  • B-day dinner at Michael Mina
    OpenTable Diner Since 2011

We came here for a b-day dinner on a Sat night. There was a b-day card from the staff on the table which was very nice and much appreciated. For dinner, we ordered the suckling pig & seafood risotto as starting courses. Then we got Liberty farm duck and the black cod. Everything was great except for the black cod which was only so-so. We also got the dessert flight which consists of ~5 different dessert per person. It was something good to try once but would not order again b/c it's just too much sweets all at once. They forgot to put a candle on the dessert but overall service was still very nice and water never sat half filled for more than 2mins or so. Would definitely dine at Michael Mina again

Two years ago we enjoyed a wonderful meal at Michael Mina, then a sophisticated and trendy restaurant. My experience this week was walking in at 6:30 into a scene with many empty tables--a surprise! While food was still wonderful, the decibel level from the bar crowd was so ridiculous that we had to yell at each other to be heard. For the price you pay (with a WAY over-priced wine list) we would have expected a wonderful evening. Management seemed sympathetic but were "helpless" to fix the problem. Apparently, they are planning a new renovation in October to specifically address the noise issue. Hope it works, but I for one likely won't be there to experience it, such was the overall "flop" and my disappointment in my special evening.

Have not eaten at this location since Aqua. Food/Service was excellent. Prices a bit over the top even for exquisite cuisine. Starters averaged $20 and entrees $40+. Drink prices also quite pricey (wine by the glass starts at $14). Great for special occasions!

This might be the best restaurant I've ever been. The space is beautiful; the atmosphere is relaxing yet elegant. The food was excellent and the service was definitely superior to any restaurant I've been. I planned dinner here for my husband's 40th birthday and the entire staff made our experience special and enjoyable. I love that the staff was approachable and not pretentious. I would absolutely recommend MICHAEL MINA to anyone visiting San Francisco and for the locals too.

We had nice drinks, then appetizers, wine, then Entrees. 3 guests. Mine: King salmon. $48. Portion was unusually small. Maybe 4/5 bites. I asked waiter if normal portion. He said yes it was six ounces. ( neither of us had a scale at moment. ) He seemed genuinely interested in making me happy. He offered an accompaniment. I go with the tartare. It was quick. Bill came. He charged me for 3 tartare. We only ordered one earlier as an appetizer for another guest. He seemed to too quickly recognize his mistake. He then charged me for two. I expected ( rightly or wrongly ) not to be charged for the accompaniment with my salmon. ( bringing grand total for my salmon entree to $68 ). Unusual approach I gave good tip anyway.

Not much of a creative, innovative-chef presence here anymore. Good food. Way overpriced because of the name. Service was oddly slow and inattentive. It is a shame to see a great chef cash it in to collect royalty checks.

I've eaten here maybe 4 times, and this last time I wasn't overwhelmed. The Toro and the Tuna Tartare were fine, but the heirloom tomato salad was tasteless. To their credit, I was not charged for the salad. Not sure I'm rushing back here on my next trip to SF.

My husband and I were very disappointed in the service. We got there at 7:30 for our 7:45 reservation and were seated immediately and we ordered the 9 course menu. The food was wonderful but the time between courses was inordinately long. A couple came in 45 minutes after us and ordered the same menu and they were serving them the 9 courses before us. We did not order anything other then the 9 courses so why they got service before us is a mystery. We knew 9 courses would take a while but the timing was crazy, we waited 25 minutes for some of the courses then the fowl and meat course came within 5 of each other. I would hesitate to come back with this kind of service. Or I guess avoid Friday nights.

We were VERY disappointed. After informing waiter of a severe stone fruit allergy, I was quite surprised to have stone fruits served on 2 of the dishes (stone fruit not mentioned in the dishes' descriptions). We had an heirloom tomato salad that was pedestrian at best; the tomatoes were far from ripe. My lobster potpie, a signature dish @ $70, was supposed to be made from the meat of a 1 1/2 lb. lobster. I needed a microscope to find the meat. Best part of the meal was their bread. I would not return.

I'd heard about this place for years as it's often referred to as a top restaurant in SF, but based on my recent experience there I can't agree. There too many places where I've had a much better experience. The Asian influenced menu was interesting enough, but not that memorable although the food was prepared well. However, the service was disappointing for a place at this price-point....spilled items, a hair found in the food, over-zealous buss staff who kept trying to clean plates before we were both done, etc. with so many superior options in SF I'd be hard-pressed to come back.

It was the perfect birthday dinner that we will come back and just have a typical Thursday night dinner there again. Highly recommend!

I'd made our reservations online and placed a note that it would be my boyfriend's birthday, and if there was anything they could do to make it a little extra special, it'd be greatly appreciated. The hostess wished him a Happy Birthday at the door, there was a b-day card from the GM waiting on our table, every server gave their best wishes, and they brought out a small cake with a candle (but thankfully no cheesy, awful singing was involved). He was tickled. We ordered the 9 Course Ketto Menu. Absolutely amazing. Every bite had flavors that I'd never experienced before. I will definitely be recommending this restaurant to friends!

Celebrated a birthday with the Ketto tasting. Meal started off wonderfully, with an assortment of carefully thought out hors d'oeveres. Our first course came without requested wine pairings. The waiter never bothered to check on our courses and was a huge disappointment. My fish course was so dry that it was inedible. Restaurant's response to my not enjoying a odd tasting white wine pairing with quail was to bring two different wines for the rest of the night to the table. room temperature was uncomfortably cold for the first two hours. Place was much too noisy, driven by overhead music. All in all, a disappointment for the greater than $500 bill. Attention to detail USED to be important to Michael. Now it's about revenue.

The reality is that only once or twice in a five year span would you come across places like the ones above! These wont necessarily be the Michelin 3 stars, or the best in NYC/SF/HK that you end up dining at. However these will be the ones that have essentially the same attributes Michael Mina- SF has i.e. Amazing food Adorable hospitality Breathtaking service AND THE KIND OF POSITIVITY THAT MAKES THE MOST SPECIAL OCCASION EXTRA SPECIAL! We google maps and still couldn't find the dang restaurant. If it weren't for the neon lights next door we would had been late for our reservation. I made a bday reservation and we arrived on time and studied the menu and read reviews beforehand. When I arrived I instantly noticed it was loud, barely could hear the server. Our bread was burnt, the veggies were ok similar to HomeTown Buffet and my lamb; I've had better during Easter at my Nona's. I can tell from other patrons checking out my romp when I walked to/from the bathroom; they were even with their dates and still ck'd out my romp! Geez!!! I needed to order a martini to wash down the taste of my dates so-called "lobster soup" .. Look more like chicken&Stars.

I can find the same quality of food (I had a steak and my husband had duck) at a restaurant that is half the price. Maybe I was there during a bad night? I'm not sure. They try to add values by giving us things we didn't ask for: finger foods and little desserts. Although, those little dishes are more special than the entrées we ordered. I did especially loved their spreads for the bread. The salad was also interesting. Perhaps because those starters set my expectation so high that it crashed hard when the entrées came out.
