Getting there

  • Public Transit: Take the A,B,C,D,E,F or M train to West 4th St. Use the 3rd St. exit and walk one block south to Minetta Lane and 2 blocks east to MacDougal St.

    Take the 1 train to Christopher St/Sheridan Square and walk south (toward Grove St) on West 4th, 4 blocks. Continue south on 6th Ave 2 blocks to Minetta Lane, and 2 blocks east to MacDougal St.

A word from Minetta Tavern
Minetta Tavern was opened in Greenwich Village in 1937. The Tavern was named after the Minetta Brook, which ran southwest from 23rd Street to the Hudson River.

Over the course of its long history, the Tavern was frequented by various layabouts and hangers-on including Ernest Hemingway, Ezra Pound, Eugene O'Neill, E. E. Cummings, Dylan Thomas, and Joe Gould, as well as by various writers, poets, and pugilists.

Since its renovation, Minetta Tavern has best been described as "Parisian steakhouse meets classic New York City tavern."

We hope — and believe — that's a somewhat accurate description of the place.

Even the Black Label "best burger ever" isn't, but the fries are. We would come more often if getting a reservation weren't so difficult, so it's only a few times a year for us."

  • "The food is excellent (there's nothing more to be said about the Black Label burger--maybe the best on the planet) and the ambience is great. I love the classic feel of this place. Servers are always lovely and attentive. However, it's very small, very loud and very pricey for what you get. Expect to be jammed into a small table and yelling to be heard over the din. All-in-all, it's still a nice experience with wonderful food, but the price, noise and seating leave something to be desired. 3.5 stars."

You find yourself scratching your head as to what all fuss is about. Well, Minetta Tavern is everything a diehard restaurant going veteran could ask for. The food was excellent. The staff welcoming and knowledgable. The well worn and adorned space space screamed you are in a New York Icon. The great question of the evening, is the $28 Black Label Burger worth the money? A resounding, Yes! But our Halibut with morels and creamed corn was fabulous too. Thank you for living up to your reputation."

The special omelette, their eggs Benedict serves on latkes and the delicious baked goods were a few of our wonderful meals. The service is always great!!"

We also indulged in some delicious rhubarb cocktails. Every little Thing was delicious and the service was so good. We did wish we had our Dad/ husband with us to Polish off the leftovers!"

  • "Went before a show at the Bowery Ballroom. The oyster and sausage appetizer was very good and enough for two (2 sausage meatballs, 4 oysters). I got the special, hake wrapped in prosciutto with english peas, carrots and greens which was excellent. Based on reviews my wife went with the burger. While good I would order something else. The chocolate souffle was definitely for 2. The strip steak also looked very good."

  • "My husband and I finally caved and came to try the famous Black Label burger. We split that, plus the marrow appetizer and the salt cod. The food was fantastic. My husband had a cocktail that was incredibly complex and delicious, and I enjoyed a great wine on the recommendation of our waiter. We didn't have time for dessert, but the table next to us had a chocolate souffle, and the smell was intoxicating. The burger really is that good. It's got a good crust on the outside from the salt and searing, and somehow the meat tastes even better on the last bite. The marrow appetizer was fantastic as well...subtle and rich. It is tight seating, so it's best suited to intimate occasions, but I'd go back in a heartbeat."

The food is outstanding. the attention to detail was perfect. the Bone marrow was seasoned to perfection with a caramelized onion relish to die for. I am by no means saying that the steak and lamb was bad, but it was about as good as you would expect from a place selling $20 steaks. If you are going to be selling high priced steaks, it should be at the same quality as other high end steak houses in the city. It was not, and therefore I feel this place is simply not a good value. "

  • "We came here for the black label burger. At $28, it should have been amazing. It was a good burger but not great. It lacked seasoning. A little salt would have gone a long way but they don't even put that on the table. The brioche French toast was amazing! It was rich, creamy, and the orange zest put it over the top. This is an old school NYC restaurant that's worth a visit. Just manage expectations when ordering the burger. "

  • "The Minetta Burger, to my experience, has been the BEST BURGER in NYC. It makes Boulud's overindulgent burger and passing fancy. This place has so much character, and wonderful service and outstanding food and drink. You enter and are transported into an earlier time when food was actually good. Cannot speak highly enough and will be returning as quickly as possible. I judge a restaurant that I truly love by how much I want to just "live" there because of the ambience, etc. This is really high up there in my estimation."

  • "First visit to Minetta, but we'd seen several segments on FoodNetwork featuring the restaurant and their Black Label Burger. It's expensive; but turned out to be worth every penny! Ate there with 3 guy friends. We all had the burger and there was nothing but praise around the table. The rest of Minetta's menu looks really awesome so we can't wait to go back and sample some of the other dishes. Last comment; you need to be in the mood for tight seating and a somewhat "boisterous" atmosphere. Lot's of conversation and laughter all around you make for a fairly noisy environment, but it didn't detract from our overall enjoyment. Highly recommended!"

  • "The food is always spectacular at Minetta Tavern and normally the service is always attentive and pleasant. I recently have my first 'poor' service experience at Minetta Tavern, when my guest asked for an extra napkin after having enjoyed the black label burger (which I strongly suggest you try). She was meet with a look for annoyance and flat disgust by the young waitress with glasses whose facial expression looked as through my guest had spouted a vulgarity at her. I was shocked because this is not what Minetta Tavern is about. It is one of the most pleasant and well managed restaurants I enjoy eating at. I was surprised by this experience but will give this restaurant another try."

  • "I was so looking forward to this dinner, but left terribly disappointed: restaurant noise-level like a baseball stadium & you are packed like sardines. On the banquette, no exaggeration, only 4 inches bet the tables - if you have to get up, people on either side of your table have to move as well. Ambiance of plane economy section. Appetizers were good, bone marrow and beet salad, but the entrees, lamb and beef, were diner-level in quality & taste. Both pieces of meat far too fatty, over-cooked, under-seasoned. Only 70% of portion edible, rest was bone and fat. The saving grace were service, very attentive, and their wine list. But not even a good bottle of bordeaux given free would induce me to go back. For 2 people, a waste of $300."
