  • "Best meal I have had in a really long time. Unique flavor combinations that I have never had before coupled with great service."

  • "Mexican with French technique by a very thoughtful, creative team led by a real mensch. He cares about his customers & wants you to be thrilled, which he achieves every time. Everything we had was amazing. The service is helpful & friendly. Go, if you can get in!"

  • "The meal from the appetizers to dessert were outstanding! The ceviche appetizer was out of this world! I wish I lived closer so I could enjoy this wonderful place more."

  • "Tried Mexique on a whim. Man were we happy we did. Everything was outstanding! Their seafood mousse appetizer was fantastic. I had pork belly with smoked scallops and they were prepared beautifully. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend this place to anyone."

  • "Mexique is both a good french restaurant and a good mexican restaurant, but it is not great at either. I've been to a few fusion restaurants that elevate both to the next level while here I found I was either having a good Mexican dish or a good French dish but when I was done I was left wanting either a great Mexican dish or a great French dish. For the price I would have expected better. Next time I'll go to Frontera Grill for Mexican or Mon Ami Gabi or Avec for French and not feel wanting afterward."

  • "I read about Mexique and wanted to celebrate a recent job offer over breakfast. The restaurant opened at 10 am and the atmosphere was quiet and intimate. Our server was exceptional. We enjoyed the breakfast entrees and the full bodied coffee. Don't forget dessert, the apple tart is delicious!"

  • "I loved the atmosphere of this place and the service was amazing! The staff was helpful and also very informative! Our dinner was amazing and the wine list not too extensive. I cant wait to return! The Mar y Terra was outstanding and my new favorite dish."

  • "We had a lovely experience at Mexique. I really like that it is a high quality restaurant, but doesn't feel stuffy or too formal. My only criticism is that it was so loud in the restaurant that it was hard to hear the descriptions of the food. Normally I don't mind at all if it's boisterous or a little loud. But it was very distracting and a little disappointing that we couldn't really hear our server when she was describing what it was we would be eating. Other than that, the food was amazing. Absolutely delicious!"

  • "We consider the food to be "upscale" Mexican. The veal short ribs were superb. Our table loved the tuna ceviche. We always get a pitcher of their wonderful sangria. Getting a little more difficult to get a reservation since Carlos was on Top Chef. Service is outstanding. We always go their before the Chopin Theater performance."

  • "Mexique is a true Chicago treasure. I have had the pescamal appetizer many times--always a bit different and always wonderful. We also enjoyed the cerviche, skate wing, and veal shortribs. It's a warm, friendly place. The 6 course prix fixe is a delicious introduction to the range of food Mexique has to offer."

  • "Chef Carlos Guytan has a true gift in blending flavors, textures, and colors from various cuisines. His interpretations of Mexican inspired food cross French and American lines. The variety and applicaton of seasonings are unique. I am surprised that he is not booked solid and I was able to reserve a table for 3 on a days notice. Of course that was on a Wednesday night."

  • "Amazing food - had the scallops and pork belly. And, loved the sangria!"

  • "We hadn't visited since the owner was on Top Chef - after this visit I can't believe he didn't win! We visited for brunch and the food and beverages were outstanding! Sangria and the Mexique Bloody Mary were both delicious, strong and full of interesting flavors. We had the Tacos de Pescado (fish tacos) which were delicately seasoned and perfectly cooked as appetizer and for entrees we sampled the chilaquiles, the enchiladas verdes and the chorizo stuffed crepes - all had ingredients of the highest quality and were perfectly cooked. Hispanic flavors were strong in the food but wouldn't be overpowering for a novice. Server was friendly and helpful and we enjoyed his suggestions. Bar looks awesome and we are considering a bar only visited."

  • "I took my sister who was visiting for the weekend to this restaurant due to the hype and reviews I have read. The starters were excellent. The Ceviche might have been the best I have ever had. The mussels were also amazing. However, the entrees were fair. The veal short ribs were all fat, and I could barely eat them. The underlying flavors were good, but I couldn't get over the layer of fat. At first, I thought it was a sauce or even cheese encrusted, but once I put it in my mouth it was downhill. My sister got the Chile Relenos. They were good, but kind of bland. The staff was polite, and helpful in recommending our wine selection. Overall, I don't think I will come back to this restaurant."

