Diner Reviews
  • "Lovely lunch with movers and shakers... fresh produce prepared carefully and properly. A treat."

  • "inconsistent service, mediocre food (certainly not worth the price), wine was priced at $13 a glass in the menu, but we were charged $30 per glass. Restaurant is clearly having trouble and managers hover over the wait staff, which makes them and the customers uncomfortable. Out-dated decor"

  • "Attentive staff, lovely menu. Perfect in most respects except the super loud and noisy table seated next to us. Not the restaurant'a fault but rude customer. Could have been sat firt they away but we coped."

  • "Michael's has become a dependable classic. I like it for breakfast or lunch. This time I went for an early dinner. Tables are spaced nicely, noise level is moderate, service very good and food is California cool."

  • "This restaurant has everything going for it. Great food, great ambiance, excellent service, but we were the only customers there on a Saturday night at 6:15. True, it's not in the heart of the theatre district, but a few other patrons dribbled in at around 7:45. I'm truly surprised because everything, including the price was just wonderful."

  • "Waiter neglected to bring requested item and seemed generally indifferent. Food quality: the appetizer was good-the rest of the meal (fish) was overcooked and oversalted and not tasty. For the poor quality, the price was much too high."

  • "Kids' cheeseburgers had no cheese. Lemonade for children was $9 and served in a wine glass. Food was quite tasty and the servers were really accommodating, but the atmosphere and decor left us feeling a little underwhelmed. Maybe this restaurant doesn't want to cater to families, which is fine and certainly seemed to be the case."

  • "Michael runs a great place. The place to be for a power b'fast or lunch!"

  • "Cozy with a nice menu and excellent. The food is great. It is surprisingly quiet for dinner."

  • "I've been going to Michael's for years, always with friends and my wife. This was the first time I went on a Saturday, alone. They took very good care of me and the food was creative and very good!"

  • "Upon entering, the hostess was friendly but seemed a bit astonished that people were walking in the door. She checked our coats and guided us to a table. The atmosphere indicated that the restaurant peaked in the late 80's or early 90's and never regained it's composure. (An indicator that the owner/manager may be in the same boat.) The food was adequate but uninspired. I had the risotto and it was gummy and underseasoned. Despite advertising a "mixologist" on the menu, the drinks from the bar tasted of cough syrup and did not enhance our experience at all. I kept thinking "If I were only a little more inebriated, this wouldn't be so bad". I was wrong. High point: coffee and creme brulee. Waiter (Michael) was friendly and attentive."

  • "The food was outstanding! We had many small plates and each was tasty and beautifully presented. Lobster bisque soup, bass ale onion rings, korean tacos, lump crab cakes, great salad, excellent red wines and a lovely pear-cherry crumble with cinnamon ice cream. We were friends who hadn't seen each other for a while and were able to chat comfortably - a very important feature."

  • "When attending City Center there are numbers choices nearby. This is among the best. A new American menu gives wide choices of tasty and well-prepared dining selections. The Restaurant Week selections offered an unusually large selection. I would repeat."

  • "What restaurant actually charges you for Bread? This one!!! Three dollars for each roll and the butter – seriously!"
    Dined on 3/7/2014
  • "everything a la carte and overpriced - "extras" especially steep - soda $6, coffee $6.66, tea $6, and bread for the table $3 per person. really? I have never been to a restaurant where they charged for the bread. :("

  • "Back in the day, going to dinner at Michael's was always a treat. I hadn't been there for dinner in a long time so my husband and I decided to go back for a Friday night dinner recently. What a disappointment. Either my standards have gone way up or this place has really gone downhill. The waitstaff was friendly but the spacing between appetizer (no bread served - not that I need it but it was conspicuously absent), entree and dessert was way too long. The salad and entree were ok, as was dessert but I had possibly the worst cappuccino I've had in a restaurant in a very long time. The interior is beginning to look run down and the place really needs a refresh. Definitely not worth an almost $300 tab. No plans to return any time soon."

  • "We tried Michael's for Restaurant Week. They had a nice menu - we enjoyed the carrot soup, tuna tartare, chicken and risotto. However, the evening ended on a sour note when we got the bill and realized the perils of not reading the fine print: a series of charges that left such a bad taste in our mouths that we'll never go back. We were charged for the roll we asked for (apparently they've thrown out a lot of bread, or that's what they told us). We were charged $20 for a half glass of wine (but, according to the manager, they are really large glasses - the menu shows 2 prices, the one you expect is apparently for a 3 oz taste). And to top things off, a cup of tea was $8 (for a tea bag). They might want to reconsider restaurant week."

