Diner Reviews
  • "We went here on March 28, 2014, 6:30 reservation prior to Bolero (Cincinnati Ballet) at the Aronoff at 8pm. We were seated promptly & informed waiter about ballet. We ordered drinks and dinner knowing we didn't have much time. One of us had a salad, which came in a reasonable time. Then we waited and waited for dinner. By the time it came, we had to eat really fast to ensure that we'd be able to get across the street and into our seats. Very disappointing! The food was delicious, though. Scallops with just a few on the plate, salmon, chicken (great, but bone-in--would have been nice to know that from the menu or the server). Overall not a very good experience. We are hoping they just had an off night and might try it again."

  • "Food was great... a lot of smoke flavors... loved the charcuterie board - radishes were amazing... the restaurant was too loud to have a conversation with 2 of us for dinner, but really enjoyed the lounge ahead of our dinner - great people watching of the passer-by's on the street."

  • "The food was unique and every bite was delightful! My only complaint would be being seated at a 2 person small table where you had to move the table to get in and out of the bench side. The plates and glasses barely fit on the table. It kind of adds to the modern, community feel but isn't very comfortable. Overall we loved our experience and will go back for special occasions. Great location for before or after a play, museum, or night out downtown!"

  • "My girlfriend and I ate here a couple days ago and came away from the whole thing with a pretty good last impression. The food was great. We got the Burnt Carrot Salad (amazing, I had the burger (amazing) and she had some kind of pasta with roe in it? Which was actually pretty good too. The portion size, burger aside, was quite small but in line with other nice restaurants in the area. I'd go there again for the burger and that killer salad alone. We also had a couple drinks and had the ice cream/sorbet for dessert. Our waiter and the rest of the people on staff were very friendly, our water glasses were always filled."

  • "Burnt carrot salad is mild and excellent. Rough pâté is mild, moist, like textured velvet. It's served with oiled, drippy bread slices. Ask for plain bread. Strip steak was melt-in-mouth tender, VERY flavorful -- utterly delicious. Duck was quite good and a leaner cut than most. Wine selection excellent. Cheese tray So-So. Disliked smoked grapes on side, & request plain bread again. Overall, food was outstanding. Did NOT like noise level in restaurant. Any designer could help reduce noise level."

  • "Wonderful food. The soup was absolutely delicious and then we had the carrot salad and it was a delight."

  • "The only area we don't care for is the ambiance, not dynamic or dramatic simply cold and almost institutional (like an average chain hotel) if the chairs were more comfortable and the vanilla white walls were warmer I know we would be more inclined to idle and possibly have after dinner drinks or dessert. The look right now is not complimentary to the food or service."

  • "The food was exceptional. I highly recommend looking at the restaurant online and reading about them, the chef and their food philosophy to know what to expect from this restaurant (easier than me re-posting it here). Loved the open fire cooking which gave a distinct flavor to all the food. My meal was exceptional. The menu changes daily (I think) and offers a smallish selection, but each item was very different from the others, so I think anyone would be able to choose at least one. Our waiter was friendly and knowledgeable about the selections. I will definitely dine here again. Great dinner choice for anyone going to an event at the Aronoff."

  • "We visited the Metropole shortly after it opened and there were significant miscues in both food and service. They have made great strides. Food was well prepared--flavorful with interesting presentations. Interesting cocktails and nice wine list . I would definitely recommend this restaurant. We had 3 different entrees and all-- chicken, pork chop, salmon-- were excellent."

  • "Our entire meal was fabulous from drinks to dessert. Cocktails are whimsical and really closed well. Burnt carrot salad could have been my entire dinner I loved it so much. Chicken dish was excellent and prepared smoked which is different from the usual roasted chicken dishes out there now. Pineapple upside down cake was over the top good. Order it."

  • "The Metropole is a great place to grab a bite prior to visiting the Aranoff! The food is unique to Cincinnati - very interesting menu - fit for vegetarians. Very creative and tasty dishes. Their cocktails - and their use of "shrubs" a fruit based vinegar are too good! The danger is in having one too many before the show. The staff are attentive, but not hovering and are very very good and managing everything so that we got to the show without worrying about getting the check on time or feeling rushed... This is the third time I've been to the Metropole for dinner before the theater and it will absolutely not be the last time.."

  • "My Friends and I had tickets to Wicked on a Friday night, and we wanted a restaurant in comfortable walking distance. I had seen advertisements and had been Very interested in trying out the restaurant. We were able to make a reservation the Monday before and due to traffic we were running a few minutes behind. We had called and mentioned that we would be late and it wasnt an issue at all. The atmosphere was great, the table were pretty close together but luckily everyone we sat around was very friendly. Over all the Service was great and the Food was OUTSTANDING. I would love to go on a date or have cocktails there again sometime!!!"

  • "We enjoyed our time at metropole. The service and atmosphere was wonderful. The appetizers and salads were excellent but the entree was mediocre. The Amish chicken was overcooked, a bit dried out. The cocktails, wine and coffee were excellent. Disappointed that main course was blasé. We will try one more time and hope for a better entree experience. If not we will always go for the gin with homemade tonic, the best!"

  • "We thought the food was mediocre. The pork chops had little flavor. The starters were okay and different which was a nice touch. The place is very noisy which makes conversation even at a four-top pretty tough. Overpriced!"

  • "I love any revival of the past in Cincinnati. I appreciate the energy to renewing downtown. Such an easy dining experience. Now if you could just bring back the original Hathaway's , and the Cricket."

  • "The experience we had was wonderful. Service, food, and the ambience were the best. Beautiful restaurant. If you have time you need to check out the art. The restrooms are modern and also beautiful. Extremely clean."

