Metropolis CafeGreat food & location. OK seating.Very good food. Endive salad was unique & very flavorful. Risotto was excellent. Chocolate pudding cake was to die for - nice chocolate flavor, not too rich or dense, just yummy. Place is small. Nice bar area. We ate early before theater so not noisy. Too bad the seating is not very comfortable. Table by windows is good for people watching but window seat is too shallow. & slanted so felt like you're constantly slipping off. Not much space for feet either. Go for the food!6/12/2013 12:00:00 AMOur favorite neighborhood spotFabulous food, casually sophisticated atmosphere and menu and superb wine list (including, eg, two Rhone reds by tiny producers I haven't seen on other lists). Would recommend to anyone.6/7/2013 12:00:00 AMConsistently wonderful. AConsistently wonderful. A neighborhood favorite. The staff are just fun and nice to everyone and the food is always great and well presented.6/7/2013 12:00:00 AMIntimate, great, consistentIntimate, great, consistent food, great neighborhood spot.5/24/2013 12:00:00 AMgreat appsPerfect place to dine before theater. We were three and we decided to eat family style. We ordered five appetizers and one main dish and grazed happily. We had plenty to eat and were able to taste lots of yummy dishes. The endive salad, the pea soup and the veal were really wonderful. The gnocchi with duck confit and the jonah crab thingies were good. The least interesting was the roasted mushrooms dish, which I had ordered. I think it was supposed to come with sea salt - perhaps someone forgot that part. At any rate,it was better with table salt, but nothing to write home about. Now I want to go back and try some of the dishes we didn't order. Staff was attentive enough and accommodated our grazing quite willingly.5/22/2013 12:00:00 AMgreat food, great serviceWe had an outstanding experience at Metropolis the other night. I have eaten there before and enjoyed it but the food the other night was fabulous. Fresh pea soup with truffle oil...delicious gnocchi with duck confit and my husband had salmon that was done to perfection. It is a cozy atmosphere where the staff is friendly and the prices are so reasonable.5/22/2013 12:00:00 AMWhen you just want a good mealMetropolis is my neighborhood default zone. That may not sound like much, but for us, it is really important. We know that we can take out of town friends there when they want the South End experience, with good food and service all within a brief walk from our home. The menu never disappoints and the prices are reasonable. Without being pushy, Metropolis always holds its own among a field of ambitious restaurant offerings.5/14/2013 12:00:00 AMSouth Boston GemWent to Metropolis for the first time this Saturday evening with another couple. The thing that attracted us to Metropolis was the exterior - reminded us of a small Parisian cafe! It is a small place, less than 15 tables, and felt intimate right away. We enjoyed the salads, fresh and simple but flavorful. Great bread with roasted garlic cloves and oil. Nice wine selection. We enjoyed the risotto and the steak specials, also got the "charred asparagus" and roasted Brussels sprouts for sides. Nice ambiance, lively enough but able to hold a conversation. We like the neighborhood, strolled around afterwards, and liked the casual feel but upscale food options. Service was fine but nothing special, no complaints. Would go again for sure.5/4/2013 12:00:00 AMWonderful...just go.Everything about this place is wonderful. The atmosphere, the decor, the service and most of all the food was so very very good. Hard to make a choice since it all looked fresh and delicious. I was a bit under-the-weather so I chose the roasted chicken and it was the perfect choice, so good. My friend had the salmon (wow, beautiful), my husband had the rigatoni (remarkable). The mussels appetizer included some of the best, fat mussels I've ever eaten and I've lived here 25 years! Not a mediocre choice to be had. On top of that the staff is great AND the clientele around us were very friendly and eager to share thoughts on selections. This is a friendly and easy place to enjoy an excellent meal with anyone you care about. Just go.4/26/2013 12:00:00 AMOnce again The MetropolisOnce again The Metropolis Cafe is the perfect answer for dinner before the theater. Our entrees were quite delicious and everything worked out perfectly.4/25/2013 12:00:00 AMA South End gemLoved it.My second visit, my husband's first. For starters: fennel salad with smoked bacon, roquefort and parsley and a chopped salad with soppressata; the cod with gremolata (superb)for me, and the tagliatelle for him. The food was simply wonderful. The seating as requested. The place is cozy and appealing- maybe 15 tables and a generous bar where lots of folks were eating. Service: welcoming and professional. We will return soon: many more good things to eat!4/24/2013 12:00:00 AMGreat food, service, atmosphere.Great food, service, atmosphere. I'll be going back soon.4/18/2013 12:00:00 AMI thought the food was excellentI thought the food was excellent and the service was very attentive. It is such a cute place. Loved it. The food is always good and the hostess and wait staff are very friendly and helpful4/1/2013 12:00:00 AMExcellent food and service,Excellent food and service, and it wasn't very loud - you could actually have a conversation without yelling. Very small and intimate. We were very happy with our meal.3/26/2013 12:00:00 AMWent with two friends fromWent with two friends from out of town, and we all ordered off of the restaurant week menu. Three different dishes, three happy diners. If you want an intimate, down-to-earth dining experience in Boston, you can't do better than Metropolis.3/23/2013 12:00:00 AMI've been coming here forI've been coming here for over 10 years and I still love it.3/23/2013 12:00:00 AMVery nice menu and very goodVery nice menu and very good value. House wines are very good and inexpensive.3/20/2013 12:00:00 AMWe had an excellent meal hereWe had an excellent meal here recently. I had a superb gnocchi appetizer, very good duck breast, a great chocolate cheesecake, and a glass of wine, all from the Restaurant Week menu. My wife had an excellent soup and the tagliatelli from the regular menu. Prices are reasonable, especially for this quality of food. This is a small restaurant, and at busy times it could be crowded, since the bar and tables are close together, but it has a cozy feel to it.3/20/2013 12:00:00 AMComfortable and relaxed. FoodComfortable and relaxed. Food always above average and a good value. I will continue to consistently dine here.3/13/2013 12:00:00 AMSpecial Neighborhood SpotSmall, intimate setting with outstanding, carefully-prepared food and a neighborhood feel to it. On a Sunday evening, several of the patrons seemed to be locals well-known to the staff. Good spot for eating at the bar, which has old-fashoned swiveling stools. Salmon in a tangy white sauce was light and buttery, the veal with a cauliflower-leek gratin was excellent. and the crispy chicken on mashed potatoes was rich and tasty. Hangar steak is on every menu; but this was a mouth-watering rendition at an affordable price. Creme brûlée with blueberries and the warm banana bread pudding with vanilla ice cream for dessert and both did not disappoint. Overall a fine dining experience in a casual, comfortable atmosphere.3/10/2013 12:00:00 AMwe eat at Metropolis everywe eat at Metropolis every Christmas Eve, and every year we have a very nice experience. wonderful bread (but too much garlic in the olive oil!), fresh salads with a bit too much vinegar, a wonderful chicken and vegetables risotto but my wife's salmon was overcooked although nicely seasoned, and the chocolate dessert was perfect. it's a great setting and the service is very attentive if a bit impersonal. i offer these criticisms only because with a few improvements at the margins this place could compete with the best of the South End.12/24/2012 12:00:00 AM
