A word from Michael's Genuine Food & Drink
Michael’s Genuine Food & Drink is a showcase for the cuisine of Chef/Owner Michael Schwartz, with prices designed to encourage frequent dining. This unpretentious bistro seats 90 indoors and out, with another 14 seats at a handsome bar. Doubling as a casual neighborhood dining spot and a culinary destination, the bright, airy space in Miami’s evolving Design District showcases Schwartz’s trademark new American cuisine at prices designed to encourage frequent dining. Open daily for lunch and dinner, the menu is chock full of choices encouraging everything from a light bite to a multi-course feast. A quick glance at the menu and Michael's intentions for this restaurant are revealed. Notable is the frequency of the word homemade in the descriptions of dishes -- be it pasta, French fries or rabbit terrine. At the same time, Michael's takes advantage of the Chef’s decades-long relationships with winemakers to offer diners the opportunity to try a variety of wines at great value.Continued

Diner Reviews
  • "I have been going since they opened. The foods quality has held steady but the service from the maitre d' to the waiters has gone wayyyyy down hill. They basically ruined a Saturday night out for us from the minute we walked in until my final conversation with the manager on the way out. And that will make me think long and hard about ever going back. Sad."

  • "The place is nice, the ambience is superb, the food was "simple" but with very fresh ingredientes, excelent quality. The service was spotless."

  • "We went there based on Anthony Bourdain's recommendation and it was a great idea! We booked for a party of 4 for dinner, and got a nice table outside. You should try everything on the menu!"

  • "Perfectly prepared food every time! Most consistently good restaurant in Miami. And, it's really , really good!!!"

  • "half the menu items (ok, just 3-4) were not available, but everything was delicious. great for sharing, enjoyed every aspect of the meal. our server was very friendly, as were just about everyone we encountered (with the possible exception of the hostess who was still perfectly efficient so it's ok)."

  • "Brunch was great! Portions are smallish, so we had a chance to sample a lot of the items on the menu and all were outstanding. I opted for the macaroons, but next time I will get the homemade snickers! It looked awesome."

  • "This is my second time here and every time I come, I am able to share the plates with the people I am with. That way I can try more amazing dishes on this menu. This place is a gem"

  • "We sat outside on a gorgeous Feb night. Food was tasty (albeit a little gimmicky) . It's obvious that they take pride in what they serve here. The design district location was fun and interesting with a decidedly upscale vibe. Portions were definitely on the small side- Tapas is code word for "charge more give less" but we had a great time and enjoyed the food nonetheless. Wait staff were all really nice and I saved a bundle on my car insurance (lol) so all is good."

  • "Absolutely wonderful; 4th time here, and this time was the best! Have the beef short rib!!!"

  • "The food was so good we couldn't help but smack our lips. Wish we could have tried everything on the menu but limited ourselves (two of us) to our server's recommendations: wood roasted farm egg, ceviche, stracciatella, crispy rice cake, octopus, slow roasted pork shoulder, and brussels sprouts. All magnificent. As I write this now, I am salivating. Ambiance is chic casual. Sit in the front room with the open kitchen--has better energy than the back room. You might sit close to other diners, but the proximity adds to the happening feel of the place."

  • "One of our favorite restaurants on the town! Great service, the amazing home brew, the food and all desserts! Thx Michaels! I recomend!"

  • "I was brought up eating almost everything from the animal, including ear pigs. What a surprise to find ear pigs at MGFD ! And that is what this place is about, normal food some time ago presented port-modernly."

  • "The large pizza was delicious with short ribs! Who would have thought? Always love the cheese grits too. Took some out of town guests to Michaels Genuine, and wasn't disappointed. We enjoyed it all!"

  • "Everything about Michaels continues to be perfect, the food (i won't go into it all as I have before, the food and drinks) people watching scene, is all perfect. Best place to eat in the design district if not Miami/"

  • "Loved your restaurant, food was very tasty, fresh and creative. The service was great "Josua" did a great job making us feel welcomed. The outdoor ambience is nice, especially when it's cool."

  • "What a delightful day. Lunch at Michaels Genuine made it even better. We did have to wait for a table for about 15 minutes, even with a reservation. The main dining room was too noisy to enjoy a conversation with a friend I hadn't seen in months and there were no tables available outside. We ate in the room adjacent to the main dining room and it was perfect. The waiter was very attentive and the rock shrimp salad was just right. We topped it off with a cappuccino and wonderful conversation. The valet parking was an added ease and helped to make it the perfect afternoon."

  • "This is a must if you are in Miami. I stay in South beach. And I make it my business to get there. I went with my children and we had the very best time and the food was Amazing The service was delightful knowledgable about the menu and recommended the pork belly If you get there too late they might run out of the fish. But the steak was no second choice The best food on south Miami"

  • "MGFD not only never disappoints it trends in the opposite direction by exceeding all expectations. The pork belly and kimchee is one of my favorite dishes in the world! Every time I visit the Miami/Ft. Lauderdale area, I try to make a visit to Michael's. The food is simply excellent, the presentation good and not overly cheffy, the wait staff is friendly and the ambiance is energetic and buzzing. Like Michael, I'm originally from the Philadelphia area and we take our food seriously there. He ups the ante at MGFD and Miami is the fortunate recipient. Oh, did I say that Michael Schwartz is a genuinely nice guy too!"

