Diner Reviews
  • "While entertaining our house guest we turned to our good friends at Michelangelo's for Sunday Brunch. Everything was perfect, the atmosphere was nice with the piano player doing an excellent job. Service was spot on as always, ready with anything you need without hovering or annoying interruptions. The food at Michelangelo's is delicious, good portions and beautiful presentation. We were talking about our Sunday Brunch all day, it was that great. Thanks to the staff of Michelangelo's for a job well done."

  • "Resturant set up well. Servers were attentive but not knowlegble about food. It was brunch and I ordered eggs cooked well done and my steak med well. I got runny eggs and over cooked steak that had grizzle in it. My friend that was with me had the stuffed chicken and it was dry. Probably will not go back."

  • "My boyfriend and I went for lunch and had a great time. We ordered the carpaccio for the appetizer, which was delicious, and 2 glasses of the house Pinot Grigio. For entrees we ordered the Scampi Michelangelo and the Chicken Parmigiana. The Scampi had large, perfectly cooked shrimp with pasta tossed in a light white sauce. I think it could have had a little more salt but overall it was good. The Chicken Parmigiana had a lot of flavor and the cheese melted over it made it taste even more amazing, it also came with a side of pasta alfredo. The dishes were served very hot which was really nice because they seemed freshly made. The service was great as well. Our server was nice and attentive. Overall, it was a very fun and romantic lunch."

  • "The waiter did not give us each a menu. No oil for bread until we asked. Brought the wrong entrée. The wrong entrée was overcooked and tough. When we needed the waiter, he was nowhere in sight. All in all -- not what they used to be over the years."

  • "While the music and ambiance was very good. We were disappointed in the service and lack of availability of wine and food on the menus. We ordered a bottle of wine but were told they were out of it. Then we ordered veal piccata and veal marsala. First we were told they were out of veal picatta and advised to order chicken piccata but that veal marsala was available. When we asked how it was possible to have veal marsala and chicken piccata but not veal piccata since they must have the veal and the piccata sauce the waiter told us that he really didn't know and later told me that in fact veal marsala was also not available. How can an Italian restaurant not have veal?? We ended up eating only appetizers."

  • "Went there for Sunday Father's Day Brunch and there was no A/C upstairs, fortunately dined downstairs. It was still unpleasant when going to the restroom located upstairs. Would have been nice for our party to dine in the nice areas upstairs as we usually do for special occasions."

  • "Caesar salad ok but could be better with addition of croutons or the modern version of a Parmesan crisp. Homemade pasta is excellent. Spinach and lobster ravioli was divine. Large tender chunks of lobster and delicious white sauce. Very nice waiter."

  • "have loved Michelangelo's for 40 years, but probably our last visit. Didn't have the wine we chose, server pleasant but seemed disinterested, impersonal. Insalata spinaci o.k. but as my scallopini piccata, as unintersting as we were to the waiter. Husband ordered his usual eggplant parmigiani and it was worse than frozen entree with a HUGE pile of fettucini alfreda side - no veggies. Sauces worse than bottled from grocery shelf. Husband, not easily deterred from dessert, ordered creme brulee - tasteless, too thick. Water tried to flambe - couldn't - probably because it had been sitting out so long alchohol evaporated. Enjoyed piano tho a bit overbearing volume in the small room (with the ceiling draping same stains as years ago.)"

  • "My husband and were disappointed in the food and the service. I ordered Linguini with white clam sauce and expected real clams in the shell. I received a bowl of spaghetti noodles with minced clams, very little sauce and very little flavor. My husband had a special with mixed seafood, lobster tail, in a pomodoro sauce. Hi entree was much better but not worth $40.00! There are too many other restaurants in this city with better food at the same or lower price."

  • "This place was a great last minuet decision. We were able to get a set very quickly, and the live music was already playing. Great tasting food. Wine selection was different."

