Diner Reviews
  • "My antelope was delicious - my husband had the duo of sweetbreads and osso bucco. The sweetbreads were perfect but the osso bucco was a bit dry and lacking sauce. Service was professional, friendly and attentive, and it was really not as expensive as we expected."

  • "The level at which the Mille Fleurs dining environment is managed has kept me returning to this gem of a restaurant for at least five years. Customers are sure to enjoy a gastronomic experience beyond compare."

  • "Celebrated our anniversary and Mille Fleurs exceeded every expectation. Friendly, knowledgeable staff, great menu (theVenison was superb, not gammy and tasty/tender) with wonderful homemade spaetzle. Gracious staff, attentive but largely invisible. Just love this place. Worth every penny."

  • "Service is impeccable, food perfectly prepared and the setting is warm. Great restaurant experience."

  • "Just a delightful place to have a great meal. The Wiener Schnitzel with the spatzle is outstanding. So is the Dover sole."

  • "The place positively exudes class and charm. The menu offers a nicely varied selection of appetizers and entrees. Apparently I was the only one disappointed with the food. My fiancee's venison chop was near perfect--medium rare, tender and juicy, with no hint of gamey flavor. Our companions pronounced the roast duck and tenderloin steak both excellent. My wiener schnitzel, however, was overcooked, dry and tough. The dish cried out for some sauce--perhaps a nice marsala? Service was adequate and the waiter answered our questions knowledgeably. If you bring your own wine, beware of the corkage charge. It's calculated by the millliter, and we were billed $60 for one large bottle. On the way out, we briefly joined a lively piano bar scene."

  • "Restaurant is located at a quiet, fantastic neighborhood and is a Cousy, romantic place with great (French) service, variety of menu choices and fabulous food and desert."

  • "Mille Fleurs is fantastic in every way. The food, service, atmosphere, wine and location are all outstanding. We have been there several times and it has always been a good experience."

  • "Always great....service is Michelin star quality. Menu could use a few new items..."

  • "We had eaten at Mille Fleurs quite often, several years ago. It was always very good. The garden setting and small dining areas have an intimacy and old world charm. Our recent evening there was excellent: good variety of menu choices for our guests, the food beautifully prepared, paired, and presented with a varied and tasteful wine list. The service was excellent as well - thoughtful, timely and very attentive. The pacing of the meal was superb. This is something that is missing from many restaurants in San Diego. The Maitre d' read our company like a book, and delivered a truly memorable experience."

  • "I took my wife here for her birthday and we both really enjoyed it. We were staying at the Inn at Rancho Santa Fe which is just across the street from this restaurant. It has a very formal feel to it with professional greetings, yet with a relaxed feel to it all. They genuinely seemed happy to have you there. The service was excellent and the food was delicious. The menu changes daily so you could go back multiple times. My pet peeve, an empty water glass, was never a problem here. They were extremely attentive. If I have one complaint, it's the lack of a good selection of lower-priced wines. The bulk of them appeared to be in the $60+ range for a bottle and not everyone wants to spend that."

  • "Mille Fleurs is one of those restaurants that never seems to miss a beat and offers a wonderful dining experience every time. We only get to the San Diego area in Feb. and March, but never miss dining here. We've been doing so for many years. Just one quibble this time: my lamb loin, while tasty, was gristly, and the accompanying chop was fatty. Otherwise a fine meal from start to finish."

  • "My husband and I celebrated our 45th wedding anniversary at Mille Fleur. It was a very special evening. The food, service, and ambience were wonderful. We look forward to our next visit. Thank you for making our special occasion even more special."

  • "Andrew the head waiter was excellent. Entertaining and knowledgeable. The support staff were perfect. Quiet and efficient. We dined in the private booth. The opportunity for conversation between 6 people was provided with the quiet room. Quail and lobster salads were remarked upon as amazing as was the lobster bisque. We were sorry the Sole was not available. However, the other entrees were great. Thank you Dr. Drake"

  • "We finally made it to Mille Fluers and we were not disappointed. The service was great. Be prepared for long waits between visits from your waiter, although the busboy is constantly swinging by. This is done on purpose so you can enjoy your drink and companion in an unhurried pace. Your courses will come perfectly timed with the completion of your current one. I *highly* recommend the Pavlova for dessert! So delicious! That being said, this really wasn't our kind of place. We were the youngest people there by 20 years and the French maitre'd glad handling all the regulars by last name was just a little too pretentious for us. However, getting to actually see someone pay with an American Express Black Card was a fitting cap to the evening."

  • "As usual, the food was great and the ambiance was wonderful. The waiters could not do enough for you. I would highly recommend it."

  • "We frequent this restaurant once every few years, but now it'll be more often. Bertrand, an iconic figure in San Diego, has maintained the very high high quality over many years. The wine list is especially good. The menu features traditional French in addition to more exotic (and great) offerings like antelope. What we like is the relaxed atmosphere, in contrast to the quite stuffy ambiance found in such places in France."

  • "Always a treat to for out of town guests. Dress code more relaxed than in the past."

  • "Simply amazing! an enjoyable evening that's highly recommended to anyone with a special occasion in mind and money some to spend. It was expensive but well worth the cost. Thank you"

  • "A visit on the early side for a Valentine's Day dinner was superb. The food, as always, steak and fillet, lobster salad, and dover sole were all to die for as was the delectable deserts and the service, as always, was superb even with a full house for the holiday."
    Dined on 2/14/2014
  • "Granted, I realize Valentine's Day is the worst day of the year to go out for a nice meal. You get the mediocre quality of restaurant week food, without the discounts, but rather a huge mark-up. But we thought our old stand-by Mille Fleur's wouldn't fall victim to that trap. We were wrong. Despite making reservations months in advance, we were squeezed into the bar and the service could hardly have been worse or slower. The food wasn't bad, but with at least a 50% mark-up from normal, we'd expect better. Next year we'll stay home and let the amateurs done out."

