The recipient of a 2012 and 2013 Michelin Star, Three-and-A-Half Stars from The San Francisco Chronicle's Michael Bauer and the title of Esquire's Restaurant of the Year 2011, MICHAEL MINA San Francisco is the eponymous signature restaurant featuring Michael Mina’s sensibilities with Japanese ingredients and French influence.The restaurant opened in 2010 in the same location (formerly Aqua) and city where Mina first established his culinary reputation 20 years ago.

In the kitchen, Executive Chef Ron Siegel works side by side with Michael Mina to present an ever-changing a la carte menu featuring the finest ingredients the Bay Area has to offer. Japanese for "Dueling," the Ketto Tasting Menu presents guests with a one-of-a-kind, multi-course dining experience where each diner of a party recieves a different dish, often composed of the same main ingredient, but using vastly different flavors and cooking techniques.

From the time you walk in the door, order from the menu, see the food for the first time, taste the food for the first time, your experience will never be the same. Each aspect has been thought about ahead of time, the staff is well organized to pay attention to everything happening during the meal. The food, from concept to presentation, sets the tone for the enjoyment of the actual taste. Dessert was a small reminder of how creativity can accent actual taste as well. Don't think that this is an inexpensive meal, because it isn't. However what you get in return for what you pay, is what makes the meal a Memorable Dining Experience."

  • "Just spent a week in San Francisco and this was unfortunately our only poor experience. Relative to all of our other dining experiences (of which Quince was a particular highlight), Michael Mina was significantly below par in all categories. Food was average, at best, and the service was astoundingly bad for a restaurant that purports to be of that level of quality. Waiter was completely uninspired and offered no comment or colour on the menu and the middle-aged fellow working the door was astonishingly impolite. Should have went with our instincts and left before dining with so many better options in San Francisco..."

  • "The food, service and ambiance were great. We celebrated my fiancé's birthday, and the staff made him and us feel very special. It unfortunately wasn't the best (or even close to the best). We ordered the ketto menu and a bottle recommended by the sommelier. The food was good, but not worth it. For it's price and brand, I expected more innovative flavors. The salmon/halibut/cooked fish dish fell so flat. We begrudgingly finished our dishes. If I were to come back (unlikely), I'd order ala carte. Sorry Michael Mina, you're no Commis."

  • "This was a very disappointing experience. Had planned a great dinner with old friends who we often dined with at this location when it was Aqua. However, it was so LOUD as to make conversation impossible. On top of no noise buffer, there was unnecessary music. Food was just OK. Certainly not up to the standards of his other restaurants and not in keeping with the prices. We will not be going back."

  • "I took my son here for a birthday celebration. He is a foodie and the Japanese/French fusion offerings was an attraction. We had the chef's 9 course menu which was a perfect way to sample a vast array of samplings. It was a dual pairing so we would each eat half and trade - sometimes this was difficult as the portions weren't always sharable but we made it work. Also, Valet parking is $10 - good option if you have a car."

Only real complaint is that the music selection is totally our of whack with the dining experience being offered. Loved the 4 course surprise lunch menu. It would be nice if there were a lunch option similar to evening valet price to reduce the hefty price of nearby garage parking for those of us who come only to dine and do not have a need to park for work or otherwise."

  • "The waiter had no knack for telling when he was wanted or not and would interrupt conversations. The food was not cooked well -- I ordered the steak medium rare and it was more raw than normal in the inside and still chewy / overcooked on outside. The broth for the shabu shabu (hot pot) that was ordered was too cold to actually cook the meat -- this is a timing thing that is fairly simple to coordinate when bringing out all the entrees together and they failed pretty miserably on this front. They did at least take the shabu shabu off the bill which was appreciated."

  • "Had an early evening reservation coming from the Central time zone. Arrived early and the restaurant was able to seat us 15 minutes before our reservation. Service was very good. Not too much attention but always right there for our needs. We enjoyed the halibut and the ribeye, which arrived well-trimmed and sliced. Very nice wine list - we enjoyed a Cobb Pinot Noir."

  • "We had an amazing dinner at Michael Mina. The food was wonderful, with lots of "extras" provided by the chef, to make the evening a real treat. But I have to write about the service - it was the best I've ever had. My dining companion is allergic to gluten, and the chef, waitress and all of the servers took amazing care of her. They considered whether every dish had gluten, and either suggested another dish or, in most cases, made wonderful alterations to the dish, to take out the gluten. The dessert tasting menu was specially altered to provide for gluten free desserts that she really enjoyed. What a wonderful night."

  • "We ordered the tasting menu, and each and every morsel was satisfying, some more remarkable than others. The duck breast was out of this world and the wine pairings phenomenal. My only misgiving was that the restaurant knowingly accepted an order for a six course meal at 8pm, then systematically rushed you through the courses so they could close on time. Let me be clear: the food was exceptional but the experience was lacking. The server could have offered a shorter alternative knowing that there wasn't enough time to take pleasure in because we literally had to shove food in our faces to complete the transaction in time. At the end of the meal, my stomach was satisfied, but I was left wanting for the dining experience I so paid for."

  • "I went to Michael Mina for the first time for my birthday this year. I told them ahead of time it was my birthday, and they had a card waiting for me signed by the GM thanking me for spending my birthday day there. I thought that was a nice touch. My date is a vegetarian, and they don't have any vegetarian options, so they put a pasta dish together for him anyway! The server was extremely accommodating. I asked for his suggestion, which was the duck. I've had duck before and while I like the flavor, it tends to be too fatty for me. This duck was different. The skin was perfectly crispy, with a thin layer of fat that wasn't slimy or chewy. Just perfectly cook and absolutely delicious. We also had a table by the window which was nice."

