Diner Reviews
  • "Mes Reves is an elegant place to dine with fabulous tasting food and a very responsive wait staff."

  • "Excellent & consistent food and service at Mes Reves. We will return ... for the sweet breads & dessert (bread pudding, scrumptious) ... and for the mains, like steak au poivre, the Cornish hen, and the "specials.""

  • "Really enjoyed our dinner here! From apps to dessert everything was at a high quality but reasonable price! BYOB keeps bill in a nice zone and I would definitely recommend this place!"

  • "My wife wanted to celebrate my birthday, but I know she wanted to go to a restaurant with a good duck entrée. After seeing the reviews for Mes Reves I decided to give it a shot and book the reservation. We arrived a little late to the restaurant but was surprised to see that we were the first diners for the evening. The decor was welcoming and the staff very friendly. My wife loved the Pan Seared Duck Breast, but did not really care for the grilled endive. I had the Pan Seared Salmon and it was cooked perfectly and was very flavorful. I ordered the Bread Pudding for desert but was surprised to receive chocolate souffle as well with a birthday candle. Needless to say we are already planning our next date night at Mes Reves."

  • "Brought another couple this time, and was able to try a few more dishes...the mushroom tart and scallop appetizers were perfect, and the scallops over risotto entre special was outstanding. The quality and creativity of Mes Reves is on a par with the best of Montclair."

  • "On a request through OT, Tran designed a special celebration meal for us that displayed the highlights of his current menu and technique. His cuisine has always not just pleased but has demonstrated the deeper qualities of fine, contemporary cooking - from his rich sauces, to the delicate preparation of seafoods, to the lightness of soufflés, to proper plating temperatures and visual presentation. Attentive service completes the picture. Try the fois gras, skate, scallops, rabbit when available, and chocolate soufflé. Few restaurants in the region demonstrate relentless attention to craft, and this is one of them."

  • "Food had to be sent back but it was the inexperience of the server that was a real downer."

  • "We tried Mes Reves after a friend recommended it. Tried to walk in without a reservation last weekend, but it was packed. Hostess was very kind and we liked the atmosphere. We reserved online and were happy to get our preferred time. Had to laugh when we walked in and saw several people we knew from our town. Food was excellent, had the crab cake appetizer, and sea bass special with gnocchi. Chocolate soufflé was ok, I wish I had tried the vanilla instead. Will definitely be back!"

  • "Delicious, as always! I started with the foie gras, followed up by rack of lamb. My friend started with crab cakes, then vacillated between steak frites and beef bourguignon. He went with the beef bourguignon, a special, reasoning he could come back and have the steak frites (a regular menu item) any time. We are repeat visitors to this restaurant, and the hostess, waitress, and sous-chef all greeted us by name. Don't skip the souffle (chocolate or vanilla, both yummy)!"

  • "Delicious dining experience. The staff is very attentive. You can always count on a visit from the chef ! Don't forget to order the souffle. It is outstanding. This restaurant is a must for any diner who s looking for a fabulous night out."

  • "Very nice alternative to the usual Montclair spots. Our waitress Lauren was very friendly...made us feel like movie stars. The scallops appetizer was awesome, and the steak frites was as good as any you would find in a Parisian bistro. Very simple menu, but something for everyone. Only gripe is that the tables are pretty close together."

  • "This my third time there and it was as enjoyable as the first experience. I usually go during the week and was surprised to see that it was filled to capacity on a Sat. night. Also, there were specials in addition to the menu which are not offered on weeknights. We have brought different friends with us each time and they have all been pleased and said they would definitely go back which is the same with the people I have recommended it to. A winner!"

  • "Fois gras and Sweet Bread appetizers were really good, I do not normally eat sweet breads but these we great and my girlfriend loved the fois gras. I had skate wing, which I never tried before, it was really tasty with the mushrooms and couscous in a balsamic reduction it was different and satisfying. I'd love to try it in a lemon sauce with the couscous and maybe brussel sprouts or another green vegetable. My date had the venison which was perfectly cooked and heartily devoured. We had ordered the special dessert of the night chocolate soufflé served with a chamborge crème,it was fantastic!!!! This should be permanent item on their menu. (It came in vanilla too). The wait staff was pleasant but need to pay more attention to patrons."

  • "This place was great. Great atmosphere, great food, great service, and more. The owners and staff were very attentive and friendly. I lost track of time while I was there. We had appetizers (escargot, mushroom tart, calamari salad, mussels), and then steaks, lamb, and scallops. YUM!!!"

  • "Amazing experience - from walking in the door through leaving. Food was delicious - the chefs attention to detail was noted. Service was impeccable. A neighborhood gem that is definitely a must go to!"

  • "Classic but re/imagined French cuisine beautifully executed. This gem if a restaurant pulls off every dish perfectly. The chef trained at the international culinary institute and his training has taken him far. The mushroom tart is sublime. Beautifully flavored mushrooms atop a perfect flaky pastry is a symphony of incredible flavor. The salmon with the very sauce was also amazing. The vegetables and potato that garnished the dish were also amazing. Dessert was decadent and also incredible. We had the flan and the bread pudding. I will be back soon !!! BYOB at this time ."

