  • "Food was perfect. Service was informative, patient and provided a nice addition to the food. When we arrived there were fans on. It was hot during the entire meal."

  • "The food is French/Mexican fusion. Some dish seem more French influenced and others more Mexican. It works wonderfully. I can't wait to go back. AMAZING. The server was at times hard to get but the bus boy noticed twice and brought us what we were needing so all in all they helped out each other. Highly recommend."

  • "delicious and complex sauces with each dish. the onlu complaint i have is that not all dishes came out at the same time so for our party of 6, that was a bit awkward."

  • "Food was interesting and delish. Wine pairings were perfect and generous. Service was friendly and efficient. And the the best part - the chef made the rounds of the restaurant stopping to chat at every table. Charming!"

  • "The six piece tasting menu with wine pairing was a delight. Our waitress, a beautiful Bangladesh import, guided this gently through a lovely meal with excellent wine. The owner and chef came by to check with this partway through meal and our waitress asked after each course how we enjoyed the fare."

  • "What can you say about a restaurant that has received a Michelin Star in addition to many other awards and recognition? It had better be very good, right? Mexique not only meets but also exceeds all the expectations. We have eaten there several times and it keeps getting better. The food is fabulous and the service is knowledgeable and friendly without any pretenses. Simply remarkable!"

  • "Went here because of top chef contestant Carlos Gaytan. I was not disappointed. Parsnip and almond soup was very smooth and flavorful. Loved the Asada dish. The mussels were well cooked but the cheese broth was a little too much cheese, would have preferred a thinner wine broth. Atmosphere I marked down because it was very warm- but i think there was a problem with the air-con. Overall, excellent and would eat there again."

  • "My wife and I chose the tasting menu. The parsnip soup to start was perfect. The app was a calamari ceviche, it was ok at best. First course was shrimp and polenta. It was good, the polenta was reminiscent of a fine tamale masa. Next, we had pork belly that was executed very well with a peanut sauce that was good. That was followed by a seared duck breast that was as good as any fine beef. Finally, the served sweet guacamole and chocolate enchilada for desert. The guacamole was ok, the enchilada left a lot to be desired. The crepe was chewy and the ganache was average. Overall, it was a good experience. The food was good and in the case of the soup, great. Next time, I'd stay away from the tasting menu."

  • "My son and I at there on June 28, 2014. It was truly a memorable meal. Yes the air conditioning was not working, but that did not detract from the meal. Starting w/ the mussels, then the escolar on cedar plank and the lamb and ending w/ the chocolate enchilada, it was a meal bursting w/ flavor and impressive presentation. Highly recommend!"

  • "Went with two friends. All of us were very impressed. We each ordered different entrees, so we could share. Each one was better than the other. Unique preparation. Presentation was amazing, straight out of a magazine. Server explained each dish in detail, and chef came out to the dining room at some part of the evening to inquire about our experience. Go early because it gets filled up pretty quick. Already planning my next visit."

  • "Our fourth time dining here and the food is just as amazing as the first time. The mussels are just one of the things that keep drawing us back... and don't be afraid to ask for some extra bread to sop up all of the savory broth (and little morsels of chorizo) that the mussels are swimming in!"

  • "Tried the tasting menu. The food was well-presented and imaginative in concept but the flavor and consistency were underwhelming. Also, fairly suprised at the lack of attention from the waitstaff at a Michelin starred restaurant. Took 10 minutes on a slow Sunday night to take a drink order, rarely re-filled the water glasses, and could not answer questions about the dishes or identify many components on the elaborately plated dishes."

  • "I live a block away and have eaten at Mexique several times. I've brought different family members/friends each time. Everyone has enjoyed it! Most recently was last Saturday. My daughter ordered the French Toast and I ordered the Hurricane De Asada. We share plates. The goat cheese fondue sauce on the Hurricane De Asada was so smooth and flavorful ... and the compote on the French Toast was delicious! It was a party in my mouth! Every time I've been there I have seen Chef Carlos Gaytan there which lets me know he's either cooking my food or over seeing the kitchen to his standards. It's obvious he worked hard for his Michelin rating and it wasn't just handed to him! I highly recommend anyone to have a meal at Mexique!"

  • "Crazy good! Nothing was even "very good". It was crazy good. Hamachi appetizer, mahi mahi and then dessert enchilada. Can't believe you have Mexique and Frontera Grill in the same city. Just went for second time and did not disappoint! Tomatillo and apple soup and skat entree were great. When I know I'm coming to Chicago I make the reservation. Carlos Gayton was there to add to a cool night."

  • "From the amazingly creative and tasty food, to the superb service, to the owner/chef personally coming to our table to ask how we were doing, it was an "11 out of 10"!!!"

  • "I looked at reviews on Open Table and Yelp, and took advice to try something I wouldn't normally. I had the duck, which was of this world. Everything from the thing slices of bread to start to the amazing chocolate enchiladas for dessert was just perfect. We will be back!!"

