Diner Reviews
  • "I went to Michael's for restaurant week and was disappointed. The options were not that good. I got the salmon tartare which was good, but the main course - ribeye was not good. it was a bit tough, small and blah. the sorbet was good. Overall, i was disappointed with the food. Isn't restaurant week to lure people in so that they will come back? i will definitely not go back."

  • "Me and my friend had lunch of the Summer Restaurant Week Menu. All the food tasted very good. However, the wait person did not visit our table often. The dessert was different from what described on the menu, and served without any explanation."

  • "Met a friend here for an early breakfast prior to the start of a business conference. The location is ideal, the atmosphere is elegant and the service and food are excellent. We particularly enjoyed having so many options for a light meal--essentially spa cuisine. I had a similarly pleasant experience during a lunch in this restaurant several years ago. I would highly recommend Michael's for both breakfast and lunch, particularly if you are dining with business colleagues or are vacationing in New York sans children."

  • "In addition to the California cuisine menu, the food selection has an interesting Asian flair with sushi, Kobe beef tacos and other well-made dishes."

  • "In town from New Orleans. We found Michael's wonderfully tranquil but not staid. We have added it to our mid-town rotation in Manhattan--definitely a good value by mid-town standards. A friend from the Westchester suburbs met us there and was glad to discover it also. We tried a cross section of salads, small and large plates and shared them. All were well prepared and presented, with fresh ingredients and smart flavor combinations. Wine list was impressive, but we were disappointed when the Domaine Serene Willamette Valley Pinot Noir turned out to be the broader "Oregon" appellation instead. The sommelier was very cool about our reaction in sending it back and we had two moderately priced Sancerre bottles that were excellent."

  • "This restaurant is a little jewel. The food is truly delicious. I had the soft shell crabs which were lightly battered and completely perfect. Everyone else loved their food. Would return whenever I'm in the neighborhood for theatre."

  • "We enjoyed the appetizers and sharing platters. Each dish was unique and flavourful. The rate the food experience highly by international standards. True fusion by a master chef!"

  • "start with great bar that had my husband's favorite bulleit rye manhattan and the best mojito i ever had(not sure what's the secret - not too sweet - very minty - they strain it) - outstanding wines avail by the glass; we had delicious watermelon and stone fruit salad - perfectly dressed, delectable hamachi again perfect and lightly topped, fantastic broiled crab cakes and duck breast was great and perfectly prepared - loved the sauce - even the side of mashed pototos were so smooth and delicious and fresh tasting. It was quiet - we went at five-thirty after theater - very zen and lovely calming atmosphere - beautiful decor with great music and paintings; service could not be more friendly and accomodating yet not intrusive. Will be back!"

  • "Michael's never fails to perform above par. Good food, attentive service, congenial atmosphere, tables not so close together as to make talking difficult."

  • "I know Michael's from Santa Monica, so it was an easy choice for lunch before Cabaret at Studio 54. The dining room is clean and crisp with its modern art and floral arrangements. The menu is inventive, and my 3 course lunch was delicious in every way. The wine selection is very good, and the "by the glass" selection allowed me to taste several very good wines. Service was polished. I have no criticism except that it ends up being a bit expensive, but it is NYC after all. I enjoyed myself immensely."

  • "This was our fourth time here. We have always had a good experience. We felt like we were in the twilight zone. We couldn't get anyone to pay attention to us after being seated. The host did take our drink order and luckily we got in an order or oysters before he left. Finally after getting menus and the dissapointment of seeing hamburgers and pizza on it, I got up to ask for the check. We were there for an hour and never saw a waiter. As laughed as we walked out because no one bothered to ask us if everything was okay. I am not sure what happened that night. We had always had a great experience."

  • " The wait staff was courteous and explained things well--helping me select a draft beer from their short list that came closest to the Belgian brune I wanted--the waitress failed to mention that the special fish I ordered (a simple dover sole in a light butter-wine sauce) was almost twice as much as the most expensive entre on the menu. Two of the appetizers, a salmon tartarre and crab cakes were excellent and the crab cakes extraordinary. But the bib lettece with endives was so over-dressed, my wife barely touched it. The mains were uneven. A salad nicoise was plentiful and tasty, the duck tender and just the right bit gamey, the scallops broiled, fresh, but ordinary. Ditto my sole. Everything else about the place lives up to reputation."

