Generally good experience just
more expensive than expected."

seems like the menu and the
restaurant is in need of a refresh and update - seems stale"

What wonderful food! But the
waitstaff seems harried and disorganized, as if they were dropped from the sky into a restaurant. First, it took about 8 minutes for our server to appear. I had to ask if there were specials (there were). I had ordered iced tea, which came after my entree, once I asked for it a second time. The beet salad was amazing, nicely dressed, beautifully presented. My husband asked for cocktail sauce with his oysters, but it never came, until he asked again. There was a looong wait between courses. The crusted salmon was perfectly cooked and the sweet corn ravioli was heaven. I would walk 5 miles for the spinach and the grilled asparagus: crazy good. Please work on the service, people. Your kitchen richly deserves it."

I ordered the food from the
restaurant week menu. The salmon tartar, it melts in your mouth and flavor is excellent. The ribeye steak is delicious but the ice cream is a little to sweet for my taste. Their ambience is very suitable for couple."

Wonderful restaurant with all the
attributes you seek in the "finest"! All is great at Michael's and I would return every week if I could. Can not say enough about this marvelous "find"."
Dined on 8/14/2014
food was good, but I found them a
bit sneaky. I had to ask for a restaurant week menu, though it was a restaurant week. Menu did not have a price on it. They suggested to order a side dish for the burger, we did not realize that it will be $9 extra for a plate of stir fries. So be careful what you order, and ask questions, do not assume anything. They charge for bread too."

Michael is the consummate host -
he greeted every table, and added to the inviting atmosphere. The food was very good, and even with restaurant week menus, the portions were substantial."
Dined on 8/13/2014
I selected Michael's for a
Restaurant Week lunch meeting because the menu included items that my friend and I could eat on our restricted diets and also because of the location. The food was delicious, not especially inventive, but well-prepared and attractively presented. My favorite part of my meal was the carrot-ginger soup, which WAS inventive with its additions of yogurt and almonds. The staff was cordial and attentive, and Michael himself came to greet us as if we were special guests. I was most appreciative of the low noise level, due perhaps to the ample space between tables, that allowed us to have a quiet conversation."
Dined on 8/12/2014
Liked that you could get a small
glass of wine. But who charges extra for bread?"
Dined on 8/12/2014
Had the bulgogi burger, which was
awesome. Juicy and tasty."
Dined on 8/7/2014
Lovely room and food. Attentive
service. Bright and colorful dining room; good looking, well dressed crowd. (Nice art displayed!) Not big, or noisy. A pleasure."
Dined on 8/6/2014
The restaurant may be filled with
customers who are not regulars during restaurant week. This appears to allow service to become very unwelcoming and abrupt to others. The very good food does not compensate for the very poor service - long time to take orders, condescending attitude to reasonable questions (such as what is the difference between a regular Arnold Palmer and Michael's Arnold Palmer)."
Dined on 8/5/2014
We went to Michael's during
restaurant week and before going to a show at nearby Manhattan Theater Club. The pre-fixe dinner menu was very nice. The Salmon Tartar appetizer was particularly good. The room was lovely and the noise level was relatively low, good for being able to hear your dinner partners' conversations. All in all a very good meal."
Dined on 8/1/2014
The food and ambiance were
excellent. However, our server, when we asked a suggestion for a cold, pre-lunch drink suggested a rose'. We didn't ask the price but we were shocked to discover that while our lunch was a restaurant week bargain, the one glass of wine was $16.00, which brought our total cost up to $45 for lunch. While they are certainly entitled to charge what they want for wine, it might have been more gracious to indicate the cost of a "full" versus a "half" glass of a very expensive rose'. It seemed as though the expensive glass of wine was designed to offset the reasonable charge for a very pleasant, but not outstanding lunch."

Went for restaurant week. Enjoyed

Our experience here was "Very
Good" but in the context of a Restaurant Week meal it was "Outstanding"! Congrats to Michael's!"

