Diner Reviews
  • "Merriman's set the standard for service and food. If these people developed more and expanded, they would destroy their competition. Can't be beat. Too bad it's only available in this location."

  • "A fantastic restaurant with innovative use of local products delivered flawlessly by a front and back of house team of people that care passionately about what they do. Our server Jen was a 10 year veteran of Merrimans, and it was a delight to hear her depth of knowledge on the food and see a really first class wait staff in action. Really exquisite meal which has been the highlight of this Hawaii trip- Bravo Merrimans!"

  • "Took my parents and my son, who is a very picky eater. My lobster was sweet and tender, dad and the boy's steaks were well-seasoned, tender, and juicy, and mom loved her macadamia crusted monchong. She requested steamed white rice instead of the black forbidden rice and they were very gracious in accommodating her. Pacing was just right. Desserts were excellent, we split the chocolate one and the creme brûlée. Everything we ate was delicious; we'd be very tempted to order the same things again the next time we're there."

  • "Brunch was very tasty and the service was pleasant. So pleasant that it included our waitress dancing an impromptu hula for us."

  • "This was definitely the best dinner we had in Hawaii. Everything is excellent (except the bathrooms!). One of their innovations is the ability to order half-orders of entrees, if you are not very hungry, or half-orders of two things so you don't have to choose. What a great idea. Between our party of five, we had all the fish choices. I loved the ahi, but all were excellent. One of us had the filet mignon and gobbled up every bite. The prices were no higher than many other restaurants in Hawaii of far lower quality."

  • "For the total price we spent for lunch, we came out still hungry. The only thing that my party enjoyed was the fish burger. The beet salad was too small and the fish taco was just OK."
    Dined on 6/29/2014
  • "The service was fantastic. Our server, Nikki, helped us with the menu to find choices that had no garlic. She even had the chef modify the vegetable so that it would not have garlic. The food was very good, particularly the mongchong. When we wanted something light for dessert, she offered us fresh Waimea strawberries that were not on the menu. All is all, an outstanding evening."

  • "Spectacular food served in a warm inviting atmosphere. Service was great. We had the Beet Salad & Quesadilla to start both were exceptional. Entrees we had Meatloaf Sandwich, Grass Fed Burger, Short Ribs, Pork Saifun & Grilled Fish. The dishes were executed well and flavors were spot on!"

  • "Merriman's is consistently awesome. My husband had the filet and it was cooked to perfection. I had the 3-course "What's Fresh" and it lived up to its name. I wish I could remember all the ingredients, but we got into lively discussions about the World Cup with our server, a darling young woman from Brazil. Made the event fun."

  • "Yet another absolutely wonderful dinner. The food is outstanding. I had the special Uku & Kauai prawns with a house made pappardelle miso infused pasta with a tomato ragout. Amazing! My first course Hirabara Lettuce Salad with Goat Cheese was perfect. Dressed perfectly. My bf had the lamb rib special appetizer and the pork entree. He loved it! The pineapple bread pudding with coconut ice cream is fabulous. A fantastic way to end a meal. Service was good. Attentive and quick. Wine flights are always incredible. Zach Sato is certainly an amazing Chef."

  • "Best meal we have had for a long time. Great sourced ingrediants, cooked well and very interseting combonations...will be back."
    Dined on 6/19/2014
  • "The food and service is fantastic so you do not mind the high prices as much. Our waitress was from Brazil and was so friendly. We eat here every time we are on the Big Island."

  • "Perfectly prepared all locally sourced food(I had the local farm raised lobster) in a very inviting and warm environment. Ask for Dylan(sp), our server was one of a kind-quirky, very knowledgeable, appears to love what he does which makes the experience all the more exciting. A must try and worth the drive from anywhere on the island."

  • "Exquisite cuisine. Every morsel incredible. Excellent service, waiter knew we were there to celebrate our 40th anniversary and lavished us with attention. The best dining experience ever."

  • "Well, we were hoping for a delicious meal but unfortunately everything on our plates (pork benedicts) was overcooked/tough except for the poached eggs."
    Dined on 6/15/2014
  • "We have eaten here many times and Merriman's continues it's tradition of offering fine food, locally produced. Plates are beautifully prepared with wonderful combinations of tastes and textures. The wine list is excellent also. Do reserve a dinner there on your next trip to the Big Island!"

  • "We spent New Years Eve 2014 here. We were lucky to secure a last minute reservation as it was highly recommended by our hotel concierge. Service was outstanding, food was even better! The atmosphere was very upscale, cool without a trace of pretension. Just a pure, excellent dining experience!"

  • "Always something new and exciting every visit to Merrimans. Three course tasting choice, split entrees half and half, all local food, healthy natural choices. Service was excellent-just another wonderful night."

  • "This is one of my all time favorite restaurants - it's pricy, but the food is so wonderful and high quality that we make it a point to visit every time we are on the Big Island."

  • "Always eat at Merrimans when we visit the Big Island and it never disappoints. Great local food and preparations."