  • "Dropped in for dinner on a Saturday night. There was only one other table and a few people at the bar. I ordered the barrata, a chopped salad and a glass of Rose. The chopped salad was $28 on the menu. When the salad came I noted that it was ridiculously big, too much for one person. The food was fine, the service curt at best. When I looked the bill, the salad was $36. I complained. The waitress told me that she placed the order at a entree portion. I told her I ordered the item on the menu. There was no mention of a "entree" option. All the rest of the apps topped off at the $17 level. Even most of the entree's were lower than the $28. My guess is that this is a way to pad the bill on a slow night, low tactics for a aging standard. "

  • "I've been coming to Michael's on both coasts for over a decade, and the food and service is consistently outstanding. Michael is the best host in America. "

  • "There's a reason Michael's continues to be packed. Michael himself presides and welcomes the diners, and his standards for food, service and ambiance are very high. Michael's is a midtown gem which never disappoints. "

  • "Extreeeemely small portions, esp. for the price. And the added charge of $5. per roll (not even a bread basket) was ludicrous. The menu also was limited in the entree offerings. Recommended wine by the glass was also very pricey. ($18) for a Sauvignon Blanc. We won't be back even though the room was attractive and well located."

  • "The food is perfectly portioned and the staff is more than professional. You might even get a chance to meet the big man himself, as we did."

  • "A great restaurant is not a food hall. It is an experience. Great restauranteurs attend to every detail of the experience. From the lovely greeting you receive on arrival, to the attention from the owner, to the curiosity of the wine steward and of course to the care and kindness of the wait staff, Michael's is a great experience."

  • "Charging for bread is ridiculous….restaurant is being cheap. Food was good. They give no vegetable with a $29 entree. Again, ridiculous. The owners are trying to ring up their register with any and all possibility that they can without shame."

  • "I eat out for lunch and dinner in New York almost every day. I think this may be the most underrated place for dinner -- food, ambiance, service, price -- that I know."

  • "Michael's offers white tablecloth elegance with reasonable prices compared to so many of the ridiculously expensive venues in the neighborhood. The relaxed Calufornia vibe, together with garden views also make it a more relaxed. The clientele give good people watching, and I've seen more than my share of celebrities here. It's easy to want to be a regular here."

  • "We dined here a few weeks ago in the evening and enjoyed a quiet dinner with good conversation food and service. This time was the opposite. Noise level was intolerable, service neglectful. Had to request bread twice and the measly rolls that came cold at midpoint of the main course were three dollars per person! Soft shell crabs overpriced and over salted. Stay away. "

  • "All of the food we had at dinner was way above average and the atmosphere was laid back/white tablecloth. The servers were disorganized and repeated asked us questions we had already answered. The owner checked in with us twice but appeared to have forgotten he had already done so. The kitchen is amazing but someone needs to mange the dining room more thoughtfully."

  • "We selected Michael's because it was near MOMA, and had good reviews. We were seated promptly at a nice table. We didn't want to be rushed but our waiter insisted that we order everything at once. We barely got our drinks, when the crab cakes (which was going to be an entree) appeared. We were told it was a mistake. I asked for a glass of wine and was not told that what I thought was house wine was $18. And we asked for bread...and each got a roll at $3 each! We felt that was strange....and not worth it. The food was good, but the portions were small to average. (We are not big eaters so that wasn't an issue, but had I been with my husband it would have been.) The meal was fine. Overpriced. I would not return nor recommend. "

  • "While the service was attentive the food was OK. I had ordered the NY Porterhouse steak medium rare and it was overcooked to medium well, it was quickly taken and another brought forth though the taste was fine though not great. My wife had the duck which was very good. We had been in boston earlier in the week and had several outstanding meals while in NY. Hence, my initial comment, given the overall tab of $175.00. One can find many other places. I could not recommend this place to another. It should be noted, Michael's provided a complimentary dessert and small box of cookies they were aware we were going to a show later. So the service was very good. "

  • "Always a wonderful experience at Michael's. The food is fresh and interesting, the staff is friendly, and if Michael is in the restaurant, he always stops by to say hello. We try to have lunch at Michael's every time we visit the city."

  • "Attentive staff, lovely menu. Perfect in most respects except the super loud and noisy table seated next to us. Not the restaurant'a fault but rude customer. Could have been sat firt they away but we coped."

  • "inconsistent service, mediocre food (certainly not worth the price), wine was priced at $13 a glass in the menu, but we were charged $30 per glass. Restaurant is clearly having trouble and managers hover over the wait staff, which makes them and the customers uncomfortable. Out-dated decor"

  • "This restaurant has everything going for it. Great food, great ambiance, excellent service, but we were the only customers there on a Saturday night at 6:15. True, it's not in the heart of the theatre district, but a few other patrons dribbled in at around 7:45. I'm truly surprised because everything, including the price was just wonderful."
