Great authentic German food with the feel of a Black Forest restaurant. Takes me back to my time in Germany. Been visiting Mirabell since the 80s. Food, service and atmosphere still just as great as my first visit. Sad that Chef Werner is no longer there to share a schnaps with. I will toast him on my next visit.

  • THE FOOD WAS EXCELLENT, HOWEVER,
    OpenTable Diner Since 2012

THE FOOD WAS EXCELLENT, HOWEVER, THE RESTAURANT WAS COLD AND WE ASKED TO HAVE ANOTHER TABLE. THE WAITRESS SAID SHE WOULD TURN UP THE HEAT WHICH SHE DID BUT IT DIDN'T LAST LONG UNTIL IT GOT COLD AGAIN! I WAS DISAPPOINTED THAT THERE WERE NO ROLLS OR BREAD WITH BUTTER. WE HAD ONE DRINK BUT THE WAITRESS NEVER CAME BACK TO ASK IF WE WANTED WINE WITH OUR DINNER. WE RECEIVED OUR BILL AND HAD THE LEFTOVERS PUT IN A CONTAINER, THEN THE LIGHTS IN THE OTHER ROOM WERE TURNED OFF BEFORE WE HAD A CHANCE TO PUT ON OUR COATS. YES, WE WERE THE LAST TO LEAVE BUT IT WASN'T A FRIENDLY GESTURE.

I don't have german food often and have only been to a a couple other German restaurant in the chicago area; however Mirabell has the best german food of the german restaurants I've been to. The sauerbrauten and spaetzle are fantastic. I've also had the veal schnitzl which was very nicely and lightly breaded and not greasy at all. Great selection of german biers. Very nice bartender when we were there. Our server was very new and barely spoke english (she was Romanian) , however she was pleasant , tried her best and did get the order correct.

Mirabell's offers German specialty dishes, as well as wine, imported & local craft beers, & Juiius Meinl coffee. There's a bar upon entry & 2 rooms to either side. One room has booths & tables amid murals of Germany. The other, larger room, good for groups, is decorated with flags, glass cases of figurines, & steins. Attentive staff ensured we were pleased with the items we ordered: liver dumpling soup, duckling, apple strudel, Black Forest cake, wine, beer, dessert liqueur & coffee. The owner chatted with us & my spouse was happy to find a small German flag atop his birthday dessert!

Overall, an ok dinner. There was confusion as to where to seat my party of 7, though I had made a reservation. Once seated, we waited approximately 20 minutes before water was poured and our waitress approached us. It was moderately busy, but it appeared that other tables were well into their meals, so our lack of service seemed strange. In fact, the other tables cleared out fairly quickly, and we were one of only a couple tables left, at 8pm on a Saturday. Food was good. I have been here previously and the food seemed to be better in the past. I don't have any huge issues with the place, but I have definitely had better service and a better overall time at other restaurants. I probably will not be returning here..

One of the best German restaurants left in Chicago. After going there numerous times over many years, we were surprised to find a simplified menu: from a multi-page menu down to a single page. The quality of the food did not change, but the selection was much less. Also, it appeared that the owners may be trying to turn this into a neighborhood sports bar because there were three large screen TVs in the main dining room with three sporting events on at all times.

Mirabel has always been our favorite spot for German cuisine. My wife is first gen German American and she, along with her parents, say the food is high quality and authentic to their native faire. The schnitzels are terrific as well as the pork dishes and goulash. You can't beat the cozy ambiance, especially during Oktoberfest, when Mirabel becomes the happiest restaurant in town! The owner is always there to greet you and really makes you feel appreciated.

I actually made the reservation for my wife and her friend. She enjoyed it and would like to go together next time. Her friend also wants to bring her husband who is German. You have a choice of the live music room or the quiet room. She brought me home some leftovers which seemed passable. The one thing I wish they had but they don't was the Frankfurt green sauce which I have not seen in Chicago.

This place was the "wurst." Seriously--our kids even hated it, and they're kids. It smelled bad, was totally dated, food was horrible, and the waitress was AWFUL. Went for my husband's b-day dinner with our 3 kids and his parents and we left all saying we'll never go back. Don't waste your night here if you want German food, go up to Lincoln Square.

