A word from Mio Restaurant
Affectionately called the Embassy of Latin America in Washington, D.C., Mío has captured the hearts and palates of D.C.’s most influential Latin Americans and Washingtonians with a convivial table and “Cocina Abierta” (open kitchen) culture. Under the management and ownership of long time D.C. restaurateur, Manuel Iguina, and under Chef Roberto Hernandez seasoned expertise, Mío presents daily a unique menu from Latin America’s most influential cuisine capitals - a menu sophisticated in flavor yet true to its origins. In our kitchen all are welcome, the summers on the beach in the Caribbean, a Sunday parillada, the corner taquería, cevichería, lechonera and the arepera, all in one place. Just south of Thomas Circle, Mío also features modern American selections in a convivial atmosphere where customers are treated with Latin hospitality. Don't miss "Puerto Rico Fridays" - with a genuine roasted lechón and expanded Puerto Rican menu.

My fiance is from PR and he is a complete snob about food, especially those that claim to be authentic food from the homeland! This restaurant had him floored. We had the tableside mofongo, churrasco, and the pescado a la plancha. If this place weren't so far away, I'm sure we'd be regulars. The server was fantastic, although it was strange that they took our main course dishes and waited what seemed like FOREVER to come and offer us dessert, which we were really looking forward to. Even then, my fiance had to flag someone down to give us some dessert menus. They were really busy that night, but the service was so great up until then that I had to dock a half a star for that. We had the cuatro leches dessert which was a little cake-y for my taste, but still super delicious. I like my tres leches cakes to be soakinggggg in leches. I expected this cuatro leches to be a borderline soup with cake in it. 9.5/10 would eat again. Overall, I will definitely be coming back to try their other dishes! This is a perfect restaurant for fancy dates and special occasions, or any time we miss the tastes of Puerto Rico.

It's just excellent food and probably fare most Americans have never tried. I highly recommend the tableside mofongo. The lechon had a deliciously crispy skin though the meat was just a tad dry. Drinks were very good and the flan de queso dessert is otherworldly.

We sat in the bleachers which reminded my party of a rec hall from camp. The service was erratic at best. Our waiter was from Russia who had only been at the restaurant for two weeks; his food "expertise" was Japanese. A nice fellow but did not fully know the menu and wine list. The food was acceptable at best; no winners and generally disappointing as only 1 person of our foursome finished their meals. All of us agreed that we would not return.

My wife, who is Puerto Rican, thought the food was not very authentic, or good. I also wasn't too impressed with the tortilla soup, which tasted like tomatoe puree more than tortilla soup. The steak with steak fries was bland. We expected more flavor from this Latin restaurant. Great atmosphere with their open kitchen, but the food wasn't what we were expecting.

Mio has a traditional Puerto Rican menu with accomplished gourmet aspirations. The roasted suckling pig with rice and pigeon peas (a centerpiece of Puerto Rican Holiday cooking) was very tender and the seasoning made it the best pork dish I have had in the DC area. The yucca fritters stuffed with meat were perfect, but the "bolitas de mofongo" were more subtle (I expected a bolder, garlicky flavor). The plantain and veal "lasagna," topped with sweet tomato sauce in Mio's version, was good too. The server was friendly and made great recommendations. The "tembleque de coco" was the appropriate ending to a satisfying meal. But my favorite part: a well-done pisco sour. The place has a long bar and stylish lounge area I hope to visit soon.

The food was fantastic the drinks were amazingly well done. As a Puerto Rican I'll say the food was true to its roots and somehow they made it a lot less greasy than the traditional Latin fare. Incredible accomplishment honestly. However the staff left a lot to be desired. I have been to hundreds of establishments across the country and I have NEVER experienced such rude and angry staff. The host and our waiter were charmingly nice people but the other staff gave us rude looks and when my elderly mother asked to have her food boxed they told her to stop wasting their time. They ignored us for most of the night for bigger party tables and rudely slammed plates on our table. I have never ever expierenced anything like this.

