Diner Reviews
  • "Hadn't been in years-been hearing good things lately. We sat out on the patio on a Saturday night. Not Loud, which is so hard to find in LA these days.. Warm, inviting service. Great cocktails. The truffle fries were too good!! We couldn't stop eating them and the bowl was huge! The salmon was moist, slightly smokey and cooked to perfection. The cheeseburger was great. The fish tacos were actually little tostadas, but really flavorful. For dessert we ordered the sticky toffee pudding and the budino. Both were versions that were different than we expected. ST pudding was spice cakey and budino was like molten chocolate cake. Enjoyed both-just not what name implied. Big surprise was that prices were reasonable! Great dinner! Going back soon."

  • "I booked a res for me and my husband for our fifth anniversary. We were really impressed. They seated us on their beautifully lit patio in the back. The food is fantastic. My husband loved the extensive wine list and wants to come back just to taste more wines. I went vegan last year and was pleased they had a few vegan items on their menu. The service was great - the waiter was knowledgeable and both the general manager AND the owner walked over to our table to check on us at some point during dinner. We will be back."

  • "Great food but we could barely see what we were eating. Sat out on the patio which is lovely, but in sore need of some outdoor lighting - little white "christmas" lights under the umbrellas would do a world of good."

  • "We had a great time at Michael's. The owner, Michael, greeted us at our table. We felt like regulars and at home, even though its been twenty years. All staff were gracious and affable. The food was excellent, market fresh, and creative. The truffle fries were hot and addictive. The Washington oysters lovely and light with a blood orange vinaigrette. My loup de mer was perfectly crusty and delicate and the dark chocolate budino dessert was excellent. The garden setting is intimate, comfortable and vibrant. We were four, three generations, and my 22 yr old son felt it was definitely a hot hangout for an older crowd! Yet he thoroughly enjoyed his hamburger! It was a special occasion, an anniversary celebration, and we will return!"

  • "Yes, I was able to bring two Michael's "virgins," as Michael McCarty named them, this Saturday, as well as last Saturday! Both friends loved their food, and I am never disappointed with ANYTHING - the food, atmosphere, or service. Also, Michael McCarty makes the rounds to the diners' tables, and his presence adds to the wonderful experience that is to be had at Michael's!"

  • "I brought a friend to Michael's who'd never had the pleasure of dining there before, and he loved it, as well! EVERYTHING was delicious, and the service & atmosphere fantastic. An aside - the valet is now $8 vs the $20 it used to be, which is fantastic news, and the hostess and valet were as wonderful as can be, too! All pluses - no negatives!!"

  • "I took my best friend out for his birthday dinner. We googled the top ten restaurants in Santa Monica and Michael's was #9 on the list. (Too low!) We perused the menu online and it was very appealing. We liked that it's seasonal. The first thing that stood out was the level of service and courtesy from the valet to everyone we encountered inside the restaurant. We were seated on the outdoor (covered) patio. It's welcoming, lovely and romantic. The noise level was just right...we could hear each other speak. The food was wonderful...best Focaccia bread I've had which was warm, crispy and tender in all the right spots. He had scallops, I had the Jidori chicken. Excellent! Running out of characters...great Cadillac margs!"

  • "Food was excellent, and service was solid. Wine recommendation were spot on and the wine list is very enjoyable. The ambiance is incredible. Very beautiful and romantic and at the same time was able to have larger parties (with kids/etc) without seeming to interfere with my interfere with my intimate meal."

  • "I made a reservation for Valentines day but was not informed they would only have a pre-fixed menu at a set price that we had to order from. Although the food was very good, the service was very bad and all of their staff seemed frantic and rushed, despite the fact that the restaurant was half empty. We only saw our waiter once when he took our order, never checked back in with us and we collected our check from a manager. Also, we did not receive the dessert that was part of the pre-fixed menu and our cocktails didn't arrive until after we received our second course."

