A word from Minami Restaurant
Located in the vibrant neighborhood of Yaletown, Minami Restaurant delivers one of the most unique and innovative dining experiences to Vancouver. Minami follows the pioneering footsteps of sister restaurant, Miku for introducing the Aburi style or flame seared technique to Vancouver’s thriving sushi scene in 2008. Aburi sushi requires no soy sauce or wasabi, as the chefs create specialty sauces using non-traditional Japanese ingredients to complement the flavor properties of each variety of fish.

From the kitchen, seasonal and regional ingredients are integrated into dishes to reflect the diversity of responsible food choices. Traditionally trained Japanese chefs are inspired by global flavors and cutting edge techniques to create a new style of cuisine. The culinary approach evokes passion and beauty, as each dish is artfully plated on custom-designed Arita Yaki plate ware, handpicked by owner, Seigo Nakamura.

Diner Reviews
  • "We've been to Minami a few times now; the first for the Omakase, the second for an evening bite, and this time for an early brunch. We didn't review the second experience, which was pretty mediocre (Kale Goma-ae 3.5/5, Salmon Oshi Bites 3.75/5), but the brunch was probably the best of our lives. We had the Hatcho Miso Pork Belly Eggs Benny and the Weekend Zen, the content of which I don't remember but the quality of which I will not question. Everything was fantastic except the Ebi Fritter, which I find has too thick of a batter, thought my fiance loves it. We sat on the patio, which was nice and breezy but not too cold. The service was neutral; nothing special but no negative impact on the experience."

  • "I been to Minami many many time, each time I dine there and it make me wanted to come again now i try to dine out there at least one a month. I'll always recommend my friends over there and each and everyone that's dine there were happy with the food"

  • "Sat at the bar & ate way too much! Fish was all fresh & the preparations were interesting - the aburi/lightly-flamed items were excellent, as we're the special appetizers. The saki list was extensive, with saki cocktails as well ( tho I didn't try any). I'll come back!"

  • "Enjoyed the food and the experience. The servings are quite large especially for lunch. Good value for the price."

  • "Four of us ate as advised by our server starting with a few appetizers, followed by a couple of entrees, and ending with sushi. It was fun and delicious. Will definitely go back next time I am in town."

  • "Lots of Hype for this restaurant. Food is different but the prices are very high for the food you get. Look for a sushi place with a line up and local people where ever you are staying."

  • "My friends and I went for brunch one Saturday at 11:30. They accommodated our every request to be outside, less awning, more awning, etc. The courtyard was quiet and pretty with very few patrons at that time of day. We sat over coffee and chatted for the longest time with no expectation that we needed to leave. We felt very looked after. Great brunch menu and service."

  • "Food was good, but service was not friendly at all. Presentation of dishes are not great. I ordered party platter before and I was almost shocked! They don't know how to put sushi nicely in a tray? Especially when it was $110 for 3 servings. Other cheaper restaurants do much better job. Very disappointing..."

  • "Forgetful waitress : We ordered the cold dishes like sushi and sashimi first and she forgot half of the order. Unfriendly manager : He didn't check or clean our table before he put out another dishes, asked us to moved around the dishes but how can we put the dishes away? there is no room on the table and he seemed to be annoyed and said the dishes he carry is hot and he have to took it back to the kitchen..."

  • "Another great dinner at Minami; sharing the plates let's us try a great variety of the amazing flavours available."

  • "Went early before reservation to have drinks. Just because waiter's shift ended, we had to settle our bill instead carrying it into our dinner. Was not impressed. Ordered the Omakase with Sake pairing. For the price ( about $225 per person), food was not better than other restaurants that offered the same. The special menu lacked full descriptions of what we were eating....usually get an in depth explanation of where sake or food originated or how it was made etc.(last tine I came it was great and I only ordered the $100 Omakase). At the price I paid, I expect excellence. Better And more consistent experiences at other restaurants with price range"

  • "The quality of food is close to Miku, but not quite there. However, the value is a lot better as prices at Minami are more affordable."

  • "The parking around the restaurant is scarce, and unless you want to walk a few blocks, it is better to cab. We ordered the Chef special Shokai Aburi, the Minami roll, and the Ebi Oshi Sushi. We were full after the fourth course and more food kept coming out. To improve my dinner, is the service. We had a good server, but then other service staff kept coming to our table, rushing us. The service staff should of taken direction from our server or the manager as to whether or not we had anymore food coming. They could of also checked the service computer, to see. They were clearing the table after two appetizers had came out. I was even asked more than once if we had more food coming out. The Shokai Aburi at $80 per, is not a one dish item. "

  • "My wife and I had the 6 course tasting menu (Shokai Aburi). The seafood and short rib servings stood out; everything else, also very good. The sake flight is very affordable ($20) and a great introduction to the meal."