  • "They take great care of my group of 10 that came out to celebrate some birthdays. The osso bucco was delicious, and the service was more than accommodating!"

  • "We went to Michelangelo's on a whim because we wanted Italian and something new. I have to admit that we were underwhelmed. The food was good but not spectacular and the live piano/string players were nice but the restaurant was in serious need of updating. While the food was good, nothing stood out as worthy of a repeat visit. Probably the most telling fact, at 7 pm on a long weekend Friday night it was half empty. I think you can get equal or better Italian food elsewhere and I know for sure that there are better places to eat in that area."

  • "Excellent meal. Great ambiance. Waiter was slow. Plus, difficult to get the check and to pay it. We plan to return, as we have on occasion for 40 years."

  • "The ambiance is incredible at this place. The service was impecable. Miguel really took care of us. He was attentive, helpful and always ready to serve. The food was great! Of course we had pasta dishes. I can't wait to return and try other foods."

  • "This is a location I've forgotten about from the good old days. Haven't been there in 25 years, and I am very pleased to see that the place is still a neighborhood gem. I was pleasantly surprised to discover live piano music performed every day. We will be back! Special thanks to our great waiter, but unfortunately I've forgotten his name."

  • "First of all, attempted 3 times pulling into valet parking. There was no room for cars to both pull in and leave. place was dark and felt was eating at a wake. Piano music was pleasant, and felt attitude from server so- So. Appetizer was good, entrée was not. Was overcooked and bad presentation. Place felt the same as when I was last there 20 years ago. Now I know why I have not been back since."

  • "The restaurant is very charming. With the tree in the dinning room, slanted floors and overall sweet decorum we were excited to try the food. it was very disappointing. My sons steak was tough like beef jerky. My eggs Benedict were tepid at best. just not good. We were there five years ago and it was delicious ...maybe a really bad day?"

  • "We were disappointed that on Easter Brunch the only 4 breakfast items were all poached egg based. This was surprising and disappointing to us and the wait staff. What made it worse is that 4 of the 5 eggs were overcooked to the point of being soft hard boiled. When shared with the manager, no action other than he would tell the Chef. This went from a fav to a bust tat quickly. "

  • "We had a coupon and decided to try Michelangelo's since it had been 20 years since our last visit. Sad to say, nothing had changed. The entire building has not been renovated in anyway we could tell. My husband and I had beef carpaccio ( it was discolored by the lemon juice on it - not something we cared for), followed by the house salad ( very good) and then split the resist with tomatoes special (excellent). The key lime pie was not tart and the crust very hard. Wine was fine but overpriced. There are so many other Italian restaurants that present a much better meal for less $$. Once every 20 years is enough. I will say our lead waiter was very nice, but his helpers need some more training"

  • "I took my girlfriend on a tuesday for her birthday. It was quiet and piano playing in the background. The food was great and they give big portion."

  • "The atmosphere was beautiful. The server was very courteous, but wasn't around very much. We had to wait quite a while in between portions and to get our check, but this may be part of their "romantic feel" to give lots of privacy and time. The food was pretty good. We had a mussel appetizer with some that were not even opened, but the ones that were, tasted great. I was not expecting the $160 bill for 2 adults and a kid though. Include the tip for the piano player and waiter, and we paid $200."

  • "I see that this restaurant has many loyal patrons, and I was hoping to become one of them. Alas, then entire experience was bad. They insisted on valet parking both parties' vehicles, despite our protestations (my husband drove off and parked elsewhere). We entered through the drink preparation area, making me think we had come in through the back door. I had to ask for menus. The table was incredibly small for four people. The service was marginal, with the wrong wine poured and the wrong side dish presented. And the quality of the food was just average. My eggplant parmigiana was a thin slice of eggplant in a watery sauce. The wine is terribly overpriced. I truly wish that I had even one favorable thing to say, but I just cannot find one."