  • "The restaurant deserves the star and is reasonably priced. Food is highly innovative and beautifully presented. Worth the taxi ride ($13 from city Center )"

  • "I've dined in Mexique on my birthday with friends after reading the Tripadvisor reviews and the Michelin guide. It was simply great! We've ordered the a la carte courses, and were not disapointed. The most memorable ones were the pork belly /shrimps, the duck and the desserts (!!!). The price for two (around $250 with wine) was a bargain. The taste can be described as the Mexican cuisine meets France. Really, reaaly great. The service was also flawless. HIGHLY recommended!"

  • "WE ordered the tacos and split 3 different varieties, I have to say the the pork belly was my favorite. I will go back again, the apps were wonderful! We even got to meet Carlos and take a picture with him."

  • "Sleek and sparse ambiance. Amazing menu. The tastes and technique in all of the dishes are fantastic. Brunch and lunch were fabulous, can't wait to go again for dinner."

  • "I was lucky enough to be recommended to go to Mexique by a friend of mine. I still havent gone for dinner, but brunch is a winner!!! You have the pleasure of eating Michelin star rated food for under $17 a plate. The Huarache w carne asada and goat cheese fondue still has me salivating!! Great spot, must go!!"

  • "The food is great. The service is helpful but not hovering. It is a place for adults. We took our friend from NYC and he loved it"
    Dined on 6/15/2014
  • "We had Father's Day brunch in this well-appointed, intimate room. Our server was excellent, attentive and available but not intrusive. We enjoyed our meals, (one, a version of carne asada, another, a version of crab cakes for ex.)and the obvious care that created the unusual combinations of ingredients. Mexique is a good dining experience for foodies, for our traditional Mexican Dad, not so much."

  • "Fabulous! We went with another couple and had a great experience. We started with Ahi tuna appetizer, it was made with watermelon and was fresh and fabulous. The skate is out of this world, the sauce makes the dish. Two had the fish special and it was really good as well. Can't wait to go back."

  • "Order anything with mole sauce and you will not be disappointed. My personal favorite was the pork belly dish. To start I definitely recommend the trio de sopes and a pitcher of sangria of course. The soup of the day was also excellent."
    Dined on 6/13/2014
  • "Mexican meets continental cuisine here with classical techniques at work with traditional Mexican ingredients. The cucumber soup: spicy, cool, delicious. Mole braised pork belly was inspired and beautifully presented. The skate wing with habanero buerre blanc was the highlight of the evening, delicate with a sauce that hinted at heat but didn't overpower the fish. Our desert of chocolate enchiladas was good...not great, but didn't detract from an excellent meal! The place was hopping, but the service was crisp and personable. We enjoyed the staff as much as the food! We will certainly return on our next trip to Chicago."

  • "I went with my boyfriend on a dinner date. Food was good. We didn't get any drinks. Desert was our favorite part. The bread to start and butter was really good too. I would come back here again!"
    Dined on 6/6/2014
  • "We tried the 6-course meal, which consisted of items from the menu and a few of the evening's specials. The meal was excellent, and wine pairings were inspired and melded perfectly with the food. The first course was a grilled peach gazpacho - spicy and flavorful, not too sweet. Second course was scallops - perfectly cooked, with different peppers used in the sauces, which worked together beautifully. Fish course was also excellent, as were the short ribs. The only imperfection was the duck (and I usually love duck) - a little tough and the skin was not fully rendered, but still very tasty. Waiters described each course as they were serving, both the food and the wine. Really teriffic evening."

  • "Sangria great. Seafood tamale not what I expected. It was like some kind of gel thing. Pork belly had so many bones or something in and way to spicy. I wish they would tell you the spicy food so people choose choose or tell them to not spice it up . The shrimp that came with it was great. I would have just ordered that."

  • " We were very excited to see Carlos garner a Michelin Star this year. Now we are wondering if they can truly live up to the recognition. This was our first unsatisfactory visit to Mexique. The food remains incredible, but the serving staff and the kitchen were not hitting on all cylinders. We started with a cold soup special, but they also brought my hot chile relleno order at the same time. When we were finally served our main course after a long wait, neither was prepared the way we had asked and they were sent back. The waiter apologized and offered us free dessert and a round of drinks. They have added additional seating, making it crowded and very noisy. The wine list remains quite pedestrian. "

  • "This was my second time at Mexique and both were stellar experiences. The Michelin star is well deserved, from the presentation to the food itself which is delicious. Each course is unique and beautifully plated. The service was excellent, not overbearing but attentive. One last pleasant note is that it is possible to have a conversation with one's companions, which is not possible in most restaurants as the music and general noise level is too high. I will be going back to Mexique in the future. "

  • "As a Michelin Star restaurant, Mexique not only has some of the best food I tasted in Chicago, but its prices are very affordable. $60 for a full two-person brunch (including a drink apiece). "

  • "Everything was wonderful - food, wine, service and the ambiance. It was just a delightful experience. We will be back. "

  • "We came to Mexique on the strength of it's Michelin star, and the promise of French/Mexican fusion let me intrigued. Service and ambient is adequate, and in line with the reduced prices that the menu offers, but don't expect stellar performance all around. The food itself was on two levels: great, if not outstanding entrees, with french techniques combined with the powerful mexican seasoning and sauces (the skate was a particular highlight of our party), and the desserts and appetizers being slightly disappointing. Overall I would definitely recommend Mexique, but do adjust your expectations."
