Diner Reviews
  • "Michael is our favorite restaurant on the North Shore. The food is spectacular, the service impeccable, and the ambiance is perfect. Need I say more?"

  • "Michael has established itself as the best upscale restuarant on the North Shore, and one of the best in the Chicgao Metopolitan Area. We dine there every few months, and on this occasion we took advantage of a special Lenten seafood dinner on a Friday. The 4 course dinner included salmon and tuna tartare, shrimp and scallop appetizer, and lobster entree, each prepared in a unique manner that was amazing. The setting, the service, the quality of the food are outstanding. We used to reserve a trip to Michael for special occasions, but will go more often. Service is elegant but friendly, wines are diverse and affordable, and the overall experience is a peak one. Michael himself often visits tables, and he shows a lifetime of caring."

  • "As always, Michael's is a special find. For our 50th anniversary it was super special with 5 stars being inadequate in any of the categories listed."

  • "great service, food was excellent would recommend michaels for a special night out or just an enjoyable dinner with friends"

  • "We brought friends from out of town and they were thrilled. They said it had to be one of the best dining experiences they have ever had. Service was impeccable and the sommelier was quite helpful in selecting the appropriate wines with our courses."

  • "The customer comes first at Michael - outstanding food, attentive but unobtrusive service, quietly elegant, and quiet enough to have a conversation without straining. Our party of four had a difficult time choosing from among the many delicious-sounding selections. We were all pleased with each of our selections. Optional 3- and 4-course fixed price for the full menu are a plus. Definitely value received."

  • "We had the pre-fix menu which had good choices for appetizers, mains and desserts. I started with a good sized arugala salad with beets and nuts which to me was light and tasty. My date started with a mushroom artichoke course that had a nice balanced flavor and texture. We had a trout dish and sea bass. Both were excellently prepared with a crisp skin and tender flavorful meat. I asked for low sodium and that turned out perfect. The main servers were very attentive and polite, very good overall. The bread and water person was the only short fall here, heavy handed, rushed actions (almost tossing bread on the plates, splashing water, dropping off a dish and rumbling as he walked away). Price is reasonable for the high quality."

  • "We have been to this restaurant twice, and in spite of an interesting menu and good service, the execution is sadly inconsistent at best. It aims too high for its ability to execute. It should consider cutting its menu in half and simplify, to do fewer things really well. The salmon, for example, was too grilled with an off flavor, and it was (not intentionally) cold. The artichoke appetizer was fine but the creme brulee merely ok. Others' soulfes looked better. The creme brulee is emblematic: rather than changing a classic French recipe with apples, they would do far better to execute a very good, simple creme brulee."

  • "Easily one of my favorite restaurants, rivaling any fine dining in the city. The service is gracious and friendly, and the food is delicious. I could make an entire meal of the gougeres amuse and a glass of pinot! Don't miss the mushroom and artichoke terrine appetizer, my husband swears by the duo of beef entrée, and the warm praline soufflé is a must."

  • "We just enjoyed our anniversary dinner there. Although we had been once before with friends, we did not really appreciate what a great spot it is. Michael's is surely the finest dining between Evanston and Lake Forest; in fact probably better than any in Evanston too. The appetizers, salads, entrees and desserts are imaginative, creative while avoiding the temptation to go over the top. Here you can dine well without feeling as a contestant on Survivor. Service is suburban perfect, completely attentive without being stuffy. The wine list was varied and thoughtful and not overpriced. We won't wait for a special occasion next time."

  • "a couple of changes in the menu offered duckx2 as the venison season appears over. outstanding breast and a slightly over thymed galantine. house smoked salmon presented with gnocchi. Berkshire chop was again a winner. had my sweetbread fix and a lovely glass of a 2009 red described as "brilliant" and indeed it was. always a nice evening. awaiting the spring menu rather impatiently."

  • "My wife and I celebrated our anniversary, meal was very good but the service lacked something. Never given another roll after first was eaten or asked, out of the first wine selected and received check without asking about coffee. Did ask and were not charged."

  • "But why so serious? The place is like a morgue with everyone whispering. One would feel quite out of place if it were a real dinner celebration! Would love a more vibrant feeling."

  • "My wife and I have eaten at some very fine restaurants, and we agreed the food at Michael was as good as we ever had. Outstanding! The portions served were larger than we expected, certainly larger than most fine dining restaurants. The service was excellent. We will return."

  • "This is the second time I am leaving the review. We really wanted to come back to this place, and here again, Michael is an awesome place to have upscale meal. It was during the weekdays so the restaurant was quiet. However, the server was very attentive and we enjoyed every single dish very much. For the second bottle, we brought our own wine. I do not think they charged corkage fee. (I maybe wrong.) I cannot wait to come back again soon!"

  • "Michael is just a wonderful restaurant. My wife and I first discovered chef Michael at a dinner he mentored at Kendall College years ago. That meal was excellent. And it's why we were so happy when he opened restaurant Michael. The room is small, elegant without being stuffy. The staff provide excellent service without being obsequious. And the food? We so look forward to it that we get almost as much pleasure from the anticipation as from the meals themselves. On our most recent visit I was jealous of my wife's spectacular diver scallop appetizer (thankfully, she shares), and then floored by my grilled bison topped with a braised short rib ravioli. The meal is still vivid in my mind, three days later. What more can I say?"

