A word from Minetta Tavern
Minetta Tavern was opened in Greenwich Village in 1937. The Tavern was named after the Minetta Brook, which ran southwest from 23rd Street to the Hudson River.

Over the course of its long history, the Tavern was frequented by various layabouts and hangers-on including Ernest Hemingway, Ezra Pound, Eugene O'Neill, E. E. Cummings, Dylan Thomas, and Joe Gould, as well as by various writers, poets, and pugilists.

Since its renovation, Minetta Tavern has best been described as "Parisian steakhouse meets classic New York City tavern."

We hope — and believe — that's a somewhat accurate description of the place.

Diner Reviews
  • "I came here with my BF for our anniversary. Dimmed lighting with a red overtone set the mood for a romantic evening. My BF ordered the Copperhead, a very well balanced, smooth cocktail that tasted of oranges, cherries and whiskey. For our appetizer, we ordered the Veal Carpaccio. I have had a lot of beef carpaccio, but this was my first veal carpaccio. I must say the taste is a lot lighter than beef and was well complimented by the shaved truffle, artichoke, and reggiano cheese. We then ordered the Cote de Boeuf. It came out cooked to perfection, and each section of the steak tasted different and delicious. It almost melted in your mouth. Pair that with the Champignons, Pommes Anna and bone marrow, Perfection!"

  • "My fiance and I enjoy Minetta Tavern especially because of the notable service and quality of dishes. We can't wait to return again!"

  • "Cramped seating. Should have taken a clue from most of the other tables and had the burger. When I spend that much for beef it should be the best I ever I ate. it wasn't."

  • "Pros: - great atmosphere - old NY feel - friendly staff - decent food Negative: - waitress not very attentive - other patrons were loud and making terrible remarks"

  • "we went at minetta tavern on a sunday night in early august. it's a very glamorous place. we ate a very good steak and an excellent burger but the french fries were a bit too dry and crispy. the service was very good."

  • "I love Minetta Tavern for late nights in New York. We went at 10.30pm on friday night and the place was packed and buzzing. However, there is nothing vegetarian on the menu which is a real shame. They do modify dishes for veggies (e.g. we had the pasta without bacon) but its still quite restrictive and you end up with something kind of mediocre. Still, if you're arriving late its a great place to go."

  • "The Black Label burger is a piece of heaven. And, we also had one of their specials, A Grand Marnier soufflé. It was in the top five desserts I've ever had. It's out of this world fantastic."

  • "We went to Minetta the same reason everyone else does- the black label burger. But let's start with the drinks: we ordered a couple each, they were fantastic! Then we ordered an app from the daily menu, tomato gazpacho. Nothing special, light fresh tomatoes in tomato water. Then came the entrees: we split the burger and the pasta za za. The waiter had each entree split for us, the pasta in separate bowls each with it's own egg! So thoughtful! The pasta was incredible! So decadent and rich and flavorful! Definitely my favorite dish of the night! The burger was just good- I didn't see what all the hype was about. The bun was a little soggy, the patty thick and cooked well. The shoe string fries that come with the burger were very good."

  • "Really liked the location and atmosphere. Very cool building and history. However, we were put at a booth in the very back that we could hardly get into because of another large round table in front of us. There were only four of us, but the experience was rushed and busy and not very comfortable. If I return, it would be just to have a drink and appetizer maybe unless we could specify a table. Noise level very high."

  • "This restaurant did not perform up to its billing. While service was good for a pre-theater dinner, and the decor is wonderful with it's 'old time' neighborhood maps, photos and murals, the food was fair to good. The marrow appetizer was unique and excellent, and the trout entree was well-prepared and recommended. However, the 'Black Label Burger', which some say is the entree to order, arrived undercooked - rare, rather than medium - and tasted rather ordinary - though at $28, it should have been anything but that. That said, it's a very popular restaurant, on a wonderful street in the Village, and thus a place that should be visited at least once."

  • "I ordered the wrong thing , a bone in NY STRIP $59.00, It was tough fatty & gristly . I then noticed every body else seem to be eating burgers which I understand is the hot item at the tavern . If i decide to go again that is what I will stick with. The rest of the food & the place was good. My friend got the Trout stuffed with crab and she said it was ok."

  • "Great food. Cool vibe. Wine list practically forces you to abstain, as there isn't a single reasonably priced bottle."

  • "Ordered their famous Black Label Burger medium despite being told that they recommend medium rare. Burger I received wasn't even medium rare, but barely rare (middle portion just ground meat). After I sent it back it was okay--quality meat and the onion topic was fine, but nothing to rave about. I've had prime burgers as good at many other places for less money. While waitress was nice, another server took away bottle of water from my table mid-way through dessert (and I needed it since coconut cake was very dried out, not moist at all). I know it was early Saturday night, but I wasn't dawdling (ordered dessert without taking any time, waited 10 minutes with my credit card out before receiving bill). Bot bum's rush-won't be back."

