  • "I see that this restaurant has many loyal patrons, and I was hoping to become one of them. Alas, then entire experience was bad. They insisted on valet parking both parties' vehicles, despite our protestations (my husband drove off and parked elsewhere). We entered through the drink preparation area, making me think we had come in through the back door. I had to ask for menus. The table was incredibly small for four people. The service was marginal, with the wrong wine poured and the wrong side dish presented. And the quality of the food was just average. My eggplant parmigiana was a thin slice of eggplant in a watery sauce. The wine is terribly overpriced. I truly wish that I had even one favorable thing to say, but I just cannot find one."

  • "My review may not be fair due to the time me and wife dined. We had 5:30 reservations so it was pretty quiet, the music was not playing yet and the waiters were just waking up. The waiters can use a bit more personality. Observation, I made the reservation over the internet and mentioned it was my wife's birthday, but the staff did not mention anything nor did they ask if I would like a dessert with a candle or something to celebrate, which means that the comment on the reservation was not read. So I guess early at 5:30 the whole ambiance experience was not really all that good, I image later at night with the music and more people that it would be more energetic. For what is worth....."

  • "Last Sunday for brunch. The waiter brought out two orders that were not ours, which belonged on nearby tables. Between the mistaken orders, one of the young waiters tried to bring us menus and we had to inform him that we'd already ordered. The mistakes seemed to be generating from orders given by the main waiter to the staff. This does not fit the ambiance that Michelangelo's is trying to promote (and is charging $$ with a promise to provide). I have had better service at single $ establishments, and this is unfortunate. I hope that something can be done to restore the service and faith in this potentially wonderful restaurant."

  • "MIchelangelo's was a nice place, with very good food at a moderate price. It is not a large restaurant, but rather quaint and with a definite charm about it. The menu had some of the usual expected items for an Italian restaurant, but also some unusual dishes of their own recipe. The service was very good up until it was time to pay the check. At that point, the server seemed to disappear, taking about 20 minutes to get the check once we told him we were ready for it. Other than that, it was a nice experience."

  • "I hadn't been to this place in about 15 years and came back for Sunday brunch...it was just as delicious as it used to be. The artichoke appetizer was the BEST I have ever had. Had the shrimp n' scallop pasta and my girlfriend & I couldn't get enough of it!!! AWESOME PLACE!"

  • "We always like to eat after the theater but it's hard to find restaurants that stay open late. Saw the good reviews and thought we would give it a try. Open Table showed a table for 10:30 so I made the reservation. We got there at 10:20 and a nice, but clueless, waiter told me they were closed. My "but I have a reservation...." was met with a disinterested shrug. While I sort of understand closing early because there was no business, an email would have been nice! (The site wouldn't let me submit my comments without rating food and service which is kinda funny....noise level was easy because it was certainly quiet)!!"

  • "While the menue is very traditional and full of standard favorites, the quality of the food was excellent, well presented and moderately priced. The wine list has a good selection. The dining room is is interesting with a large live tree growing in the middle of the room. The piano and bass duo were great and did not make conversation difficult. The table dressing, candles, soft lighting, good food and quiet atmosphere lent itself to a relaxing and romantic evening."

  • "Michelangelo's is a classic that has been pumping out good Italian for decades. The signature tree still adorns the main dining room and #'s club is still open (believe it or not) across the street. So the little restaurant that's out lived some of the Montrose greats (like Ruggels and LaStrada) keeps on providing a value added service to both community and greater Houston area. As to the food, its good, portions are large so you won't leave hungry. The service and the restaurant could use a facelift, but all in all - its still a classic."

  • "I would recommend Michangelo's for quiet place to dine before a show. We went early and had the place to ourselves. The wine choices were excellent. We enjoyed stuffed mushrooms, pasta and fresh fish. The staff was very attentive. Nice change of pace from the hustle and bustle of downtown dining before a show. I had not been here in over 20 years and I would gladly go again!"

  • "I've heard great things about the place and was looking forward to spending Valentine's Day there. We were seated in the outside patio area. Though it was covered, it was not romantic or proper ambiance for the occasion. The inside had mid lighting, music, and better vibe. It was fixed menu at $75 pp which surprised many of the patrons, but I expected it for the occasion and location. The lobster pasta was good but filet mignon was not good, overcooked and very dry. Dessert was so so Tiramisu and I think chocolate mousse cake."

  • "I really wanted to review this restaurant better, but so much was wrong. Wine is over priced - $42 for a bottle of $12 wine, seating lay out appears to be done by a child, one serving of bread was HORRIBLE, the next close to delicious. The food was better than average, but our table was literally inches from the table to the left and right of us. The couple to our left stopped talking the minute we were seated, and the couple to our right didn't even appear to like each other. That left both tables available for any conversation my date and I wanted to have. When I went to wash up, I saw many tables with more space and the ability to converse without being shoulder to shoulder with a stranger."

  • "We've been to Michelangelo's many times over the years, but felt this Sunday evening dining experience was disappointing. While food & wine prices are on par, the Cannelloni - which we previously considered the most authentic and best we have had in the Houston area (or even in all the U.S) - was substandard, clearly held too long under a warming lamp and covered only in Bechamel without the usual additional tomato cream sauce. Our mixed 'appetizer' of crab cakes, fried mozzarella, calamari (excellent), etc. was very good, as was the veal chop entree, reasonably priced by today's standards. What really dropped our rating for this visit, however, was the extremely slow & unresponsive service, by far the worst we have experienced there."

