Diner Reviews
  • "We went to this restaurant very hopeful. Unfortunately, our experience was not very good. The food was mediocre at best. My Pork Carnitas was tough and fatty, although the flavor of the sauce was very good. I sent that plate back and it was replaced with enchiladas. Those were fine, as was the other food served. The plates came with white rice, and no beans, although two of the plates were suppose to have beans on them. This is a new restaurant, so we are hoping that they are just working out the kinks. We will try it again in a month or two again hopeful."

  • "I don't get these other reviews. MexCal has great dishesb, great margaritas, and it is the only good Mexican food in Orinda (Sorry Barbacoa). The Mole is awesome, the kids burritos are a great deal, the salsa is spicy, and the people there are nice (although they need to get into a bit of a better groove on the service side)."

  • "Nothing remarkable. Tiny margarita for the money. Although ordered on the rocks, the glass was packed with lot of tiny ice so there were 4 or 5 sips of beverage and a whole glass full of ice. Disorganized service. Nice people."

  • "MexCal's expansion to Orinda brings a new Mexican restaurant to a town of limited dining choices. With its festive atmosphere and colorfully painted wooden Mexican furniture, this spot offers a sensory treat. Though it bills itself as a fusion restaurant, the result proved a somewhat strange hybrid. One example: the creme brulee turned out to be a cheesecake-like custard with the traditional crust of caramelized sugar. Not unpleasant, just not creme brulee. The appetizers were definitely the star of the meal. Other dishes reverted to the standard Mexican fare: molded rice floating in a sea of refried beans. The night we were there, the staff seemed under-trained but the manager gets credit for stopping by every table for diner feedback."

  • "The restaurant was nicely decorated. The night we went, they had nothing available on the menu that we ordered. We checked the menu online and we were looking forward to a chicken soup only to be told it was not available, along with several other menu items we picked. When I finally did pick something, I was brought a different dish. Out waiter was not too knowledgeable about the menu. They are going yo have to make done major changes to stay in business ."

  • "I went with a group of 6 to try this restaurant. Read the menu beforehand and looked forward to ordering the cornish game hen in dark mole sauce...sounded like the one I have been trying to find since enjoying it at a favorite Sacramento restaurant that i don't get to enough. EUREKA! It is the stuff i have been searching for in the bay area...i recommend the mole sauce at this restaurant. Margaritas were good, we had a nice table & with a relaxed attitude of staff were able to sit and enjoy the evening."

  • "This restaurant has recently opened and has potential to be a go-to place. The food was unique and good and we would enjoy returning to try other dishes. The staff mostly seemed to be trying hard. They could use more experience together and polish as there were a few things that happened that seemed odd to us."

  • "Not your usual burritos & tacos with rice & beans. The food is typical of regions of Mexico. Good for exploring different Mexican food. Lobster bisque was outstanding."
