A word from Mezcal
Located in Downtown San Jose, Mezcal boasts one of the most distinctive dining rooms in San Jose. The brick exterior, metal work and indigenous Mexican motifs, sets the restaurant apart from its neighbors. Although the design is urban upscale, there is nothing watered down about the menu. Mezcal proudly serves authentic Oaxacan regional cuisine utilizing family recipes passed on from previous generations.Continued

  • "I think one thing i love most about Mezcal is that you can get vegetarian and vegan dishes. Next, i love the consistency in the quality of food and service. They are wonderful, and as someone who eats here regularly, they honestly make me feel like a valued customer. Whenever I have to entertain a business lunch, this is my top choice! Delicious food, tasty drinks.... way to go!"

  • "Loved Mezcal. They were wonderful and extra nice to my 11 month old grandson"

  • "I can't turn enough people on to Mezcal. The food is outstanding. Fresh, made at your table guacamole, tasty moles, something for everyone. I have never had bad service or a bad meal. Always fresh, always delicious."

  • "Everyone in my party loved their choice of food. My choice, I thought, was the best. I would go there again. The prices also were very affordable. My margarita was perfect."

  • "Good Mezcal selection, but there should be a tasting option offered and I found it a little pricey. Hot food could be a little warmer, and drinks and return visits from the waitress could be a little quicker. The waitress never came back to refill our drinks or ask how our food was. Dinner price was very reasonable, but I wouldn't go back to eat, but definitely for the tequila and Mezcal."

  • "The decor is really, really cute. The service was friendly and attentive. The food was a bit of a miss for me. Three of us had fish dishes which were overcooked. The premium margarita (I think that is what it was called) was FANTASTIC. The mole they served instead of salsa with chips was interesting, but we all would have preferred salsa. I would go back if someone said "hey we are going here want to come with?" but I probably wouldn't seek it out again on my own at this point."

  • "There are many places in the bay are for great taco's but this is an authentic restaurant with classic dishes from Mexico. We will be coming again and again."

  • "Authentic execution of Mole and Pork tacos were outstanding. Table side guacamole pre.... doesn't get better."

  • "Upon entering the bar, it smelled really bad, and the rest of the restaurant smelled like strong cleaning supplies. The kids meal was the best meal on our table. They served chips with a few watery sauces that are served in flat shallow trays, which is impossible to get onto a chip. The server forgot to bring the tortillas that were part of the meals. He brought enough for one person, when each person who ordered the meals asked for theirs, he acted put out and wanted to charge us. The food wasn't terrible, but wasn't good. I would not recommend this restaurant."

  • "Went with whole family - they did a great job making it special, including a rose for me, and Valentine's cookies for the kids. Food we very solid - drinks were great, and the service was very pleasant and helpful. Can't wait to go back!"

  • "Chips came with 3 signature mole sauces, a real treat. Each of the two of us chose a different dish and mole sauce. Quantities were plentiful. Dinner was served in a reasonable time. Waiter was attentive. We were not rushed. Will return when we are in the area."

  • "We arrived 20 minutes early for our reservation and were promptly seated. However, it took over an hour for our meals to be served which meant that we had to rush through our meals in order to make an 8:00 curtain just a few blocks away. The wait staff was always moving but there seemed to be far to few of them to be able to handle the holiday evening dinner crowd. The food itself was OK - the fresh guacamole was very good."

  • "My date and I had a wonderful time at Mezcal. The atmosphere was vibrant, the restaurant had great decor, and the food was great. I liked the brick aesthetics and the band playing. It was a great way to break the ice with someone and continue a special evening."

  • "I was delighted with the food. Their mole negra was among the best I've had and they have a couple of other moles. The food is special, different from the standard Mexican restaurant. Even the beans were particularly good and they were black beans rather than pintos. I enjoyed the mexzcal cocktail too. I'm looking forward to going back so I can try some more dishes."

  • "one of my favorites. Whether you eat meat, are vegetarian or even vegan, there are not only choices, but delicious choices! the food is great, moles delicious and great drinks. The servers are very pleasant and responsive. I regularly take people to this restaurant to expose them to all the great things Mezcal has to offer! Yum!"

  • "Wife and I enjoyed this place. Dishes are traditional Oaxacan, NOT Americanized Mexican.....so don't expect the "usual"."

  • "Great local authentic Mexican food. Margaritas are potent!"

  • "Went there before a concert. Service and atmosphere were great. Guacamole was tasty and solid margaritas. Main courses, mole and crane asada-type dish were just ok. This was billed to me as similar to Vive Sol in mountain view. Unfortunately the food didn't live up."