  • "Our favorite restaurant for romantic special occasions. Never disappointed. A bit pricey, but great value. We should go more often."

  • "The special Valentine's Day Menu was absolutely superb! Great starters and excellent entrees. I had the New York and Fillet Duo and my wife had the Osso Buco. Both were done to perfection. The service was outstanding as always. If you're looking for a special place on a special holiday or just looking for great food and service, Mille Fleurs is it!"

  • "There are so many details to love about this restaurant. The maitre d' Marco is amazingly polished and attentive from his impeccably tailored suits to his eye for every detail being handled perfectly. Every time I dine here he is as enthusiastic and careful as if it were his first day at work. Not sure how he does it? I request Bruno as my waiter because he is the consummate Frenchman with a great sense of humor, his unpretentious perfectionism, and oozing charm. Aside from these two stellar persons, the restaurant is always detailed perfectly. It is squeaky clean. The food is delicious, delightfully presented in the French tradition, and the drinks are perfectly mixed and always with an interesting presentation. Best in San Diego."

  • "It had been almost 14 years since I had dined at Mille Fleurs, so I was really looking forward to the evening. The decor has been updated a bit , still comfortable and elegant with out being stuffy. The staff was extremely friendly yet professional and very knowledgable. Our server recommended the perfect wine for my husbands dish , the elk, which was superb , you could cut it with a spoon! I had the five course tasting menu along with the wine pairings. I found some of my favorite traditional French dishes like sweetbreads and trout quenelles . Every dish was beautifully presented with just the right amount of sauce. We have dined at Bertrand's other restaurant Mr. A 's several times, MILLES Fleurs most definitely is superior in cuisine."

  • "The service is excellent. The staff are attentive, but do not smother you, which makes this a comfortable environment. The dinner menu is interesting, but is limited. If anyone in your party seeks plain food, this may not be a good place. Venison and Veal Wiener Schnitlze got high praise. Scallop and skate were average."

  • "As a former New Yorker I was very happy to have a dining experience on a high level with La Cirque. An A for service, menu and quality of the food served. My Tito Martini was served as requested, extra, extra dry, shaken with blue cheese olives on the side, delighted to see cod on the menu and perfectly prepared. Only had a glass of Sauvignon Blanc, however, it was very, very good. Of course, I will return."

  • "Food was just not that great; very surprising. I was hoping for better, but it was a minimum effort for restaurant week. No texture or original taste. Will not be going back."

  • "Must experience this San Diego gem!! A place you MUST visit!"

  • "We went on Restaurant week and was impressed with how perfectly prepared each dish was. Service was great, although it seems they're not used to seeing young people. The shining star here was certainly the food which did not disappoint."

  • "I took my son here for his 22nd birthday after a concert in La Jolla. The evening couldn't have turned out better. We felt as if we were the only ones there. The atmosphere was perfect for a mother and adult son, though I would love to return with a romantic partner as well. The presentation of each plate pleased our eyes as much as the every bite pleased our palate. I casually mentioned his birthday when making the reservation, not intending to bring attention to it; at the end of the meal, he was treated to single candle and a simple plate of fruit and "Happy 22nd Birthday" written in chocolate - a classic touch that made him feel special on his birthday without embarrassing him. Tres bien! Already looking forward to the next time."

  • "Enjoyed the birthday singing - twice. Waiter very knowledgeable and pleasant. Delicious carrot soup and smoked trout. Lovely experience. Liked wine pairings with courses."
    Dined on 1/24/2014
  • "We must commend our table captain, or server, whom was extremely amiable, and apologetic; however, the remainder of the support staff, especially, the Maître d' and kitchen, unfortunately, very much let him down. Initial courses were delicious, but entreé and dessert service were disappointing, making our dining experience awkward and uncomfortable."
    Dined on 1/24/2014
  • "We went there for restaurant week in order to sample some of the restaurant's features. None of us were disappointed, as usual. The service is impeccable and the food quality is excellent. While the food choices were somewhat limited with one veal, one beef, one lamb, one fish, one pork selections, the ones we tried were quite good. The appetizers and desserts were unque and tasty. We go here several times during the year and are never disappointed."

  • "Consistently the best restaurant in SD. Been going for 20 years and the experience never disappoints. This is my reference restaurant, and after every meal elsewhere, I say: "Mille Fleurs would have been better." The chef has a magical way with the basics. Tremendous soups which aren't heavy. Salad dressings that are perfectly balanced. Entrees that aren't over the top. Just well prepared, elegant, refined, studied. Service is impeccable. Servers are peers, not struggling students. They know their menu, the have respect for the chef, they enjoy the job, and you can feel their passion for a perfect experience. The entire operation revels in its approach to find dining, and deservedly so. This is the epitome of fine dining in San Diego."

  • "Pleasant, Very Professional service with a smile, Delicious food, and great Wine recommendations. The restaurant is beautiful inside and out, and had a warm, inviting atmosphere. For a place with food and service of this quality, it was very unpretentious."

  • "Reminded us of dinners from the 1970's. Is there such a thing as too much service which then crosses the line and turns bad? Caters to the older generation that likes someone hovering over them. Seen its day. Too uncomfortable for our tastes but others may still enjoy this atmosphere. Good food and they know their wines."

  • "We had a wonderful experience at Mille Fleurs. The food was great, the service attentive but not overbearing. It was restaurant week which made the experience enjoyable not to mention very reasonable. I would recommend Mille Fleurs for any occasion from a romantic dinner to a casual lunch. Can' t wait to go back."
