A word from Mia Francesca
Mia Francesca features the zesty, earthy cuisine of Rome and the surrounding areas of Tuscany, Umbria and Lazio. It was one of the first restaurants in Chicago to encourage the lively art of dining with a contemporary, casually sophisticated trattoria ambiance, simple, rustic cooking, friendly service and fair prices. The space, originally a candy store, was renovated in 1992 with painstaking attention devoted to preserving as many of the original fixtures as possible. Sleek lines are softened by warm woods; the well-lit dining rooms reflect the animation of the diners; striking black and white photographs of rural Italian life by
Paul Elledge line the walls to create a comfortable, decidedly urban setting. Waiting for a table at the beautiful antique bar is part of the charm of Mia Francesca. The plush upstairs dining room can be reserved for private events, as can the more intimate coachhouse tucked away behind the restaurant.

  • "I brought my family and friends - a party of 5 - here Friday night. Everyone was pleased with their meals. I was able to get a reservation for 7 pm a few hours before, which was a pleasant surprise. Our waiter provided helpful recommendations and his service was timely and non-interruptive."

  • "Every time I come in from New York, I go to Mia Francesca's. It is always the same - excellent!! I tell all my friends that visit Chicago, they must go there. Food is excellent and the atmosphere is really nice."

  • "The service and atmosphere were great. The food, however, was just okay. I have had better italian food, at a cheaper price."

  • "5:30 reservation dinner reservation for 4. Delicious meal. Walked a couple of blocks to 8:00p show at the Vic Theater to see Emmy Lou Harris. Lovely evening."

  • "Food is always great. I have never had a bad or even mediocre meal there. Service is very good. Can get a bit loud if you want to have a intimate conversation."

  • "Mia Francesca always delivers great food. I hadn't been in a while, and was so glad I returned for a lively dinner with a friend. On a Thursday evening, it was jumping. It can be noisy, but I find sitting at the tables along the wall is very cozy and conversation is not a problem. Love the density of the seating...reminds me of Europe. Great food, great vibe."

  • "Mia Francesca's is a great neighborhood restaurant. Pros: Food is delicious. Dinner salads are large, so share to have room for the main course. Services was good. Note that they keep the meal moving; it's not a slow, leisurely meal. Reservations strongly advised for a Saturday night. Cons: The restaurant was crowded, and noise levels make it hard to converse. I could also easily hear the conversations of the tables on both sides of me because they were within 24 inches and it was tough to exit from our table at the end because tables are so tightly packed. Final recommendation: This is a good choice after Comedy Sportz; it's an easy walk of about 3 - 4 blocks."

  • "As always, Mia Francesca's delivers. The food, service and ambience are consistently the best. I have been going here regularly since 1999 and have always had great food and service. If the coach house out back is open, it's fantastic. Much quieter than the main dining room."

  • "First time in the restaurant to celebrate my son's 16th birthday. The first order was hot chocolate milk, and the server responded "We are out of chocolate milk" 12:45pm and you're already out of chocolate milk? dissapointing!"

  • "The waiter was very knowledgeable about the menu and wine list. He checked in throughout the meal and made sure our experience was great. We had someone with food allergies and he made sure everything was perfect."

  • "Picture a family style Italian Sunday afternoon meal where you lounge and linger for a long time. Discussing the week ahead, your favorite sports team, what you look forward to next in life all while the kids are very content to be in this place with you. The place makes you feel like you are part of something. The food is perfect. I had the Spinach Pappardelle with lamb ragu. My wife had artichoke ravioli. Both were Delicious. The service is perfect. Punctual, friendly. It felt like my daughter's friend was serving us. So friendly and kind. Love this place!!!"

  • "Usually have a good meal. This time it was awful . The food was bad. The service was bad. From the server to the bus boy. I could have been eating at a chain restaurant. Hesitant to go back."

  • "I have been here before, and the food is top-notch as always, but what stood out was our waiter and his suggestions of what to try. Fantastic place, and ask for the layered coconut cake!!"

  • "Mia Francesca is one of our favorites. Consistently great food and good service. The scene is loud and crowded so it is not for everyone but we always love it."

  • "We were able to get our table right at our reservation time on a Friday evening with our open table reservation. The food was great especially the risotto appetizer and the Ravioli Al Ragusa Di Verdure. (Stuffed with spinach and veggies) The service staff was great and there was not a long time from when we ordered to when the food arrived."

  • "Have loved other "Francesca's restaurants I've been to. Mia Francesca is too noisy, too crowded. Too uncomfortabel. The food doesn't live up to their sister restaurants and the service wasn't great. No. Wouldn't go back any time soon. Would rather go to Francesca's on Bryn Mawr."