  • "We ate at Michael's on Valentine's Day. They added many more tables to the patio than I remembered from the last time we were there. They were placed in a way that didn't make it too crowded. There was a four course set menu for $95 from which you had 2 choices for each course. It look a while to get our drinks, but once we ordered, the courses came in rapid succession. The first two courses were pre-made (soup or oysters and salad or tuna tartare). That isn't necessarily a problem, but the speed with which they were served was. We were served our whole meal before we even made it through half a bottle of wine. I would have preferred a more leisurely pace. Not sure the meal was worth $95 either. I would return, just not on Feb.14."

  • "Michael's is always a hit! Never disappointed with the quality of food and great outdoor dining experience. It's a Santa Monica institution everyone needs to experience at least once. Michael's, and Michael, are the best!"

  • "Our group sat in the open courtyard. You are surrounded by trees and greens and feel like you are in the middle of a tropical oasis. The food was fantastic. They have vegan, vegetarian and meat options. I had the vegan dish and my girlfriend had the fresh fish. We started with the cheese plate and the best part were the cocktails. OMG the mixologist is brilliant. We tasted his new beverages featured that day and the raspberry one is my favorite to date. Overall, it was amazing."

  • "We were lucky enough to score a last minute Saturday reservation at Michael's and even though that meant sitting on the upper level, overlooking the patio, we still had a great dinner and a great time. Food was spot on with the freshest possible oysters and lovely mignionette sauce, tasty fish tacos (although I could do without kale on tacos) and the classic Michael's burger. We also had superb grilled salmon filet which was cooked perfectly on the slightly medium rare side. Dessert which we almost skipped was sticky toffee pudding. Glad we didn't miss that and glad they could squeeze us in as it was another gem from Santa Monica's old reliable!"

  • "The staff is not well trained or attentive. The hostess sat us at a table that was broken! The waiter forgot to order our food but was apologetic. Nevertheless, we had to wait a long time in a very noisy restaurant."
    Dined on 2/8/2014
  • "unfortunately everything was off, service uneven and less than what you'd expect at such a place, and all of our dinners (6 of us) were brought to us either lukewarm or cold."

  • "Wait staff pleasant/friendly but had first inkling of trouble when asked if chef could alter plate set-up (dietary needs). Told "would ask" but chef stubborn (didn't appreciate inflexibility- poor management other restos have accommodated). Glitch 2: were brought wrong appetizer. Just before digging in realized mistake, pointed it out, & wait staff removed dish (tacky after leaving on table for awhile). Since we had ordered diff appetizer, had to wait for prep & delivery - threw off efficient delivery of food/courses. Some liked entrees quite well, others said only so/so. Dessert (similar to bread pudding) was tasty. Summary: decor & ambiance nice but kitchen erratic & service only fair (resto policy could be responsible for service gaps)."

  • "Excellent food - everything we had was delicious. A great selection of wines, although quite pricey, and a friendly wait staff. The layout of the chairs at the tables (for two) was, however, slightly awkward and we couldn't move our chairs around because the floor was broken up next to our table. We did hear several patrons complain about the restrooms - there is only one off of the dining area and the one upstairs is apparently off limits to "regular diners." Their strength is their food, which really was very good."

  • "Food tasted great. Service was slow. Drinks came slow from the bar. Food was slow from the kitchen."

  • "We sat outside on an overcrowded, exceptionally noisy patio. It took close to an hour to get the entree. The food was good but not outstanding. I will not return."
    Dined on 1/25/2014
  • "Service was terrible and lackadaisical - had to ask for wine list, waited too long for first course/appetizers. Michael introduced himself to the tables that night, which was very kind. Overall, the restaurant seems past it's prime. Very dated decor, menu, ambiance. Maybe this earns 4 stars from some people due to the patio space?"

  • "Dark pretty much says it all: lighting, food, surroundings. Michael's desperately needs some freshening up - everything is dim."

