty so neither of us finished it. The rolls, as always, were delicious. Service from Christian was impeccable. Prices are high for the limited menu. The gardens are usually gorgeous but the roses had passed & petunias were the predominant flower. The experience was not as I hoped & remembered from the past so I don't know if I will return to Mrs. K's in the future."

  • "This place was very good. We arrived before it go crowded (5:15 Sunday afternoon) and were promptly seated. Food was very good and service was excellent. Bacon Mac and cheese and creamed spinach were my favorites."

  • "Mrs. K's was a great find - seemed very homely and quiet looking from the outside, but is beautiful on the inside. Almost has a 'speak easy' ambience to it in the basement. Definitely recommend."

  • "The service was so-so (our Waitress spent too much time telling us what she liked & didn't like on the menu); my wife's fish dish came too dry (which is hard to do with rockfish) and had sauce on it, which she asked to have put on the side; her follow-up order came out as requested and was good. We ate outside; the grounds and patio were pleasant (it was a bright & sunny Saturday). BTW, there is no separate brunch menu; it's the dinner menu or nothing."

  • "There were four if us for dinner and we had mixed reviews. One person ordered the ribs and said they were so tough he couldn't eat them. The fried oyster appetizer was very good but the potato spinach croquette lacked flavor. A good dipping sauce would have corrected this. I have been here several times and honestly believe the food is hit or miss. The waitress also was not really on the ball. She sold three of us on cream if crab soup only to find out they actually were serving Maryland crab soup. I did have the petite filet which was good although a little over cooked for medium but my baked potato was not thoroughly cooked."