A lovely meal with two significant
service flaws. We were served our check the instant our dessert plates were empty. On leaving, even staff that were standing nearby didn't thank us for coming, wish us a good night, or express a desire that we come again."

I went to Michael's during the
summer restaurant week promotion. I had a wonderful salad with olives which was absolutely divine followed by the sea bass which was very tasty, it 's one of those things that after you consume it you wish there was more. My desert choice was a fruit sorbet it served with fresh summer fruit. Prior to ordering I asked the waitress if I could have the sorbet without fruit and she indicated that would be fine. However, it was served with fruit, this was the only downside to my otherwise tasteful dining experience at Michael's."

We found this restaurant
participating and decided to give it a try. The food was great, waiter attentive but not overly so, ambiance and noise level were great for a fairly large space. Loved the floral arrangements and the artwork on the walls. We would definitely return and recommend to friends. Great neighborhood for fine food and quiet atmospherres."

Michael's is a lunch spot to see
and be seen.... it's a media haunt and the food is quite tasty.... my last two lunches there have been pretty amazing....."
Dined on 7/24/2014
I went to Michael's for restaurant
week and was disappointed. The options were not that good. I got the salmon tartare which was good, but the main course - ribeye was not good. it was a bit tough, small and blah. the sorbet was good. Overall, i was disappointed with the food. Isn't restaurant week to lure people in so that they will come back? i will definitely not go back."
Dined on 7/23/2014
Went for lunch with a co-worker
during restaurant week. Decided to order from the regular menu. The waitress questioned my order and I eventually ordered the crab cakes and cobb salad. 1st, a waiter brought another table's food to us and then there was no blue cheese in my cobb salad (it's the #1 ingredient on the menu). I asked my waiter and she was like "are you SURE? it's crumbled up in there...". I told her I was pretty sure there was no blue cheese and that I know how it tastes. She didn't apologize and asked if I wanted a side of blue cheese, to which I said, please! The food was good but overall, the service was slow, despite all of the waiters hanging around. Plus I had to stare at bronze male nudes the entire time I was eating..."

Me and my friend had lunch of the
Summer Restaurant Week Menu. All the food tasted very good. However, the wait person did not visit our table often. The dessert was different from what described on the menu, and served without any explanation."

Met a friend here for an early
breakfast prior to the start of a business conference. The location is ideal, the atmosphere is elegant and the service and food are excellent. We particularly enjoyed having so many options for a light meal--essentially spa cuisine. I had a similarly pleasant experience during a lunch in this restaurant several years ago. I would highly recommend Michael's for both breakfast and lunch, particularly if you are dining with business colleagues or are vacationing in New York sans children."

In addition to the California
cuisine menu, the food selection has an interesting Asian flair with sushi, Kobe beef tacos and other well-made dishes."

In town from New Orleans. We
found Michael's wonderfully tranquil but not staid. We have added it to our mid-town rotation in Manhattan--definitely a good value by mid-town standards. A friend from the Westchester suburbs met us there and was glad to discover it also. We tried a cross section of salads, small and large plates and shared them. All were well prepared and presented, with fresh ingredients and smart flavor combinations. Wine list was impressive, but we were disappointed when the Domaine Serene Willamette Valley Pinot Noir turned out to be the broader "Oregon" appellation instead. The sommelier was very cool about our reaction in sending it back and we had two moderately priced Sancerre bottles that were excellent."

This restaurant is a little jewel.
The food is truly delicious. I had the soft shell crabs which were lightly battered and completely perfect. Everyone else loved their food. Would return whenever I'm in the neighborhood for theatre."