  • "Michaels has been reborn. Michael has come up with new concept, much more casual, but still refined and excellent cooking. The patio remains one of Santa Monica's best. The service is competent and Michael is always there to say hello and to keep things moving."

  • "Our waiter remembered us from our last visit more than 2 months ago AND remembered our wine preferences! Very attentive. Food is excellent as well. We always order the beef sliders and truffle fries."

  • "Still one of the best restaurants in the LA metro area. Michael has done an amazing job responding to changes in the dining market without sacrificing quality. A great dining experience in all respects."

  • "Whenever we have someone in from out of state, in this case Holland!, we go to Michael's. It NEVER disappoints. With its fabulous art collection visible everywhere, it's a special experience by one of the best California Cuisine artists anywhere. Michael McCarty has a great menu beautifully prepared, with new additions, fresh everything from the Santa Monica Farmer's Market. And best of all ifs the dining ambience... in a garden abundant with lush plants, twinkle lights, and even a Robert Graham sculpture. Quite exceptional: food, style, and California at its best!"

  • "The horrible service ruined what should have been a very pleasant experience. After being seated by the hostess, we were ignored for more than fifteen minutes. After several requests, a waiter finally arrived at our table. He asked whether we had questions about the menu. As we started to ask a couple of questions, he said that the was going to say "hello" to another group and disappeared for what seemed an interminable period of time. After our order was finally taken, we had another very long wait. We did not see our waiter so we asked another to check on our order. He came back and said that Michael, the owner, said that our food would be right out. Michael never came over to explain why the service was so poor. We'll never go back!"

  • "This was our first visit to Michael's since they changed their menu concept approximately one year ago. Michael's was known for very fine and expensive dining. The menu is now much more casual - think upscale bar food. We enjoyed everything we ordered and loved sitting on the patio. There are plenty of heaters, so although it was a chilly night, we were very comfortable. Looking forward to returning."

  • "Michael's still remains one of the best restaurants in the City. If you are looking for excellent food, intimate atmosphere and the increasingly hard to find low decibel level, this is the place for you."

  • "The food is Stiller seasonal and well executed. All the seafood was expertly prepared. The pizza we had as appetizer was thin crusted, with good mozzarella but not outstanding. Server iwas knowledgeable and helpful and the patio, with the tables not so close to each other, is still one of the nicest and it makes for a relaxed dinner with conversation easily flowing without shouting. The inside needs updating"

  • "Good was great but i didn't get my drink until about 15 min. After my boyfriend, the waiter came by and kept saying "they haven't brought your drink? I'm going to get right on it." Still took a whole to come after that. Also ordered a cheese plate and I had to ask the waiter to bring us the Marcona almonds that were listed on the menu but that we didn't get on our plate. We are not regulars at this restaurant, we were visiting from out of town. I've been there once before but I thought the service was pretty terrible for the price of the food. This is a higher end restaurant but the service was that of an Applebee's. I was pretty disappointed, the only thing that saved the experience was the food. It was great."

  • "After all these years the owner (Michael) still comes out to greet the patrons. The menu is limited but the food is excellent, and the service is warm and friendly. The covered patio is a lovely setting."

  • "It had been quite a few years since I visited Michael's in Santa Monica. Monday night's experience was disappointing, but I now realize it was not the restaurant's fault. When my guest and I arrived at the restaurant there was an event being held in the main dining area. We were thus seated in what is probably the bar area. This was supposed to be an important evening for me, and although it was not disastrous, it was not pleasant. I'm sure that if I had called the restaurant instead of going online, they would have told me that the main room was not available. And how would Open Table have known? It's a device. In the future it will be best to reserve a table the old fashioned way: by telephone."

  • "I love the new menu and the chef is quite talented and adventurous. Michael's has always been a favorite of mine and now it is affordable to a wider range of diners. The crowd at the bar for all -night happy hour is lively and fun. I always love to dine in the lush romantic garden and it never disappoints. It is always such a special touch that Michael comes around to each table to speak to his diners. Consistently delicious , never disappoints."
