A word from Mesa Veracruz Coastal Cuisine
Chef-Owners Raul and Olga Reyes come from Alvarado, Veracruz, a town built on a mile-wide strip of land with the Gulf of Mexico on one side and a brackish lagoon on the other. With the bounty of the sea close at hand, fresh seafood is a way of life in Alvarado.

It is this food that Raul and Olga brought to Dallas with their former restaurant, La Palapa Veracruzana, which the Dallas Observer named the Best Mexican Restaurant in Dallas and that Pegasus News called "fresh, flavorful, unique…a destination for people who like to eat food and talk about it a lot afterwards."

Mesa offers the same authentic coastal cuisine Raul and Olga have been cooking and eating since their childhood.

Diner Reviews
  • "Fine flavors and freshness. Worthy of a return visit."

  • "Great little spot in Oak Cliff. Great original spin on Mexican cuisine. Recommend the Strawberry Margaritas! Not sweet, but relish."

  • "The place was really nice with a very nice indoor patio area, which is where we sat. The food was OK. The ceviche was good, but the paella was not very good. My mother felt it was way to fishy flavored and I felt it was too soupy. When I got the dish, I thought it was a soup, but found the rice under the liquid. Finally, the service was not good. The server was nice, but I felt he was not happy with us being there. It is like he was serving us robotically, but not acknowledging our existence."

  • "Had several friends visiting from all over the country this weekend. Wanted to take them someplace delicious, local, and fun for dinner, and Mesa really fit the bill. The ceviche, guacamole, and chiptole shrimp were delicious, as were the margaritas. Highly recommend!"

  • "wasn't impressed. birthday celebration on mothers day. first to be seated for brunch, not busy at all. waited forever for drinks and food. people who sat next to us, seated way after we were, were served their apps before us. our 2nd round of drinks sat on the bar until one of the people in my party went to get them. when our food came out, 1/2 the plate was warm, the other 1/2 cold. didn't want to send back bc wasn't sure how long it would take….the food would have been good if it had been served hot we made several attempts to get noticed/service. nothing made the situation better.were given 2 comp'ed desserts but by then, was too late. probably won't be back. too bad.. interior is beautiful and well done, service was disappointing. • "What a gem in Oak Cliff. All our food was outstanding. The Guacamole and homemade chips were very tasty. The selection of entrees were great and both our entrees were presented very nicely on the plate. But the best part was the taste of the food. All of the staff were very friendly and we will certainly be going back soon. "

  • "They did not have our reservation and it took them 45 minutes to get us seated. The food was Great, the restaurant was dirty, the bathrooms were nasty. I would give a higher rating, but I worry about the cleanness of the restaurant."

  • "Great neighborhood restaurant with a fresh take on regional Mexican cooking. The fish stew and the lobster enchiladas were both outstanding. Also, nice flan tinged with orange. Very elegant, local place."

  • "The food was delicious. We loved the chips ana I had Lobster enchilada and was great. The waiter and service were friendly and helpful, The spicy margarita was delightful Will definitely go back to try other dishes"

  • "Our first try of this great restaurant was shortly after it first opened. I enjoyed the meal, but my wife didn't. After that she went a couple times with groups and really enjoyed it. I hadn't had a chance to go back until I got a reservation for Valentines evening. First, the food is visually impeccable. Their presentation is really nice. The taste is even better. I had the trout and my wife had the well known lobster and crab enchiladas. Both were great! We also had couple cocktails each, both were very good. The service was good, not great but good enough for our normal 20% tip. The waiter was attentive once he stopped by and our plates were removed and water filled accordingly. We end the meal with their chocolate tres leches"

  • "I am happy that you have another great reason to come to south Dallas & Jefferson. Food was very good. I have never been here before, so I was happy that I scored so well on Valentines. The musicians were quality; they played a unique brand of music that seemed a little more classical than a standard mariachi band. I had the lobster enchiladas. My wife had the pork. We were both very happy. Our waiter was very engaging. You accommodated my reservation even though I was 30 minutes late. Thank you for that. The pricing was a little higher than I would have wanted. I wonder if that was a Valentines Day pricing. We will be back but the pricing might keep us from coming as frequently. We were coming from Coppell, TX."

