A word from Minetta Tavern
Minetta Tavern was opened in Greenwich Village in 1937. The Tavern was named after the Minetta Brook, which ran southwest from 23rd Street to the Hudson River.

Over the course of its long history, the Tavern was frequented by various layabouts and hangers-on including Ernest Hemingway, Ezra Pound, Eugene O'Neill, E. E. Cummings, Dylan Thomas, and Joe Gould, as well as by various writers, poets, and pugilists.

Since its renovation, Minetta Tavern has best been described as "Parisian steakhouse meets classic New York City tavern."

We hope — and believe — that's a somewhat accurate description of the place.

Diner Reviews
  • "Seems Minetta feels the buger is so good that they don't need professional servers, a friendly hostess, comfortable seating or well trained bus boys. We were a party of 5 crammed into a table for 4 that was placed on an angle so my chair was bumped by every bus boy that passed by. The service on the whole was sub par. Plates were placed on our table with a crash with the perfunctory pause as the bus boy waited for us to make room for our plates. The hostess was among the rudest I have experienced. She is the first impression and should be trained to be welcoming and friendly. The burger is divine as is the cote de boeuf, however, not good enough to make the trip down to the west village, deal with the bullish servers and pay $700."

  • "Excellent combination of well executed food with superb, yet not obtrusive service in a classic setting. The collective rave about the black label burger and the bone marrow were on point, and the wine list to match the rest of the offerings was simply poetic."

  • "Delicious food, really tasty steak... I was super tired and it would have been easy not to have a good time... Also the burger is really amazing (I had gone another time and had the burger)"

  • "Dissapointing experience, bad waitress who did not care to offer Mineta's best. Careless, practically threw out menu and plates. Would not recommend or repeat. Aged burger was ok, nothing superb."

  • "Best burger in the city / ever! Bloody Mary is also amazing, fries are on point. Service is fantastic."

  • "The serve was friendly and efficient. The food, the cote de beouf, anna potatoes and souffle were all delicious. The one minor error in service was made up for in a friendly and nice way."

  • "We went here in search of the best burger. It was just okay. Corner Bistro is far better."

  • "I've been here a few times and everytime it is a solid meal. Can't go wrong with the Black Label Burger and pre-ordering the Chocolate Soufflé (which is what we did this time around), but I've had the steaks and tons of other stuff on the menu, and they are all good. Highly recommend. Also, enjoy the historic aspect of the restaurant."

  • "I can only speak for the burger, which is the best burger I've ever had. Some how it really is that good. Believe the hype"

  • "Due to difficulty getting a reservation thought this was a foodies find. Turned out 80% order burgers... for good reason, other food is just not that good."

  • "You know it. The black label burger is where it's at. I recommended it and the Rum Diplomatico (for dessert) to a guy from Seattle who was sitting next to me, and he left saying "I am so glad I met you.""

  • "Dinner at the Minetta Tavern was superb. The burgers were excellent. Perfectly cooked and great tasting. My wife loved the mussels, just like the ones we have in France. Nice wine selection too. Service was super, the waiter was as nice as you can be. I'll will be returning again soon."

  • "I've wanted to dine here for a while and my wife's and my anniversary was my excuse. While expensive, the experiences was worth it. We had several of the specials, as well the Bone-In New York Strip. Everything was perfectly preparred, the manager helped us select the perfect wine and the taste of everthing was great. Atmosphere is great fun, reminding of a New York long past."

  • "We had the black label burgers and the bone marrow appetizer - both were excellent. This was our first time here, although we've heard a lot of great things about Minetta Tavern. Everything everyone said was true - professional staff, good burgers."

  • "Everyone has heard of the infamous Black Label burger at Minetta Tavern and it's $28 price tag. I thought "Best Burger" was going to be a hard name to live up to and was prepared to be underwhelmed but boy was I surprised! It is an amazing burger and all four of us at the dinner table ordered it as it. It wasn't greasy and amazingly tendered when prepared medium rare. Everything was a perfect match - from the buns to the caramelized onions. We all devoured our burgers in record time and this was not a small burger! So amazing, I'm going back for another one week later!"

  • "The wait staff is terrific, and can guide you through the relatively limited menu choices. They have delicious oysters on the half shell, plain, but you have to request them as they are not listed on the menu except when served with sausages and small crepes. The highlight of the menu is the Blue Label burger, which is among the best hamburgers I have ever had anywhere."

  • "Loved Minnetta Tavern. A surprise for my boyfriend's birthday (his favorite restaurant) and had a great evening with amazing food and wine."

  • "Went to try the Black Label burger which was cooked perfectly. The real gem of the night was the Grand Marnier souffle, light and perfectly executed. A desert worth the trip to try."

  • "Minetta Tavern pretty much lives up to its hype. The cocktails and wine by the glass choices are great and the food varies from good to very good, but not rave quality. Even the Black Label "best burger ever" isn't, but the fries are. We would come more often if getting a reservation weren't so difficult, so it's only a few times a year for us."