  • "We had a great experience dining at Mexique. The food was interesting and complex, and actually fairly affordable (it were the drinks that upped our bill). It was nice to see chef Carlos Gaytan cooking and visiting w/ each tables. Highly recommend for the great food- especially the ceviche. The best we've ever had."

  • "But Mexique definitely did!! EAT HERE. We did lunch--2 apps, 2 entrees, 2 desserts. Appetizers were the trio and cochinita rillettes. Entrees were the asada on corn masa and this shredded pork with tortillas (sorry I forgot what it's called). Desserts were guacamole with crispy cinnamon sugar tortillas and chocolate enchiladas (crepes). EVERY SINGLE THING I PUT IN MY MOUTH WAS DELICIOUS AND BEAUTIFULLY PLATED!!! Even the strange sounding guacamole dessert--my friend commented that it was so pretty she could hardly bring herself to eat it. Came in right before they closed to prep for dinner and were treated amazingly well. Carlos is a sweetheart! Deserves all the recognition he gets."

  • "Introduced our young niece and nephew to fine dining. Was amazed with 11 year old Ian ordered skate, and loved it. Everything we ordered was well presented and flavorful. Chef Carlos came to the table to explain the memorable tuna tartar."

  • "We love this place. I say we because my friends love it and so does my husband who is a picky eater. We brought some out of town guest the other night and they loved it."

  • "This was my second trip to Mexique and first since the chef was featured on Top Chef. The restaurant was much busier on a Wednesday night than my previous visit so the Top Chef exposure and Michelin star have helped their business, The server was very pleasant and knowledgeable, the food was impeccable and the chef even came around to visit each table. I highly recommend the tasting menu. It is perfectly portioned and very well thought out. Each dish complements the next with just the right amount of heat (and I'm a bit of a wimp when it comes to heat and I was never overwhelmed.)"

  • "Our meal at Mexique was quite a pleasure. We chose the chef' starting menu and enjoy six courses at reasonable portion sizes. The duck breast was outstanding. Each course had a subtle heat that enhanced the experience. Delightful."

  • "Went with a group of friends, have been wanting to go for the longest time and finally had an excuse. Everything was impeccable. The food, service and atmosphere were phenomenal. Our waiter Freddie was absolutely fantastic. Charming, knowledgeable, and not at all stuffy. We ordered just about every single appetizer and then split an entrée or two. I will be going again as soon as I have the chance."

  • "We dined here during Chef's week. I chose the prix fixe with ceviche, pork belly and apple tart. Everything was delicious...the pork belly was AMAZING. It was served with a sweet potatoe purée that I was be craving for weeks. My husband order the lamb which was also cooked perfectly. We also choose the share a picture of Sangria. It wasn't overly sweet but quietly strong. We didn't know what hit us until we were home and we're no strangers to libations. The only complaint is the place is very small so people are going to be constanty walking by you no matter where you sit. The staff was friendly. I would definitely visit this restaurant again."

  • "We had intended to get the chef week menu but changed our mind and ordered the 6 course tasting menu. Every dish we had was amazing. The plating was beautiful with all the special touches and the sauces, those sauces! That chipotle tamarind sauce, I wish I could buy a bottle of it! Mexique deserves their Michelin star."

  • "The food at Mexique was very creative and good, and the service was excellent, but there were a couple of disappointments. We know the restaurant isn't strictly Mexican and has a European, actually French influence. They offer sangria, but we couldn't understand why a chef from Mexico wouldn't offer a margarita - or any cocktails for that matter. We had the ceviche. It was served along with French bread very thinly sliced, causing the bread to dry out quickly. This pair seemed a bit odd to us, although the ceviche itself was excellent. My husband ordered the stuffed poblano, which he enjoyed, but he wasn't blown away. I had the dorado, which was very tasty but seemed a touch overdone."

  • "This is a great spot... tried it for Chef Week & will definitely go back. The food was a amazing and there is a warm, hospitable spiritual dimension to the place that is both intriguing & nurturing to the soul."

  • "I wish I had tried Mexique sooner. Simply, it was one of the best meals and we already booked another reservation. We were a party of 4 and every dish was delicious and beautifully presented. Our favorites were, the Tartar, mussels, ceviche, skate wing and Mar Y Tierra (the mole was outstanding!)."