  • "My mother & I wanted to have dinner when she was coming into town fora visit, but it was difficult to find reservations at many places since it was Valentine's Day. But Mesa was able to accommodate us very easily, and 2 friends joined us for dinner as well. The food was excellent as always. The ceviche rocked, and my lobster enchiladas were delicious. Our friends enjoyed the experience as well and said they would definitely be coming back."

  • "I don't Say WoW lightly me and the wife try 2 restaurants we have never tried before every week of the year. This is a find out of our list so far it is #1 for food quality preparation taste and imagination. Best real Mexican food in Dallas and this comes from a massive list competition over 3 years. notables Ceviche, Huachinango Ala Veracruzana, Enchiladas De Langosta, Platanos Fritos. Drinks were top notch. Truth is this place blows Javier's on Coal Ave. AWAY hands down no contest."

  • "This restaurant is not located in the more gentrified Bishop Arts District, but the parking and street, despite being somewhat rundown, felt very safe. Inside, the exposed brick lends a very down to earth feel to the restaurant. The wait staff were welcoming and very knowledgeable about the menu. The food was excellent. There was plenty of variety at our table of 8 and everything was delicious. Particular delights were the Red Snapper, and ceviche appetizer. If you want something much more than traditional Tex-Mex, this is your place."

  • "(idea from OpenTable). When I got to the Street, I was nervous. I am somewhat of a foodsnob, so I figured no way this place was going to nice. However as soon as we walked in, I felt better. The place is cool looking inside and we were greeted by friendly people. The menu was simple but had breadth. We were a group of 5 (4 to 49). Everyone left happy. The guac and chips were great. Worth the price. I had the chipotle shrimp dish and it was excellent and fairly priced for the dish. I forget what others got but every plate was cleared except my daughter's dish which was a black bean and cheese appetizer which I tasted and liked but was a little different tasting for her. Good dulce de leches cake for dessert. I would go back."

  • "This Mexican gem offers some of the best Mexican dishes I have tasted north of El Rio Grande. The Cochinita Pibil is to die for."

  • "Mesa Veracruz was tasty...my BF ordered the Mole - based on other's reviews. It was delicious, but on the sweet side. The dish was only served with dark meat (we weren't asked for meat preference). I'm glad I didn't get it. The pieces were also small and served with a small portion of rice. The mole was overpriced for the serving size. The Chochinita Pibil (Mayan style slow roast pork) dish was a tasty treat with a lot of meat, except for the two big lups of fat included. The tortillas were fresh and made to order. My sides were rice, black beans, and sauteed purple onions; delicious & complemented my dish well but the habanero chile salsa was MIA. Food presentation is well done, staff was friendly, quick to help us."

  • "Food was good but wine selection is disappointing. If I go back I'll try one of the tasty-sounding margaritas."

  • "Always a delight--excellent and subtle seasonings and flavors. The mole is a specialty and is excellent. Definitely not Tex-Mex."

  • "We had heard a lot about this place but took us a long time to get there. Was worth the wait! Food was awesome, service was great, and the people/staff were very friendly. We brought some friends who are new to Dallas and wanted "mexican" food. They had been dissappointed so far with what they found in DFW. This place knocked their socks off! We're coming back and bringing more folks. Some neat stuff: Modello Especiale on tap! A half block form Texas Theatre. Easy parking."

  • "When I booked the reservation, I asked to be seated in the back, "outdoor" portion of the restaurant, as it's quieter there. My husband has trouble hearing in noisy restaurants. When we arrived, we were told that the back had been reserved by a private party and were seated in an area where my husband could not hear anything that was said. After dinner, I went to the back and saw many open tables and NO private party. It was obvious that each table was independent and there would have been plenty of room to seat us there."

  • "I didn't know what to expect since i got different reviews as many negatives as positives. When we arrived I was even more worried because of location. But as soon as I stepped in and was greeted and asked if we had a reservation which I did I knew that this was going to be a good experience. The people in the restaurant were sophisticated and you knew that they were there for the good food. And sure enough it did not disappoint. My husband had the carne asada, my cousin had a shrimp dish and I had the red snapper dish all very good, I had read where the portions were small and that it was pricey. We are so used to eating big huge plate portions, We also had the sampler appetizer and although pricey it was good. I would go back"

  • "Mesa is one of the most highly reviewed and rated restaurants in the DFW metroplex, and those reviews are earned and then some. This is some of the most earnest, high-quality, unfussy, unique food in the city. The chefs' heart comes through on every dish. The mole is the best I've ever had. One of the chefs came out to greet everyone at each table and ask how the food was, which I always find to be a nice touch. Finally, the menu could easily tack on $10-15 to each menu item and the food would still be worth it - at the current prices, I think it's a bargain!"