  • "The first time I dined at Michelangelo's, I was quite impressed by their ambiance, table space, service, and food. This time, however, the entire restaurant was outfitted for Valentine's Day with a special menu. While I don't mind paying the extra amount if the food and service warrant such, I was disappointed by the small table, mediocre food, repeated calls for service, and missed items on the table (even after specific requests were made). In all, the staff seemed hurried and the tables were uncomfortably small (and we are not heavy-set diners, no offense to anyone intended). So, I can't give this restaurant any higher ratings. Based on the money they received, I feel like they got the better end of the deal."

  • "We had not been to Micaelangelos in a long time. We went for lunch on Sunday with a certificate we had purchased for a really good deal, but when we got there, we noticed other diners were having brunch, so we joined the crowd! We both had egg dishes that were very good, our service was top-notch, and we took part in the bottomless champagne. There was a piano player who played very softly and this added to the overall ambiance. We will try not to stay away so long again."

  • "They brought me the wrong meal three times. The problem was that both of the servers attempting to help us spoke broken English at best. I understand that many people in Houston speak Spanish ... but a wait staff should at least be bi-lingual. Food was average at best and way over-priced. Not a good experience."

  • "Went here for Valentine's day, so they had a set menu. Food was quite good. Portions were small. My salad felt like 8 bites, and entree was a little bigger. Food quality though was very high and we both enjoyed our meal. Service was quite poor. Our waiter looked about 16, and while polite, didn't come by often. He never refilled our wine or even asked. Never came by just to check. Quite disappointing for an expensive dinner."

  • "I took my wife here for our early Valentine's celebration (we hate to go out on the actual day - too crazy!). Everything was perfect. We started with Calamari, she got the Snapper, and I got a Filet. All three were fantastic."

  • "My wife and I went back to Michelangelo's for Valentine's Day - actually Valentine's Eve - and the food was as good as it always has been on our previous visits. We sat in one of the rooms off of the main dining area and it was cozy and romantic. We've gone there several times over the years for special occasions and have never been disappointed."

  • "We enjoyed the ambiance and the live music really set the mood, however, the lighting from the vehicles in valet parking was terrible. The table we sat at was facing the valet parking area and every time someone left, we were blinded by the vehicles headlights. I would suggest not sitting by the window at night, nor at table by the valet parking area . Otherwise, this place is definitely a place we would frequent again and tell others as well."

  • "We hadn't been back to Michelangelos in a few years and I doubt I will ever go back again. The service was lousy. We had 9 pm reservations and got promptly seated...but that was all that was prompt. Couples on either side of us came in at least 20 minutes after us and they got their meals 15 minutes before we did...and that after at least a 30 minute wait. Once the food came it was barely warm. The waiter was apparently a master magician because he seemed to disappear and was no where to be found. The food was overpriced and small portions. I won't be going back...a very disappointing experience."

  • "All in all the dinner was a disappointment. When the waiter asked for our drink order, I ordered a bottle of Prosecco for my wife and a friend. The waiter said that they had none and gave some excuse that it hadn't been delivered. Then when he gave us the "Special Valentine's" menu I asked to see the regular menu. I was told that the chef only had the special menu for tonight. There was nothing about this on their web site! Food was ordered. My steak was under cooked my wife's lamb chop had what seemed to be packaged grave on it (she's a chef so she knows). The fish dinner for our friend was OK. We were seated in the midlevel right by the kitchen so the traffic was unbearable. Don't think we'll be going back."

  • "This little gem if a restaurant has been in Houston for ages and has stood against the forces of change. It's still got the quaint old Italian homey feel, yet the service is never slow. The food is simple and elegant with old and new fusions. My family and my husbands family have been coming to this restaurant for years and will never stop. Never had a bad experience. The live piano and the friendly staff are like no other. It's the same great experience very time. Thank you Michaelangelo's for being a tradition that has blessed our family!"

  • "This was an accidental find since we were in the area and open table had an available reservation at the time. We were greeted and seated immediately. We started with the calimari which was very good- fresh with a light breading. The service was very good. Our meals were delicious- eggplant parmesan , and the shrimp scallops. The sauces seemed homemade and fresh. The desserts looked amazing but sad to say we were too full to try them."

  • "The reservation was great, we were seated ahead of time. We waited for our waiter and we waited, the restaurant was not full at the time. Our waiter must have been having an off night, he just couldn't seem to get to our table, couldn't clear our wine glassess, didn't even to bother to offer a wine list! It seems the Italian restaurant must have had a run on foreign beer, only domestic available, maybe it was a good thing he didn't bring or offer a wine list! The service was even worse at the bar! The noise level made it practically impossible to enjoy the live music. The time has come for us to fine a new favorite romantic restaurant, don't see how it would be worth giving them a second chance. Great valet parking!"

  • "Michelangelo's is a great spot for a relatively quiet, classy dinner. It's built in an old Montrose house, with the former patio becoming an enclosed dining area, complete with a live tree that grows through the middle of the restaurant. There's live music provided by a pianist and violinist, and the volume is just right - enough to provide some atmosphere, but not so loud that you have trouble speaking and hearing each other. The food and service were great too. I'm not a big wine person, but the waiter was able to recommend a good, affordable wine for us. The only thing I'd mark them down on is their beer selection - they have Miller Light, and that's all."
