A word from Mezzaluna - Half Moon Bay
Mezza Luna Restaurant, "half moon" in Italian, is located in the historic Princeton Landing Building (circa 1908). The harbor town of Princeton by the Sea is located 20 miles south of San Francisco on Highway 1. In this scenic area of Half Moon Bay, which overlooks the Pacific Ocean, you can experience breathtaking coastal views and marvel at the giant waves of Mavericks. Opened in the Summer of 1993, Mezza Luna continues to create an eating environment which provides the highest quality of meat, fish, produce, pizza and pasta. All with a contemporary Southern Italian flair.

Diner Reviews
  • "Mezzaluna gets five big stars for providing a consistent quality experience. The staff is pleasant and efficient. The food is quality, well prepared and worth coming back for time after time. You see a lot of locals celebrating birthdays or special occasions here. It is far off the trail enough to avoid drop-in traffic. We will not hesitate to return."

  • "Excellent service throughout. Fresh Italian Cuisine. Very curteous staff from the time we arrived, until the moment we left. I ordered seafood linguine and my wife ordered the lasagna. Everything was fresh and cooked to perfection. We will definitely be back..."

  • "I have dined at this restaurant a number of times in years past. I had always enjoyed both the food and the ambience. This was the reason for going back on Friday for lunch. Mezzaluna has become tired. The physical structure just looks worn out and there is no vibrancy in either the menu or the atmosphere. Our server was excellent however, he was attentive, nice, knowledgeable, really personable and helpful. So, I would not fault the server at all. I wouldn't return to this restaurant again unless I knew they had made some significant changes."

  • "Nice evening and birthday dinner. The restaurant service is always good but the food feels a little tired. My fish had no flavor but the veggies were good. The menus were worn and frayed. "

  • "Quiet at 6 PM, easy to chat over a meal. Can't speak for the busier hours but I'd chance another visit to check that out :)"

  • "Came here for my birthday and it was a very nice time. They made a special attempt to reserve a table by the fire and sang Happy Birthday for me. I had veal scaloppini which was excellent, as was the salad and desert. Our only complaint is that my husband needs a gluten free meal and the waiter had no clue, nor did he check with the cook to see if there was any wheat in the entrée he recommended. There must have been in the sauce, so he was pretty miserable for 24 hrs. It's embarrassing to have to quiz the wait staff every where we go to eat, but there are still many restaurants who don't understand it can make or break an experience."

  • "Went here with my Uncle who was looking for some good authentic Italian food. However, Uncle ended up getting the Lamb special which he said was very tasty. I had the Penne with eggplant, tomato and smoked mozzarella. Uncle got the chocolate souffle (ordered with dinner as it takes them 20 minutes to prepare). I got the strawberry ice-cream on white cheesecake and white chocolate chips so delicious!"

  • "The fresh porcini gnocchi were excellent. The signature chocolate soufflé was wonderful. We really enjoyed that our waiter spoke Italiano! Great fun. Would have preferred to be in the dining room with the view but the service was great where we were in the back room."

  • "We love this restaurant and had them cater our wedding. This Is the first time we took my sister with with the baby niece. The restaurant was very accommodating. Finding a table where we could pull the stroller up and offering to reheat the food after we were forced to take a little break. Food was great as usual."

  • "huge variety of other diners obviously enjoying the very good food in the very large dining rooms. Intimate not, but the grilled seafood platter was superb, as was the other dishes we tried. Would not hesitate to go back."

  • "This was our second visit to Mezzaluna. The first time, about a year ago, we were located in a little out-of-the-way corner and never got a sense of the restaurant as a whole. This time we were seated on what might be a stage on occasions when there's entertainment, so we had a "dias" view of the whole scene. Everything checked above is accurate! While there, we did see a vibrant bar scene AND several groups with kids. EVERYONE was treated by an amazing staff: we watched it all from our "perch". The bar area is carpeted to dampen sound level, but still fairly lively. Compliments to AMAZING CHEF! Best prosciutto ever tasted. Both calamari steak and marinated lamb chops best EVER! Veggies perfectly cooked. Great wine pairing. GO!"

  • "This is the third time I've had the pleasure of dining at Mezza Luna. I will always go back as the food and the service are outstanding. I consider myself a food snob so I don't give out high ratings very easily. My fiance and I had the mixed grill. Each bite was cooked perfectly, from the scallops to the salmon, nothing was overcooked (one of my pet peeves). Everything from the salad to the dessert was divine. Love, love, love this place!"

  • "Every time my girlfriend and I stay at the local R V park we make it a point to have dinner at your restaurant . The food is great and we always seem to get the same waitress who is very nice."

