Diner Reviews
  • "We had the budin azteca vegetales and the beet salad. Both were great. The budin azteca was a new dish for me. The layers of tortilla and cheese comprised a much more delicate dish than I expected--nice surprise. The atmosphere was vibrant, but the lighting and table setup on the second floor made the place feel intimate. We had a great time and will be back."

  • "My boyfriend and I visited Meso Maya for the first time for a belated birthday celebration. We had a great time. The food was excellent; I had the vegetable enchiladas (sans cheese) and he had the shrimp tacos. We were both incredibly pleased. We split the avocado margarita, which was delicious, and shared the dessert sampler, which was exquisite. The service was prompt and friendly. It was a bit noisy and crowded, so not as romantic a setting as we were hoping for, but we knew that was going to be the case and it didn't really bother us. It was fun to see the big groups of families having a great time. It's a place for everyone!"

  • "The good was very good. Appetizers were all great. Main courses had lots of flavor. Desserts surprising tasty. Service was exceptional. Just a fabulous night."

  • "It was really loud. Food always good. Service can be spotty. Sometimes it is great. Sometimes it is slow. Restaurant week menu had one choice... Very disappointing."

  • "We went for our first time during Restaurant Week. We ordered from the regular menu. Oh Maya! Everything was delicious! The mole chicken enchilada and sweet corn tamale were amazing. My wife loved the Avocado margarita. The top shelf was darn good too. Our waitperson, Eli, was very friendly and helpful. Being located adjacent to the iconic El Fenix in downtown Dallas seemed rather unusual. Nevertheless, the place was rocking with young and old(er) alike. We now know why. The food and service were "outstanding". We frequent Uptown so we will definitely make a point to go back. We want to try the patio and their taqueria, La Ventana, too."

  • "Went for their 2014 Restaurant Week menu and was not let down. Amazing food, great service, and of course unique and flavorful margaritas."

  • "Awesome food and service, but the restaurant can be loud! Not great for a romantic evening but great to go out with friends. Highly recommended. Try the avocado Margarita - it is terrific!"

  • "The food is so delicious every time you get something different it's always wonderful, and love the service."

  • "While a fast-paced energetic environment is appealing, this MesoMaya location is best described as noisy and busy. The service was hurried and slow at the same time. The server was quick to the table but slow the get the drinks and food to the table. The noise level was so high it was hard to hear. I love the Meso Maya on Preston. I think I will stick with that location and leave this spot behind."

  • "While the menu boasts big flavors and interesting preparation, in actuality, the food is rather bland and boring. Good for those looking for a chain style restaurant but not a cocktail or culinary adventure. Service was also poor and pushy, with the server dropping our check before even asking about another round of drinks and dessert."

  • "This restaurant is consistently good. The food is great, the atmosphere is lively. Yummy chips and salsa!"

  • "The queso blanco and salsa were awesome to start. I had carnitas tacos that were maybe the best I've ever eaten, I got a sweet corn chicken tamale (now this was only ok to me, I didn't love the sauce, but everything else was so great, that's ok). My husband got carne asada and he said it was amazing along with a side of elote con crema that was sweet and delish. I also had the Serrano strawberry margarita that was yummy and had some spice. We finished with a blueberry cake baked in a skillet and Mexican vanilla ice cream with blueberry drizzle... I'm so very satisfied with the entire experience. We ate on the patio - perfect weather for a leisurely meal and good conversation."

  • "Awesome food and awesome service!! We really enjoyed the atmosphere of the outdoor seating, and the weather was great!"

  • "I love all types of Hispanic food. From family-owned Tex-Mex to Salvadorean, to Mexican Seafood. Why didn't I know of Meso Maya before now. It was delicious all the way thru. Throughout the whole evening we were saying what a find. Go! Enjoy!"

  • "In a state where you'll find Tex-mex on every corner. It was nice to eat Mexican food with central mexico spices. The avocado margarita was awesome! The Carne Asada was perfectly cooked and was accompanied by delicious beans and a perfectly cooked cornbread muffin. The outdoor patio in downtown Dallas is enclosed on all sides. No road noise and fumes to deal with but no view except straight up. I loved this hidden gem!!"

  • "The food is outstanding, from the salsa to ceviche, to the tacos to the pork chop. The food is the reason to go and the food is the reason go back...even with suspect service. Servers and staff struggled mightily with busing the table as well as basic service technique. For example, for our appetizer the waiter placed the appetizer plate on top of the menus when there was plenty of room to put the plates to the side. Also, entree's came out before the table was bused from the appetizers. Further, initially the servers seemed to want to just move over the appetizer plate to place the entree plate rather than actually busing it. With better service this review would have been a 4 or a 5 overall."

  • "Meso Maya is our "go to" restaurant when we want a very yummy meal without spending a fortune. The wait staff, the hostesses who greet you, the managers who make the rounds to ensure everything is running smoothly. Meso Maya is absolutely one of our favorite restaurants."

  • "Lovely atmosphere especially if you dine outside in the cooler months. The service is incredible, never pushy or in a hurry. Food is great. the guacamole is fantastic. If you like margaritas try the Serrano strawberry margarita!!!!! Yummy!"