  • "The food at Minami is unique and of superb quality, but we found the environment exceedingly noisy. This is not the place for a romantic dinner, or for conversation. The cost reflects the quality of the food, but for us the environment detracted from our enjoyment and made us feel that we hadn't received value for the high cost. We went to Minami for the sushi and were surprised that the choices in that category were limited. We wouldn't go back. "

  • "They said they could make an eggs benny without the porkbelly... but failed to mention it would be the same price with or without. "

The service was very intimate and very polite and approachable. The food was well priced, and well recommended for each course. Awesome, Just awesome."

  • "I took my wife here for our wedding anniversary. I am a regular at Blue Water Cafe (at least once a month), but we thought we would try something else. We were first seated at a table directly in front of the door. I asked to be moved to a more private spot which was made to seem like a really big deal although it was an empty weeknight. The hostess asked where we wanted to sit and I said, "I don't really care as long as it's not in front of the washroom door". That's exactly where she put us! It then took over 15 minutes before our server came by and it was only because we went to asked someone at the bar. Our last experience was good, but poor inconsistency is so bad. Some of the staff were green, unpolished, even a bit unfriendly."

  • "It was our 2 year anniversary and we chose Minami as our restaurant of choice, as my partner loves Japanese food and was quite excited when this restaurant finally opened. Positive: -Waitress was great. Connected with us and great demeanor. -Sake brewed specifically for Minami was amazing. Perfect complement to any meal. Negative: -Potions were miniscule. $100 for 14 pieces of nigiri and 10 pieces of sashimi. When we asked about portion sizes, were informed that they were average sized, and for what we ordered, we would be full. We ate again after we left. -During booking, mentioned it was our anniversary. Were seated in the middle of a long bench, no privacy, barely could speak over the noise of surrounding patrons. -EXTREMELY loud."

  • "We had a wonderful experience and will definitely be back. Food was delicious and gorgeously presented. Extremely satisfied with our appy (chicken and foie gras gyozas) and our entrees (premium aburi sushi and Minami Zen). Then the restaurant hit a home run with dessert. The green tea opera cake with matcha green tea ice cream was to die for! The flavours are so intricate and well balanced! Can't wait to try sister restaurant Miku."

  • "I've been a few times to celebrate special occasions and without fail each time have been an amazing experience. Food is just fabulous from preparation which we viewed from our sushi bar seating, the presentation and most important the exquisite taste of each item. Good choices on drinks, but definitely focus on trying as many food items as you can. Love the service from the head sushi chef at the bar...I always ask to sit here. Just LOVE this place!!!!!"

  • "Went to minami today for lunch. We were greeted by a friendly hostess, and our server David was very knowledgeable about the menu and provided us with an excellent service. Minami zen was delicious as usual, and their new dessert blueberry lime tart was also super delicious! Definitely going back sometime soon."

  • "I love sushi and japanese food and love the food here. The rolls are great, the salads, the sablefish, everything i've tried is great. The only thing i would complain about is when they announce each guests' arrival with a loud yell. If you are sitting close to the sushi bar and you are one of the first guests there, you will be hearing that A LOT which completely interrupts your conversation...so i've asked to move twice now. ANother minor thing is that they dont have any herbal teas. I love to have mint or chamomile tea with my dessert (i cant handle the caffiene in the evening)...i think to buy a box of herbal tea leaves is cheap and doesnt go bad so why not. But the food is excellent."

  • "We were in Vancouver for the weekend and my husband wanted some sushi. He just happened to find Minami by doing a Google search. We were wowed in every way!!! I was not a sushi person before eating here, but now I am! The food was not only delicious, but each dish was a work of art. The service was amazing and the setting was upscale without being pretentious. We might go back to Vancouver just to go to Minami again! We're actually hoping they'll open one in Seattle to save us the trip!!"

  • "We frequent M quite often and have always had a great experience. However, the other night fell a bit short. Ordered steak. Steak was delicious, but the mushroom side dish tasted stale like it has been sitting in old oil for a couple days. Couldn't eat it. The service, while friendly, very slow. Took some time to get any service at all, and she was v slow picking up drinks from the bar. Was well into our entrees and still no bottle of wine that we had ordered. Finally asked someone else to get it when he happened to see our drinks were empty and asked if we wanted to order more drinks. If we go back at all, will go during a non busy time."

  • "I dare say the best Japanese restaurant in Vancouver and that's saying a lot because we sure have lots of great Japanese food. It is a bit pricey but you get what you pay for - quality food and service. Innovative cooking. Great tastes."

  • "We sat at the bar on Saturday night at 6:15. We were assisted by several people in regards to the menu within the first five minutes but after that it was very difficult to place an order or ask questions. We weren't really sure who to ask. Our bar chef seemed very young and unsure. When we did ask him something he went to ask someone else. We were planning on ordering a cocktail to start and then some beer and sake with dinner but that didn't happen. We ordered two cocktails to start but one of them never arrived. After 20 minutes we had to flag someone down to order another beverage. Which was only the beginning. The food was good but seemed to be ruined by the lack of service."
