A word from Minami Restaurant
Located in the vibrant neighborhood of Yaletown, Minami Restaurant delivers one of the most unique and innovative dining experiences to Vancouver. Minami follows the pioneering footsteps of sister restaurant, Miku for introducing the Aburi style or flame seared technique to Vancouver’s thriving sushi scene in 2008. Aburi sushi requires no soy sauce or wasabi, as the chefs create specialty sauces using non-traditional Japanese ingredients to complement the flavor properties of each variety of fish.

From the kitchen, seasonal and regional ingredients are integrated into dishes to reflect the diversity of responsible food choices. Traditionally trained Japanese chefs are inspired by global flavors and cutting edge techniques to create a new style of cuisine. The culinary approach evokes passion and beauty, as each dish is artfully plated on custom-designed Arita Yaki plate ware, handpicked by owner, Seigo Nakamura.

This is my second time going to Minami. I would give it a 5 out of 5. The food is really good and the service and friendliness of staff is 5 out of 5. The only thing that I wasn't happy about during both visits is that the food comes out very slow. The kitchen needs to step it up just a tad. Otherwise, very good experience.

Minami is our favourite fine dining Japanese restaurant but this was our first time to try the Omakase menu. It was outstanding and the menu team of chefs prepared for us was out of this world. We brought special friends we wanted to honour as we each celebrated our 20th wedding anniversaries. The service was outstanding and there was no doubt the royal treatment made us feel like VIP - like the only guest despite a very busy restaurant on a Friday night. Everything was perfect to the finest detail. The omakase dinner takes some planning (a form to submit stating your allergies/preferences 72 hours in advance) but is a good investment of your time and $ for special occasions. Highly recommend Minami and also their omakase.

I have been to minami several times now to be able to say its probably one of the best japanese restaurants in vancouver. Granted, the price range isnt for everyone, it is not outrageous at all! The quality is good - fresh ingredients, seasoned perfectly, original combination of flavours... having said all this, this is not your "traditional sushi restaurant". Then again, minami is what you expect to see in tokyo, a bit of a fusion twist on aburi style sushi. All in all, if you are open minded and love japanese flavours you will love this. But if you are california roll tempura teriyaki combo seeking vancouverites, this is not for you. Ps, you will crave their saba aburi!!

  • Great food, Terrible Service

The food was good. Pretty, well garnished, and tasted great. The service however was terrible. I've had better service at Denny's. We had to wait for our server several times to get drinks/order more food. We are the type who like to order as we go, and this place just did not suit that kind of style. The décor and atmosphere bordered on romantic, but unfortunately for us the screaming baby behind us kind of ruined that. I would go again possibly, but this time on a week night where I would hope they are less busy and therefore could be more attentive.

I've been to the sister restaurant Miku and this is definitely on par. The atmosphere is more casual and I enjoyed it. The food arrived promptly. I had the Minami tasting menu. Good mix of sushi and inspired cuisine. We had a trainee as part of a pair of servers. My friends tried the plum wine flight and it was equally delicious.

You can definitely find better valued sushi in Vancouver and its surrounding areas. However I took a customer that is from Toronto and he was very impressed. It may be that we are spoiled in Vancouver with so many great options but they are used to paying equally as much for way less quality. The atmosphere elevated the experience and their signature dishes are worth going for (Aburi Oshi Sushi, Red Wave Roll, Crunchy Scallop Roll) Everything was super fresh, great service and the BC Spot Prawn Sashimi put it over the top.

Minami's is Vancouver's top Sushi bar. They have brought the latest sushi craze from Japan which involves using sushi molds with fish in the middle as well as the topped with fish. Then they use a secret mayo based sauce ove the top of the molded sushi and then using a charcol stick and torch they torch the charcol flavor into the sushi and carmelized the sauce - Delicious. I only gave it a 3 because we were seated at the kitchen bar and it was uncomfortably hot so it was difficult to really focus on the food and drink and the heat made the ambience undesireable.

We've been to Minami a few times now; the first for the Omakase, the second for an evening bite, and this time for an early brunch. We didn't review the second experience, which was pretty mediocre (Kale Goma-ae 3.5/5, Salmon Oshi Bites 3.75/5), but the brunch was probably the best of our lives. We had the Hatcho Miso Pork Belly Eggs Benny and the Weekend Zen, the content of which I don't remember but the quality of which I will not question. Everything was fantastic except the Ebi Fritter, which I find has too thick of a batter, thought my fiance loves it. We sat on the patio, which was nice and breezy but not too cold. The service was neutral; nothing special but no negative impact on the experience.

Went early before reservation to have drinks. Just because waiter's shift ended, we had to settle our bill instead carrying it into our dinner. Was not impressed. Ordered the Omakase with Sake pairing. For the price ( about $225 per person), food was not better than other restaurants that offered the same. The special menu lacked full descriptions of what we were eating....usually get an in depth explanation of where sake or food originated or how it was made etc.(last tine I came it was great and I only ordered the $100 Omakase). At the price I paid, I expect excellence. Better And more consistent experiences at other restaurants with price range

They accommodated our every request to be outside, less awning, more awning, etc. The courtyard was quiet and pretty with very few patrons at that time of day. We sat over coffee and chatted for the longest time with no expectation that we needed to leave. We felt very looked after. Great brunch menu and service.

The parking around the restaurant is scarce, and unless you want to walk a few blocks, it is better to cab. We ordered the Chef special Shokai Aburi, the Minami roll, and the Ebi Oshi Sushi. We were full after the fourth course and more food kept coming out. To improve my dinner, is the service. We had a good server, but then other service staff kept coming to our table, rushing us. The service staff should of taken direction from our server or the manager as to whether or not we had anymore food coming. They could of also checked the service computer, to see. They were clearing the table after two appetizers had came out. I was even asked more than once if we had more food coming out. The Shokai Aburi at $80 per, is not a one dish item.

The food at Minami is unique and of superb quality, but we found the environment exceedingly noisy. This is not the place for a romantic dinner, or for conversation. The cost reflects the quality of the food, but for us the environment detracted from our enjoyment and made us feel that we hadn't received value for the high cost. We went to Minami for the sushi and were surprised that the choices in that category were limited. We wouldn't go back.