  • "Went for to Michael for Valentines Day. Overall, was very satisfied with the food and the service. Several items on the tasting menu were outstanding, like the bison and lobster ravioli. Ambiance is very nice overall, but certain parts of the restaurant look dated and out of sync with the atmosphere (like the ugly ceiling tile, bar, and bathrooms). Overall, a great spot for a romantic dinner."

  • "Service was great, and food was terrific. Menu is a bit pricey, but it is worth the splurge for a special occasion"

  • "The service at this restaurant was very good. We only dined there once, and would rate the entrees OK, but the dessert was superb. It is worth another visit."
    Dined on 2/16/2014
  • "Ambiance was nice. The food was interesting but not fantastic. And the service was mediocre at best. Overall the value at this restaurant was about a two star of five. I think that this restaurant could be dramatically improved by reducing the number of tables and by improving the attitudes and attentiveness of the servers. Because I've only dined there once, it's difficult for me to criticize the menu. But, purely based on value, if I had to spend my money here or somewhere else, the discriminators at Michael's are making the case."

  • "We loved the food... very fine European cuisine. Excellent service...didn't miss a thing! Very attentive but not intrusive."

  • "I am happy to know there is a place of this quality outside the city. We really enjoyed the experience and I am sure will be back. Also surprisingly nice selection for a vegetarian!"

  • "If there is one restaurant north of the city that can compete with the best of Chicago's excellent restaurant offerings, it's Michael. I'd rather be at Michael than any other place: for superb food, for unpretentious--but excellent--service, for ambiance and quietude and, most importantly, for conversation. Besides that, the clientele know how to behave and don't dress like teenagers. If you want loud and obnoxious and big portions and trendiness, please, please, please, go someplace else and let this elegant gem be "The Civilized Experience of the North Shore"."

  • "Food as always was wonderful. Service again was spot on. Lighting makes me look good ;). Lobster, crab and shrimp cassoulet was THE best. Home cured salmon rosette perfect. Venison and Berkshire pork, yum. Praline soufflé and citron cream roll finished nicely. Wine suggestion was perfect. Sauces with the entrees were awesome. Groupon not an issue. We come with groupon and without, same great experience. Highly recommend for wonderful fine dining but not stuffy or pretentious."

  • "My husband and I have been wanting to try Michael's for a long time. We had heard it was fabulous and we were not disappointed. The food was really delicious. We were not super hungry and decided to order light fare. The salmon tartar was super fresh and full of flavor . The classic salad Lyonnaise was really, really good. My husband had the risotto and loved it! We would definitely go back to try out the other dishes. The service was fantastic. Can't say enough. We enjoyed Michael's!"

  • "Michael remains the best restaurant on the North Shore and one of the very best in the entire Chicago area. This is a place for serious dining - the ambiance is first class, the service extremely professional and the cuisine absolutely outstanding. And, the value proposition is great. We come here often and I was really happy with some new items on the menu, which were fabulous. Thanks, Michael!"

  • "My husband and I have dined at Michael often over the years. Never have we been less than satisfied. From the notable and high value wine choices through the last bite of desert, this restaurant is wonderful. Artichoke and wild mushroom terine is absolutely perfect."
    Dined on 2/8/2014
  • "We visited Michael a couple years earlier and loved it, so we selected it as the destination for my husband's birthday dinner, over several other comparable level restaurants we visit for special nights out. To our surprise, we both found our entrees significantly over-seasoned; far more salt than was necessary. (and we did not order the same thing, so this was the case with 2 different entrees) We just didn't get the "mmmmm" factor we were expecting. Considering the cost of an evening there, we most likely won't want to take a chance and return."

  • "This is our second time here and we were mostly pleased. Would recommend it as long as you can afford the prices. Trout was quite small and little to eat for someone with a big appetite. My family liked their beef tenderloin and Venison. Chocolate souffle was very good."

  • "I've been to Michael about 5 times now - twice in the past two months - and it's always a wonderful experience. The food is excellent and changes seasonally. The decor is elegant and understated, and the place is quiet - you can actually hold a conversation without raising your voice - a rarity these days. Service is professional and unobtrusive, but they'll consult with you on food selections or wine if you wish. The sommelier is very helpful. A good selection of wines, including by the glass. Last visit, I had the orange dusted scallops for an appetizer (superb), the baby arugula salad with lavender-infused beets (yes!), and the squab with duck pithivier. The sommelier suggested excellent for wine pairings. I'll be back!"

  • "My wife and I came here after a Writer's Theatre Saturday matinee for dinner. It was our first time here and we had a wonderful evening. She had the truffled potato soup followed by the venison. She reported the soup to be very good while the venison was spectacular (I should know, I ate about 1/3 of it). I had the cassoullette of scallops, shrimp, lobster followed by the Berkshire pork chop. Both were excellent. Big chunks of delicious lobster in the cassoullette and the pork chop was great. The venison probably stole the show though. Desserts rounded off an excellent dinner (fabulous profiteroles). Service was spot on. The wine list was very well put together and the sommelier most helpful. Decor is nice, restrained, comfortable."