We enjoyed the appetizers and
sharing platters. Each dish was unique and flavourful. The rate the food experience highly by international standards. True fusion by a master chef!"

start with great bar that had my
husband's favorite bulleit rye manhattan and the best mojito i ever had(not sure what's the secret - not too sweet - very minty - they strain it) - outstanding wines avail by the glass; we had delicious watermelon and stone fruit salad - perfectly dressed, delectable hamachi again perfect and lightly topped, fantastic broiled crab cakes and duck breast was great and perfectly prepared - loved the sauce - even the side of mashed pototos were so smooth and delicious and fresh tasting. It was quiet - we went at five-thirty after theater - very zen and lovely calming atmosphere - beautiful decor with great music and paintings; service could not be more friendly and accomodating yet not intrusive. Will be back!"

Michael's never fails to perform
above par. Good food, attentive service, congenial atmosphere, tables not so close together as to make talking difficult."

I know Michael's from Santa
Monica, so it was an easy choice for lunch before Cabaret at Studio 54. The dining room is clean and crisp with its modern art and floral arrangements. The menu is inventive, and my 3 course lunch was delicious in every way. The wine selection is very good, and the "by the glass" selection allowed me to taste several very good wines. Service was polished. I have no criticism except that it ends up being a bit expensive, but it is NYC after all. I enjoyed myself immensely."

This was our fourth time here. We
have always had a good experience. We felt like we were in the twilight zone. We couldn't get anyone to pay attention to us after being seated. The host did take our drink order and luckily we got in an order or oysters before he left. Finally after getting menus and the dissapointment of seeing hamburgers and pizza on it, I got up to ask for the check. We were there for an hour and never saw a waiter. As laughed as we walked out because no one bothered to ask us if everything was okay. I am not sure what happened that night. We had always had a great experience."
Dined on 6/12/2014
The wait staff was courteous and
explained things well--helping me select a draft beer from their short list that came closest to the Belgian brune I wanted--the waitress failed to mention that the special fish I ordered (a simple dover sole in a light butter-wine sauce) was almost twice as much as the most expensive entre on the menu. Two of the appetizers, a salmon tartarre and crab cakes were excellent and the crab cakes extraordinary. But the bib lettece with endives was so over-dressed, my wife barely touched it. The mains were uneven. A salad nicoise was plentiful and tasty, the duck tender and just the right bit gamey, the scallops broiled, fresh, but ordinary. Ditto my sole. Everything else about the place lives up to reputation."

Dropped in for dinner on a
Saturday night. There was only one other table and a few people at the bar. I ordered the barrata, a chopped salad and a glass of Rose. The chopped salad was $28 on the menu. When the salad came I noted that it was ridiculously big, too much for one person. The food was fine, the service curt at best. When I looked the bill, the salad was $36. I complained. The waitress told me that she placed the order at a entree portion. I told her I ordered the item on the menu. There was no mention of a "entree" option. All the rest of the apps topped off at the $17 level. Even most of the entree's were lower than the $28. My guess is that this is a way to pad the bill on a slow night, low tactics for a aging standard. "

I've been coming to Michael's on
both coasts for over a decade, and the food and service is consistently outstanding. Michael is the best host in America. "
Dined on 6/5/2014
There's a reason Michael's
continues to be packed. Michael himself presides and welcomes the diners, and his standards for food, service and ambiance are very high. Michael's is a midtown gem which never disappoints. "
Dined on 6/4/2014
Extreeeemely small portions, esp.
for the price. And the added charge of $5. per roll (not even a bread basket) was ludicrous. The menu also was limited in the entree offerings. Recommended wine by the glass was also very pricey. ($18) for a Sauvignon Blanc. We won't be back even though the room was attractive and well located."
Dined on 5/29/2014
The food is perfectly portioned
and the staff is more than professional. You might even get a chance to meet the big man himself, as we did."
Dined on 5/22/2014
I work around the corner, so
Michael's is my favorite spot for a relaxed lunch in a light, elegant atmosphere. The service is always exceptional and the staff are friendly."
Dined on 5/22/2014
A great restaurant is not a food
hall. It is an experience. Great restauranteurs attend to every detail of the experience. From the lovely greeting you receive on arrival, to the attention from the owner, to the curiosity of the wine steward and of course to the care and kindness of the wait staff, Michael's is a great experience."