  • "This little gem in West Town elevates Mexican cuisine. Service was great and staff is very gracious in explaining the menu. The pork belly was delicious and melted in your mouth. Can't wait to go back!"

  • "My husband and I have been to Mexique both for brunch and dinner. Both times the food was excellent and the service outstanding. For dinner we chose to split several of the small plates and one entree. We had the Pescamal, Ceviche, Trio of Sopes, Tartara de Carne, and Tinga de Pollo for small plates. All were delicious and perfect sharing size portions. For the entree we chose the Mar Y Tierra - Pork Belly and Scallops. It was delicious as well. We got the Chocolate Enchiladas for dessert. Everything was excellent and the servers were very attentive and helpful in making recommendations."

  • "This was a birthday lunch so we were disappointed that the restaurant did not have a full bar."

  • "The skate wings were fantastic. Although the name of the dish was clearly on the scary-exotic side, the taste of these fish dish was AMAZING. Seasoning, preparation, everything was mui sabrsoso! Next time I would probably replace sangria with a more reasonable side for the fish dish. Anyway, it was a really good catch!"

  • "Mexique offers an unusual fusion of French and Mexican and makes it work delightfully. Attractive presentations with lots of flavors and zing. Great food, attentive service."

  • "Another great meal. Unfortunately it is becoming more and more difficult to get reservations to this wonderful place. But that's the only negative. The service is flawless, the wine list reasonable and the food is always memorable."

  • "Delicious, creative food. Portions are very ample. The wait staff is friendly, attentive, and knowledgeable. Carlos, the chef, went around to the tables chatting with people and allowing photos to be taken."

  • "Food wasn't bad; just wasn't excellent. The soup we started with was fantastic and everything else after was just "good" or "okay." The steak was cooked over the requested medium rare and, while nicely flavored, was consistent with a cut I could get from Jewel. The duck was nicely cooked, but the mole disappointed. It was like runny barbecue sauce with a chipotle kick. The kitchen also fell very behind. At the time, I wanted to yell at Carlos to spend less time in the dining room soaking up his 15 minutes of fame and take care of his his food! Would I go back? Sure, why not? But I won't be recommending it, which disappoints me. I had really high hopes after reading the accolades and being such a fan of Carlos on Top Chef."

  • "We had heard good things about Mexique and then saw the chef as a part of Top Chef this past season, where he was impressive in the kitchen. Eating here did not disappoint. The service was attentive but not overbearing and the food was spot on. We started with the tinga de pollo - wonderful tosada like creations with a bit of a zip and a wonderful flavor. Our group had all different entries, lamb, chile relleno, scallops & pork belly and asada....each was beautifully plated and absolutely delicious. For dessert we tried chocolate crepes and the apple tart, and not a morsel was left on each plate. The portions were perfect sized and the food was outstanding. One of the best meals I have had in Chicago."

  • "Service was a bit slow and food was average, surprisingly average. But good ambience for a brunch if you are looking for something casual"

  • "We went on a Tuesday night, arrived early but were seated right away. The ambiance is nice, although it was a little loud and busy where we sat for my wife. That was all forgotten when we tried the food! The tres sopes were out of this world, especially the one with lamb. The tinga was juicy and spicy. I had the Mar y Tierra and my wife had the asada for our entrees. Both were exceptional in preparation and presentation. The hibiscus on the pork belly was an unexpected touch. My wife had the sangria which was very good and I had an excellent dark ale spiced with chile ancho. Save room for dessert! We both left with smiles and will definitely return for more."

  • "Mexique has been one of my favorite restaurants since it opened. However, this was my first time for brunch. I must qualify my comments in that I love breakfast dishes, especially Mexican recipes. However, the meal exceed all of my expectations. It was simply outstanding. Please try the POZOLE VERDE. At one time I could only find it in Santa Fe, but even though it is more commonly found at a number of Chicago restaurants, Carlos's version could be the best I have had. I also recommend the following: CAZUELA DE PUERCO, HUARACHE DE ASADA, and always Carlos's signature dish COCHINITA PIBIL. Whether you go for lunch, dinner, or Sunday Brunch, a meal at Mexique will be a wonderful and memorable experience."