  • "We eat here often. This time we shared the prosciutto con frutta, yummy, almost transparent slices of prosciutto with perfectly ripe cantelope slices and salty black olives. My husband had the involtini ala Romana, thin veal slices wrapped around ham & mozzarella in a wine sauce. I had a daily special, perfect, delicate sand dabs in a butter sauce. Both dishes were accompanied by slender fresh spring asparagus and potatoes. Draft beer for my husband and a lovely bottle of Gavi wine for me. The staff couldn't have been nicer. We go here for special occasions and just anytime we crave the wonderful food they prepare."

  • "We had three dishes, all perfectly prepared with nothing overdone. And since we were sharing, they split the portions without any extra charge. Best of all were the dishes most Italian restaurants overlook, from southern Italy, sich as the raw marinated seafood salad. All was perfect."

  • "I rarely write reviews but the service is terrible! It was like pulling teeth to get any of the items we ordered. Although it was a busy Saturday night, the service was inexcusable. We ordered fairly quick and half of our beverages were not brought out till we reminded the server. It took over an hour to get our entrees and the food was sub par. Apparently there was a mix up in the kitchen but we were only told this after flagging down our server after an hour of waiting. The server never bother to check in. Food is sub par and overpriced. Would never go back or recommend this restaurant to anyone."

  • "Wonderful ambiance with views of old cypress and of the water. Elegant but relaxed atmosphere. Wait staff was attentive but never hovering. Our primary wait person was Bertha, who radiated warmth and charm and saw to our every need. The menu is excellent to the point of it being difficult to decide what to order. We ordered a starter, two different main courses and shared the chocolate souflee dessert, and all were done to perfection. A wonderful dining experience that we can't wait to do again soon."

  • "The service was exceptional with knowledgeable staff who show they truly care about your dining experience. Having traveled in Italy many times it was refreshing and reminder of the friendliness of the Italian people. The fish selection is wonderful and cooked exceptionally well with plenty of deep and robust flavors. The vegetarian fare was a little bland and could have definitely been taken up a notch. But highly recommend and will visit again."

  • "We had been driving past their sign on Highway 1 for years, and finally reserved a table for the trip home from a day in San Francisco. Our waiter was attentive but unobtrusive, which was nice as we have two young children. Started with the Caprese Salad - nicely seasoned, the flavors of the ingredients each had a place without crowding each other out. Everyone at the table ordered the Gorgonzola Gnocchi except me, who chose stuffed veal medallions. The gnocchi were light and fluffy, and the Gorgonzola cream sauce did not taste like a bomb going off in your mouth. My veal was tender and mild, served with a nice side of roasted potatoes and lightly steamed broccoli."

  • "Haven't been to Mezzaluna in years. I guess too many distractions on the other side of the "hill". Our visit was great so we'll be back soon and bring friends. The chef who has been there for years still has the "touch". Both dinners were excellent, could not be better and we are devotees of fine dining. Also, good bar and wine selection."

  • "We are local HMB'ers and come here when guest are in town.the food is standard italian and is very good. We had calimari appetizer along with salmon, lasagna, pizza and another pasta. All were well prepared and consistent. Tables are a bit close together so conversation was a little strained. But overall a good experience if you are looking for standard italian food."

  • "Took my mom here for her birthday. Asked for a nice table with a view and received a beautiful table. Waiter was very nice but obviously quite inexperienced. We were the first ones in the restaurant after it opened that day and we did not get our main course for an hour. Our waiter was assigned tables way away from where we were so we could not even get his attention. We finally had to get other waiters to come over. Food was great. Everybody enjoyed their meal. We had a party of six. They automatically add a tip to the bills for parties of six or more. I DO NOT LIKE THIS. When service is bad, low tip. Service is good, great tip! They did not tell me this ahead of time."

  • "My husband and I have been going to mezzaluna for 15 years and have never had a bad experience. The wine list prices range from affordable to as high as you want to go. Great multepulcianos and other italian wine favorites. All pasta is made in house and the desserts are made by their pastry chef. Mezzaluna is well managed and we have never waited too long of any dish. Get a table in the bar where the locals eat for a more casual experience."

  • "The food was good but nothing stood out like at other fabulous restaurants. The server couldn't really recommend a wine to pair and took a very long time to bring the check. When asked for it, he explained he didn't want to interrupt. Sweet but we weren't going to stop all conversation to have him bring the check. Food came all together and was good from appetizers, main entrees, to dessert. our group was large and felt a little out of place with the rest of the quiet guests but still welcome. Overall just good. The servers and other members of the staff were very friendly and accommodating."
