A word from Mia Francesca Del Mar
The Francesca's family of restaurants has added another installment to the San Diego area. In addition to Davanti Enoteca, Mia Francesca's opened in the beautiful Del Mar community in February of 2012. Located in the Del Mar Highlands Town Center, the restaurant brings its famous rustic, Italian cuisine to the 150 seat space.
Restaurateur Scott Harris has opened over 20 Francesca's Restaurants in the Chicago Area since 1992, and is excited to bring this concept to the west coast.
Mia Francesca's features a large covered patio, indoor trattoria style dining, and a 50 person private dining room. Chef Woody Benitez leads the kitchen, providing Francesca's classic fare of zesty, earthy cuisine of Rome and the surrounding areas of Tuscany, Umbria, and Lazio. The wine list and cocktails are equally impressive in this one of a kind location.

Diner Reviews
  • "It pains me to say that I was disappointed with the meal. Having spent years frequenting the Mia Francesca in Chicago, I was excited at the prospect to dine at another location. Although the restaurant and server met expectations, the food did not. Asparagus was mushy in the asparagus salad. Both of our pasta sauces were bleh.... didn't seem fresh and vibrant. I hope this experience was a one-off and not the norm. We'll give it one more try, but may just be sidetracked into their next door neighbor, Davanti."

  • "We have made a visit here mandatory before or after the Cineopolis movies nearby. The food is great, the service is always friendly and prompt. Kevin the manager makes sure everyone is well cared for. The menu changes but they will make a favorite you remember (Cheese tortellini with chicken and prosciutto) The pizza is outstanding and they have creative salad choices (try the pea pods and cucumber). You can also add salmon, shrimp or chicken to any of the salads. It is a little energetic for a romantic evening but you could pull it off. A great place to meet friends or a group."

  • "The food was very good, but in our group of 6, most thought the food was a little salty. Carpaccio and lentils mainly. Great presentation though. It seemed as though the blue cheese was quite salty in the asparagus. The waitress, Jill, was awesome!"

  • "Excellent food and service. We dined on the patio and had a lovely evening. Started with the Risotto and a special flatbread made by the chef. For our main course we tried the halibut and the chicken dishes (with pasta on the side) - they were all superb. The pasta, fish and chicken were prepared perfectly. Dinner was followed by a delicious cup of cappuccino and my date had espresso. We met the Chef , Woody, who clearly loves cooking for his guests and does it with passion. We highly recommend this restaurant."

  • "Had eaten there numerous times , including New Year's Eve and menu/food was outstanding. Been there three times since with hopes that the menu and food would come close to previous experiences, but have been very disappointed. Lentil salad was good. The special scallop offering was an impressive portion, but was not distinctive nor particularly flavorful. Pasta was swimming in sauce. Wine list price very high . Nothing very memorable or outstanding about any of our dinners. Service was very good., but overall, disappointing experiences."

  • "Excellent food and service. Very attentive wait staff, present before even think needed them. Fantastic seafood"

  • "My wife and I usually eat at this restaurant before heading over to see a movie and the food and service is consistently an 7-9 (With 1 being poor and 10 being outstanding). On this last visit we had two friends of ours from out of town and the food was liked by all and the service was an A+."

  • "The food was quite good. However, the noise level was too high to carry on a conversation. The waiter was friendly, but his table service was very slow, and especially poor for wine and cocktails. We will not return."

  • "Food was great, but the acoustics in the back dining room are terrible. The place was packed on a Saturday night and it was so noisy we couldn't carry on a conversation, making the dining experience rather unenjoyable. I've eaten before in the front dining room on a similarly crowded Saturday night and the noise level was much better. The food both times was excellent. The service was friendly and very good."

  • "Not sure what's happening to so many restaurants like this, in which the quality of food so deteriorates over time. My $27 trout was pathetically thin, overcooked and tasteless. The only thing that was tasty as always was the bruschetta."

  • "Wonderful meal. Wait staff very accommodating to our three young kids."

  • "We joined friends for dinner and were pleasantly surprised by the outstanding meal. Our server was pleasant, attentive, knowledgeable and efficient. Our food choices were excellent, creative and paired nicely with a unique Italian wine that was moderately priced and perfectly matched to our food. Overall, an outstanding dining experience!"

  • "Easy to find. All staff members were gracious and attentive. The one small critique of a dish we had was rewarded with a complimentary side item. It wasn't even a complaint but they wanted us to be completely satisfied. We recommend this for any occasion."

  • "Excellent northern Italian cuisine-will definitely come back!"

  • "We were seated in one of the small rooms inside the restaurant. The noise level was so "energetic" that we weren't able to make any conversation. The waiter was stressed out and somewhat uncaring. The food was excellent, though."

  • "Mia Francesca had a nice atmosphere, good parking, tasty food along with solid service. However, the noise level was so loud, the two of us could barely communicate. Shouting to each other and the waiter had us skipping dessert"

  • "i always enjoy dining at Mia Francesca. This visit our waiter, kevin, was great...and the food was delicious...i had the roasted chicken which i must say is fabulous! perfectly roasted, and covered in a rosemary buttery sauce...the roasted potatoes a perfect side. as always it's noisey and this time our table was a bit cramped but overall i just love coming to this restaurant and i am never disappointed...."