  • "And Kim McCarty in house as well. Got our business done. Listened to the buzz. Loved the forsythia. I had my favorite beets. The guys ate hearty. Julie Corman"

  • "My friend and I went for the Restaurant Week menu, and we were both impressed by the quality of the food. The salad was fresh and delicious although the mustard dressing confused me. The steak was the best I've had in quite some time, the sauce that came with it was to die for. Smashed potatoes? yum. Even the broccoli was delicious and I don't say that often. It got busy, and the service could have been a bit more attentive, but everyone was friendly and helpful once you flag them down. The tea comes in a metal jug that looks like it would hold cream for your coffee. It's not loose leaf tea, it's pre-bagged. And it's $6. That's balls, to charge $6 for a bag of tea. We had 3 cups and it was as much as a happy hour tab. My only complaint."

  • "My 34 year old daughter and I came to Michael's for her 34th birthday breakfast. We had been urged to dine here by two different people before leaving Texas for our trip. Although the meal was a bit pricey, the food was incredible. Omelets and french toast! Doesn't sound exciting but the flavors were spot on. The vegetables, the cheeses, even the syrup were elevated a notch above the average breakfast fare. We will definitely recommend and return to Michael's on our next visit to NYC."

  • "As always Michael's delivers on its good name. The food was amazing and the service was excellent. Love the new menu with smaller portioned meals perfect for a business lunch."

  • "Well we went for lunch and I was pleased and surprised with the simplicity but very well made food. Had the Carrot soup which was excellent and the Branzino which was excellent. Service was good, I would say that the ambiance is very dated (not in a classical way) I would go again (they need to redo the bathrooms!)"

  • "This restaurant is tucked away in a little side street. I must've passed it dozens of times and when I saw it listed for Restaurant Week, I decided to give it a try. The food was quite good -- inventive, attractively presented, delicious. I thought the dessert was a little weak but I'll give it a pass since it was RW and I know that the costs are limited. Service was very attentive, informed and helpful, not intrusive. The setting is really lovely. The tables are well spaced. The walls are covered with interesting artwork. The flower arrangements enhance the look of the room. The bar area looks so comfortable; I can imagine returning there for a drink with friends. Great location for access to theater and cultural events."

  • "looking for a theatre-area restaurant, found Michael's on Open Table. Beautiful but unpretentious and reasonably priced...the food was excellent and all were pleased. The waitstaff was super nice, and treated us very well. Thank you so much."

  • "One of the best burgers I have had…made from ground rib eye! Service was outstanding. Waiter noticed that I was putting ice from my water glass into my drink and in a minute he arrived with a fresh glass of ice for me without being asked. Ambiance was lovely. A great place for lunch, dinner and good conversation."

  • "Food well-crafted and not too fussy; decor bright and colourful - very atmospheric; wine list comprehensive and reasonably priced; service attentive, but not smothering. Michael, proprietor, greets all guests and makes diners feel at home. Buzzes!!!"

  • "Quite surprised when Open Table allowed a 9:30 AM reservation that no one informed us that the kitchen doesn't accept orders after 9:30! Wow. In NYC? And why did Open Table not indicate that? So we had to rush to order, fortunately because we got there early. Word to the wise: if you think you are going to have a late breakfast at this restaurant, forget about it!"
    Dined on 1/24/2014
  • "Very slow service. Ordered a desert on the menu but told 5 min later that it was not available. I ordered another desert on the menu which took another 15 minutes. I think they went out to a bakery shop to get a piece of chocolate cake. absolutely lovely ambiance with stunning huge floral arrangements and bright contemporary art. On a snowy day, the large windows onto a beautiful courtyard made up for the very lackluster service and so -so food."

  • "Nice spot to see and be seen and overall quite pleasant. Service leaves much to be desired, which is surprising given the number of staff, but we were left for long periods without attention and some simple requests just forgotten. So enjoy the Ambience but be ready to wait a while for your goodies."

  • "They only made one mistake, but it was a buggy - my husband's main course came, but not mine. Quite a bit later they tried to give me an additional course (no, thank you) while waiting, and finally they had to be coaxed into making it up by reducing the bill. Once persuaded that something was due, they seem to have reduced the bill by quite a bit. That pleased my husband, who was really the only one who was upset. We had also asked for a quiet table. It was an early reservation, so that should have been easy. Instead they put as next to a pair of loud gentlemen, drinking, not dining. They did move us once we asked. The food was quite good - portions (except for french fries), relatively small."

  • "I ordered one of their daily specials,Dover Sole which of course is a delicacy. I think it was deep fried with a creamy sauce. The wonderful and subtle taste was overwhelmed by the frying and the sauce. Too bad. I have been there on a number of occasions where the food is excellent. I think I just ordered poorly."

  • "Disappointing service. Our waiter was clearly either untrained or not culturally exposed. In addition, she was not familiar with the menu. Our drinks took 20 mins to come. Appetizers were pretty good (crab cakes and Korean fried shrimp) but dinner was underwhelming. Brussels sprouts were great but other sides were plain and lacking. The table next to us must have not liked it either as they got up and left after 10 mins. Will not be returning and do not recommend."
