I knew this was a place for foodies, and obviously wine geeks, and the menu did not disappoint. As a veteran of working in fine dining myself, I can attest to the quality of both the dinner menu and the extensive wine list. My date started with a fino sherry, and I had the Argyle Brut Rose. We had the asparagus appetizer, perfect combination of flavors, even though I don't eat eggs so my date had the singular pleasure of enjoying that perfectly poached ova with his share. I chose a bottle of Crozes Hermitage, knowing it would complement both our dinners, lamb shank for him and duck confit for me. Our meal was outstanding. I haven't had duck confit that well prepared since I worked at Veritable Quandary. Metrovino offers "smack downs", flights of wines pitting different regions against one another. We had to wait a bit for our appetizer but they fully acknowledged this and gave us a glass of wine that paired well, on the house. Not many, if hardly, any restaurants do this. The ambience was perfect and I will be recommending this place to our friends and will be back for sure.4/20/2013 12:00:00 AMMost restaurants lack adequateMost restaurants lack adequate facilities for storing open bottles of wine. As a result wines offered "by the glass" are typically cheap and of disappointingly low quality. Aside from its great food, the most attractive feature of Metrovino is its astonishingly large selection of wines by the "taste" or by the glass --- many of them truly exceptional!

The endive salad was a little to sophisticated -- or bland -- for me. The radiccio salad my wife got was to die for.
I had a perfectly cooked hanger steak with mushrooms, onion rings, potatoes with pancetta. Very nice. My wife had the lamb shank, which I drooled over. We should have switched, only she doesn't like the steak as rare as I do.

As it filled up service improved. The wine recommendation was great - better than my choice from the "by the glass" menu. Only reservation about returning with another couple is that the menu doesn't have a lot of breadth, so if one of your party isn't into what is on offer (as one of ours wasn't), that could put a damper on things.