  • "This place is great when it's warm outside as their courtyard is outdoors, but during the winter months, they close it up and put heat lamps out there. It's such a great colorful place where the servers really take the time to find out what you really want and give it to you. Had a great time and ate way more than I had anticipated."

  • "I had my 30th birthday on the patio here and it was fabulous! Adolfo was in contact with me throughout all the planning to make sure everything went perfectly, and it did. I would love to do an event here again or even just dinner or drinks. The pomegranate Margarita's are the best and the event food options are great, including the most amazing little chorizo and potato hors d'oeuvres. Overall this was a great place to celebrate my 30th with my friends and family."

  • "We walked in a few minutes late for our reservation and fond that they saved a nice large booth for us. The waiter was friendly and explained the menu, and was attentive to us without being overly-attentive. The portions sizes were good and we both thought the food tasted excellent. We both love Mexican food, and it was a treat to have food from southern Mexico this time. The prices were reasonable too, and in fact we thought the food was better than we expected. Would definitely go there again and try a few more things on the menu."

  • "Food was great and service was great. Chapulines was a must try. Heard about this place on bizarre foods. Not your tipical mexican restaurant. The mole is good."

  • "We had the delight of having our New Years eve dinner at Mezcal, loved the service, food and ambience. We were greeted warmly and promptly seated. The wine and dinner were excellent. Service here has always been consistent, always good. Not too noisy or quiet. Would recommend for romantic date or business meeting."

  • "I am not sure if I want to go back again. I am not a big fan of mole so as my friends. Half of the menu are made with mole. Beef taco is very salty. But the mole sauce they gave us for the chip is good."

  • "It's nice to eat at a Mexican restaurant on the Peninsula that aims to serve authentic Mexican food. (I had just been in Mexico a couple of days before we ate here, and the food at Mezcal was reminiscent of the very good food that we ate in good restaurants in Cuernavaca.) We would definitely recommend this restaurant."

  • "The food was great and the style of the restaurant sparks many conversations. However our service was beyond slow. The waitress forgot our drinks and dessert and we could never catch her. It didn't seem super busy the night we came in."

  • "We checked this out on the recommendation of open table reviewers, yelp reviewers, etc. Wow, we're we disappointed. Flavorless salsa, runny guacamole, ceviche completely devoid of acid or citrus (how is that possible), and if people all over the world are really eating those grasshoppers, they can't possibly taste like these. Even the Margarita seemed weak, which doesn't make sense since we watched our very good bartender (the bright point of the night) mix it from scratch... Must have been hard for the drink to perform in the face of such a letdown from its supporting cast. We hit a taco truck instead of finishing dinner.... That had some flavor!"

  • "I live in the area and have been to Mezcal several times. Each and every time the food is outstanding. The drinks are great as well. However. the service is always subpar and this most recent visit was no exception. We even told the server that we had a show to see afterwards so would like to ensure we are attended to quickly. He acknowledged the fact as not a problem. It seemed though that he was always no where around when we needed him. This is typical of the service I receive from Mezcal and I'm not sure why. But, I still like to go because it's a very unique place and the food is great. I just put up with the poor service."

  • "One of our favorite restaurants in San Jose. Excellent food and service - especially the moles. Perfect margaritas. Friendly staff. The owner, Aldolfo, always stops by our table to say hello."

  • "Mixed experience: We went during Restaurant Week but I had to request a copy of the special menu since neither hostess nore waiter mentioned they had a special menu for the week. The food and presentation were nice. A good value, attractive, tasty. Good overall menu. Nice ambiance. The salad dressing was sweet but acceptable. The black beans served with entree were so salty they weren't edible. The desserts were low points, not worth the calories. The most off-note was that they served dessert while I was eating my entree. There were several empty tables, it was 8 p.m, so it wasn't as though they needed us to leave. This place needs to decide how it will meet consistent standards of food and service."

  • "We were a party of 4 greeted with a warm three sauce Huahacan flair. The chips and pre dinner perfect margaritas hit the spot! I ordered the calamari which at the table we agreed was one of the best we've ever had.. And living by the coast that says a lot. The main meal I ordered was the chicken enchiladas with tangy green tomatillo sauce served piping hot. I didn't have room for desert but that always leaves for a next time.. I thought the dia de Los muertos/ Frida khalo art made the decor fun! Especially the beautiful Catrinas ( paper mâché female life siZe skeletons). We were a hop Skip and a jump from The hp pavilion and all agreed we will Be back next concert!!"
