A word from Mesob Ethiopian Restaurant
Mesob Ethiopian Restaurant of Montclair, NJ is a favorite for both vegans & meat lovers with its authentic Ethiopian food. All of our foods are prepared with imported Ethiopian spices prepared daily. The friendly staff and warm decor makes Mesob the perfect place to relax with family and friends. Our Injera, a delicious sourdough Ethiopian flat bread that you wrap your food with, makes Mesob a favorite with kids, where it’s a treat to “eat with your hands.” (but we also have silverware, if you prefer!) Diner Reviews
  • "Have been dining at Mesob for a few years. Have never been disappointed. The staff is very friendly and always willing to make a suggestion when we want to try anything new. We haven't quite worked our way through the entire menu - but, we surely are trying. I've recommended Mesob to several co-workers - they have tried Mesob and now they are addicts - just like myself. Mesob is a two times a month craving. Awesome experience each and every time. BRAVO!!!"

  • "I had heard about MESOB, but was a bit skeptical about the whole "eating with your hands" concept. It didn't seem to have much appeal to me. However, I did a 360 on this one. This weekend, I along with a group of 4 other friends and family celebrated a birthday at MESOB. The atmosphere was very tranquil, the staff was warm and friendly and the décor was simple and beautiful. I looked at the menu and decided on the vegetarian sampler, but then realized I would have to request a fork, since I am gluten free and would be unable to eat the bread like product provided (apologies..the formal name escapes me right now) The waitress assured me that she would provide a gluten free option, which she did. The food was amazing!!!"

  • "We had been to this resturant many times before and loved it ! The service was always ok nothing great BUT the food was always good and they offer vegan/ vegatarian food. Unfortunately, our dinner last Saturday was HORRIBLE.Not only was the server non exist and night they blended our meat and vegatarian food together. Normally they place the plate in the table and ask where we would like the food, since we dine with individuals who do and don't eat meat it was a relief to be in a place that is respectful. Saturday night our food came already on the plate and the women food runner didn't even state what everything was just placed it in front of us, touching and mixed together. It was horrible and two people didn't even eat Disappoinment"

  • "Genuinely sweet and caring staff, delicious food, wonderful ambiance, what more could you ask! It's interesting to share a plate—makes for a great evening with new friends or old. BYO, I recommend a white like Sancerre or Oysterbay Sauvignon Blanc or a light bodied red. Have a great time!"

  • "Have been to Mesob a few times, and it seems to get better each time. Cannot pretend to remember exactly what we ate other than asking for the "Taste of Mesob" and letting our server make recommendations. All were outstanding. My wife was a fan of the shrimp; I loved the various lamb & beef dishes. Desserts were okay, but really liked the cookies."

  • "I am new to New Jersey and went here on a date. As soon as you walk in, you take in all of the varying aromas. It smells like heaven. While waiting for our table, I noticed that it's BYOB so I quickly walked up Bloomfield Avenue and got a great bottle of wine to pair with dinner. This was hands down the best Ethiopian/Eritrean food I've ever had. Really delicious. Nice ambience and courteous service. I will definitely be back."

  • "This was just what I needed to relax with good friends for lunch. Our waitress was fabulous! She was full of smiles and was so helpful to the 3 of us who had never been there before. She was able to make suggestions for the visit as well as for the future. I can't wait to come again."

  • "Have dined at Mesob many times - have always left extremely happy and extremely full. The sensory delights begin on entry - the spice aroma is intense and delicious. The food is uniformly excellent -their injera is fantastic. Go with a large group and try as many dishes as possible. There is plenty to delight both vegetarians/vegans and carnivores. There are many fine restaurants in Montclair, but we haven't found any we love as much as Mesob."

  • "The food was great and so was the ambience. It was perfect for either a romantic night or a night out with the girls. The only thin I recommend is scheduling a reservation."

  • "Went on Valentines day with my girlfriend. The service was great, the restaurant was quiet, which made conversation easy of course. The food was not too bad. Both me and my girlfriend wanted to try something new and we both enjoyed the food for the most part. The coffee was fantastic, as was dessert. Would recommend for someone trying a new experience."

  • "I really like this place. I was here for the second time on Sunday for their once a month brunch. It was fun and interesting and delicious. I'd never heard of Ethiopian brunch before and was delighted to try something new and to have it be as nice as this was. The service here makes me very happy. One example; there is a special type of coffee that they roast here themselves and when the waitress brought out the still hot beans so that we could experience them it was really exciting, partly I think because she was excited about it too. Every time I've come to Mesob I look forward to going back."

  • "As many of you may know, there is no need for utensils. You eat with your hands; we weren't offered utensils but I saw others using forks so you can probably get them if you ask. The food is served on a large, crepe-like bread (injera) and you tear off pieces of the bread and dip it in the food. Delicious! The space is serene and beautiful; and the service very good. I would definitely go back. The menu has many choices --lamb, beef, chicken, seafood and vegetarian. The seasoning can be made mild, medium or spicy. I also ordered a beef appetizer that was very similar to an Indian samosa. Light, flaky dough around spicy shredded beef that was amazing! It's BYOB so the total bill wasn't too bad. (It averages $16-24 per entree)."

  • "I first encountered Ethiopian food in Berkeley, CA, 30 years ago. It was delicious. Ever since then (maybe 3 or 4 times over the intervening years), whenever I've encountered an Ethiopian restaurant, I try it. A few years ago, I started commuting to Montclair every month or so and quickly discovered Mesob. I now go there at least once, sometimes twice, every time I'm in town. I think the food is simply outstanding, the service is always prompt and usually warm and welcoming, and the decorations and ambiance make you feel like you've stepped into another more colorful, fragrant world. I eat there for both lunch and dinner and encourage anyone to go there."

  • "We didn't like the spice in the foods we ordered nor eating with our hands, Service was friendly, and the resto was full when we left at 8 pm. The lamb was much too spicy although I asked it to be toned down and pieces of grizzle were left in the preparation. As for the mushroom entree, it was bathed in too much sauce. However, we might try it again since the owner was charming and welcoming."

  • "The special menu for their 10th anniversary was put together very well, and their desserts had the rigth amount of sweetness. We loved their "shai" tea.The waitresses made you feel welcome and we loved their beautiful Ethiopian dresses. The music was a little loud for my taste but, I understood that this was a celebration. I'll definitely come back ."

  • "We went to celebrate their tenth and will be there for the 11th and often in between. Great for and friendly service. They really CARE about what they are doing. Authentic food prepared with pride and love. Remember, you should be eating only with your fingers to enjoy it the most."

  • "A great Ethiopian BYOB restaurant. Compared to the amount of crepe they serve, the amount of meat and vegetable is a bit small. The servers were very friendly and knowledgable source when you order some of exotic foods."

  • "I never had Ethiopian food until I went to Mesob and now it is a place I crave to go! The food is always fantastic and it is a fun experience eating without utensils. The service is good and often I have had the son of the owners/cooks as my server, who is very kind and obviously informative! My only wish is that the lighting was a little better. At many tables it is just too dark."

  • "My husband and I went on Saturday night for the first time. The waiter was very helpful and we actually let him select for us. The food was freshly prepared and very tasty. Some of the dishes reminded us of lighter, fresher, indian food. We don't like to go for Indian very often although we love it (too much cream and ghee that are included in most dishes we like). This was the perfect place to enjoy food that wasn't rich or heavy but was instead healthy, flavorful, and plentiful. We got a vegetarian sampler and especially loved the Shiro (pureed chickpea) and Dinich Wat (potato). The injera bread was so interesting and delicious -- like a sourdough pancake. Highly recommend and will definitely be back."