  • "This place is great in all ways. The food is fresh and amazing. The pasta and bread are homemade and incredible. The atmosphere was bustling with laughter and energy. We were offered a choice in atmosphere, as they have a quiter, more intimate back room. The staff were all very pleasant. It also had a great crowd of patrons that highlight the character of the neighborhood. We ordered the beef carpacacio and it was perfect. I ordered the bolognese and it was seriously the best I've had. I was left craving more for two days after. Also, we ordered the tiramisu, which was light and deliciously authentic. I can be a picky diner with all the gems Chicago has to choose from and this place was a delite. I look forward to returning!"

  • "I moved to the neighborhood about a year ago and can't believe it took me so long to try this place out. The food was fresh and beautifully prepared and our server Tom was helpful and right-on with his recommendations. It's in my regular rotation from now on."

  • "We dined at Mia Francesca on a Saturday night. We had reservations and were seated in a timely manner. The wine recommendation from our server was good. Our food was really tasty. My only complaint would be that the portions were too large. The server should have recommended that we split the entrée or at least warn us that the portions were big. We were flying home the next day, so couldn't even take home a doggy bag. It seemed like a lot of wasted, good food."

  • "Went this past Valentines Day and we both loved it! We actually got seated in the back building (past the outdoor area) and it was very intimate and cozy. Only about 7-10 tables but I'm not sure if you can request to be seated back there (I would!). The service was great and the food was perfect. Great seasonings used and everything was reasonably priced as well! Highly recommend and will definitely go back."

  • "I went here with my roommates for Restaurant Week and we had a great time! The 4-course meal was delicious (though I preferred my friend's ravioli to my linguine). The service was a bit slow, but on a Monday night it seemed he was the main waiter for our part of the restaurant. And we didn't mind that much--because we happened to be there on "no corkage fee" night, so we brought our own bottle of wine, settled in, and enjoyed ourselves. I'd definitely go back--though given the Restaurant Week savings, I might wait until next year's."

  • "Due to 7" of new snow, my wife and I did not make the reservation, however, my daughter and her boyfriend were able to keep the reservation and walk to Mia Francesca. She stated the food was very good, the noise was so great they were unable to converse over the crowd noise and that the tables had been so jammed in that to put her elbow down required using the adjacent occupied table."

  • "Food was great but it was so noisy and tables are too close together. Our waitress was terrible and was very inattentive."

  • "Way too cramped, they really need to lessen the amount of tables they have."

  • "There was a bit of a kerfuffle over our reservation (be sure to give your first and last name...apparently we took someone else's table) but otherwise we had a great night. Delicious wine, and the specials for Restaurant Week were great. They have two bars and two dining rooms, so despite being pretty big, the place has a pretty small, cozy vibe. Lots of first dates happening all around us, which was sweet."

  • "I went with my boyfriend during restaurant week. It was grrat because we got to sample so many things! The pastas were both our favorites. Next time I wouldn't even get another course. I got the tilapia and it was good but not as yummy as the pasta had bee. He got the chicken and thought it was kind of bland. The dessert was out favorite! We both got tiramisu and looooved it! Highly recommend coming here for a nice pasta and dessert!"

  • "Mia Francesca never disappoints & it's always buzzing. I love that their menu is half/mostly hand-written - it's constantly changing! I'm not sure I've had the same thing twice & every dish has been equally as fantastic as the last! Most recently, I had rigatoni pasta with a spicy tomato sauce, eggplant & fresh mozz - phenomenal! We also had the bruschetta with coppa ham & a chicken breast dish with linguini. Their portions are more than generous for the price - & they have a great mix of vegetarian, land & sea dishes. I also overheard the table next to us inquire about gluten free options & they have a separate gluten free menu. Wine list is reasonable too - they have generic wine glasses, but will bring out "real" glasses on request."

  • "On a cold, snowy Sunday night, we found a warm welcome. The restaurant was busy but our reserved table was ready. Everything we had was delicious. The staff could not have been nicer, accommodating my grandson and my vegan son and daughter in law. It seemed like every one in the restaurant was enjoying him or herself. There was a good lively atmosphere. All in all, a very happy experience."

  • "Mia Francesca is a gem! This was our second visit and it was more outstanding than the first. The restaurant is small but cozy - bustling all the time! The food is excellent and it's an adventure to select things from the menu. Our server, Bette, was lovely and interacted with my 10 year old granddaughter (who loves the place!) I will most definitely go back."

  • "I came here for Restaurant Week, and overall I was underwhelmed by not only the selection (or lack there of), but by also what was served when I ordered off the special menu. I don't remember the specific name, but it was something osso buco (veal). Basically, it was ground veal wrapped in pasta. Not only was the portion small for the price ($16.99) (especially in comparison to their normal dishes), it was also chewy and didn't have much taste. We ordered Malbec wine; I thought it was whatever. My friend ordered the chicken alla salvia, which looked much bigger and better than my meal and was only a dollar more! I think if I were ever to come back, I'd want to try their regular menu, but not worth it for Restaurant Week in my opinion."