  • "My review may not be fair due to the time me and wife dined. We had 5:30 reservations so it was pretty quiet, the music was not playing yet and the waiters were just waking up. The waiters can use a bit more personality. Observation, I made the reservation over the internet and mentioned it was my wife's birthday, but the staff did not mention anything nor did they ask if I would like a dessert with a candle or something to celebrate, which means that the comment on the reservation was not read. So I guess early at 5:30 the whole ambiance experience was not really all that good, I image later at night with the music and more people that it would be more energetic. For what is worth....."

  • "Last Sunday for brunch. The waiter brought out two orders that were not ours, which belonged on nearby tables. Between the mistaken orders, one of the young waiters tried to bring us menus and we had to inform him that we'd already ordered. The mistakes seemed to be generating from orders given by the main waiter to the staff. This does not fit the ambiance that Michelangelo's is trying to promote (and is charging $$ with a promise to provide). I have had better service at single $ establishments, and this is unfortunate. I hope that something can be done to restore the service and faith in this potentially wonderful restaurant."

  • "MIchelangelo's was a nice place, with very good food at a moderate price. It is not a large restaurant, but rather quaint and with a definite charm about it. The menu had some of the usual expected items for an Italian restaurant, but also some unusual dishes of their own recipe. The service was very good up until it was time to pay the check. At that point, the server seemed to disappear, taking about 20 minutes to get the check once we told him we were ready for it. Other than that, it was a nice experience."

  • "I hadn't been to this place in about 15 years and came back for Sunday brunch...it was just as delicious as it used to be. The artichoke appetizer was the BEST I have ever had. Had the shrimp n' scallop pasta and my girlfriend & I couldn't get enough of it!!! AWESOME PLACE!"

  • "We always like to eat after the theater but it's hard to find restaurants that stay open late. Saw the good reviews and thought we would give it a try. Open Table showed a table for 10:30 so I made the reservation. We got there at 10:20 and a nice, but clueless, waiter told me they were closed. My "but I have a reservation...." was met with a disinterested shrug. While I sort of understand closing early because there was no business, an email would have been nice! (The site wouldn't let me submit my comments without rating food and service which is kinda funny....noise level was easy because it was certainly quiet)!!"

  • "While the menue is very traditional and full of standard favorites, the quality of the food was excellent, well presented and moderately priced. The wine list has a good selection. The dining room is is interesting with a large live tree growing in the middle of the room. The piano and bass duo were great and did not make conversation difficult. The table dressing, candles, soft lighting, good food and quiet atmosphere lent itself to a relaxing and romantic evening."

  • "I would recommend Michangelo's for quiet place to dine before a show. We went early and had the place to ourselves. The wine choices were excellent. We enjoyed stuffed mushrooms, pasta and fresh fish. The staff was very attentive. Nice change of pace from the hustle and bustle of downtown dining before a show. I had not been here in over 20 years and I would gladly go again!"

  • "Michelangelo's is a classic that has been pumping out good Italian for decades. The signature tree still adorns the main dining room and #'s club is still open (believe it or not) across the street. So the little restaurant that's out lived some of the Montrose greats (like Ruggels and LaStrada) keeps on providing a value added service to both community and greater Houston area. As to the food, its good, portions are large so you won't leave hungry. The service and the restaurant could use a facelift, but all in all - its still a classic."

  • "We've been to Michelangelo's many times over the years, but felt this Sunday evening dining experience was disappointing. While food & wine prices are on par, the Cannelloni - which we previously considered the most authentic and best we have had in the Houston area (or even in all the U.S) - was substandard, clearly held too long under a warming lamp and covered only in Bechamel without the usual additional tomato cream sauce. Our mixed 'appetizer' of crab cakes, fried mozzarella, calamari (excellent), etc. was very good, as was the veal chop entree, reasonably priced by today's standards. What really dropped our rating for this visit, however, was the extremely slow & unresponsive service, by far the worst we have experienced there."