  • "I talked my co-workers into trying this place during a San Diego Restaurant Week and we had a great time. The food was very good indeed. The reason why I gave it a 4 star is because my tilapia dish was perfectly salted for me, which almost always means too salty for others. I tend to oversalt my food to where others can't eat it. Again, NOTHING wrong with the food and I would certaily recommend the place to others, especially if you are looking for a good ambience, as the patio is beautiful. I can't wait to take my husband there for a date night!"

  • "We looked on line and Mia Francesca was on the San Diego Restaurant Week list so we thought we would try it. When we asked for the menu they said they had decided to do the week before and the week after but not the designated week. Does this mean that in addition to using OpenTable, one needs to call as well?"

  • "funghi with gorgonzola: boring sliced mushrooms sautéed with no herbs and some gorgonzola thrown on top. eggplant parmesan: eggplant had not been breaded and sautéed. undercooked with gobs of moz on top, soso marinara sauce. tilapia dish was pretty good. good bread and herbed olive oil. a great disappointment when compared with other restaurant week dining experiences."

  • "We have been going to Mia Francesca's since it has opened! We have always loved it! It's my daughters favorite place! We went there for her birthday dinner this week because that is where she wanted to go! However I am not sure what is going on with the kitchen. The food doesn't taste the same. My daughter even commented on it! She wouldn't eat it. The salad was wilted it was gross. The meatballs were inedible. Has something in the kitchen changed? This is the second bad experience we have had there. I don't think we will ever go back which is such a disappointment since it was a favorite spot of ours. What has happened?"

  • "I've been to Mia Francesca many times, and they never disappoint. I have been for date nights...out with the girls...enjoy the pizza and and a bottle of wine (or two! Wednesday night is 1/2 price bottles!). This experience was for a large work group...and it was just as great. The service is fabulous, very friendly offering suggestions, not too pushy but always there when you need them. The food is consistently great...from the appi's to the main courses to the desserts. Prices are very reasonable as well. Out of all the places in the "row" of restaurants here...Mia Francesca is the best!"

  • "This was a really fun spot for the 4 of us... great food and attention by the wait-staff. Only downside, it's REALLY loud inside when it's crowded... but I'd go again!"

  • "The table sitting was very tight, it was difficult for staff to get around tables to serve patrons. We also felt crowded at the table."

  • "I've been dining here since it opened and the food is always great. I had the seabass/branzino which was incredible. THe prices are reasonable except for the fish prices which are very high (27 for the branzino). The one small issue I have is with their kids' menu - it is a good menu and good pricing except when you add protein. Protein/chicken should be an option to the pasta. Otherwise, great place - I love sitting outside on the patio."

  • "Our dinner experience at Mia Francesca was excellent. You can count on a great meal every time. On a busy night our service was still the best!"

  • "Four of us ventured to Mia Francesca on New Year's eve. Service was generally attentive. My rosemary chicken was delicious. A friend had a piece of fish (don't remember what kind) and while tasty, the serving size was small. Two others ordered pizza, which looked beautiful but arrived less than fully cooked. Really, my husband actually spit out the sausage on teh pizza when he realized it wasn't fully cooked. Too bad, because we enjoy this restaurant.."

  • "The service and ambience were great, the food was not great for the most part. Here's the breakdown: Bread and olive oil - STALE, caprese salad -BLAND, prosciutto with mozzarella salad = DELICIOUS, Risotto with scallops = OVERCOOKED/RUINED, Gluten Free Penne with asparagus and cream sauce = SALTY AND CARDBOARD LIKE, Cannolis = DECENT, gelato = OVER FROZEN WITH BIG ICE CHUNKS IN IT. P.S. I must eat gluten free and that does not mean the pasta has to taste like cardboard. Taste of Italy has a delicious penne in cream sauce that you can't tell is gluten free. I would only come back for drinks because the ambience and decor is nice."

  • "Went there Xmas eve, party of 5. Sat us right near the sliding door, and it was cold outside. The busboy made it very clear there were no other tables for us to be seated at, and was quite hostile when we asked to close the door cause it really was freezing. Then the hostess came over to tell us we could not be re-seated. Not a great start. Our most excellent waiter, John, a true professional, saved the meal with his excellent service and dining recommendations. The food was quite enjoyable, and the portions were good sized. Price was also quite reasonable."

  • "Went here for a bite on Christmas eve, and was largely disappointed. The pizza isn't thin crust - its more like a cracker. The bartenders were arguing amongst themselves and the service seemed uneven. Rimmel's next door is head and shoulders a better restaurant."
    Dined on 12/24/2013
  • "My wife and I went to Mia Francesca because we didn't feel like making dinner - no special event, no real reason. We were very surprised that the food and cocktails were tasty, but most of all that the staff was extremely attentive and friendly. That turned it into a special night for us, even though it was just another Monday."

  • "I really like this restaurant and go there few times a year with friends who live in the area but don't know about these restaurants in that mall. The food was really good but I think they were short of staff . Their cappocino was not too inviting , even with a lot of foam was not filling the cup and kind of cold."

  • "Split Pizza of the day which had veggies and we added shrimp. Perf thin crust but didnt fall apart. Also had an app special which had Octopus and Spinach, which was great. In the fun, happening upper area of Del Mar Highlands, across from the super cool Cinapolis. Sister restaurant, Davanti, connected on other side. Davanti is also great but does not take res and always a wait, so easier to do a res at Mia Fran."