  • "The Service: Stellar. First-class at every step along the way. Every item was beautifully presented and brought in a timely fashion by knowledgeable servers. The Drinks: The best cocktail I've had in San Francisco yet. Their "On a Whim" option lets you specify some element you're looking for in a drink, and you're quickly brought a creative, delicious concoction which in my case ended up being perfect. The Food: Everything is A+. The Tuna Tartare flavors blend together perfectly, and the Short Rib Tortelloni was exactly al dente and delicious. The Middle Course of melt-in-your-mouth Japanese A5 Wagyu beef may have been my favorite thing we ate. The Ribeye was exquisite and tender. Finally, every dessert was world class. Verdict: Perfect"

The knowledgeable waiter answered our questions about the menus, voluntarily asked about any allergies we might have, and then flawlessly ensured all food items were prepared to our request s. The magic started as we entered the door, and it extended through a hand-written birthday note from the management, wonderful drinks made to suit individual whims, the most delicate interplay of food flavors paired on each plate, impeccable wait service ever so attentive without hovering, and the most delightful conversations. How can we not return? This dining experience ranks among the very best to be had anywhere."

  • "Very disappointed. Wasted $1000+ for 3 of us. Very arrogant server with no knowledge. We started with Kir Royal. The server said nice raspberry cocktail! Glass was dirty, finger prints on, too much lemon zest destroyed crème de cassis flavor. We asked start with 1 portion of caviar, then 3 appetizers, but the server force us to order more caviar which we didn't need. We did not want to argue on dinner table, so ordered sashimi plate and caviar. Sashimi was smelly, and the caviar plate looks 5-6 portion. We believed she ordered 3 portion even we ordered one. Tuna tartar was fishy and the server mixed on the table really ugly, it looked like dog food and totally lost appetite. Duck was over cooked and chewy because not cleaned. Worst exp "

  • "This was our first night in San Francisco to start off our honeymoon. I friend highly recommended this restaurant and we trust his judgement. Michael Mina did not disappoint. The service was professional, courteous, and meticulous; simple things like making sure we had our water topped up to explaining our dishes to us made the whole experience top-notch. Of course, the food was great too! Everything was fresh, perfectly seasoned, and looked visually stunning. My only complaint is I wish the portion sizes were just a wee bigger but nothing a couple of glasses of Cali wine can't fill. ;) Thank you Michael Mina and staff for kicking off our honeymoon in an awesome way."

  • "We have been to Michael Mina before at a different location where it was a more enjoyable experience. This time it was less than expected. For such an expensive meal we should have been able to hear our conversation. While the food was good the portions were small. A bean salad consisted of 6 string beans (no kidding, I counted them as I was so surprised) a couple lettuce leaves, 2 slivers of avacado for $20. The room was too noisy. We couldn't hear each other unless we raised our voices. Wait staff interrupted our conversation to describe the food. So irritating. It was over priced for this dining experience"

  • "We wanted to choose carefully, as it was our wedding anniversary, and the night at Michael Mina was special from start to finish. They gave us a quiet corner table, welcomed us with a happy anniversary card, and everyone from the host, to the manager, to the server all wished us a happy anniversary. The food was creative and simply magnificent - I can highly recommend both the lobster risotto starter and the lamb entree as being out of this world. The cocktail list and wine list offer fantastic pairings for the food as well. The service was impeccable - attentive without being intrusive, and everything paced perfectly. I can't believe how long it took me to get to this restaurant, and I will definitely be back. "

  • "Very small plates, excellent food. My boyfriend and I shared everything: Toro(first time and it was great!) Shabu shabu(yum) Braised shortrib tortellini (yum yum) Beet salad(small and they forgot the avocado) Soft shell crab(didn't care for it) Salmon(fabulous) Duck(boyfriend loved it) The bread they serve is sweet and savory! The ricotta cheese and honey, oh man, so wonderful! Service was very slow. Our food took forever to come out. We received our first dish and then we waiting a good 25 minutes until the next appetizer came out. The next one came out faster but still waited a good amount of time. Staff was friendly and cracked jokes. Very knowledgeable about the food and gave great recommendations. "

  • "what a fantastic restaurant!! i dined with a friend and it was one of the best evenings i've ever had. every course was cooked perfectly and the service was amazing. the staff was well informed and accommodating. keep in mind its a foodie joint, not for the faint of heart. you need to really love every aspect of fine dining, if not, this isn't your thing. that being said, it was a wonderful experience and i really enjoyed it!"

  • "It is so true that the room is LOUD! You can't even hear yourself think. Had the signature Tuna Tartare and it was missing flavor, an acid like lemon or ponzu would have helped. We had just arrived from Toronto that day and were 3 hours behind and tired so we did not want a heavy meal. You could tell that the staff was not happy that we didn't do the tasting or the dueling menues. Service should ALWAYS be outstanding but it was sub par. And they have way too many staff running around, you feel like they want to trample you. Better places to eat in this city. Choose somewhere else. "

  • "The food was incredible, outstanding, and delicious. The restaurant was management poorly. We did not get seated until close to 10pm for a 9pm reservation. To paint a prefect scene, seated to our left was the manager from another Mina's location and they ended up cancelling their entre' order because they were seated so late and it took forever for their initial courses to come out. The gentleman was obviously disgusted and the manger of this location comped him. The wait staff were okay and pleasant but not terribly professional. The restaurant was very loud and the ambiance was nothing to note, neither great nor terrible. Mr. Mina's recipes are to die for but I would save your time and money and bypass the San Fran location."