  • "Food was enjoyable and good portions. Mussels were perfect. Lamb and Duck were well flavored & cooked perfectly. Vanilla souffle was yummy. Coffee fine. While the staff was friendly and adequate. They were not at the level of a 'fine restaurant', their presence was known and lacking expert service, but not offensive."

  • "Friendly, crowded, amazingly not too loud despite the size, nice staff, and the food was quite good--my husband had crab cakes and loved them, and also enjoyed his salmon. I had mesclun salad and steak au poivre. The steak and truffle fries were delicious; the salad dressing was a bit sweet for my taste. Greens, goat cheese, and tomatoes were very good. The bread (and herbed, slightly sweetened butter) was not what one would expect at a classic French bistro...It was more local soft Italian bread, not a nice Tom Cat or balthazar baguette or whatever...I do love bread so that's my only (minor) complaint!! We will definitely be back--very happy we tried this place."

  • "Welcome French Bistro in Northern NJ. All appetizers and entrees were very good to excellent. That said, the menu is quite limited. Would benefit from nightly / weekly specials and the addition of some bistro staples like French Onion Gratinee."

  • "Went with my husband here for date night. Did not disappoint. Have been numerous times. Always superb, byob, and friendly staff. Only thing I missed was the creme bruele used to have chocolate in it. I looked forward to it, but while very good was missing the chocolate this visit. Please bring that back Mes Reves!"

  • "We keep returning to Mes Reves for special occasions, and are always delighted. Our first visit was about a year ago, for my girlfriend's birthday - I found Mes Reves on Open Table, and decided to try it based on the great reviews, interesting menu, and being within budget for me. We also liked that one can bring wine, so we can afford excellent wine to go with the excellent food (and great service and overall pleasant ambiance.) After that first visit, it became our go - to for special occasions, and we make up special occasions just to have an excuse to go. If you go, bring wine, and if they are serving souffle for dessert, by all means get at least one for the table."

  • "This is indeed a fine French restaurant with an Asian touch. Served in a most pleasant and stylish atmosphere by a young and attentive, helpful wait staff the food is consistently excellent and fairly priced, a fine value for the high quality."

  • "My husband and I have been to Mes Reves twice and we were well impressed both times. Ambience is relaxing/modern/warm and the staff goes out of their way to make us feel like VIPs. On our last visit for our anniversary, I was a little chilly, so I put my coat over my shoulders - the owner/chef must have seen me do this and came over personally to let me know that he had adjusted the A/C! (By the way, just went to another less-than-mediocre Irish pub the other night and asked the waitress if there was some way to turn down the A/C on a 38 degree night as it was blowing on our entire party...zip). The food is so delicious. The only improvement I can think of is to add some background music - it would add to the warm atmosphere."

  • "This restaurant is a little gem tucked away on a corner in Bloomfield. Actually, we go there almost weekly. You cannot beat the food which is comparable to any fine dining restaurant in NYC. The ambiance is lovely, the service delightful and the owner and his wife warm and welcoming. The chief's dishes are off the chart delicious. Must go!"

  • "We have been here before but will not be returning. The reason: our dining partners ordered steak. One was totally inedible, the other only half edible. When the owner came by my dining partner told her she should serve better steak. Her reply was "then we would have to charge more"(patronizing). The steak cost $29 bucks. The hostess/waitperson was very nice but it did not compensate for a bad food experience. Note to owner: you should have done something besides patronize my friend, who has a sophisticated palate. Send over a flan or take the steak off the bill. Very sad and unprofessional."

  • "I've tried Mes Reves on repeated occasions and have yet to be disappointed. So far, I've had duck, skate and lamb and greatly enjoyed them. The appetizers are not quite as stellar. As for desserts, the creme brulee and the creme caramel are both quite good. The chef-owner always finds time to check in on his guests, even on a busy Saturday. So, Montclarions, make the trip to Bloomfield. You'll be pleasantly surprised."

  • "We've been here for dinners with friends, for anniversaries and most recently, a birthday celebration. We've never been disappointed. The food is consistently delicious the ambience is modern, quiet and warm, and the service is professional, attentive but never intrusive. Not an extensive menu, but the quality of what is offered is very good. Our guests on this occasion all raved about their meals and we all ordered something different, except for the mussels, which we all ordered and enjoyed! A great neighborhood restaurant. We look forward to our next meal there."

  • "Found Mes Reves on Open Table...we loved it. Went with friends who are foodies, like us and we had a great experience. Food was great, service was friendly, our waitress was definetly green but her demeanor and attentiveness made up for her inexperience. Will absolutely dine there again."

  • "Chef Quang's truly passionate about his cooking & it shows in the quality of the food! The Chilean sea bass garnished with lobster sauce and asparagus was delicious! My husband really enjoyed the scallop risotto, which was very flavorful. The desserts are not to be missed! The chocolate soufflé, the bread pudding (crispy on the outside and fluffy in the inside), the flan and the crime brûlée were all delightful! I definitely recommend Mes Reves for your next fine dining experience."