  • "This restaurant is set up to take large groups, such as when a couple of tour buses arrive. We were seated at 12:30 for lunch and the large room was full and very noisy. There was a Hawaiian musician in one cornet and the music was bare audible over the noise. The food is very good. Our server was pretty new, so it was a bit sketchy."
    Dined on 6/6/2014
  • "Service was great. Our waiter was very attentive and explained everything to us. Food was very good although we do both agree that the Kapalua, Maui location is better. The Merriman's in Kapalua is amazing!"

  • "Service was great and food was spectacular. The roasted mushrooms were amazingly delicious; perfectly prepared -- as was everything ordered. All four of us ordered different foods and all were delicious and each was tweaked to be extraordinary or unexpected in some way by using fresh local ingredients. "

  • "We made a special trip up to Waimea to have some local beef and were mightily surprised to find the filets we ordered on the chewy side and difficult to cut. The restaurant provided a friendly, comfortable atmosphere and the service was good. We may come again for dinner but we won't order local beef."

  • "Dinner was superb. We enjoyed it so much we went back the next night. It would be a regular dining choice if we lived there. Jen our waitress was outstanding as well as all the other wait staff. Bravo to all!"

  • "We make this a must dining experience when visiting Hawaii. Our dinner was equal to some of the fine dining places in Sonoma/Napa. My husband's fresh fish chef special was fabulous. I had the lamb and it was excellent. Our server attended the Culinary Academy near St. Helena and was very knowledgable of the food and wine. It was the best food we ate in Hawaii by leaps and bounds. Plan your special evening here!"

  • "Visit Big a Island at least 3 times a year and always dine at Merriman's Waimea. Food is always excellent, service seems to have become more variable. Hostess could use some Aloha re-training. At least a smile, and why seat someone in side annex when dining room is open?"

  • "The food was good but we were a little disappointed because we have always felt the food was excellent in prior years. They may have a new chef and the menu has changed. On balance, although it was good we didn't believe it was comparable to the other restaurant we dined in during our Hawaii vacation. Based on our prior visits we will dine at Merriman's again next year."

  • "Had a fabulous dinner with the family at Merriman's, great server and delicious food. Love that we could split the entrée, the grass fed filet mignon and Kona lobster are a killer combination. Also loved the delicious lamb, and the sweet Kauai prawns, which are hard to get. All wonderful and looking forward to the bar renovation this fall."

  • "Merriman's offered my family and me an excellent dinning venue from our trip over by way of Hilo to the fog on the mountain road. The service was excellent, they offer a very good menu and the food that my party selected was very good. A bit on the high side but worth it."

  • "Our evening at Merriman's was wonderful. The food was delicious in every way. The wait staff was excellent. We are unlikely to go there again only because it was crazy overpriced. I love good food and Merriman's didn't miss a beat on that score, but $17 for a pasta appetizer that I could fit into a soup spoon is more than I'm willing to stretch routinely. Definitely worth going there once, though!"

  • "One of the things that I liked about Merriman's is their vegetables and grass fed meat. Everything is grown in the garden. It is tasty and sweet. The lobster special was excellent, and the chocolate purse was to die for. It was a wonderful to celebrate two anniversaries with two close friends. We do recommend that chef makes and keeps fresh horseradish at all time, in case some of us would like to have it with our meat."

  • "Merrimans is our favorite restaurant in Hawaii and California."

  • "It's best on the Island but not great in my international standard so I gave it a 4 stars. Enjoyed dinner , my fish was overlooked when I was told "our fish is cooked medium" but they fix it by getting me another piece quickly; our waitress was very nice , knowledgeable and professional, "A's" type personally didn't think she would be a born and raised local. "

  • "Tried Meeriman's for lunch for the first time after having been there twice for special occasion dinners. Very relaxed vibe with the same great quality food and attentive service. Will definitely return for lunch when in Waimea!"

  • "I have always loved Merriman's Waimea. it is our special dinner any time we are on the Big Island. I was almost dreading this last trip we took because I recently became vegan. I was not going to be enjoying the Trio, nor the desserts, nor the tuna tartare. When I eat at nice restaurants and tell them I am vegan, they usually prepare me pasta with whatever veggies they have lying around. It's usually delicious, but the chef at Merriman's took it a notch higher. He prepared hearts of palm into a consistency of spaghetti with a rainbow of delicious vegetables and it was one of the most delectable dishes of my life. Also, the wine flight of the evening which included 4 fabulous selections!"

  • "This was our second visit to Merriman's in Waimea. On the first visit we brought our kids (aged 13 and 20); unfortunately, they are not adventurous eaters, preferring steak to seafood, so that drew attention away from the innovative menu. Not to make that mistake again, this time my wife and I celebrated our wedding anniversary sans kid and had an exceptional experience. Beginning with Chili Pepper Kauai Prawns “A La Plancha," four prawns properly seasoned on a bed of greens was a great start. My wife had the 1/2 lobster special accompanied by a side of Hand Made Ricotta Cheese Cavatelli Pasta, which was served piping hot. Specific to the lobster, ask for drawn butter (no garlic). My course, Day Boat Special Catch, was excellent. "

  • "One of the best places on the island to go for fresh innovative food. We have been here several times and the quality of food, and also the service has been wonderful. Do not miss this restaurant in your Hawaiian travels"