I have been to Mirabell several times, and it never disappoints! Having been to several other of the authentic German restaurants in the city, I still feel prefer the food here the best. The beer selection is also a nice blend of authentic German beers, as well as some local Midwest craft brews. The interior is quaint with just the perfect touch of German flare, yet still feeling like it can be your local neighborhood hangout. All in all, a great dining experience!

I met with one of my mentors at this quaint German restaurant conveniently located right off the Addison exit of the Kennedy. Greeted right away by the barkeep and server, I was brought to a quiet corner table while I waited for him to arrive. Coffee was good, and kept coming, no need to ask for a refill. Server was super gracious in allowing us to talk and plan for about 45 minutes before we even looked at the menu; never felt pressured. We each ordered the Wurstplatte. I've eaten at a few German spots around the city and Mirabell gives them all a run for their money, even the noted Bierstube. The wurst was fantastic. The ambience welcoming, and not too noisy. Simply fantastic. P.S. I used to be a restaurant manager.

This is about the only really good German restaurant left in the city. The others are passable with OK food. Our food was REALLY very good. The sauces were very tasteful, and the portions were large, but not overly large. The servers were exceptionally friendly and right on top of everything. They were attentive without being pushy or hovering. We had a great time and will certainly return.

If you like authentic German food, Mirabell is a great place to eat. The restaurant is family owned, and has a homey feel. It's like sitting down in a home in Germany for a great meal. The layout is a bit cumbersome, and it the ambiance is not exactly appealing. However, Mirabell is not trying to be that kind of place. What they do, they do well. Everything from the soup to the appetizer, to the main dish was well done.

The menus for beer and food was enticing and we took our time to make our selections. There were so many options, that repeat visits are planned. The dinner menu included many wursts,as well as pork selections (some of which were unique in my experience), various schnitzles and other traditional dishes, Portions are very generous and soup selections are homemade. The service was friendly, attentive and had a "you're a guest in my house" feel.

Nice German restaurant and bar. A little tight for Mom's wheelchair, but we made it in. Schnitzel is the best I ever had! Spaetzle is very good too. Was amazed at the shrimp my niece ordered. Probably our favorite of the table. Two of us went home with quarts of the spicy goulash. Mmmmmm spicy good! Easy relaxing atmosphere. Not noisy, so we could hear each other talk. And comfortable service. Very efficient without being overbearing. Also loved the apple strudel ... but the black forest cherry cake was our favorite! Okay, and then there was their beers..... You have to try this place!

I had high expectations from the start. I have heard about this place many times so I had to take my daughter for her birthday. It was very good German food however the atmosphere was lifeless. Very quite. If you like silence and German food you are in the right place. Maybe because it was a Thursday evening on a winters cold Chicago night. The only entertainment we had was the couple a few tables away that had a small argument. The red cabbage had a bit too much cloves. Overall, good for German food not great on the ambiance.

Being that I'm of German descent, and miss my gram's good cooking. My husband and son absolutely loved it. Wish we would have come later to hear some good german music. The decor was wonderful, in the small dining room where we sat saw a old fashion Santa and hopefully I will be able to find one like that. I believe it's the german santa. My son loved the beautiful giant beer stein. We had bought my husband different steins over the years which he still has. I was looking for a german restaurant to bring our group to and hopefully they will enjoy has much as we did. Your waitress staff was very accomodating, friendly and a great sense of humor. Good German bread - complimentary. Wonderful appetizer. Wiener schnitzel-veal, tasty, but a little greasy. Large beer selection. Great attention to detail and service. Outstanding strudel. We don't remember how we heard about this place, maybe it was a Hungry Hound episode. Anyway, my husband chose it as the place he wanted to go for his birthday. I was surprised how small it is. Only one small dining room and the bar area. It was pretty quiet in the dining room, it was a Thursday evening, but the bar was noisy. The food was really good and plentiful. My husband managed to eat the whole thing and still had room to share a strudel. Our waitress was really nice, as was the hostess and busboy. We will definitely be back when I have my next craving for German food.
