There always seems to be a family gathering at one of the tables, which adds to the ambiance. never annoying. Local seafood inspired dishes. Beautiful inlayed bar top provides surface for friends to gather and cheer. discreetly placed tv showing sports for those exciting games by bay area teams. Because it's in a cool coastal location, the large fireplace always seems appropriate. Prices are very affordable and portion size is satisfying. Waiters are never far and very attentive without over attending. Mezzaluna has it right! Huge place, and not one empty table (unless, of course, you had a reservation). They actually had reasonably-sized portions instead of tiny ones; reasonably priced; attentive staff; accommodating host. My only complaint was that they brought our entrees well before we were finished with our salads...still halfway to go, in one case. It was refreshing that the hostess, and many waiters, were speaking Italian. We truly felt that we were in Rome or Sorrento having a meal. Overall, the food was very good. We tried the minestrone soup, charcuterie plate, stuffed chicken, standard tomato and basil pasta, and shared a piece of chocolate mousse cake for dessert. The stuffed chicken was outstanding. The vegetables were tender and the accompanying green beans were cooked perfectly. The pasta was equally as good - not too much sauce, great flavor. Mezzaluna fit the bill. We had a nice scenic drive to the coast and stopped at the Ritz Carlton for a drink. Then we drove to Mezzaluna which is located across the street from the harbor with a view of trees in front. The service was prompt and friendly. The calamari was tender, lightly breaded, hot and delicious. The Caprese salad was delicious.
My son had the lasagna. It was a huge portion with fresh meat sauce, fine cheese and home made pasta that melted in your mouth. I had the veal scaloppine which was thick, fork tender and had a wonderful mushroom sauce. The chocolate ice cream cake was just right. Friendly greeting and a nice table by the window overlooking the harbor, service was a little spotty at first but as the place got busy, it came up to speed. Caprese salad came out very nice (and plentiful) but I found it needed a touch of balsamic - luckily there was some on the table I could use. Prawns came out a little over cooked, but still good with a tomato/caper sauce with a nice little bite. Spimoni and coffee finished the meal. The first was in the main dining area and was moderately noisy. This time I requested a quieter table with a view and that was exactly what I got. I was entertaining two colleagues and we all enjoyed our meals and were able to easily carry on a conversation. My Zuppa del Pescatore seafood was fresh and succulent, the base was light and delicious. The Insalata Mista had a nice mix of really crisp and fresh veggies. For dessert, we shared a custard filled pastry covered with chocolate, which was perfect since it came as three pieces.
