  • "My husband and I enjoy dining at Merriman's. We do not come as often as we would like as we llve over an hour drive. All at the restaurant staff show they are pleased that we are dining with them. Their new chef, Zak is very innovative and the presentation of the food is lovely. Their pastry chef is creative. And their different Kona coffee to choose from is fun. I do miss their several types of breads that were once served, though."

I had a chance to sample a little of the meals other family members ordered and I would have a hard time deciding which was the best - they were all so good. Our server was very friendly and helpful and gave a lot of information about each of the courses. It's a bit pricey but I think you really do get what you pay for at this restaurant."

The food was very fresh and really great. The service was the best we've had this week in hawaii. I would highly recommend going here! They had a kids menu too, so we didnt have to spend a fortune to feed our kids."

  • "Dinner at 630pm. Took almost 30min to take order. Apps tasted great, except beef raviolo had more kale (spinach?) than beef. Steaks should have been med rare and med, both came out raw (purple)! Sent back. While waiting , table was almost cleared by staff who thought we were done! (Yes we had been there that long...) Wife's came out fine but mine came out well done. Mgr offered to replace piece but at that point I was not going to eat 20min after my wife's meal nor give the chef a 3rd chance to cook a steak. Excellent desserts. As comp, Mgr took off 1 steak and both desserts from menu. I would give them another chance if I revisit the island."

  • "Loved my Poke and my wife loved her fish tacos. The presentation was excellent. Our server was friendly and pleasant. The ambiance was lovely. The restaurant even treated us to dessert in honor of my wife's birthday. But I doubt I will be back. We both left lunch a bit hungry. I even ordered an extra side of rice with my meal. Why do high end restaurants serve such small portions? Roy's is another popular eatery guilty of skimpy portions. Sorry Merrimans. You do so many things right. Serve some bread or add some starch to your meals. It's an easy solution."

There are many great restaurants, and I am sure we haven't been to them all but Merriam's has become our favorite, primarily for their creative use of local ingredients. The vegetables here are as important as the protein and it is all delicious."

  • "I've been vacationing on the Big Island once or twice a year for twenty years, and I always go to Merriman's at least a couple of times per visit. It almost never disappoints. I had the ahi poke, a tomato and beet salad, the wok charred ahi, and the daily fish special (ono). Everything was great, but the salad and ono were particularly superb, excellently prepared and presented with flavors and textures that complemented one another. I can't wait to go back next week."

  • "The flavors were subtle, nuanced and yet distinctly Hawaiian. Everything was cooked to perfection. I love the fresh and local ethos which is carried out here down to the last detail. The fish and shrimp were perfectly tender. Even the poi tasted amazing. The chef's genuine passion and extraordinary talent came through in everything we ate. All the staff members we encountered were pleasant, knowledgeable and helpful. The restaurant was packed out (good going for a Sunday night in a sleepy town - an indicator of how good a restaurant it is). Service became slow and our server difficult to get hold of. That's why I don't give service 5 stars. We had to wait a while for our second order of wine and then virtually gulp it down before leaving."

  • "Great food seems to fall into two categories for me - amazing in its simplicity or amazing in its complexity. Merriman's fare falls squarely into the latter. The dishes are skillfully prepared and artistically presented, with fresh and unique local flavors adding bright and unexpected tones to the quality meats and fishes. Somewhat reminiscent of French food with its rich (if somewhat salty, but that's a plus for me) sauces and bases, but unlike most French food the portions are generous. The atmosphere (and the staff) is far from stuffy, lending a homey authenticity to the experience - fitting perfectly into the overall feeling of the Big Island. This restaurant came highly recommended by many friends, and we not disappointed,"

  • "This restaurant's gimmick is that it doesn't have a gimmick: it simply takes top end ingredients and prepares them expertly, and has them brought to your table by a pleasant and unpretentious (but very professional) staff. When we stay in the area for a week or so, this is the only restaurant that we go to twice in one trip for dinner. It has never disappointed us!"

  • "Our dinner was good, but not as good as Merriman's in Maui. We traveled 45-minutes from where we were staying on the Big Island to dine here because we had such a wonderful experience at their sister restaurant in Maui. Not only was the cuisine at a higher level in Maui, but the ambience was MUCH better because of the ocean views. This location has a small dining room with no views. The bottom line is that it still is a fine restaurant, but we had much higher expectations having dined at their other eatery in Maui."