  • "Great place, don't really like the back portion of the restaurant, the front is much more intimate...."

  • "This quaint little gem is hidden behind a questionable facade but was definitely worth the derive from downtown Dallas. From the ceviche to all our entrees, the food was authentic and delicious with the unusual twist that makes it memorable!"

  • "Found Mesa through Trip Advisor, and it was so easy to make a last minute ressie through Open Table. My sister "won" the ordering contest with the Chicken Mole Enchiladas. So delish. The atmosphere was lively, and a bit local, which we love. Thanks for a great evening."

  • "No brisket tacos. That's reason enough to make a stop. Unique menu underwhlems in the end though. Drive west to Revolver Taco Lounge for a experience that's a star above this in every category."

  • "I took my mom here who was in town for the weekend. I had heard great reviews about Mesa and wanted to take my mom somewhere she hadn't been before. We both ordered the lobster enchiladas, and they were to die for! Plenty of food for one person, but we both cleared our plates because they were so good we didn't want to leave anything. They had some great looking cocktails that I will go back and try soon."
    Dined on 8/31/2013
  • "Red Snapper was nicely seared, served over a bed of chard, rice and a slightly spicy, tangy sauce with olives, tomatoes, onions, capers...exceptional. Others in our group had the pork, also very nice, jicama salad, enmolados (also exceptional - their mole is really good, maybe a little on the sweet side but not too much), guac. Good bar and acceptable wine list."
    Dined on 8/30/2013
  • "While the flavor of the food and the quality of the cocktails lives up to the hype, the service rather hampered the pacing of the meal. We ordered the guacamole for an appetizer and the Lobster Enchiladas and Chicken Mole as our entrees with a side of vegetables to share. The server forgot to place the order for the vegetables and by the time we received them we were almost finished with our dinners making me wish I could have traded them for a desert by that time. We also didn't get our second cocktails until the end of the meal which again made us regret ordering them. By that time we would have rather had after dinner drinks. Mesa Veracruz has the food to account for their price point, but the poor service harms the overall experience."

  • "This place is fantastic. The mole sauce is unbelievable, you could drink it with a straw. Owner Raul Reyes is from Alvarado, Veracruz and took the time to talk with us about the interesting history behind some of their homemade recipes. One of my favorite places in Dallas."

  • "Super delicious lobster encheladas, shrimp civeche and melt-on-your mouth tres leches desert. Don't let the neighborhood fool you, it's super good and on the pricier side of moderate."
    Dined on 8/17/2013
  • "First- it is not in the Bishop Arts district. We thought we would walk around the district before and after dinner. It is an additional drive to get to the hub of the district. Second- the service was somewhere between slow and non-existent! Our waiter was more interested in talking to bar patrons than serving seated customers. I had no sense there was a manager present. Third, the only memorable thing about the food was it was not tex-mex! Good but wholly undifferentiated."

  • "Food and service were excellent. Recommend the spicy margarita."

  • "Everything about this place was good; the food, the service, the environment. We definitely had a fun time and have already recommended this place to several friends."

  • "Can't say enough about this great place to eat! Food was excellent, All four of us had the Mole Chicken because we had heard so much about it! The Mole was extra special matching some of the best in LA! Chicken was tender, fell off the bone and most flavorful. The rice was delightfully tasteful. Drinks were unique and good. We are taking friends back again next week."
    Dined on 8/9/2013
  • "Food was great. I had the shrimp, and the mole sauce was just the right amount of hot. The chairs we stiff and too upright, very uncomfortable. Our waiter could not get our drink orders right. He came back several times with we don't have this, and we don't have that. It's a nice family owned and run restaurant, but hiring the clueless nephew (or whatever) is not a good idea. I will definitely go back and give the staff a second chance, cause the food is so fresh and delicious."