  • "Delicious food and the service for our large group was amazing. We were paced perfectly for a lunch group not rushed but definitely not slow."

  • "The Patio was awesome. It is an interior patio so you don't get much of a view, but if the weather is nice, it is a great spot."

  • "The food and atmosphere were good, but the service was terrible. The worst service experience I've had in last 5 years. Our waiter made independent decisions re which dishes that we ordered would served vs not. Only when questioned about why he didn't bring out something that we ordered, would he volunteer why he made unsolicited decisions for us (e.g. Didn't bring the soup one of our guests ordered because "the plate is too big and won't fit with entree plate", brought flan versus the cheesecake ordered because "you should try flan, it's better"--when reinforced that we wanted what was ordered, he replied: "oh, well we're out of the cheesecake anyway, so I don't have it....but you don't like flan?"). Bizarre and ineffective service."

  • "I noted when rating the noise level for this review, that the the rating went from quiet to energetic and that is a saying it mildly! Restaurant has a great party vibe, but not too good when you want to have an intimate conversation, so keep that in mind! Food was fantastic! Wait staff was very engaging and spot on in their recommendations. Would definitely go there again!"

  • "Good service. Seated immediatly upon arrival. Betabelles salad was very good. Waitress was available, attentative, and helpful. Patio setting was comfortable and unique for dinner dinning."

  • "The crab and shrimp enchiladas are very good. The top shelf margarita was on point and just how I like my margaritas."

  • "All entrees sampled were amazing. Pork chop and elotes were particularly delicious."

  • "The food is good. The servers are well-trained and professional. My frustration was with the seating. We were seated a table too small for our group, though a specific table was requested in the Open Table reservation and in a follow-up phone call to the restaurant. (Group of 10 at a table for six.) I had previous good experiences here, which led me to book Meso Maya for this group. So the experience was disappointing."

  • "Meso Maya has a very interesting non-TexMex menu. Wide variety of very interesting dishes and flavors. If you are tired of traditional TexMex give it a try. The downtown location is very accessible with great parking close by. The service was great and the noise level for a late business lunch was minimal. I highly recommend Meso Maya."

  • "We went to Meso Maya for brunch on a Sunday around 11. It wasn't terribly crowded, which was nice. We were a party of 8 (4 kids). The kids menu is pretty limited, but there were options for customizing items off the regular menu to suit their tastes. Service wasn't super speedy, but it was adequate. The food was much better than I remembered, so that was a pleasant surprise. All in all, we had a great visit and would return."

  • "Made an appointment for 8:30 I get there and they seat people that arrive without appointments, before us. I patiently waited for 20 minutes and ask the hostess if they have anything available yet. Magically they have a booth available after seeing me and my party stand in front of them for 20 minutes. The waiter was fast, but made indirect flirtatious comments towards my wife! Luckily for him I shrugged it off."

  • "I decided to go here based on internet reviews. I am glad I did. The vegetarian dishes are very tasty and the wine list, though small, has diverse wines and prices ranges. There were three of us at dinner and each was very happy with what they ordered. Though this is not a foodie destination, it is definitely a cut above most restaurants in uptown."

  • "We eat out often (all the time). We critique every location and every meal. Rarely does a meal out complete without a critical flaw. The meal and experience at Meso Maya was superior. Food, service and ambiance was outstanding. We sat on the patio which was very comfortable for July evening due to the misters. The walled in nature of the patio was awesome. Our waiter was skilled in his art and also seemed to be a really smart guy (which helps sometimes). And finally the food was excellent. Well done. We will definitely go back soon."

  • "I took my family there from out of town and it was fabulous as always! Our only complaint is that it was so loud that we couldn't hear each other."

  • "We love the variety on the menu with specialty items as well some semi Tex Mex food. The service is attentive and the selection of tequila drinks is good. The Mexican martini is nice without all the calories of the margarita."

  • "Tried it last time in Dallas and made reservations this trip. Great place to take clients for very good Mexican food. Staff is very friendly and attentive. Noise level is high, but not too much as to not hear your party."

  • "If you want the same old Mexican food, don't go here. We visited on father's day and totally enjoyed their chips and salsa. We tried the guacamole and queso (white), again excellent. We tried Brisket tacos and enchiladas, salmon and carne asada. All were prepared beautifully and full of flavor with adobe sauce and flavorful toppings. Try the blueberry cake with ice cream. Much like a cobbler. We also had an excellent waiter who continued to check on our needs."

  • "I simply LOVED this place!!! The chips were fresh and the salsa was over the top, not too spicy and great flavor! I ordered the homemade sangria swirl margarita and I daresay it is one of the best I have ever had!! Three of the four of us ordered BUDIN AZTECA, a layered cheese and tortilla dish. At the waitress's recommendation I chose the Carne (tender tenderloin chuncks) with a red sauce that was to die for!!! I really mean it!!! My husband had the shrimp and the friend had the chicken ... both with a green tomatillo sauce that was delicious as well! To top the dinner off we shared the sampling of the 3 desserts they offer ... all 3 were over the top!! I would definitely return!!!!! DEFINITELY!!!"