Choose Mio for our anniversary night out. We were drawn to the variety of latin dishes from S. America and Caribbean countries. This was our first time at Mio, chosen because their stars/dollars ratio was great (and consistent). Our experience: Our waiter was attentive and informed. Excellent job by 2-3 efficient busboys. The meal was outstanding from end to end - the star dish was the incredibly delicious seafood stew. Milo was a memorable dining experience. THANK YOU!

For something different you must check out Mio. The flavors of Puerto Rico are underrated and worth the trip to Mio to learn that Latin Carribean cuisine is more than just Cuban. Savory spices and assorted roots accent seafood, steaks, and pork dishes, leaving your tastebuds dancing salsa routines. Owner Manuel is a gracious and generous host, and the servers are attentive and knowledgeable. Friday night is extra special, with a broader array of Puerto Rican specialties. Go for the Monfongo, made at your table, and you won't ask for guacamole again. Give you and yours a taste of Puerto Rico and you'll be back for more.

Our first visit. Exceptional food that reminds me of some of the great restaurants in Old San Juan. I ordered 3 small plates, octopus (fabulous), calamari (fabulous) and croquettes (good but will not order again). Or waitress was a delight. The only disappointment was the pace of service (slow) because our waitress was covering a lot of tables and the hostess stand. She should have received double pay for that evening (Oct 16).

Outstanding food! Service was outstanding too. Everything we had appetizer: we shared a mofongo cart! Loved the fresh taste of the chicharones crunch in the mofongo. Dinner: we shared the pork medallions w/guava red wine sauce. The mixture of the guava in the wine exquisit. It just had a touch of sweet which pairs nicely with the pork. The pork was rubbed with taste island oregano. Dessert: shared a flan highly recommended by our lovely waiter. Unfortunately I forgot her name. Everything she suggested was to perfection. The flan taste like a mixture of creme brûlée and Latin homemade flan. Doesn't taste or smell like eggs. The mojitos were super fresh mint! Went the next day for lunch unfortunately was closed on Saturdays for lunch.

The restaurant, the ambiance, the service, the character of MIO is unparalleled. Manuel and Karla plus family and now Chef Roberto Hernandez have taken MIO to a higher level. They have put Puerto Rican and Caribbean Latin food on the map in DC and the Northeast. MIO fares well and even better than some of the high profile restaurants in Puerto Rico. Chef Roberto Hernandez brought some roasted prok cracklings as an appetizers, delicious. The mofongo cart is a hit, a must try! I tried the breast of duck over malanga gnochis and was to die for. Everything, food, drinks, wine, was fabulous, including the 'Chichaito' pitcher for after dinner was great!

Mio's menu is Latin American with a special emphais on Puerto Rican. My wife and I shared the octopus appetizer (very good but could have used a bit more spice). I had the asopao shellfish stew which was outstanding (it comes with avocado and a couple tostones), and my wife had an excellent skirt steak daily special. Portions were very large, which precluded us having dessert. Another special, mainly on Fridays, is a portion of whole roasted pig, which looked good, too. Wine list is reasonable but not exciting, so we had two pisco cocktails and excellent draft beer. In a week of dining in DC, including many places with higher online review ratings than this, Mio was, in my view, our best meal and one of the cheapest.

I was introduced to this restaurant 2 weeks ago when a friend recommended we meet there for dinner. The atmosphere is vivrant and stylish and the Asopao de Marisco made me come back a few days later for lunch to savor another dish. My 25 year old daughter who joined me for lunch was equally in love with this restaurant. I've since been back for dinner with my boss for yet another great experience. The menu is comprised of lighter and more sophisticated versions of Latin favorites that are full of flavor.

I went with my husband for restaurant week and the experience was very pleasing. I ordered the skirt steak with root vegetable hash, it was cooked to perfection and was delicious. My husband ordered from the regular menu, ordered the fish of the day which was swordfish. The fish was slightly undercooked to his taste, but server quickly returned it to the kitchen and it was diligently corrected. The swordfish was delicious too. For dessert, we ordered the guava and cream cheese empanada, and it was out of this world amazing! I would definitively come back again. Although the restaurant is a little pricy, it is worth every penny.