  • "I have written a longer review on Yelp, but the short version is that service was atrociously slow and the restaurant knew we had tickets to the theatre. It took over 10 minutes to bring our cocktails at 5:30 when there were only a few tables & the apology from the server should have been the first sign that 2 hours would not be enough time for a salad, burger and dessert. It took over 30 minutes to receive the one dessert that came AFTER the bill was brought to the table, and the lovely lemon cotton candy was given to other diners, but not us. Silly, but I was really looking forward to that! I paid with cash, otherwise we might still be sitting at the table waiting for the server. Burnt carrot salad was delicious! Grilled broccoli great."

  • "We loved this place. Excellent waiter, who was so knowledgeable and nice. Suggested a great Spanish red wine to go with our meal; loved the truffle goat cheese, smoked grapes (who would have known?) and the tartare was incredible. We tried the smoked pork, smoked chicken (my son says this is the best chix he ever had) the filet and the salmon. Not a loser in the bunch. Dessert apple fritter, also excellent. Plan on returning soon, can't say enough about the chef's talent and great atmosphere!"

  • "This was our second visit to Metropole. Again, they did not let us know when our table was ready. Our food was just fair. We were charged for a bottle of wine instead of a glass. It was hard to talk to the other diners at our table because of the noise level. There are too many good restaurants in Cincinnati to go to this one again!"

  • "Located directly across from the Aronoff Center in downtown Cincinnati, this was the perfect restaurant choice for pre or post theater dinner. A very fresh, creative, local menu, the selection is limited, but the quality and presentation is amazing. A treat and 21C right next door (Museum Hotel) is the perfect compliment. Metropole is fun for people-watching too. An energetic crowd...a night you'll never forget!"

  • "Three scallops for $29? Although very tasty, way over-priced. Our server was poor relative to his peers. The servers for the tables to our left and right were much more informative and attentive than ours. I was over-all disappointed with our experience."

  • "Really interesting and deliciously prepared food. The portion size is perfect. Our waiter was friendly and very attentive without being pushy or overbearing. A little noisy for a group of 5 to talk over a round table but the vibe was worth it."

  • "Small bar but big on good conversation. Great house-cured meat and local cheese. Decent mark up on the wine. Chef out on the floor paying attention to the customers. Great experience all the way around."

  • "Not all that it's hyped up to be. Service was okay and not great. That's the way I felt about the food as well. It is an interesting environment with the art gallery and the penguins but it wouldn't survive if it were in NYC. I asked for a special table since it was a special occasion and was given a regular four-top in the middle of the room next to a loud table when the restaurant was not particularly busy.. The food was interesting but not fantastic. The burger, the appetizers and the other food was not as good or beautiful as it is touted to be or looks the photos in one of Cincinnati's magazines. Stick to Local 127, Sotto or Nada. They are all better in every way."

  • "From beginning to end, the meal was delicious and well-paced. The server was very knowledgeable and kind--even telling us that on Friday nights, the Aronoff shows start 30 minutes later. We ordered the charcuterie to start, which was amazing with charred olives and radishes, teewurst, and a lovely cheese hilariously named the wheel of awesome. As a finish, they brought out these smoked grapes. Sounds odd, but were literally like drinking a glass of smoky cab. We liked them a lot and our server overheard; without prompting, Barbara brought us more. I ordered salmon, my mother, the scallops, my sister-in-law, the steak, while my brother ordered the double cheeseburger. And this is when the miracle occured, as the table became silent. Recommend!"

  • "I think the atmosphere was wonderful and the museum was a plus. It gave us something to do after dinner. Though our server was attentive and made suggestions, it put me off when he came by to pick up the check we just signed and then asked if we valet parked. He wanted to know if we wanted him to get our car. My husband still had to finish his drink. I felt like he was rushing us out of there so he can have the table filled. Besides that, our food was good. The burnt carrot salad was delicious but a little bland. The Chaat was ok. The bison/beef burger was cooked medium not medium well as we asked. My husband did like his steak. Overall, it was a good experience."

  • "Food was excellent. Waiter very knowledgeable about menu and had great suggestions. Noise level too loud for us and we practically sat on top of our neighbors! Tables way too close together. Would not pick for a romantic night out."

  • "Somehow I had managed to live into my forties and never eaten a Rutabaga. Well that changed with one sip of Metropole's delightful rutabaga soup. Oh My Stars! Truly the entire meal was a fan favorite from the very first taste of the smoked butter & bread to the last decadent bite of the flour less chocolate cake. I have and will continue to rave about this unique dining experience. I loved the juxtaposition of the casual server attire and fireplace cooking hearth with the fine dining food and service. It struck a perfect note of comfort and delight! Way to go 21c"

  • "The wood cooking is awesome!. Only problem I had was the apps - little skimpy on portion size. More of a tasting then anything else. Octopus was incredible. Great bourbon list - loved the eagle rare!! Thanks!"

  • "Flew from NYC to Cincy for a business mtg and was pleased to be able to get a reservation at what was billed as the top new restaurant in the city. Made sure to order the signature dishes of the charred carrots and octopus. Really! Not sure what CIncinnatans find so special about charred the charred carrots. I think I could recreate them on my stove quite easily. And please, if you are going to feature octopus, make sure it is fresh! Tasty enough, but had the consistency of rubber, meaning, it has been days since it was swimming. As my wife reminded me, what do you expect in Cincinnati!"

  • "We ate at Metrople before a show at the Aronoff. The location was great and the food was amazing. My favorite was the burnt carrot salad. Our waiter Matthew was excellent. The ambiance was warm and inviting. We gave ourselves plenty of time before the show for dinner and it was well worth it. We would have gone back after the show if it wasn't a Sunday evening. I highly recommend Metrople."
