MillenniumExcellence service, impressive foodI had a friend from out of town visit and offer to meet for dinner. I had heard of Millennium for awhile but never had a chance to go, or a friend who wanted to try an upscale all veggie place, so this was my opportunity. While I'm a vegetarian, my guests weren't, but I knew they were be impressed with the food, and the freshness and they certainly were. The service was excellent (we got a complimentary appetizer!) attentive, and not overly fussy. The food was fresh, in-season and very well made. Still, I had a great time with my mom. We arrived early and were the 2nd guests seated in a nice booth that could fit a party double our size. Small plates are reasonably priced and all quite tasty. We had mushroom salad with papadams, fried green tomatoes and wilted spinach salad. Bread and lentil spread comes with every meal. Had 2 specialty drinks and wine. Pricey but tasty. For main meals we had Teff burrito, tamale and artichoke/fava bean gratin. Fava bean gratin was by far the best. All quite pricey, but preparation is beautiful and all were flavorful. Seems like a lot of money for what you get though. Had great service and it is a pretty dining area and bar. From delicious, interesting, and unique food to great service and a warm ambiance -- it was top notch. I got the seasonal 5-course tasting menu with wine pairing. As a vegan, What a treat to be able to eat everything on the menu. Fairly expensive but mostly just because I did chefs choice. You could probably get a meal for 2 including wine for 100 if you ordered straight from the menu. I found this restaurant when I was searching the web for a suitable (and not all of us were vegetarians) restaurant while visiting San Francisco last year. It was so delicious that I returned! The menu is creative and tasty. The entrees are reasonably priced and the service was impeccable. The Shaved Parsnip & Carrot "Noodles"salad was disappointing (Flavors and texture just did not connect) but the Wilted Bloomsdale Spinach & Gravenstein Apple Salad worked well. We had three entrees, which ranged from 'OK' to excellent. The Brik Pastry Purse is a thing of beauty but again the combination of flavors and textures was 'off'. The Maple-Thyme Glazed Smoked Tempeh was as good as other reviewers have suggested. After hearing a great review of Millenium from a co-worker I brought my special lady for our 1-year anniversary. I'm very critical of vegetarian food: having grown up vegetarian and switching later in life, I've always been wary of bland raw lettuce plates. I like fat. I like protein. Sometimes a steak is just necessary... Or is it? Millenium is the kind of restaurant that makes me question that. The food is so good it reminds you that you can eat like a vegetarian and not miss out on anything. The portions are generous and the food is savory, hearty and delicate. The tasting menu changes twice a week. The staff was quick in setting us another table in a separate room. The room was without windows unfortunately but very quiet and private. So we were very happy to be able to be together as a group and had great table conversations. We booked this for my daughter who is 12 and a vegetarian. Both her and my husband also loved the food too. They couldn't stop talking about the meal the next day. My son, who is 10, was fine with the food. I wouldn't bring every kid here but ours love it. I think he really wanted the tamale that I ordered and not his risotto which was very good. The sweet potato tamale dish was amazing. Best one of the night. But, the food from the chef's tasting menu was great too, especially the salad and the "purse" entree filled with mushrooms, etc.
We will definitely be coming back here the next chance we get. I had a similar problem here, but this time it was because there was so much amazing sounding food to choose from. I can't wait to go back and try more from their menu. The wait staff was also tremendously polite and helpful.
Four non-vegan friends joined me for dinner and they really couldn't have been happier with their food, too.