  • "Food was excellent, drinks at bar during happy hour before we moved to the outdoor tables were great, Service was prompt friendly and knowledgeable. We had no problems and would go there again."

  • "We hard read the write ups for this restaurant and thought that it would be nice following a day at various design stores. The food was tasteless, bland and lacked anything special......ingredients included!!"
    Dined on 3/25/2014
  • "The food choices were eclectic, and we tried several smaller dishes. We enjoyed everything we tried, and felt the food was healthy. It definitely has a farm-to-table vibe. This was a 20th wedding anniversary dinner, and we were quite impressed. The atmosphere (we ate in the courtyard) was wonderful, beautiful and with great jazz accompaniment."

  • "The food rocks, and the service is masterful.I have to say the worst part are some of the awful guests inside who complain and whine about every little thing. I have zero complaints and nothing but good things to say. Get there early because the market fish is the best part and usually goes quickly! And for sure get the pork belly - decadent."

  • "BLT + Fried Egg on Ciabatta - made with home grown yellow tomatoes, it was very good, but a mess to eat (which we knew when we ordered it) and came with fries, which were good. Pastrami w/ shredded beets - unbelievable. The meat was perfectly seasoned and prepared, the bread was fresh and it soaked up all the juices from the pastrami. Also came with fries. Dessert - mini donuts with a raspberry jam and a type of vanilla pudding. Awesome, highly recommend. Both had a glass of white wine - the Sauvignon Blanc & the Chenin Blanc, both were good, the Chenin was too warm when it came out though."

  • "How charming, we thought, when we heard Michael’s changed its menu everyday depending on the fresh local ingredients available from the sea. We ordered the crostini, mussels in a roasted tomato-Harissa sauce and the wood-roasted catch of the day. The crostini was reasonably priced for three pieces of bread piled with pate and caramelized onion($6); the mussels at $18 were plentiful, the sauce runny and sharp, the grilled sourdough perfect to soak it up. But we were so disappointed by the fish: a small, white, bland piece in a capers-and-roasted lemon sauce. Hardly memorable and not at all filling. In fact, the blackened cod we ate at an uncool eatery was far more enjoyable than Michael's star dish. We won't be visiting again."

  • "the food was very good, as is typical of this "foodie" restaruant. I was a little disappointed in the service. It was my daughter's birthday and I had asked if we could sit outside as there were probably 10 open tables. It was early (7PM) but I was told that there were no tables. i understand the reservation process (it sometimes appears that there are many available tables when in fact there aren't) but I think they could have accomodated this request for a special evening with little hassle. In any event, we enjoyed the evening in spite of the lack of desire to work out the seating."

  • "This is one of my favorite Miami restaurants. They really know how to please a wide range of tastes without ever being boring. Michael's is definitely for the diners who don't love hotel food. And, the crowd always seems vibrant and happy."

  • "We celebrated a birthday the other night at Michael's Genuine. Everything was wonderful! Being that we were four we shared a number of the small and medium dishes. Our favorites were the wood roasted double yolk farm egg, the steamed mussels and the duck confit. The combinaton of ingredients were delicious! Our entrees were every bit as good. For dessert, the homemade doughnut and the grapefruit tart were both outstanding. Our server was knowledgeable and the entire staff was very attentive. Can't wait to go back and try some other dishes."

  • "Main courses (Short rib and pork shoulder) were just average. Unappetizing sauces overpowered both dishes."

  • "I was so excited to try this restaurant and was highly disappointed. The service was awesome. The food was nothing out of this world. The worst part was the wait. Close to 45 minutes for the appetizers! Then another 20 after that for the main dish. Definitely not the experience I thought I would have. Wouldn't recommend it and wouldn't go back."

  • "As always everything was terrific. There is so much to choose from and you want to try everything."

  • "I love the concept, but the food wasn't as great as I was expecting. My friends and I all liked our food but weren't blown away by it. Service was NOT good. Our waiter was weird and it was very hard to get his attention. He forgot one of our orders and everything took forever to come. Even when we asked for a tea or some honey it took ages for us to get it. But the ambiance was great and area is cool, so overall an ok experience. Not planning on going back."
    Dined on 3/9/2014
  • "The hostess was a bit obnoxious as if she was the coolest thing since sliced bread. Not a good feeling for just entering the restaurant. The food made up for her arrogance."

  • "My husband and I recently celebrated our anniversary with a dinner here. The service, the food and the outside tables were all outstanding. We tried several small and medium plates but the duck confit and pork belly were especially delicious. The homemade doughnuts for dessert were amazing. Our server, and I wish I could remember his name, was so entertaining and knowledgeable that he really made the night. The only negative was a customer who repeatedly came outside to smoke, sitting on a ledge among the outside tables, causing us and other outside diners to have to inhale her smoke. Too bad they can't come up with a better solution to keep the smokers away from diners. Otherwise, a wonderful evening and we will definitely return."