  • "Great thick bacon! We had a group of 6 and everyone enjoyed their meal. Best french fries we had during our entire trip. Most of us ordered the Burger and were so glad to get a med rare burger. Warning - it is really med rare. So good if you are not afraid. One person had a brunch type item and another had the pasta - yum!"

  • "Went there for the BLB. Wasn't the best burger I've ever had, but it didn't disappoint. They sat us in the font near the bar. They way undercooked my Mom's burger but were happy to take back and amend. Pretty cool decor on the walls."

  • "Easily one of the most consumable burgers in NYC. Go Black Label."

  • "is how close the tables are. If you take a date here, or any party of two, the tables have about an inch on each side so there is zero privacy/intimacy. But the food and service are both quite good - we left quite full and happy after having the Dry Aged Côte de Boeuf."

  • "The Black Label Burgers we received were small and nothing special. You might as well have their regular cheeseburger for a fraction of the price. Pommes frites were simply frozen french fries served cold and covered with salt. Unless you were ordering constantly from the bar service as unattentive and lacking. The bone marrow appetizer we went to get was not available. Not sure I would even return to this restaurant"

  • "Great burger, other wise over priced limited menu. Really not worth the hype. We had a 2:30 reservation and because our 11 am train from Philadelphia was delayed, we tried to cancel via open table and was told that you had to have cancelled by 10:30 that day and so was unable to do so. Tried calling, no one answers the phone, only possible to leave a voice mail. Got to NY at 1:15 checked into hotel and made the reservation within a 5 minute window only to be disappointed. Travel to NY a lot, eat at a lot of good restaurants, this one never again."

  • "Seems Minetta feels the buger is so good that they don't need professional servers, a friendly hostess, comfortable seating or well trained bus boys. We were a party of 5 crammed into a table for 4 that was placed on an angle so my chair was bumped by every bus boy that passed by. The service on the whole was sub par. Plates were placed on our table with a crash with the perfunctory pause as the bus boy waited for us to make room for our plates. The hostess was among the rudest I have experienced. She is the first impression and should be trained to be welcoming and friendly. The burger is divine as is the cote de boeuf, however, not good enough to make the trip down to the west village, deal with the bullish servers and pay $700."

  • "Excellent combination of well executed food with superb, yet not obtrusive service in a classic setting. The collective rave about the black label burger and the bone marrow were on point, and the wine list to match the rest of the offerings was simply poetic."

  • "Delicious food, really tasty steak... I was super tired and it would have been easy not to have a good time... Also the burger is really amazing (I had gone another time and had the burger)"

  • "Dissapointing experience, bad waitress who did not care to offer Mineta's best. Careless, practically threw out menu and plates. Would not recommend or repeat. Aged burger was ok, nothing superb."

  • "I've been here a few times and everytime it is a solid meal. Can't go wrong with the Black Label Burger and pre-ordering the Chocolate Soufflé (which is what we did this time around), but I've had the steaks and tons of other stuff on the menu, and they are all good. Highly recommend. Also, enjoy the historic aspect of the restaurant."

  • "I ordered medium well done and my husband ordered medium, but mine was not cooked as his and I asked them to cook it more. Their service is very good and friendly. Unfortunately, my second dish was fully well done and I feel a bit disappointed. My hubby is meat lover so he loves that place, I'm more vegies lover, so it's not the best burger for me. However the caramelized onion with burger was amazing! I still remember their kindness and ambience."

  • "I can only speak for the burger, which is the best burger I've ever had. Some how it really is that good. Believe the hype"

  • "You know it. The black label burger is where it's at. I recommended it and the Rum Diplomatico (for dessert) to a guy from Seattle who was sitting next to me, and he left saying "I am so glad I met you.""

  • "Dinner at the Minetta Tavern was superb. The burgers were excellent. Perfectly cooked and great tasting. My wife loved the mussels, just like the ones we have in France. Nice wine selection too. Service was super, the waiter was as nice as you can be. I'll will be returning again soon."

  • "I've wanted to dine here for a while and my wife's and my anniversary was my excuse. While expensive, the experiences was worth it. We had several of the specials, as well the Bone-In New York Strip. Everything was perfectly preparred, the manager helped us select the perfect wine and the taste of everthing was great. Atmosphere is great fun, reminding of a New York long past."

  • "We had the black label burgers and the bone marrow appetizer - both were excellent. This was our first time here, although we've heard a lot of great things about Minetta Tavern. Everything everyone said was true - professional staff, good burgers."

  • "Everyone has heard of the infamous Black Label burger at Minetta Tavern and it's $28 price tag. I thought "Best Burger" was going to be a hard name to live up to and was prepared to be underwhelmed but boy was I surprised! It is an amazing burger and all four of us at the dinner table ordered it as it. It wasn't greasy and amazingly tendered when prepared medium rare. Everything was a perfect match - from the buns to the caramelized onions. We all devoured our burgers in record time and this was not a small burger! So amazing, I'm going back for another one week later!"