  • "The food is excellent (there's nothing more to be said about the Black Label burger--maybe the best on the planet) and the ambience is great. I love the classic feel of this place. Servers are always lovely and attentive. However, it's very small, very loud and very pricey for what you get. Expect to be jammed into a small table and yelling to be heard over the din. All-in-all, it's still a nice experience with wonderful food, but the price, noise and seating leave something to be desired. 3.5 stars."

  • "My second visit to Minetta Tavern was satisfactory and enjoyable. The decor and ambiance is classy, but comfortable and inviting. The food is tasty, well prepared, and served with warmth and kindness."

  • "I go here once a year for that Black Label burger that's $26.....worth it. Really good. It makes me laugh that lunch for two can run to $100 in a funky old place in the village. It is really fun, fabulous, historic location, great food and excellent service. Why not?"

  • "Second time there and certainly not the last. Small but energetic bar. Great food with cool, energetic room. We were seated 10-15 minutes after our reservation and got an unexpected free dessert. Can't wait to return."

  • "Delicious food. Had the black label burger and although it was very expensive for a burgery, it was worth it. Tasted amazing."

  • "Best Bone Marrow appetizer - EVER! Extra fresh, well-seasoned marrow was the best part of my meal. This place is popular with tourists and locals."

  • "I have eaten at Minetta Tavern many times before. The Black Label Burger is always the best! The souffle was excellent, as were the cocktails. Our waiter could not have been nicer or more attentive."

  • "We went here a couple of months ago. This place is a neighborhood gem. A lot of history to this area. But then again, I can say that's most of New York The food was good but the vibe of this place is excellent. We tried their famous black burger and the potatoe dish. Well presented. A must visit."

  • "We had a reservation at Minetta for one o'clock. I thought this would be lunch but in fact they were still serving brunch. The food we had was delicious and the service very good. As usual nowadays, the tables were packed in and we were practically sitting with the people on either side of us. Altogether a very nice experience."

  • "So often you hear of a restaurant that has all the "buzz", all the media, and all the so-called experts squealing with joy about how this is "THE SPOT!" You find yourself scratching your head as to what all fuss is about. Well, Minetta Tavern is everything a diehard restaurant going veteran could ask for. The food was excellent. The staff welcoming and knowledgable. The well worn and adorned space space screamed you are in a New York Icon. The great question of the evening, is the $28 Black Label Burger worth the money? A resounding, Yes! But our Halibut with morels and creamed corn was fabulous too. Thank you for living up to your reputation."

  • "An old world classic. tables are very close together, even for NYC, so be prepared to get to know your neighboring tables. The place is very noisy by any standards, so if that bothers you move on. Food is very solid, some wow, some very good. I would go back."

  • "Better steak than in Peter Lueger. Black Label burger is still unbeatable"

  • "As most people, I'm skeptical of all of the hype surrounding certain famous restaurants. Minetta Tavern did not disappoint. The Black Label Burger was argubably the best burger I've ever head. It was worth every penny of the $28 the restaurant charges for it."

  • "The food, service, and atmosphere are always great at Minetta Tavern. We've been here several times and most recently with our family for Father's Day brunch. The special omelette, their eggs Benedict serves on latkes and the delicious baked goods were a few of our wonderful meals. The service is always great!!"

  • "My daughters and I enjoyed lunch at the Minetta tavern this week. We ordered the famous burger which they graciously cut into thirds, the bone marrow, the pasta And spinach. We also indulged in some delicious rhubarb cocktails. Every little Thing was delicious and the service was so good. We did wish we had our Dad/ husband with us to Polish off the leftovers!"

  • "Went before a show at the Bowery Ballroom. The oyster and sausage appetizer was very good and enough for two (2 sausage meatballs, 4 oysters). I got the special, hake wrapped in prosciutto with english peas, carrots and greens which was excellent. Based on reviews my wife went with the burger. While good I would order something else. The chocolate souffle was definitely for 2. The strip steak also looked very good."

  • "The environment alone is worth the trip. Every detail of the decor exemplifies the history of the place. The food is outstanding. the attention to detail was perfect. the Bone marrow was seasoned to perfection with a caramelized onion relish to die for. The fresh asparagus salad was remarkably creative and delish. The Burger was well worth the money. The quality and taste was beyond any burger I have ever had.It is really a special place. American fare at its best."

  • "My husband and I finally caved and came to try the famous Black Label burger. We split that, plus the marrow appetizer and the salt cod. The food was fantastic. My husband had a cocktail that was incredibly complex and delicious, and I enjoyed a great wine on the recommendation of our waiter. We didn't have time for dessert, but the table next to us had a chocolate souffle, and the smell was intoxicating. The burger really is that good. It's got a good crust on the outside from the salt and searing, and somehow the meat tastes even better on the last bite. The marrow appetizer was fantastic as well...subtle and rich. It is tight seating, so it's best suited to intimate occasions, but I'd go back in a heartbeat."
